Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

"One NBA scout courtside insisted that, "Vinny ran three [different] plays the whole half and barely made any [play] calls. We don’t even know what to write down. They had a lot more variety last year, a lot more ball movement. It was almost like Vinny said, ‘Screw it, you guys figure it out.’ "

Good read - what an indictment of both coaches and franchises

Maybe Vinny is just deliberately trying to confuse opposing scouts

Unfortunately, he also seems to have confused his own team as well.

lol, wasn't that from the Vinny Del Negro playbook?

whatever happened to that thread?

This is so hilarious.

“we don’t even know what to write down.”

VDN is befuddling scouts!

I love how he mentioned schemes

like they’re a bunch of hocus pocus. " You can have all the schemes and all that, but it’s about the players." Like having a real idea of what to do out there is unnecessary.

Metal sharpens metal.

And this guy right here understands and knows what leadership is all about: The coach, the hall of famer......... Dick Butka! George Ryan

The Bulls shrink like a dick in cold water.

I guess none of the good teams bother with schemes

Oh yeah, the Lakers just go out there and play streetball.

by Big D on Dec 23, 2009 12:07 PM CST up reply actions

As if 'scheme' and 'confidence' in it have nothing to do with each other.

Can someone please get this guy out of here. I promise to pay his cab fare to the airport. In fact, no need to pack, I’ll pay to ship his stuff wherever he’s going.

ugh

article makes another great point. If you’re Wade, who are you trusting your future to: Pat Riley or Gar Forman. blah.

by The90sBullsRevival on Dec 23, 2009 1:57 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Yeah

The article is interesting but incoherent.

Perhaps the same thing- not wanting to trust Reinsdorf with your future- played a role in D’Antoni not coming here. Subsequent events have certainly given him no cause for regret.

I also like how the Bulls are simultaneously shopping Tyrus and trying to give VDN a fair shake by waiting until he comes back.

by Sports2 on Dec 23, 2009 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

pat riley isnt guaranteed to return.

although i bet that totally depends on what wade decides

Wade's numbers are a tad down

And I read that Riley is leaning on Wade a bit, putting some pressure on him. If Riley wears too much on Wade, perhaps sour grapes between them and Wade will be itching to leave?

Too much egg nog to me. Who am I kidding, why leave south Florida for GarPaxDork and less money, especially after Bosh or someone joins him.

All your base are belong to Vinny.

If Wade walks

Riles still has a Carnival Cruise Line sized amount of cap space.

12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

by NBA Observer on Dec 23, 2009 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

With Wade, they'd only have $24million committed in salary for next year

In other words, they have a lot more cap space than us, and they already have Wade on the roster.

What is scarier?

No head bands and corn rows or Riles’ body fat percentage litmus test for minutes?

Forget about getting Wade

Speaking from someone who lives in Miami, he’s leaning on mgt to get enough pieces to be able to compete for a title. He does like coach Spoelstra and Miami will be well positioned financially to potentially make a run at two FAs. There’s no advantage to coming to Chicago over Miami. Chicago might be the 3rd largest market, but there’s no state tax in Florida, the weather is a hell of lot better in Miami, and the nighlife is just as attractive (if not more so).

Who knows what the coaching situation will be (even if you assume VDN is otta here) by the time the FA signing period begins.

People need to get DWade out of their heads. If he doesn’t resign with Miami, it will be b/c Miami couldn’t sign any big name FAs. In other words, we’d have to have a marquee player on the roster for him to think his addition would push the team to the edge. DRose will either have to elevate his game to top tier status by the time the season is over or we’re screwed b/c we won’t have money for two FAs unless Deng is somehow traded for expiring contracts.

Own in Florida

Rent in Chicago.

Not that I know how the player salaries work in the NBA, but they work in lots of places. Do they all pay income taxes in their “home states”?

12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

by NBA Observer on Dec 23, 2009 6:05 PM CST up reply actions

The income tax thing is way overblown...

one of the ESPN writers did a great piece on it that was posted on here earlier in the year. most people who mention it have no idea what they’re even talking about. but you pay income tax where your income comes from.

as for owning and renting… he owns in Chicago already. A house in the burbs and a townhouse downtown. So…

by smash! on Dec 23, 2009 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

They pay income taxes in multiple states...

And countries…however, with the bulk of any players income being earned in Florida (with no income tax), that certainly must an incentive…

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and LLE will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

by Dionysus2.0 on Dec 24, 2009 12:08 AM CST up reply actions

maybe it was just the same play 3 different times.

It was a little ambiguous with the “different” being added in by the writer.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

not that i'm a VDN fan but..

Nobody runs plays in the NBA, its about pick and roll and isolations and i’d rather have rose/hinrich calling the plays anyways.

by oakdale on Dec 24, 2009 4:32 PM CST reply actions

No. Most teams use the same plays, mainly pick n roll but most successful teams have some sort of offensive scheme.

by C Smoove on Dec 25, 2009 1:42 PM CST up reply actions

schemes are not plays.
