Well

I never suspected the Bulls to have a chance @ beating Atlanta so I guess if we blow a 30-point lead to the Kings everything evens out…

He asked more on the players – and I say absolutely. Vinny doesn’t make them miss shots or commit stupid TOs. No matter what idiotic situation Vinny puts them in, I expect them to execute better.

And they lost the lead largely to the Kings’ bench players!

Just waiting on some offense....

the point isn't that the players didn't play bad

of course they did. But VDN has to have something up his sleeve to pull them out of that tailspin. He did what he always does – ran the same play over and over and over

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 21, 2009 9:43 PM CST up reply actions

I guess I expect more out of the players than most of you.

Vinny is responsible for many things, and I’m far from absolving him from any responsibility in the debacle. But I still say it’s roughly 1/3 on him and 2/3 on the players. I don’t care what idiotic play he gives them to run, or how much more likely to succeed they’d be with a better coach. That matters in closer games.

No coach is such an idiot that a team of NBA players – and actual rotation players – give up a 35 point lead in less than a half of basketball if they are executing at all. Even if Vinny calls a freaking iso for Lu or John on every single play, I expect them to be good enough to make some of those, and smart enough to pass out if it’s clear that the iso isn’t there.

Just waiting on some offense....

by wjb1492 on Dec 21, 2009 9:53 PM CST up reply actions

if you look at who was on the floor for the Kings during the comeback

Evans, Udrih, Udoka, Brockman and Greene, you will notice that of that group, only Evans played more than 30 minutes.

In contrast, Salmons-Rose and Deng all played over 41 minutes, Noah played 36 minutes and Kirk played 32. Deng was matched for a large portion of the 4th with Brockman, who kept getting offensive rebounds and Udoka who kept getting open 3s, Rose was matched with Udrih, who was blowing by him. And Salmons was matched with Green – again jacking open 3s.

The Bulls lost their legs. In a game where you literally run out to 67 points in the 1st half and a 35 pt lead in third, you have to find time to play your bench. You have to. I don’t think any other coach or team loses this game with that lead against this opponent. You can assign any portion of the blame you want, VDN can be fired, the players can’t be.

I never said not to fire Vinny

If that’s how people took it. There are a billion reasons to fire Vinny. This game just continued with the same mistakes he always makes – including not developing the bench. My thinking the players are more at fault isn’t intended as an absolution of Vinny.

But I still think the players deserve more fault for this specific loss. They didn’t even have to play well to hold that lead, just not play like total idiots.

From a RealGM poster

Deng rested for 5:30 minutes tonight. Rose rested seven minutes. Salmons rested eight minutes. Noah 10 minutes. Many coaches will say you don’t coach tomorrow night today, so I won’t use the excuse that he should be resting guys for tomorrow. But I will say that in that game, there was NO REASON for so many guys to play so many minutes. Basically, the Bulls were more tired than Sacramento and it led to them getting open threes and getting to the line (Bulls not moving their feet). It was amazing. The Bulls had a 18+ point lead (sometimes high as 35) for a CONSECUTIVE 22 minutes.

The Bulls were up by 18 or more for 22 consecutive minutes yet VDN didn’t feel comfortable enough to sit Rose, Deng, Salmons or Noah for any time so they could rest. HE CAN"T HANDLE THE ROTATIONS. HE IS A FUCKING IDIOT. He has been screwing up rotations for 2 full seasons and he LUCKED OUT last year when Pax made that trade and the Bulls had only 7-8 healthy players. And even than HE KEPT BENCHING TYRUS. Fire this dipshit now.

if the bench comes in at the 35 point lead

and they play poorly and allow the Kings to come back then at least the starters are rested. They’re also not demoralized and come back in with the intent of closing it out. Instead, the Bulls starters lose the lead, lost the momentum, were demoralized, and tired at the end of the game. It’s terrible game management.

by patagonia on Dec 21, 2009 9:57 PM CST up reply actions

you know when the Bulls are running those 20 isos in a row for Deng

they can put Pargo in the corner instead of Rose.

And when Rose is hot from the field, you can play JJ and sit Deng.

the other guys on the floor with Evans

the guys hitting the 3s and grabbing the rebounds – none of them played over 25 minutes. Fatigue isn’t all that happened out there, but it played a part. The bigger thing is VDN has to call plays better and has to rest guys when the Bulls are up 30 points. Of course someone who builds a 30 pt lead is going to get complacent, that is why you put in the bench guys who are trying to make an impression

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 21, 2009 10:06 PM CST up reply actions

It works both ways

If you give the players all the credit for generating the 35 point lead then they also have to take some of the stick for throwing it away.

Having said that, no coach worth his salt should lose a lead like that – if it’s a case of the players losing confidence in their shots then as coach VDN also has to take some responsibility for that.

Combination of bad coaching and bad execution, but personally I put most of the blame on whoever it was that said they only started watching the game at halftime…

Rose had to stop this run

The critiques of Vinny are accurate and always welcome and fatigue certainly could have been a factor, but this one lies at the feet of Derrick Rose in large measure. Sure, he sat too long to start the 4th (should have sat more earlier), but he still came in with a 13 point lead. He controlled the game by diving and darting to the basket in the first half, but was then content to pass the ball to the wing or high post and circle around, only to never see it again. If you don’t get it back, you can’t give it up when the other team is busting your ass. Demand a clearout and try to stop the bleeding. He never did.
Meanwhile, Tyreke Evans made it clear down the stretch that the win or loss would be on him. Rose didn’t.

by Gene Banks on Dec 21, 2009 10:23 PM CST reply actions

those are the plays the Bulls are calling. Rose isn't calling for Deng to get the ball

that is VDN. and Evans isn’t calling his own number, that is Westphal. They went to Evans out of timeouts, the Bulls went to Deng until about the 3 minute mark in the 4th.

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 21, 2009 10:26 PM CST up reply actions

If that's the play called, you break it off

There’s some cliche talking about the definition of crazy is doing the same thing over and over and expecting the same result. It’s like Vinny calling 20 s timeouts at the end of every quarter. Guess what – the players have played in a lot of games and likely understand who’s hot and who’s not. If Rose is the star and the focal point, he needs to be defiant. Ignore the play and make a play.

by Gene Banks on Dec 21, 2009 10:31 PM CST up reply actions

agreed. at some point Rose has to say fuck it, i'm getting to the lane

But i just think its bogus nobody else on this team ever gets blamed for not making plays when things are going wrong

Humiliating

Rose helped build a fucking 35 point lead. He shouldn’t even have to come back into this game if our team had any depth whatsoever.

I still dont get why everyone

assume that Rose is the guy to take the last shot. That wasn’t him last year when everyone would get pissed because BG would take it and it’s not him now. Those guys are born, not made and maybe that isn’t him

is expected to take those shots because he is by far the best player on this team. He’s also the franchise.

Where was Ron Turner when you needed him to guide the Bulls in the red zone?

Or at least Jim Boy%#n, a coach with much, much stronger credentials than Vinny.

QUIZ TIME?

In the NBA, whats the biggest lead any team has had at home and then blown it to lose the game?
What team was it?

ANSWER
The team to have the biggest lead at home only to loose it where the 2009-10 Chicago Bulls. On December 21st 2009 the Chicago Bulls where up by 35 points only to blow it and loose 102-98 to the Sacramento fucking Kings. Well Done Bulls!

Don't forget Bulls loss to the 1-19 NJ Nets also!

Plus, the Bulls have been blown more than half of the 16 losses to date…

Fire Paxson, Gar, Vinny and the rest of the coaches, announcers, trainers,do nothing scouts and everyone else working in Paxson’s organization. Let Benny the Bull stay.

Your second half thread is almost a mirror image of the Sactown Royalty 1st half thread, ecept for the VDN stuff

at about the 8:00 minute mark we started going “They are trying to give us this game” and they did. Bad loss, not rubbing it in Sac has had way too many games like this.

Luol should have said this game was decided based on simple Math!

It’s a stretch for the Bulls to score over 100 pts regardless how big a lead or if him and rose together were shooting 65% first half. In the end the averages get adjusted and the Kings did what they usually do in scoring averages. 102 – 98.

I really dislike this team .. moreso than any in the history of the Bulls

coach vs. players

we can go back and forth, the obvious fact is that this team has no leadership. Not VDN, not Rose, not the captains, not Noah – no leadership on the court or in the locker room.

At the end of the day, the coach is hired to be a leader. And it is especially important for the coach to be a leader when you have a young team. VDN is not a leader. he is not a teacher. He must be fired, and the Bulls need to bring in a veteran coach and a veteran star. A veteran coach who will gain respect for his knowledge and accomplishments, not his title. And not a vet rotation player or a vet to sit on the bench, but a veteran star to lead and to expect more from his teammates, the coaching staff and the players.

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 21, 2009 10:44 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

I think bad coaching is the proximate cause of the loss

Obviously, the players are directly culpable — they were on the floor and played awfully. But the fact that the Bulls run no real offense came home to roost in the second half. The Bulls never look like they have a plan on offense, and it lends itself to long stretches of awful jump shots. The only high percentage shots they get with any regularity are Rose’s drives, and VDN’s offense chooses to take the ball out of Rose’s hands after he brings it upcourt with alarming regularity.

Also, if the Bulls had any direction on defense, it wasn’t apparent. VDN chose not to double Evas just like he chose not trap Devin Harris last season. He let’s the responsibility fall on an obviously over-matched defender rather than make a coaching decision.

So, both players and coach are responsible. But some of the players I think can be part of a good team (maybe even next season).

I totally agree BBall Smurf but don't hold your breath.

Following your advice would mean less money in JR’s wallet.

He supposedly loves the Sox but is tightfisted with them too.
Bulls fans have to take the same approach and stop filling his bloated coffers.

A loss to the Knicks and VDN's gone, right?

This can only go on for so long. The question then becomes who the new coach is. Bernie?

by Stay Chisel on Dec 21, 2009 10:55 PM CST reply actions

he's not getting fired this season bro.

The team took a vacation. It’s on everyone tonight. The Kings found a lineup that worked while the Bulls started napping and they got hot. The Bulls stopped competing period. They aren’t that good to do that. They see these teams and wanna be just like them. Relaxing on the bench during a blowout. OH MY NIGHT IS DONE. Their not good enough to do that.

by SoulEater7 on Dec 21, 2009 11:04 PM CST up reply actions

I think that's true. The Bulls punted on the season long ago. They don't care about the coach

They don’t want to pay VDN to not coach this year. He’ll finish out the season unless they become wretchedly 0-18 stretch bad and they feel they need to pull the plug for PR reasons. But I think a loss at NY isn’t going to mean anything.

Honestly, I think VDN is probably gone at the end of the season. But if the 3rd year is guaranteed, I wouldn’t count on it. And should he be fired, I’m sure the Bulls will hire some micro-managing pace-killing dude like Avery Johnson and I’ll finally be forced find alternative basketball to watch.

by hitlesswonder on Dec 21, 2009 11:11 PM CST up reply actions

i'm sure you're right

but any team that cared about winning (or the fans) would have to can him. honestly, my time as a season ticket holder is probably winding down. this team is really an insult to me, and i’m not just talking about tonight. the organization has no plan and if the FA bonanza in 2010 doesn’t work out, it will be more of the same. even if they do get a top FA, i don’t trust the team enough to get a decent coach. there is no direction or strategy. if they don’t care enough to try to put a winning product on the floor, i don’t care to pay many thousands of dollars for season tickets. winning is incidental to what the bulls do (i.e., sell tickets to people who clearly dont care if the team wins or loses). sadly, there’s nothing i can do now as the tickets were purchased months ago. i am really disgusted with this team right now.

by Stay Chisel on Dec 21, 2009 11:46 PM CST up reply actions

Seriously this team just did what it's been doing all season and thats quitting.

How many times have teams made a big run on the Bulls and they just lay down. Thats been their trait all season. They weren’t this mentally weak against Boston so what happened? In blowouts they quit. With big leads they quit. Is that VDN I’m not so sure. I think some of the players are quitters. Last time I watched a team quit like this was 2007. Ask yourself who was on that team?

I have a scary thought.

Maybe the players are giving maximum effort and simply suck under zero leadership due to a lack of coherent strategy and chaos fromhe bench.

Thats right

The bulls think that other teams will just give up like they do when they are down by a big margin. But in reality teams want to come back just to make the score more respectable.

I'm telling you I could pick up something on Evans from my TV that the Bulls didn't

before he makes his move to the basket he takes two long strides at that time the Bulls should send the double at him and he’ll turn the ball over or travel. He was doing that in the first half. He is totally predictable. Tyrus would have been swatting his shot all night. For them not to key on that just tells you how dumb this team is.
