Open Game Thread #25: Bulls vs. Atlanta Hawks

Atlanta Hawks at Chicago Bulls, Dec 19, 2009 7:00 PM CST

Hopefully this one works, as I'll be attendance and powerless to post another one. And powerless to escape the bad basketball.

But Vinny has talked about Ty needing to get back in basketball shape and learn a couple things they’ve put in since he went out, so I don’t know that cleared for contact means he’ll be available Monday – just it would be nice if Vinny started getting him in right away as long as his arm is feeling comfortable and all.

Derrick Rose is HORRIBLE AT DEFENSE.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

by tyger1147 on Dec 19, 2009 9:14 PM CST reply actions

I don't think it's fair to classify Bibby as "speedy" anymore.

Rose is also unaware of how to fight through screens, since none of his teammates are capable of setting them.

…for about 7 or 8 seconds, and dribbling slowly into Rose, and then just taking off easily around him.

Not when you know that's the only play that's going to happen and you have 10 secs...

My point was look at the overall PG matchup

Rose clearly dominated Bibby both offensively and defensively.

Not to mention Johnson makes a lot of defenders look back on occasion.

I'll agree with the last point.

And I’d agree that Rose made Bibby look bad. I wouldn’t agree that that is evidence that Rose is a good defender. He’s not good. If one wants to argue that’s he’s close to average and has moments of being really good, fine. But overall, every play, night-in, night-out, he’s not good at defense.

I'd say he's about average.

Rarely do you see apposing PGs dominate him offensively.

Perhaps he’s a bit spoiled because physically he can get away with not being as aggressive since he usually has a size advantage.

Remember, this argument originated from when you called his defense “horrible”.

Rose needs to foul more, too.

He fouls less than anyone on the team. And it’s not because he’s a great defender.

I think its come to the point where he was doing so badly at times last year his criticism this year are a bit harsh. Hes been improving his D is average.

by Camry on Dec 20, 2009 7:15 AM CST up reply actions

It's about being aggressive.

This is going to sound so cliche, but most defenders who are really good get a couple of a fouls per game. James is the last one I remember who didn’t—as Sam Smith pointed out last year. It’s almost impossible to be a good defender without being aggressive and physical. If you’re both of those, you’re bound to pick up a couple of fouls, whether you’re a perimeter defender or post defender.

Rose is aggressive, but it’s becoming obvious to me that he abhors contact. I’m not saying he’s a pussy (because that’s not what I do), but I am saying that to him, it seems as if being physical is not how basketball should be played. He doesn’t draw fouls and he doesn’t foul even a little bit (which is a byproduct of playing good defense).

So he shouldn't have to play defense?

If you’re guarding Raja Bell, he shouldn’t score any points. That’s how Kobe or MJ would look at it.

in today's NBA

your best scorer doesn’t generally guard the other’s team’s best, unless that’s the natural matchup (or at end of game situations).

Case in point, if the Lakers and Cavs play, Kobe and LeBron aren’t guarding one another for most of the game.

He should definitely play defense, but since he’s no longer JUST a defensive specialist, he doens’t have to play his ‘best’. You don’t expect a normal human (read: not Joakim) to give everything he has on every second of every possesion of every game.

I kinda always get kik out of hinrich getting techd up

Cuz he takes it so personal and he always wants to do something to get back at the whole situation, after he got the tech, he took the ball and went straight at the defense, penetrated and got to the line, and my brother was like “he should get mad like that more often” i think he stayed kind of mad, but focused the rest of the game, and it helped him remain aggressive and confident shooting….he does that often when he gets a technical, he always wants to respond back through his play, its like the best way to focus him…I bet skiles used to chew him out during halftime, which is why he played so much better back then…

2) This win most likely means a turnaround (hopefully) but also means VDN stays

4) Mayweather vs Pacquiao finally has a venue and it’s at the MGM. At least I can always count on Floyd to make me happy, even when the Bulls can’t

It's so true unfortunately

EVERY TIME he gets hit it looks like a career ender. I hate to rip on someones pain threshold (unless it’s Luol Deng which I’ve done countless times), but you really have to start to wonder if he has the toughness to get it done. I also consider his unwillingness to mix it up for loose balls and rebounds an indicator of this. Also have we ever seen him come even remotely close to a scrap with another player?

That’s a physical thing with Oden. He’s not soft, his body is. It’s not his fault his body can’t handle the banging. At least when he’s in he goes and gets in the mix, Derrick never gets his hands dirty.

I didn’t even see the game,I saw some replays… the dribble, spin and turnaround fade a way was some of the greatest shiit I ever seen. And not to mention the driving layup were he blew past Joe Johnson and put his left arm up to knock Josh Smith off balance which gave him no chance to block the shot, this was to tie the game up with 35 seconds left.(he absorbed the contact there). These two plays were in ending of the fourth. Overall clutch performance.Kobe told him just do it!..Wade,Lebron,Chris Paul, mostly all nba coaches give Rose high praise.I knew it was only a matter of time where he would start to take over. by Bullsfanla on Dec 20, 2009 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

What my "concern" with Rose is...

…is that his biggest weak points seem to be about being aggressive and relentless. That’s a mindset, some have it, some don’t. Let’s not forget that the best game of Rose’s life, it was still Tyrus Thomas who hit the clutch shots in overtime.

Rose could be drawing 5-7 FTA per game right now if he wanted. He could be a much bigger pest on the defensive end right now if he had that mindset. Maybe he will get it. It’s not a physical limitation in either athletic ability or technique that is holding him back right now; it’s mental limitation. It can still be learned, which is why I still think Rose can be a superstar (although defense is more than just “trying hard”). I just hope he recognizes that part of it.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

by tyger1147 on Dec 20, 2009 4:39 PM CST up reply actions

I know everyone thinks the refs hate their favorite player, etc.

But in recent games Rose has gone hard to the hoop a lot, gotten enough contact to draw a call and simply not gotten a call. I agree his game has a lot of short-comings but I honestly think that his not getting to the line is not entirely his fault at this point. He’s been pretty aggressive.

by hitlesswonder on Dec 20, 2009 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

Why would they single him out, though?

Tyreke Evans and Rusell Westbrook have gotten plenty of calls in their early careers.

I’m sure there are more than a few calls Rose “should have” gotten, but you’d have to think there is an actual conspiracy against Rose getting calls. We know rookie PG’s can get calls, so I’m done with that excuse (not that you were making it, but plenty of others have).

Oh, and further evidence (to me) that Rose doesn’t like contact is that he doesn’t get rebounds or steals. Basically, except for scoring and passing, he doesn’t do the little things very well. At this stage in his career he’s like a perimeter version of Eddy Curry. At least he doesn’t turn the ball over, so that’s good.

Eddy scored for himself ridiculously well, Rose gets others to score well enough and for himself okay. Neither does anything else well.

Nice psychoananlysis

On the list of possible reasons that Rose hasn’t gone inside as much this year, I find “He’s a pussy” to be really damn obnoxious. I’m no Rose fanboy, but this is ridiculous. He had the ankle injury and has no Gordon. Those are at least as legit as your assessment of Rose’s psyche. Plus, as Jaina points out, he seems much more aggressive lately.

…Eddy Curry was about ten times the efficient scorer than Rose is. Rose dishes a lot so he creates for his teammates about ten times better than Curry did, but Curry created for himself. Neither does much of anything else.

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 21, 2009 12:38 PM CST up reply actions

I may have said he wasn't "tough", and if I did....

…I’d appreciate the link or quote, but I’ve mostly said he’s not aggressive and that he avoids contact.

There’s nothing that makes you a “pussy” when you avoid contact. It could be trying to get your shot, trying not to foul, trying to use your explosiveness and speed instead of your strength. I wouldn’t call a receiver that doesn’t like to go over the middle a “pussy”; I try to avoid macho declarations of ball-size (or lack thereof) like that. I’d call that person smart for not wanting to be knocked unconscious or suffer a life-ending spinal injury.

I think you guys are conflating your own egos with Rose too much and instituting your own words.

Unless I did call him a pussy.

Oh, and two less free throws, two less rebounds, two less 3 pointers made, 1 less steal every other game… sure mock those, but if you don’t see how doing ALL of the “little things” at a lesser rate doesn’t add up, then, well, whatever. I mean, what’s Rose do better than Kirk Hinrich at this point in their careers?

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

Gee, what a loser, indicating spots where he was hit are indeed hurting.

And if he’s grimacing in pain, he’s obviously getting contact.

He's not getting calls

because he’s not seeking contact, esp. when he is dribbling.

Has he ever pump-faked and drawn the foul? ZERO, not once that I recall.

Plus the poster that said he’s not scrumming for rebounds, loose balls at the free throw line, or steals is right on.

When he gets trapped by a big, does he hit into him? Or does he stop and pass it to Brad?

Was it just me

or did anyone else think Joe Johnson was auditioning tonight? He appeared far more aggressive in getting off his own shot that the game a few weeks ago in Atlanta. In Atlanta he struggled with his shot but still managed 4 assists in 30 minutes of action. Last night he had 5 assists in 48 minutes, but put up 32 shots.

It looked like he just wanted to get his until late in the game the Bulls were competing so he started to try to take over.

Isn't that his usual M.O?

Isn’t he known as a bit of a selfish player. At least that’s what I’ve heard. He took a ton of shots last night, but hell, he was hitting them, especially from three, so why not?

Maybe he was taking them as Marvin Williams and Josh Smith were bricking them

Those two were just awful last night, but did you notice JJ creating anything for either of them? I can’t say I watched Joe get either of them involved in the offense.

by NBA Observer on Dec 20, 2009 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

You're right.

He was pretty selfish last night. I don’t watch much Hawks ball, so I don’t know much about the offense they run. Do they move the ball well or are they big on isolations? I would think they would lean towards the latter as their athleticism creates matchup nightmares.

of their mega-point cycles against the Bulls.

nice game

glad i recorded it off wgn america.

good to see the offensive change happen (adjustment?). after they looked stagnant in the 1st quarter, i saw a lot of double high post (usually noah and miller at the elbows) that coincided with a lot of cutting. and there was generally much more movement in the standard sets(?), pick and rolls used to get the mismatch and drive/kicks from isos. in both those cases, they were usually quicker and more aggressive. (what’s the point in a mismatch if it’s not taken advantage of in the paint? even if it produced a jumper, it meant guys were more open.)

i disagree that salmons was “creating room” for derrick this game with his shot. he made some nice passes though. and why vinny insists on matching up miller with either smith or horford….ugh! luckily, it didn’t really hurt this time. but it did effect the 1st quarter, when they looked pretty bad.

the name of the team is The DIAMONDBACKS

The Bulls are screwed no matter who starts at PF

Brad Miller is Vinny’s favorite toy on offense. I’ve never seen a team actually try to run their offense through a 6’11 perimeter PF that wasn’t Dirk Nowitzki, but the Bulls seem hell-bent on giving possessions away by sticking Miller with the ball and letting him make stupid decisions.

Hopefully Tyrus comes back next week, because Miller and Gibson can provide value to this club, just not in the roles they have right now.

by Ozzie Montana on Dec 20, 2009 1:21 PM CST up reply actions

He usually guards the opposing teams center

which has helped Noah, I believe. Paired against the likes of Bogut or Kaman, Miller can be useful. But when he is matched up with Hortford like last night, he is in a world of trouble.

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 20, 2009 7:20 PM CST up reply actions

I dunno about that

Miller’s got a pretty long history as a very effective high post passer you could run an offense through. Not saying we should do it all the time, but he was good at it with the Kings.

by Sports2 on Dec 20, 2009 5:03 PM CST up reply actions

That was 6 years ago, I'm confident Miller's quickness and timing has waned since then.

That was also on a team where he was paired with 2 other incredible post passers, and a coach who knows what the fuck he’s doing.

I’m not trying to bash him, but the Bulls set themselves up for failure pretty often trying to run plays through him.

A better response

The Bulls have so many ways to set themselves up for failure it’s a shame to limit them to this one.

i thought vinny had a good game also…

by good

you mean he didn’t hurt them right?

by diedaily23 on Dec 20, 2009 5:37 PM CST up reply actions

He helped them?

Basically I liked how VDN didnt just stick to having salmons and hinrich guard Joe Johnson, having deng guard him, what was even more great was that he put deng and salmons in the game, had deng guard Joe johnson, and salmons whoever the sf was supposed to be (this is in the second quarter) I also liked how the bulls were offensively making atlanta pay for doing that switchy defense (of course vdn should know all aobut that defense since thats what the bulls did last year) and they ran an offense that constantly allowed taj or deng to get defended by bibby or whoever the smallest guy was.

I liked how the last play in the 4th was designed for rose, and that when rose didnt get the ball that the thought was call a timeout and lets t ry to get rose teh ball this time…even though it ended up in dengs hand, he wasnt supposed to be the one who got the ball, which at least showed some direction.

Then there was teh fact that the lineups were really good, partially because of matchups, but he did get noah alot of rest and ran a smaller front court with deng and taj, or deng and miller, if things werent working he wasnt forcing them to work, and what was working (rose for example) he was milking it for all it was worth.

Basically what i would expect from decent-good coaching vdn provided, there was no pargo, there was only a little of james johnson (and he wasnt helping much) and part of why they won was because vdn was willing to make changes throughout the game that helped the team…I thought he did a good job…

I disagree with your assessment of the last play in the 4th

Vinny actually screwed up Rose’s chances of having the last shot by calling the timeout in the first place. Rose had the ball off Deng’s rebound and was pushing it across half court when Vinny called the time-out. Why? So he can tell everyone to clear out and let Rose iso like they always do? He took the ball out of Rose’s hands and gave Atlanta a chance to keep him from getting it, which they did. They had plenty of time to set up Rose’s iso without calling that time out, and the Hawks would have had a harder time setting up a defense to stop it.
Classic idiot Vinny move.

Interesting point

i really didnt think about it that way, but i agree with your assessment…still, for vinny yesterday was a pretty good coaching job, relative to what his coaching usually is like….

Taj is a decent role player

that is all….shame on the bulls for making him play as something he is not, and perhaps never will be….a starting pf…just teasing the guy…

Taj is a good player when he doesn't get destroyed by starting forwards.

Hopefully when Tyrus comes back healthy the front court can have a more normal distribution of minutes
