Game Preview #26 - Bulls vs. Sacramento Kings: (Rose vs. Evans)
[In lieu of a proper game preview, I'll promote this FanPost from a few days ago, debating Rose against the Kings' Tyreke Evans.
Even more appropriate of a conversation given their respective late-game heroics over the weekend. It was good to see Rose wake up near the end of Saturday's improbable victory over the Hawks. But whenever I see Rose go coast-to-coast and power his way towards a lay-in, I'm simultaneously impressed yet miffed that he doesn't do that more often. It doesn't help that other late-game possessions involve him waltzing up to the top and passing it to Luol Deng so he can 'isolate'.
Not that I can be that hard on the kid until he gets a real coach. But still, Evans already is the more efficient scorer, and seeks contact. Rose has other strengths, but has yet to do that, and this team (it can't be overstated how bad Hinrich and Salmons have been this season) needs it. -ed.]
Question from a Kings fan:
First, I just wanted to say that I think you did the right thing when you drafted Derrick Rose over Michael Beasley. That's why I'm sad that he's not performing well this season. What gives? Is it the coach, how the teams are playing him or is he just playing really bad?
Tyreke Evans has been compared to Derrick Rose. I know Rose is more athletic but do you see any similarities in their game? Is Rose is a legit PG?
For my last question, I know it's too early to ask this but given what you have seen from Rose and Evans, if you had a choice, would you build a franchise around Rose or Evans? Please explain why. Thanks.

In my opinion it comes down to
Evans has a little more size and strength while Rose has the speed (and probably better ballhandling skills, not sure, I haven’t seen enough of Evans). Evans has definitely shown a great ability yo get to the line so far.
There are probably people on here that could break things down far better than I could, but I think I’d still rather take Rose. If only cause I see him as more of a true point. Tyreke seems more like a hybrid, which is what many people have been saying about Rose as well, but I think I have even more positional questions about Evans.
I really don’t think you can go wrong either way though, Evans certainly appears to be a beast. I could just be a little too close to the situation to be objective, having watched Rose play almost every game since he got into the league and really pulling for him to take his game to that next level.
Vinny Del OH NO!
First of all
This core Rose-Noah-Deng-Tyrus(?) has never seen a legitimate coach to teach them besides the bulls assistant coaches.
No offensive identity whatsoever, ineffective dribble weave plays I guess?
The last time they had a good coach was when Skiles was here and when Rose wasn’t a Bull yet. And remember, that team swept the Heat(which was the NBA defending champion in that year, I don’t remember) in the first round of the playoffs and in that year made noise about becoming a power in the East.
Imagine Rose being in the mix back then. Or even more so imagine Rose being handled by Phil Jackson, Avery Johnson or Byron Scott or simply a coach that knows how to coach.
Have you seen the Bulls huddle lately every after timeouts? Players usually stick to the huddle 5 seconds more after the buzzer had sounded. I’ve seen many instances that most Bulls players just leave VDN in the huddle 5 seconds earlier before the buzzer sounds.
I don’t know what’s going on to the bulls but before making any judgement about this core, I think we have to wait for a coach that can really exploit the talent of this team until making further judgments about the individual players that this team has. But for now I will agree to everyone, this team is one of the worst teams I’ve seen in terms of using their player assets.
And to answer your question
I would still pick Rose because……..I have only seen 2 games of the Sacramento Kings this season.
I really like Tyreke Evans
Of all the guard to come in to the league the last 3 years, Evans is the one guy I would say is better than Rose. I like Rose’ potential though, so i’m happy with who we got. But Evans reminds me of a slower but longer Dwayne Wade.
I don’t think they play the same position. Evans is a shooting guard who can pass, Rose is a point guard. And I don’t think they play that much alike. Evans is much more an isolation player. It will be interesting to see how teams adjust to Evans. The one game where I really saw him play, Washington was failing to force him to take his jumper. If you can keep him out the lane, than you may have some success against him. But can you keep him out the lane?
I think he is the best rookie. If I had to start a franchise from scratch I would choose Rose, because I think Rose has more potential. If Rose learns to get to the line, I think he closes the gap on Evans. But you can’t go wrong either way

His 6.3 FTA is damn impressive
List of players 20 or younger all-time to average >6 per game here
Every one became an all-star, most are hall of fame worthy. Rose could get in that picture too, but Evans has been a beast so far.
...notice something about that list? (...height-position...)
I’m a fan of course of your work here, but apples and oranges shouldn’t be compared.
Imho, if there were a list including d will, kevin johnson, etc., the point woud be more apt.

You're right.
Tyreke Evans being the only guard shows in a group all to himself!!!
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

I would have to echo others in saying that
Rose is definitely more of a true point relative to Evans, but that isn’t necessarily a good thing, it all depends on your teams make-up. If we still had Gordon, I would probably rather have Evans because I think Evans plays off the ball a bit better or at least has better potential to play off the ball (I think I saw the Kings run some post-ups for him in pre-season?). For an up-tempo team, Rose is definitely a better fit ( I am not sure the Bulls are one, they play at a relatively fast pace, but they do it poorly). But I would say I definitely don’t agree with others that Evans is a two guard, he’s just more of a hybrid that Rose.

Rose is a true point guard, Evans is more of a combo guard
Skill wise they’re probably even, I don’t know how Evans is on defense, I do think the only edge Evans has is at scoring. Overall, if I had to pick one, I’d say….probably…..it’s tough……probably Evans because he’s probably a slightly better scorer.
I haven't seen Evans much, I'll take Rhythm's word on Evans.. but in regards to Rose
He is very talented, maybe not a 25ppg scorer but I envision him at 18ppg and double-double with assists once his shot selection improves and he gets to the line much more and improves on the creativity and the williness of his assists. Also he’s young he might eventually develop a consistent 3pt, then his scoring will go up.
Rose needs to get the hell out of Chicago, his game will never improve here. Chicago does not develop any players and doesn’t know how too. The coaching is bad and the management is worst.
Heck! Kirk Hinrich, talented, should be a much better player than he is now, only if he had was mentored and coached correctly to his strengths 4, 3 years ago.
Let not even speak of Tyrus Thomas also. Chicago is a grave yard for talented young players

You can already see the impact playing for the Bulls has had on his career — it’s not good.

You're kidding right?
What’s with the pessimism and why so cynical? What’s the point of being a fan if you think that our best player by far should leave the team you’re a fan of? I understand being upset at the teams we root for every now and then, but this is just weak and pathetic.

Yeah.
The Bulls will not have Vinny Del Negro forever and Rose is only 21. Gary Payton, Tony Parker, Mike Bibby, Jason Kidd among others have worked into the third season where a lot of points make the leap.
Rose is going to be awesome and he is going to be awesome as a Bull.

Then Golden Boy Kurt could have his starting spot back.
Besides, Rose is eventually going to want a higher salary than JR would like to pay.

Dorf
will pay him all he wants when the time comes. One bad year isn’t the end of the world guys…hell it may still turn out to be an ok year. Rose is here for a LONG time and it seems other stars would like to come here to play with him. It is business smart to get one of those players which is why I think dorf will do it. Having a recognizable winning team will bring him a lot of cash, even more than losing and shitting on the fans does.

I wouldn’t have said years ago he wouldn’t pay Ben Gordon, who seemed like an exemplary pro, though with more obvious shortcomings than Rose.
A lot of it is how the player defers to the Org. Rose seems quite good at that, so no worries :)

Anything could be a question, it doesn’t mean it’s a realistic one. Derrick Rose fills the seats. Reinsdorf would not voluntarily let him go unless that stopped being the case. That won’t be the case unless both he and the Bulls get significantly worse.

Evans is a more polished player,
and has more versatility. Derrick is raw – but a better athlete, and more or a true point guard.
I take Rose. Right now, the Bulls have done everything possible to hamper his development – they have no shooters, no interior scoring, nothing. Teams are packing the lane – he’s their entire focus, and its a great strategy.
Once Derrick learns to draw contact, he’ll be a great player. Once he starts shooting 3s – if he starts shooting 3s – he’ll be ridiculous.
But I love that Evans. I just think he’s in a more ideal situation right now, and the league hasn’t adjusted to him. It will.
The poster formerly known as Freethefro.
Evans is a beast. 20/5/5 are monster numbers. He isn’t a PG, he’s a SG with good passing skills and handles. And he gets the line like a MF.
Evans is benefiting from having a decent coach. Rose has had one of the league’s worst.
I take Rose
Based on potential and physical superiority at his position. Rose is the most athletic point in the league while Evans is a pretty good athlete for a two. I want potentially the best at a given position. Evans won’t be, Rose very well could be some day. When Rose figures out how to get to the line, he’ll be Wade like. I DO really like Evans though…he’d fit nicely next to Rose.
by wfrv5 on Dec 19, 2009 12:15 PM CST via mobile reply actions
My only thing is that I don’t think Rose will ever be the best PG. I doubt he will end up better than D Will and CP3, he’s neck and neck with Jennings.
Evans isn’t a premier athlete but he is already getting into the paint whenever he wants and he knows to draw contact. Derrick seems to avoid contact with his athleticism. Drawing contact leads to and1s and having yer opponent’s big man foul out.
As of right now, Evans is the superior player even tho he’s not a superior athlete like Rose is.

I'm anxious to see Omri Casspi.
Aside from me being an Israeli and all, he’s fun to watch from what I’ve seen of him(He exploded against Washington). He’s pretty big, can shoot the three and has decent handles. I wish we took him over JJ.

The Bulls shrink like a dick in cold water.
I see Evans more of a sg with ball handling skill, Brandon Roy type of player,
while Derrick is more of a scoring pg. And Evans is coached by Westphal and Derrick by Vinny. You can’t really compare the two.
Btw, I’m totally jealous of Sacramento Kings right now.

Taj Gibson
Omri has been touted as the steal of the 1st round here in Sacramento, but statistically Gibson looks to be every bit the value pick. Could anyone that has watched Taj play a lot (I’ve only seen him play 6-7 times) chime in?

by NBA Observer on Dec 21, 2009 3:19 PM CST up reply actions
Omri is better than Taj, from what I've seen.
Casspi looks like a starting caliber player, Taj is an old rookie who’s ceiling appears to be first big man off of the bench. They’re both the same height, but Casspi is quicker, faster, more explosive and also has a far better shot. I don’t know how sustainable his 45.5 3PT% is, but it’s infinitely better than Taj’s.
Who’s the steal of the draft? Looks like Tyreke Evans is, at this point, though Blake Griffin hasn’t played yet. Many will say Jennings, but his supporting numbers are weaker than Tyreke’s, mainly shooting percentage.

Some decent 2nd rounders, too
Sam Young (36), DeJuan Blair (37), Marcus Thornton (39), Chase Budinger (40).
Was Thomas’ injury a major factor in Gibson getting minutes? I’m not sure that Casspi would have seen the light of day had it not been for Garcia and Martin’s injuries.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
Sadly, not too much
Vinny is the major factor for Gibson getting minutes. In fact, it would of have been a toss up between Miller and Gibson closing games out while Tyrus sulks on the bench.
yeah, it was not entirely sickness/injury that put Tyrus down on the depth chart
it was the phasing out by Vinny, and this went back to the Celtics series. Apparently they had some words after a benching.

it really solidifies their philosophy
they’d rather have someone that is submissive over simply good at basketball. bah
I could see Vinny's perspective
he needs victories, and sees Taj as more coachable (though not as good). And it’s not like Tyrus gets any support from upper management, since they’re pushing him out the door for cap space. It’s like the decision was made a year ago and Reinsdorf will tell us about it in July.

Looking at what he’s said in the past and especially how he reacts to criticism it goes back to his ego and lack of intelligence that makes it impossible for him to ever be a decent coach.

That's what I say when I am trying to give Thomas too much credit.
I’d openly defy an idiot coach, too. (Boylan or Del Negro.)

exactly
He had a great series against Boston and he was still on the bench for most of the second half. He should get an award for not pulling a Sprewell on Vinny.
Tyrus is vocal,
but he’s made out to be more of a malcontent than he is. He’s publicly said he liked playing for Skiles, who is much harder on his guys than Vinny. I don’t buy what the organization/media is selling about Tyrus, he’s a good guy and stays out of trouble. SO what if he disagrees a bit with a coach. Every player has differing opinions with a coach on at least one occasion.

Well...yes
In Johnson’s defense, you can see that he has a handle, shot, and athleticism that make him a very interesting player at his size. Looking only at that stuff, it’s possible to convince yourself that this guy can do good things in the NBA.
But he’s a horrible pick for the Bulls, as would be anyone who needs to be developed. That problem is exacerbated by a roster that is so thin that it needs immediate contributions from draft picks.
Of course with VDN, it’s hard to say if Johnson is simply so horrible he should never see the floor, or if he wouldn’t be so horrible if he got some minutes and a chance to develop in games. We’re mostly relying on VDN’s judgement that the former is the case.

Maybe I haven't seen enough of JJ
so maybe you can explain to me why his handle, shot and athleticism is even above average for his position(3/4?). I guess I’m looking at the hybrids around the league like Tyrus and Josh Smith and JJ looks way below average.

like Blair?
I thought he would be perfect for the Bulls not only because of his skills but he could have a career ending injury which would could happen right when the rookie contract ended.
Or a competent perimeter player like Budinger, Ellington, etc.
They could have pulled a Pritchslap and moved their picks for lower spots in the 1st or 2nd round to acquire more NBA-ready guys at a lower cost. This is obvious armchair-GMing, but it’s warranted with our lovely team.

Deng still is as limited as he was last year, two years ago and three years ago.
He still can’t dribble, moves awkwardly and has (lots of) trouble making use of isolations run for him. He’s pretty much a 6"9 white guy who happens to be black. That’s not being racist, it’s just saying that Deng isn’t much of an athlete by NBA standards.

Indeed I did, but the majority of the game he took Williams off the dribble and got to the hoop.
Sometimes Lu is predictable, but on this team he’s the 2nd best scorer.
And in any case, I’d much rather see Rose and Deng just take turns running to the basket at full force then the team try to replicate the 2004 Kings. I’ve bashed Brad enough, so let me just say Vinny is a complete boob, and not in a good way.

of a drugged circus elephant
It's a toss up for me
I really like both Evans and Rose. Evans is really strong and physical and gets to the hoop. Rose is an athletic freak with crazy speed and quickness. One thing that really bothered me about the Hawks game was the end of regulation play. The Bulls couldn’t even get the ball to Rose at all on and end up with a bad shot. Right after that game was over, NBATV showed the end of the Kings-Bucks game. The Kings play involved Evans being the one to inbound the ball and he got it right back, dribbled around a pick set by Jason Thompson (the person he inbounded to), went to the hoop and scored the game winner. It just outlined that the biggest issue for Rose right now is VDN not using him properly and failing to put him in the best positions to succeed.

Hes got a decent chance of becoming a good shot blocker one day. That clutch rejection on Rondo is still awesome. Too me he just needs more experience. I definitely see him as having a higher ceiling than Evans. Rose to me is more dynamic.
Evans is taller and has a waaaaaay better jumper than Rose. Its more refined and smoooth. Rose still looks like hes figuring out his at times. His height gives him a greater ability to collect rebounds. Hes bigger than Rose.
Both have shown flashes of brilliance. Both have potential too be future allstars. But so much can happen in a couple years. I ultimately remains to be seen… which of them will be greater than the other…
In my opinion this question is quite simple and short sighted… Its too early to say who is better than the other. Both are still young and haven’t even reached their potential…
Again, I assess that Rose has a higher ceiling than Evans. Evans got a better jumper. Hes getting more PPGs right now but lets see his playoff stats…. if that happens.
Watching Rose in the playoffs show most of us what he can do. I would love see what Evans can do to. But it hasn’t happened yet.
