Trading Away a Season for Expirings (Salmons to Boston)

If we all agree this season is a lost cause, and everyone wants to make a deal.  I think I have one that makes sense.  Keeping in mind that it won't make us better this year.

Boston Gets Salmons

Chicago gets Tony Allen and Scalabrine

While the Boston faithful love Scalabrine, Salmons is certainly an upgrade for them over Tony Allen.   Hollinger even mentioned in his chat today that the Celtics could improve with a Posey type of player.  Ideally a 3/4, but I think a solid 3 would help.  Salmons plays better at the 3 and plays better when he doesn't have to be burdened with the scoring load.  I'm sure he would also do better playing against 2nd teams then starters.  And in the trade machine the Celtics get +2 wins with John Fish.

It would be nice to Trade Captain Kirk, actually it would've been nice to do that last year.  But I can't think of any logical destination for him that would include only expirings.  So that's why I think it makes more sense to unload Salmons because his contract is more appealing.  And the teams we need to be targeting in trades are the contenders.  Because they are the only ones who will want our role players for expring contracts.

Fine with me. As long as Salmons is off the team and doesn’t have a chance to opt in. What does Allen’s contract look like? Boston won’t trade Scalabrine, he’s the token pasty on the team.

yup trade machine has it at around $600k

This is a damned good idea. It gets the 2010 cap space at a level not determined by Salmons’ whim.

not necessarily

still could be right on the money, give or take $2-3 million, positive or negative.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

This is pretty good. Plus the Bulls management might actually have the nads to do this. Three additional advantages, first it makes putting Hinrich/potential trade aquisition(TMac?) into the 2 guard slot a no brainer. Second, it improves the Bulls depth(slightly). Last but not least, it gives us 2 of our most valuable players from last years playoff series. Allen particularly was the Bulls ‘secret weapon’. Even then he wanted to be a Bull…

by kingles on Dec 18, 2009 1:19 AM CST up reply actions

That's not bad at all

Those two players are better than Hunter, Pargo and Gray at least and Scalabrine can make some threes. Of course it’s mostly about the cap space but of course, GarPax doesn’t really have a plan so they would never think of this.

there will probably be a series of meetings in July

to determine John Salmons’ contract situation. You can’t dedicate that time now, no sir.

though Tony Allen will probably have to go into witness protection.

Witness protection sounds like playing time for James Johnson.

another bonus

Marquis Daniels is out months, so there could be an immediate need filled for Boston.

please add a unrec option

aaron gray tries very hard and is going to be in the nba for a long time, even if only as a backup. i dont understand why you rip him like a douche

I used to think coaches were overrated...

Yes please for us. And I actually think think this helps Boston too

But won’t Salmons demand to start?…he doesn’t like to come off the bench, remember ; >

[sickest thing: Bulls bowed to him]

by RichKarp on Dec 17, 2009 4:45 PM CST reply actions

I don't even think he demanded it

he had the myth going of ‘magical starter juice’, in that he supposedly only sucked when playing off the bench.

And he certainly proved that trend wrong.

it was never an issue

when he got here Deng was out. When Deng got back, Gordon was gone.

Although, the Bulls may want to reconsider it with Hinrich coming back. I’d do it just to see Salmons pout on the bench. Its always fun to watch bad players bitch about playing time. “I could have missed that shot!”

Demand to start?!?!?!

SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by K_yle33 on Dec 17, 2009 6:26 PM CST reply actions

Salmons isn’t that bad… Make him the 6th-7th man and he’ll do a fine job…. Or we can send him away, I wouldn’t mind that too much either.

by kingles on Dec 18, 2009 1:02 AM CST up reply actions

The plan should be to get as many expiring

Contracts and play a lineup that includes Salmons and Johnson thus ensuring a realistic shot at getting John Wall and a high profile free agent to go with Rose and Noah.

by Duck99 on Dec 17, 2009 7:35 PM CST via mobile reply actions

I forgot Tony Allen gets death threats in the CHI, I really don’t think he would want to come here

by C Smoove on Dec 17, 2009 8:05 PM CST reply actions

Scalabrine

Boston wont do it because they would have no room for Salmons at the 3 after Daniels comes back. Eddie House is a better fit for the C’s backup 2 spot as well because at least he knows his role and is a better shooter.
The sad truth is Scalabrine is Boston 5th PF, but he would be the 1st PF off the bench in Chicago. Or maybe even start, sure he doesn’t have anywhere near the athleticism of TT but at least he tries to play defense and has an outside shot and this thing called "basketball IQ".

by Scal4theallstargame on Dec 17, 2009 10:37 PM CST reply actions

Give me a break

Scalabrine would not start for the Bulls. He would be the 3rd power forward here, and would only play because the Bulls have no 3pt shooting. I’ll let you decide if Salmons fits your team, but leave the crazy homerism in Boston.

I don't know

if I’d really like the idea of seeing scalabrine and miller spreading the court. Two big, slow white guys chucking 3s…. Maybe if Deng keeps workin in the post it might work?

It would only work

if we got slow white guys to fill the rest of our positions, too! Where’s John Bryant when you need him?

Salmons opt out?

What are you basing this on? Without his salary on the books, the Bulls have options. If Salmons doesn’t opt out, the Bulls are very limited.

While this is true, I think the Bulls can bet a better deal for Salmons

He’d certainly bring something useful for a contending team, so I think we ought to shoot higher.

by Sports2 on Dec 18, 2009 4:35 PM CST up reply actions

Salmons' salary next year would be $5.8 million

I think the odds are very good that somebody will give him more than that on the open market. I’m not saying he deserves that much, but he will get it.

by Poloplaya14 on Dec 18, 2009 6:06 PM CST up reply actions

yeah

i’d think if he can bounce back in the least, someone will at least offer him the full MLE.

Salmons is having a crappy year so people aren’t gonna be blowin up his agent’s phone. The worse year he has, the more chance that he opts in. I don’t see why he would opt out considering how crappy he has been. Let’s eliminate that chance by just shipping his ass out.

by C Smoove on Dec 18, 2009 12:06 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, he's used his "eye test"

Don’t worry. they all have that one that tells you everything you know.

Huh? Yeh I’ve watched him play and it looks like trash.

by C Smoove on Dec 19, 2009 11:32 AM CST up reply actions

What about Dallas?

We could deal him for Williams, Humphries and Beaubois.

There are 2 reasons to consider something like this for Chicago. #1 cap space will be improved by a little over $5 million, similar to the Boston deal. But unlike the Boston deal, you get a nice backup point guard prospect. Beaubois is very athletic and we could give him a look for 2 years to see if he could be Rose’s backup. If Beaubois is successful in a backup PG role, it will be easier to deal Kirk, and I think we’re more likely to get a useful piece for Kirk than we are for the fish.

I love the concept of a fish deal and I think he’ll be more valuable as the trade deadline approaches. I see him as the most likely to be dealt this year.
