Around SBN: PHOTOS: Mike Moser's Dunk Face Is Spectacular

But NBA coaching sources told ESPN.com that one name already on the Bulls' radar is New Jersey's just-dismissed Lawrence Frank. Yet money is bound to be an issue, as it is everywhere in the NBA. Del Negro's contract is guaranteed through next season and Chicago's appetite for spending on a new coach when it's also still paying off some of Skiles' deal remains to be seen.

What has Frank done?

Inherited a team that went to back-to-back Finals, and led them to… a losing record over 6 seasons.

He’s consistently buried young guys on his bench in favor of crappy veterans (Dooling, Simmons, Hayes). This year, he’s inactived Terrence Williams. As in, 0 minutes per game, playing Dooling and Alston instead.

I kinda thought that Frank was a crazy choice for coach when he came into the league. He had never been a head coach at any level and never played even high school ball. Six years later, he hasn’t done anything to change my opinion.

by YaoPau on Dec 11, 2009 4:39 PM CST up reply actions

well, he had more experience than VDN

didn’t they win like 12 straight when he was hired? maybe we’d get a similar bump :)

It’s pretty unfair to compare his teams to the finals teams, especially since the finals teams weren’t that great in the first place. Frank’s certainly competent.

But yes, he has long buried young players. Luckily we have nobody to bury them for.

Perhaps the 16 straight losses when he was fired

was karma’s way of kicking him back in the ass?

This Harris/Lopez roster came aboard recently. He had Kidd/Carter/Jefferson, all in their primes, for 5 of his 6 years as coah. I agree he’s an improvement over Vinny, but I really hope we can do better.

by YaoPau on Dec 11, 2009 5:06 PM CST up reply actions

i agree

Frank has done nothing to merit the respect he gets around the league

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 11, 2009 9:46 PM CST up reply actions

If he got that much respect he probably would have been better

But I have heard stories he was an amazing and tireless worker at Indiana U. That counts for something

by Sports2 on Dec 12, 2009 6:47 AM CST up reply actions

I didn't know people respected him.

Seems like he got along relatively well with Jason Kidd, who’s not an easy guy to handle.

I’m still gung-ho for Avery, Van Gundy, or Byron Scott. But, Frank seems like the cheapest hire, and that’s all that really matters.

The 2009 White Sox....like a 40 degree day.

by Ozzie Montana on Dec 12, 2009 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

I'd love this.

Devin Harris exploded under Frank and was getting to the free throw line at a ridiculous rate. This is exactly what I want to see happen with Derrick, and it’s really about the only thing I care about right now with this team. But will JR shell out the cash needed? Highly doubtful.

by Illini15 on Dec 11, 2009 3:09 PM CST reply actions

not sure but I have always had a strange respect for Frank. Kinda like skiles lite.

Well VDN is getting canned after the season anyways.. why not get ahead of the game and bring in Frank now?

Money is a concern?!? Really?

When you’re thinking about hiring a guy who just got fired for going 0-16?!?

I dunno what’s crazier. To think that this team is that concerned about the money that it’s setting it’s sights on that guy in the first place. Or that it’s concerned he’d be too pricey.

by Sports2 on Dec 11, 2009 3:15 PM CST reply actions

that's kinda my issue

he upped devin harris’ game for sure, but he did just go 0-16. :/

i think i’d rather have scott.

Frank, Scott, Avery whatever

I just can’t help but be angry at the gross mismanagement and lack of foresight this organization has. I keep reading the VDN’s contract is guaranteed for another season and this is the second time I’ve seen something saying they are STILL paying Skiles. I mean wtf would make them give a guy who has never coached before 3 GUARANTEED years when the owner is cheap?

Um

I’d like to correct your sentence to “lack of foreskin.” It’s a stretch, but what I’m saying is that we have no balls (hey, I said it was a stretch!)

Yeah but...

if there’s no foreskin it hard to stretch. Too far?

Not for me

I found that to be a nice add-on sir.

A very cutting remark

Actually, I much prefer Byron Scott, who know how to coach point guards.

I'd be ok with that I guess...

but I would rather have his predecessor, Byron Scott, instead.

Why don't the Bulls move Vinny into the front office or scouting?

Then he can still work for them.. earn his check.

Scott makes more sense if you ask me

But he’s gonna be replacing Phil Jackson soon anyways so I don’t see it happening

If I had to choose, my top 3 in order would be

1) Van Gundy
2) Scott
3) Johnson
4) Can I still say D’Antoni?

by Option27 on Dec 11, 2009 3:30 PM CST reply actions

I'd replace 3 with Doug Collins

but other than that I’m with ya man.

but he does have a history of changing the fortunes of franchises.

We never went too far with him
Detroit didn’t either
And God knows about the Wizards disaster

by Option27 on Dec 11, 2009 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

Funny

I don’t hear anyone mention Eddie (soon to be fired himself it seems) Jordan….who was all the rage last season….

I think ideally if Hube Brown was 15 years younger I’d be all for him…

Hubie Brown
Jeff Van Gundy
Byron Scott
Lawrence Frank
Scottie Pippen

Those are my 5…

Sadly....through thick and thin....

Uh, yeah, it is guaranteed. Good gawd who does the negotiating for the organization?

12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

by NBA Observer on Dec 11, 2009 3:45 PM CST reply actions

It also makes you think if we were lied to?

Didn’t everyone think it was a 2 year deal at first?

by Option27 on Dec 11, 2009 3:47 PM CST up reply actions

I remember JR on monsters in the morning in it's first few days on air..

he wasn’t sure if Vinny’s contract was a two or three year deal and I believe he even said it’s a two year deal with a third year option. But he wasn’t sure. I was kinda shocked.

First it's kinda weird that this information wasn't given to us at the start of his tenure

Secondly, it’s even weirder when the owner doesn’t sound like he knows the details of the contract fully as well

by Option27 on Dec 11, 2009 4:10 PM CST up reply actions

Is that 3rd year truly guaranteed?

By the time it’s fiscally allowable to fire Vinny, Rose will be swigging bottles of Courvosier in the locker room.

So that’s confirmation (I guess) of two things I didn’t know.

I swear, wasn’t part of the reasoning for hiring Del Cheapo was that Skiles took his payout all at once?

they were paying him for like 2 years. but i heard it wasn’t actually all that much each year.

by Jaina on Dec 11, 2009 4:23 PM CST up reply actions

I'm going to throw a name out there. The Bulls won't hire him because they're incompetent, but

eventually some team will and he’s going to be a damn fine coach. The name is Mike Budenholzer. He’s Popovich’s right hand man and lead assistant in San Antonio. He’s the guy I’d like to get, but we’ll inevitably do something stupid.

1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box

by fundamentallysound on Dec 11, 2009 6:34 PM CST reply actions

Is he cheap? Cuase if so then it could work!

But with VDN’s 3rd year guaranteed, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him stay for the duration of his contract. Good times.
