Vinny answers his critics
So basically, since none of us have played in the NBA, we have no idea what we're talking about. I didn't realize you needed to be a basketball genius to figure out that losing by 30 points every night is bad, but apparently you do. Stupid and arrogant is no way to go through life, Vinny.

I kinda feel bad for him.
I don’t think he’s a great coach but this roster is on Gar. Not many coaches in the NBA can win with this collection of garbage.

How is this roster on Gar outside of JJ, Gibson and Pargo. Deng, Kurt, Tyrus, Noah and Grey all Paxson guys. Wasn’t the Miller, Salmons trade Paxson’s last stand? This is all on Paxson if you ask me.
Gar was Director of Player Personnel before the promotion
He was part of the destruction. He can’t be sidelined as just another suit.

I have no idea.. i guess i don't consider Paxson part of the organization. Really he just shows up when he doesn't have to talk.
I think JR couldn’t fire him just like his reasoning for not hiring Doug Collins.(He couldn’t fire good people) It’s a just a title they gave him and relieved him of the gm position. He’s a son of Jerry.
I think a large amount of the blame on Gar(by me) is because he negotiated Deng’s absurd contract and put together the back end of this roster with
Hunter
Gray
two rookies( one started)
cutting byars when they had a lack of guard depth.
i said before the season I was worried about the depth of the Bulls….. but in preseason I felt Byars did a pretty good job of stretching the floor and giving them size. So I kinda backed off of that. Then they ended up cutting Byars and I said I was completely confused with what Gar was doing.
This roster is on Gar to me.
Which all this again goes back to my fanpost that JR is the real problem because he hires character people over people that do a great job and don’t get along with him. But nobody reads what i write. Because of my hate for luol Deng and Kirk Hinrich. Or they think I’m dumb.

no.
The Miller and Salmons trade is on gar also because Paxson had already quit.

Wow, one day passes and his attitude explodes
He handled the question just fine at the United Center after the Nets loss.
“I don’t worry about that stuff. That’s what Jerry and John consider. It’s not my job.”
Now he’s just losing it.

Jesus, what an asshole.
I’d ask how Paxson and Reinsdorf were conned by this guy, but the price tag certainly was a convincing argument.
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.
The con
“Hi. I’m Vinny del Negro. I don’t cost much. I’ve never coached. I…” – VDN
“You had us at ’don’t cost much’” – Gar Paxdorf

This is the second time I've heard VDN use the "you do your job, I do mine" argument
The first was when Silvy told him to play Derrick Rose down the stretch.
But the media is the mouthpiece for the Bulls’ customers. If I’m in a restaurant and I say “this hamburger is cold”, I wouldn’t expect a chef say “You do your job, I’ll do mine. You have no idea what it’s like to be a chef.”

He does have a point
If any of us coached the bulls team with no credentials, i bet we cant even win 4 games. We can criticize because its easy too from outside looking in but Im sure that when any of us our in that position, we would suck. We probably would not quit the job either because its a job we would all like to do.
I find it annoying to think we fans always think we could do so much better. In reality, that is not the case.
While inexperience is at fault here for many of the outcomes of the games we’ve had its not even close to being his fault.
1) Obviously guys are injured
2) We failed to build around D Rose with the right players and coaches
3)99% of the problem is management
People should give this guy a break and realize that our team sucks and management sucks. Management made the mistake of hiring the wrong coach for the bulls. But can you blame the guy for not wanting to quit?
I personally do not think hes a great coach by any means at this time. But that doesnt mean he cant be a great coach in the future. In my opinion, the focus should be on reinsdorf and his unwillingness to spend some money to build a better franchise.
No, he's full of horseshit
He doesn’t need to insult the fans’ intelligence. “We fight as a team and stick together as a team.” Does he thinks fans are stupid enough to believe that? The Bulls quit last night, plain and simple.
Its better than saying we suck
and all the obvious things anyone could say. What would you say.
“I suck, I know, my system is flawed, Im a new coach”
but I do admit the cliches are getting a bit much but its better than being boylan and saying shit that would make things much worse.

cliches are fine if he's admitting mistakes
I want the coach to take some blame so that I think he knows he’s screwed up. I honestly don’t think he does. He’s like Bush2; maybe he’s made a minor mistake here or there, but nothing really too egregious. Unfortunately, motivating your players and playing the best players are a pretty big deal… two things Del Negro has shown he’s incapable of doing.

Did you watch the Nets game?
Kiki barely knew how to walk a sideline but he still ‘coached’ the team to a W.

his team was at full strength(sort of)
We just brought hinrich in after missing a bunch of games and TT is still out. TT would have changed a lot of Brook lopez’s shots. TT is very important to this team, and it sucks that many ppl fail to realize it.

don't take all my good points and claim them as yours.
just kidding only doug does that.
We are the worlds dumbest city!- Dan Bernstein
But he could be a good coach at some time in the future!
Unfortunately, that time is 2025.
that wasnt my point
My point is, unless we can get someone who is proven that he is better than VDN, there is no point in getting a replacement. We could have gotten D’antoni but management f’ed that up as well.

I agree that Del Negro's gotten a crap roster...
…but I also don’t think that unless he had 5 definite starters and 4 definite subs and 5 horrible players, that he would figure out who those were.

I don't know that most people are saying WE could do better...
…unless in jest. Most say give someone else in the org a chance or (in my case) “Oh I wish D’Antoni were here!”

Good for Vinny
I like that he’s not backing down to the media trolls….
He knows the story, but what would you rather him say, we suck, Gar and Paxson have saddled me with complete crap, I got guys not caring out there, guys who care but aren’t healthy and a constant vengeful eye on my every move in this city.
Look if I ran the team from the back office we might be a lot different….I’m the guy remember that stuck with Thomas and Noah (he DID folks) when they came to camp out of shape and not ready…I am the guy who started Ben Gordon for good measure, gave Rose all teh playing time in the world despite having a typically starting quality high paid PG, and I sat back while the marketing team allowed the image of Kurt as a combo guard be published….
No he’s saying that some of the criticsm on him isn’t fair (it isn’t), and saying that he’s not lying down….but trying to fight through it.
Good for you Vinny. I mean I’m sure you’re gone by Monday at the latest, but like many before you, you weren’t necessarily the problem in Chicago, it was the mgmt around you….
Sadly....through thick and thin....
I would lurve VDN
to say something about the roster. I know it would shorten his tenure with the Bulls, but at least he’d be telling the truth.

Well
He kind of did in a way the game before last either the Nets game or the one before that, when he was being grilled and essentially said what can I do, Pargo’s got a bad hip right now and I’m playing him, and Lindsey’s even playing, Aaron’s been hurt….etc….
I mean he had to talk about those guys and he is not dumb, he was in the league on lesser talent for 12 years for nothing…..and was an executive in Phx too…..
Sadly....through thick and thin....
He has just not directly
He basically says he’s dealing with what he has which translates to “this team sucks what can I do?”

God he's such a mimbo
“You have to be able to suck it up sometimes and understand. Hey, I get frustrated too when we’re not playing well and we’re trying to find things that work. You just have to keep going to work. That’s all you can do.”
Asked what criticism has been unfair, Del Negro backtracked.
“Oh, I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t get into that. You guys write that stuff.”
WTH? I don’t question his coaching ability because he sucks, but there is obviously no hope of improvement when he’s just so mentality handicapped.
exactly
the lack of admitting a mistake is pretty horrible for someone new at something.

He doesn't have to admit mistakes in public
Just as long as he realizes the mistakes. Unfortunately, he apparently doesn’t realize it because nothing has changed.
it also could be his players stopped responding
or maybe this team already reached its peak with the current roster it has. The only way I can see this team improving w/o TT or a healthy Hinrich is if VDN plays Rose and Noah the full game (or close to it). I mean really pargo, hunter playing much isnt helping but he has no choice?
by aznlildelfin on Dec 10, 2009 8:10 PM CST up reply actions
yup
he really believes everything he’s saying! His mantra of “energy, hustle, running, playing together..etc” is ALL that he has in that empty head of his. He is just not mentally capable of handling this job. People/media give him the excuse of experience and injuries and they are true to an extent. But I think it has more to do with his character(he’s never wrong!) and understanding of basketball that will prevent him from even being an average coach. I’d rather have someone that had the capability to learn from their own mistakes and able to absorb minds around him and grow over someone whose only qualification is a former player. Especially considering our young roster we need someone that can teach our players intricate parts of the game that they may not be able to see. It’s great to motivate someone, but that can go only so far.
A real Coach
Could you imagine Larry Brown just sitting there night after night playing with this talent and not complain at all, forget about it.
When I first read the ESPN headline
I thought it said Del Negro Fired!
Then I saw it said “Fires Back”
I got excited for a split sec
