New Blog: The Boxing Bulletin for Boxing Fans!

UPDATE: Didn't catch this from Mike McGraw this morning: The Bulls said Tyrus Thomas arrived at Tuesday's morning shootaround at the Berto Center, spoke to trainer Fred Tedeschi and was sent home to get some rest. Coach Vinny Del Negro said Thomas saw a doctor in the afternoon.

That helps the 'he's actually sick' story, but I'd still like more of a statement from the Bulls. They likely know how this looks, it seems they should be more emphatically denying this is disciplinary.

"He's not feeling very well right now," Del Negro said.

From KC Johnson, who gives no indication that Tyrus is actually sick. Is it that hard to find out?

Great, another 3 days of "Tyrus is a little shit who won't take direction."

Fuck Lindsey Hunter. Do all Chicago teams just enjoy destroying the value of troubled players, and end up having to give them away?

This must be quite the flu

This situation is really becoming idiotic. If he really is sick, the organization needs to be vigorously defending him, because nearly everyone is assuming he’s faking it. If he’s not sick and this is some kind of disciplinary action, then they should stop lying about him having a flu.

Maybe we can just give Tyrus away, and completely write off the 06 draft. Speaking of which, Thabo has become a useful player in OKC. We all knew Gordon wasn’t going to be back, and yet they gave Thabo away for nothing. You’re telling me we couldn’t have used him as a 4th guard for 15 minutes a game?

by Big D on Nov 4, 2009 12:38 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

They could have used Thabo last season in the playoffs but nooooooooo.

Thabo would never get time. Yet Lindsey Old Man Hunter’s ass was out there when the Celtics were kicking the living shit out of the Bulls in game 3. Sefo would have been useful when Rose was being dominated against Rondo at times. But of course this move was about not extending Sefo either and getting a cheap replacement like Taj Gobson.

waitaminit.

When was the last time you or anyone else you work with had the flu?. As a peer, when someone says fIu, I usually give at least 2-3 days without a doctors note before I even think of starting to distrust them. The way you wrote this seems like you really have it in for Tyrus, or are simply prone to jumping to conclusions and sliding down slippery slopes.

Seriously, a contagious sickness is not something you fight through, or put your coworkers through. When the docs can corroborate this, this makes you the idiot, not the situation. The organization does not need to be ‘vigorously defending him’ because they presented us fans with the facts: He’s sick.

enough said.

Have you read any of the local media?

Did you read John Jackson in the Sun-Times (he actually put “flu” in quotation marks), or Rosenbloom’s column? Have you listened to local sports radio? Many people are assuming he’s faking it, and I guess it’s hard to blame them when the Bulls’ own beat writers are strongly implying that he isn’t really sick. So if he’s not, the Bulls do need to make it clear that he’s really sick. And you must have some kind of reading comprehension problem, because there’s nothing in anything I wrote above that indicates I think he’s faking it (I don’t think that, by the way).

No speculation at all. Just detailing how it’s been a tough week for Ty. If people say he’s sick, have to go with it.

I asked back ’isn’t there another way to find out’? I tried to do so without sounding like a dick. Hope he doesn’t take it that way :)

Then why isn't his just reporting he is sick

and stop it with the wink-wink nudge-nudge side of things. Players get sick all the time. Why can’t he just write that he is sick and not make it sound like a conspiracy or quiet suspension.

And if he isn’t sick and the other side of it is true as a reporter he really needs to do his job and report it.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

KC responds
Everyone I’ve talked—-on and off record—to says he’s sick.

I replied that it’s odd that the Organization doesn’t feel need to emphatically denounce speculation then.

I sort of get what KC is saying when claiming he’s not speculating. He’s just laying out the timeline. I guess by doing so at all he’s leaving it wide open for speculation, but really it’s mostly us just believing the worst in all parties.

The org needs to make it clear he's really sick then, because nobody believes it

All it does is reinforce the stereotype that NBA players are lazy malingerers. Not that there isn’t some truth in that, but if you’re the Bulls I’d think you would want to rebut that. Especially since they may be looking to trade Tyrus at some point during the season. Why the hell would anyone want to trade for him if they think he’s faking an illness? All the speculation does is hurt his value, but then again, that’s what the Bulls have been doing with Tyrus ever since they drafted him, so why stop now?

Hopefully, Tyrus really is ill

because if this is some type of rift between he and the organization, the Bulls will be hurting. Tyrus is by no means a great power forward, but without him, our production at that position falls off a cliff. Deng won’t have too many games like his last battling Varejao, Garnett, Haslem and the other legit power forwards in the NBA (note, something Milwaukee does not have,) and Taj is playing at barely above train wreck levels right now.

It is surprising to me that on a team based on speed, slashing, taking it to the basket and which is in need of versatile scorers, a guy like JJ doesn’t get PT. At the very least he is a mismatch at the power forward position because of his ability to drive the ball to the hoop. If TT is out, I want to see some JJ.

I don't understand why there is any speculation on whether or not he is sick.

The Bulls said it on their website.

KC Johnson, and his history of snarky comments about the team, should be ashamed of himself for planting any seed of doubt…and we should know better than this after reading him these past couple of years.

I agree, but it's not just him

John Jackson, David Schuester as well. Steve Rosenbloom took it and ran with a ‘trade thomas’ column.

I still think the Bulls could do more to insist it isn’t disciplinary. Or maybe there’s nothing they can do as I simply don’t trust them.

That's because McGraw is a real reporter

although I’m admittedly not sure what to make of this. No matter what we plan on doing with Tyrus, he needs to be on the floor. Playing games with his PT and dodging questions about his production are only going to lower his trade value.

Everyone parroted a similar theme. Tyrus doesn't have many friends in the media.

So it’s pretty lame of the franchise to not protect one of their own. If KC went after Derrick Rose like this, they’d most certainly shoot him down.

Yeah

BG arrived on time for the team bus (or plane…something like that) and then later on he got a note in his locker saying that he had been late and was in trouble. After BG had never been late his entire career and apparently wasn’t late this time either. If it had been an issue why didn’t they just talk to him when they saw him next? Why a late, passive aggressive note?

Maybe I'm being naive

but just like the Derrick Rose injury, I’m gonna go with what’s being reported. If they say he has the flu, then he has the flu. I don’t see how it would benefit the team to hide any disciplinary issue with Tyrus seeing as they obviously don’t have any great future plans with him. So, if he really was having issues they’d probably let it out, if for nothing else, to expedite the process of getting him out of town.

I didn't think Derrick was injured up until last night.

On both of his dunks he didn’t get nearly as high as he did last year. He’s clearly not 100%. This Tyrus deal is different, as there has been plenty of other stuff going on between Tyrus and VDN, and now he shows up sick to practice two days in a row and gets sent home? Right after getting called out in front of the entire squad by his head coach and then in front of the media by a teammate who’s old enough to be his father? Color me skeptic.

If.....

Tyrus is sick, he must be sick as a dog to miss a basketball game especially with his job on the line with the coach looking for excuses to play Taj. If this is a punishment against Tyrus it’s just plain messed up. Now here’s what we know, TT was pissed at least about Vinny getting on him about the defensive thing in practice and TT was probably upset about his minutes too. We know it was bad enough for Lyndsey to play team leader in the situation and chastise Tyrus. Then we hear the very next day Tyrus is sent home cause he wasn’t feeling good and that he won’t even play in the game two days later….from a flu……If Tyrus is doing this cause he’s mad, he’s wrong, he can only show Vinny how wrong he is by being the best player on the court! I think the truth is Tyrus was a little sick, Vinny said “Yes..send him home!” They’ll let him rest as long as possible hoping a great rotation can be established while he’s gone so he’ll never have to start again. This is too coincidental to me. Maybe I’m wrong, I’ve been wrong many times before, but there is something I feel more to this and if something is being hidden it’s on the part of the organisation in there belittling this man.

You do all realize

That employers (like the Bulls) can’t really go into great detail about an employee (likeTyrus) illness? Your boss can’t tell everyone in the world about your illness other than he/she is ill unless you give them permission. If TT has the flu, he’s probably not thinking about calling up the media and discussing his temperature. H1N1 is not fun to have, if that is what he has, and home is the place for him. One of the side effects is pnuemonia.

by KT on Nov 4, 2009 7:19 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The rest of the league can say a guy is sick

and even that it is H1N1 (LBJ) and no one thinks anything but that he is sick. Basketball players constantly have their health in the news. But when news breaks in Chicago they leave it up in the air and lay hints that it is something more than that when it is probably just the flu. Ask a casual sports fan in a week why Tyrus was out and they’ll likely say he got trouble in practice and wasn’t allowed to play. Skimming the Trib will make you think that at least.

What we are saying is that we believe he has the flu but that local media is being coy about it and implying otherwise. The team has yet to put those rumors to rest and stand by Tyrus in what is already turning into a difficult season for him. That is what we are saying here. I don’t know why you are tied up with privacy law stuff. They don’t have to show a photo of Tyrus in is underwear puking in the bathroom to stand by their player.

It's not exactly a huge chore for the Bulls to release a press statement stating

“Tyrus is sick, that’s all there is to this story. Shut your word hole KC.”

Instead they let the local media run wild with the “Tyrus is a prick” tangent. Crazy as it sounds, there are lots of people who read the papers and form their opinions based on what other people say, not the objective facts.

We really can't figure out WHAT Vinny is doing

His knowledge is light years ahead of ours. Although we do know he thinks we have no damn chance at winning a championship with our young team, and that he doesn’t have a problem playing a 24 year old rookie that has no upside at PF.

regardless of Thomas being sick or not,

its absolutely disgusting with the way the Bulls have treated him.

They probably said “Shut the fuck up” when he said Hi when he first walked into the UC.

If I remember correctly

when Tyrus first arrived Sam said Tyrus was an ass to the people who worked at the Berto.

Arrogant, insecure, indifferent and inconsistent play.

I blame the owner, the president, the GM and the coach – welcome to Bitch-at-Bulls blog.

Which is one

reason I can’t blame all of his troubles on the organization. I like TT as a player but sometimes I think he is his own worst enemy.

Yeah, poor Tyrus.

I wanna cry.

These poor draft picks who get treated so mean – focus, play defense, stop pouting, improve — how mean!!

you're lucky I don't keep commenters to such high standards

I am Lucky.

So too is Tyrus lucky not to be in Memphis or some other sink hole.

Maybe Tyrus is just another Joe Smith, some guy who was selected too high and too much pressure put on him to be a go to guy when he’s not that kind of player.

Are they picking on him? I don’t see the Bulls org a scapegoating players to deflect from horrible front office decisions. I also find little sympathy for Tyrus position as a 4th year player expected to produce.

If VDN is using playing time or Taj to motivate Tyrus, the solution for this vet is to get angry and do something about it.

Last year the erratic Don Nelson started the undrafted Rob Kurtz at PF in place of 14th pick Anthony Randolph. Randolph proceeded to beat up on Kurtz in practice including throwing some elbows that Stephen Jackson called cheap shots.

I don't even know where to begin.

Don Nelson’s handling of young players is nothing to aspire to emulate.

Right, what Tyrus needs to do is assult a teammate.

That will surely get him in the good graces of the organization and head coach.

Why are you here?

I am sure there are a lot of Bulls blogs that would cater to your sports mindset better. Leave.

If we aren't careful, the leanness we now feel will be the starvation of those we serve.

The Bulls don't scape goat players?

See “Gordon, Ben”

Things could be worse. We could have kept Boylan.
