Hinrich to Miss 1 to 2 weeks
[From the fanshots. This may get ugly. And I AM sort of bummed I won't see Hinrich-Gordon on Tuesday. -ed.]
Courtesy of Doug Thonus who got the info courtesy of Bulls.com.
This is the exact situation we signed Lindsey Hunter for. As a veteran basketball player / grief counselor; he should be able to navigate the team through the misery that is his and Pargo's play.

If he misses a week
he will miss @ Mil, Det, @ Cle, TOR. If he misses 2 weeks he will also miss NJ, @ ATL, GS, BOS and maybe the Lakers.
I love to make fun of Hinrich as much as anyone, but if the Bulls don’t sign someone decent to give them back-up guard minutes, this could get real ugly.

yup
there’s a difference between ‘Hinrich sucks!’ and someone who actually sucks.

will lindsey
ever score a point? (i don’t believe he has yet?)
the name of the team is The DIAMONDBACKS
More important
If Hunter hasn’t played a game yet, and is brought on to be a mentor…
is he, then, a higher paid coach than VDN?
before tonight: 5 games, 24 mins, 0-5, 0-4, 3 rebs (def), 3 ast, 1 to, 3pfs, PTS=0
after tonight: 6 gm, 46 mins, 2-14, 1-7, 1 off, 7 def, 5 ast, 1 stl, 1 to, 3 pf, PTS=5
it was a turnover-fest until he came in, and he had no turnovers BUT…
bulls aren’t gonna win too many if lindsey hunter has to play 22+ mins.
the name of the team is The DIAMONDBACKS
This is the price you pay when you build a roster with only 7 good players.
Does anyone know if Gar Forman/Pax is alive right now? Do they have any idea their team is now down to 6 good players?
yeah, Gar popped his head up

Again illustrates we should have either drafted a decent guard or at least signed another decent one in the offseason…but I guess Pargo and Hunter were good enough. FTO!
It also illustrates what a shitty job the Bulls front office did in building a roster this season…not only did they draft two tweeners in the first round to play behind the resurgent Deng, but they also let their leading scorer walk away for nothing, and signed two players who deserve garbage minutes at best to fill out our depth chart in the backcourt and pay Aaron Gray $1M to take up space in practice…I don’t mind the Hunter signing, as I like the idea of Rose having a mentor on the team…but they should have at the very least considered the possibility that one of their 7 legit NBA rotation players would get injured…
Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and LLE will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

The problem:
Taken out of context, any of the Bulls’ terrible (re)signings – and even the decision not to resign Gordon – can be construed as viably justifiable. However, allowing Gordon to walk and then locking-down a perfect storm of crap – not simply fill out the roster, but to provide the team with “depth” – really illuminates the absolutely rudderless shape of the team’s preparation for the 2009-10 season. It is an even more serious indictment if the explanation is total incompetence, as opposed to the immediate indifference I suspect is the culprit.
It's only a matter of time
until the Bulls start getting ripped nationally for their debacle of a front office.
The fact of the matter is this. Salmons, Deng and Hinrich all have histories of missing games due to injury. You know they’re going to get injured so hopefully you plan for it. Jerome James, Aaron Gray, and Lindsey Hunter are preparing for it if you’re a f’n moron.

Damn, I forgot about James. That's punting on 4 roster spots. Wow.
Maybe to save money next season they’ll go with 4 starters.
by hitlesswonder on Nov 30, 2009 2:02 PM CST up reply actions
hinrich's actually been healthy
with the exception of last season he’s averaged 78 games a season. salmons hasn’t missed more than a handful of games each season since 04-05 (where he only played 58). i can’t say those two are injury prone guys. obv deng is a different story.
"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"
Don't all players
have histories of missing games to injuries? Other than his injury last season Kirk has been pretty healthy.
OK I don't know shit about basketball.
by SoulEater7 on Nov. 5, 2009 9:51 PM CST
It would be one thing to waste one spot on Hunter, but wasting 3 on Hunter, Gray, and Pargo is bad
Of course, they thought Pargo could actually play apparently, which is just as stupid as punting on three roster spots. Also, if Hunter has mentored rose to his current level of performance, the Bulls need to get new mentor.
On the plus side, this should help with the full-blown crash and burn to a good draft-pick which is the only way they’ll pick up any talent.

Sad state of affairs when I'm wondering if the Bulls really needed to buy out Tim Thomas.

We really should acquire him again
just to set the all-time never going to beat it record for buyouts.

i was strongly against the Tim Thomas buyout at the time
but no one thought it was a big deal. Now Tyrus is hurt and the Bulls can’t make a 3 to save their lives. Of course, if he was still here, he’d probably would have been the opening day starter.
by Basketball Smurf on Nov 30, 2009 2:30 PM CST up reply actions
Tim Thomas is criminally underrated because he looks disinterested.
Fact is as a stretch 4, he’s pretty great. Although he kills you on the glass (probably cause he never goes inside the 3 point line on either end).

this must be a sign of how bad the Bulls are
but I really wish they had Tim Thomas. Noah and Deng could have covered up his rebounding suck and his ability to stretch the floor would have opened things up for Rose and Salmons. Ugggh. This organization is so bad I’m regretting Tim Thomas isn’t on the team!
by Basketball Smurf on Nov 30, 2009 2:37 PM CST up reply actions
The Bulls are one of the teams that actually makes for a great fit for Thomas
because they have rebounders at the SF and C spots that cover his problems there and they REALLY need shooting and he does that better than most PFs.
Incidentally, Dallas signed him and he’s been a great fit there, too. 19.8 PER in 6 games.

Should've listened to Wayne Winston!
I thought the move was a smart way to save money because they would eventually trade for Boozer, giving themselves more leeway. As usual, my optimism was crushed to a finely ground powder.

If Tim Thomas had any history of fitting into a defensive strategy
it would have been wise to keep Thomas.
We were never going to keep him. With D’Antoni he’d be great. He was even good last year when scoring mattered more.

our defense is no great shakes anyway
and the Bulls need players who still belong in the NBA on either side of the court.

I remember being angry at the time about it and people trying to shout me down
because they saved money and the thought was that Tim Thomas was so useless that they would surely spend it in a more worthwhile fashion. . . but they didn’t.

James Johnson
can probably do whatever Tim Thomas could do. He can space and jack shots too.
We just have to play him. The shortened roster means we have to play him.

by NBA Observer on Nov 30, 2009 3:06 PM CST up reply actions
I don't think so
because that’s ALL Tim Thomas did, and he knew that and stayed with it. James Johnson tries to do a lot he can’t do.
Plus he’s not proven to be a shooter compared to Thomas, unless you don’t care if the ‘jacked’ shots actually go in.

The fact that you think that Tim Thomas could be easily replaced by a rookie who's
shown no ability, yet, to make it into a thin NBA rotation is totally laughable. Tim Thomas is at least an average level NBA player, James Johnson has not shown himself capable of being that either in the future or more importantly this year.

is far better than James Johnson.

Its laughable that you think
Tim Thomas is at least average level NBA player…His career PER of 14.0 begs to differ.
Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and LLE will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.
uhhhh
you do realize that the average PER is set to 15.0 correct? 14.0 is pretty damn near average.
http://ExtendtheGame.blogspot.com
Exactly...
He is close to average, not at least average.
Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and LLE will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.
PER is not the be all end all stat. APM has consistently taken a shine to
Tim Thomas and his PER this year (which is the truly relevant inquiry since I was discussing what Thomas could provide this year relative to what Johnson could provide) is a 19.8, which is far above average. Sorry about your poor reading comprehension skills and inability to understand that no one metric totally proves a guy’s worth.

I agree that PER is not a be all end all stat...
And no one metric totally proves a guys worth. But it was a quick and easy way for me to support the position that he is not at least an average NBA player…I guess I should have stuck with the anecdotal “he sucks” argument that is popular with many around here…
Regarding his PER this season….Sample Size of 97 minutes in six games…I can’t trust that number is measuring anything accurate of his play…
Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and LLE will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.
yeah
how could he ever have gotten playing time with Rose (PER = 14.2), Miller (12.6), James Johnson (11.4), John Salmons (11.1), Taj Gibson (10.9) or Pargo (10.8) on the roster? A PER of 14.0 proves you extra suck

So... how much better would this team be with Gordon and Tim Thomas?
One more win somewhere in there? 3 or 4 over the whole season? Deng and Noah are positives but aren’t all THAT much better than what a lot of us thought. Missing Thomas and the suckage of Hinrich and Miller combined with Rose being worse (so far) this year than last is what has made this team horrible to watch.
People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett
OTOH...
if it’s a team that will sacrifice one year of megaprofits for on-court production… and it keeps Ben Gordon, Tim Thomas and drafts Chase Budinger (my choice) or Ty Lawson (Sports2’s choice) and drafts Dejuan Blair… I think this team is waaaaay better off and a 50+ win team, still…
Rose – Hinrich
Gordon – Hinrich – Budinger
Deng – Budinger – TiT
Thomas – Blair – Noah – TiT
Noah – Miller
(trading Salmons for an expiring big man or depth, if wanted)
or
Rose – Lawson
Gordon – Salmons – Rose
Deng – Thomas – TiT
Thomas – Blair – TiT
Noah – Miller
Trading Hinrich for Blake and Outlaw, say, and then Salmons for a for-sure expiring if wanted…
I don’t know why I do this to myself since it didn’t happen anyway.
People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett
i think it has less to do with what has happened so far
and more to do with what will happen over the next week or two. you’re probably right that gordon and/or tim thomas wouldn’t make the difference in getting run out of the gym at portland and la and denver, but over the next week or two milwaukee, detroit, toronto, golden state, and new jersey are all games that we need to win, and having stiffs like hunter, pargo, taj, and gray in the rotation for those games is an absolute killer.
http://ExtendtheGame.blogspot.com
along these same lines
while our 6-8 record isn’t all that bad right now, the more telltale sign of future success is point differential, and we have the 4th worst point differential in the league.
http://ExtendtheGame.blogspot.com
The good thing about all of this is...
Derrick is forced to be more assertive and take on a bigger role scoring and leading the team. Let’s see if he can do it.
VDN wont allow it.
He needs to let Rose go wild when they need to.Now that Rose seems to be his old self now. They need to run. They have the speed to do so get fast break points.I think a with a good coach that this team is a slightly above average team.I was pissed for them not getting D’Antoni. But VDN’s BEYOND retardation who sub players in at the WRONG times night after night.Taking players out like J-Sal or Rose or Deng when they are HOT!!!!! Is the dumbest crap that he calls coaching that I have seen.Mike FREAKIN Brown!!Knows NOT to take players out when they are HOT and he is retarded for putting Ben Wallace on Rashard Lewis.VDN stupidity is beyond my comprehension.
ha! yes.
though Gordon-Hinrich were going to have a duel at an undisclosed location on Tuesday.
