And Miami.

The 2009 White Sox....like a 40 degree day.

by Ozzie Montana on Nov 3, 2009 9:26 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's not true

First, that was Deng’s best ever game
well I guess besides the hot jump shooting against the killer defender Antoine Walker (that was a bigger game so that one counts more even if this one was better)….

But Deng had a great game against Miami, and he looked almost like this for that stretch in January last year in between injuries.

But WOW, yfbb, like I said last year, you’re faith in Deng might just pay off (heck I drafted him in my fantasy league despite always being a bit of a naysayer (I know he gets the stats when healthy) but I have NEVER EVER seen Deng want it like he did today, he had the heart to go with the always been there talent…..

And he played physical? What? Never would have dreamt it….

Maybe we move the fish back to the 3 and play Deng more at the 4 and uptempo the hell out of the opponents??? We can try it at least to see…I know Warrick’s not really tough enough at the 4, and Bogut’s a softie with O skills, but this was impressive either way.

Plus gotta love Noah, once Pargo came in with the spark, Noah got going/rolling.

I’m sure Jaina loved this game…

It actually was perhaps the worst NBA game I’ve seen in the Paxson era well Boylan days don’t quite count

But still we pulled it out after the worst half of bball I’ve ever seen.

Rose needs to sit and get healthy. You could see all night he was laboring. Heck that dunk at the end he barely got up. And there was that stupid Miller turnover I believe around the top of the key that Delfino grabbed with Rose not far behind, and Rose couldn’t catch him….he’s too slow right now, and Kirk right now is far better than a hurt Rose…..

Why risk further injury? It’s stupid….

I did like that Vinny right away said that the team has to up the tempo and find a way to up the tempo, that’s what I was thinking, that’s what Kendall said, and right off the bat, that was Vinny’s first words….

Still he needs to figure out a way to do it an dget Salmons to play in the flow rather than have Salmons try to be BG out there—he ain’t BG….

This is one of those games where the Pargo sighting was necessary

This is the game where we need him. Pargo did this for New Orleans and us even in the playoffs.

I just hope Vinny doesn’t rely on Pargo when others have it going, but when nothing is going, you put Pargo in and hope his streakiness is on, because he attacks and is relentless and if hitting shots can put up pts faster than BG.

The issue is if VDN like Byron Scott before him try to overplay Pargo he’ll show the warts, because when he’s off he still jacks up a million shots at lightening pace and kills the team further.

I was wondering why Pargo wasn’t given a bit of time in the 2nd quarter…glad Vinny thought about him eventually.

I hope this game reminds the Bulls why Taj wasn’t a lottery pick. Ease Gibson in and he’ll be ok, but we can’t rely on him just yet…..as a bit minute guy. Gibson has some upside that Gray never had, but overplaying Gibson will make me soon hate him more than I hate the big marshmallow…

From Luol, of course

Jannero Pargo = Larry Hughes 2.0

by bull83 on Nov 3, 2009 9:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Pargo is not close to Larry 2.0

Pargo is a chucker, but he’s asked to be a chucker because he’s quick and aggressive and that’s the only way he is in the league.

Larry’s a chucker because he takes shots and kills plays….

Pargo is supposed to go out there to create to give a spark to a team when nothing’s going.

Larry takes it upon himself to take shots when things are going right for the team just to break the offense in the hope that he might hit some shots and help his stats….

I dont think Pargo has a care about stats, and I think Scott Skiles, Byron Scott and now hopefully Vinny will continue to use him as the guy to use only when things break down and nothing’s going….put Pargo in to see if he’s hot for the spark.

Larry breaks the offense to try to force his stats.

Pargo is asked to just run hog wild to see if he can get somethin going after teams try to run offenses for a while with nothing working…

Its a big difference….add in too that Larry Hughes was a freakish talent who was such an idiot that he ruined his career. Pargo never should be a more than 10-15 minute every few games player….

Thurston Moore is a rock god

by majoyenrac on Nov 4, 2009 12:14 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Really big difference.

Hughes makes enough money people feel like they have to get use out of him. Hopefully Pargo can be sat and forgot about in most games.

by cranscape on Nov 4, 2009 12:18 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Pargo takes kill plays too

Just because he had a good game, I’m not going to say that he’s great. Pargo takes wild shots and misses a lot. Especially when he wants to do more than he knows. Against Miami, when he missed a layup, everyone was criticizing him and calling him names. Now that he had a nice game, he’s good again. C’mon! Hughes won the game against Utah last year and after that he continued to suck. With Pargo, who plays only for himself, will be the same thing. Wait for the next games and you will see.

Jannero Pargo = Larry Hughes 2.0

by bull83 on Nov 4, 2009 6:41 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I've never said he's good or bad

I’m saying Pargo fits that nothing else is going, give him a chance game.

He’s not asked typically in his career to come out there and play a set offense game, he’s asked to come out and go wild to see if he can either hit or get the other guys to follow the energy….

That’s what he’s always been. He’ll have far more games of being off than on especially if he plays a lot. But if his usage is kept down, he can be very effective, especially on a team that’s rather devoid of offensive talents.

Hughes on the other hand like you mentioned gets paid a ton, but also wants to start (and well has or had the talent to start—far more talented than Pargo) but Hughes will play more minutes and break plays intentionally just to force his game and hope to be the savior.

Pargo rarely plays in sets….

If we run we can beat the Cavs rather easily, but if we get caught in any half court stretches, they’ll totally outpower us….

you come out trying to dominate and they bait you into fouls. Kwame Brown is actually half decent at baiting guys into fouls. Dwight can rely on his power a little too much, he doesn’t have to ability to hold back like LeBron does. Just another way DH is similar to Shaw, I guess.

…but if he can play as well and with as much energy as he did tonight then I can live with that. Let me say again, Deng played the best game I have EVER seen him play and if I’m gonna bad mouth him when he plays like shit then I gotta give him glowing praise when he plays well. Deng did the damn thang tonight!!

Now we need him to remain consistent and put out this sort of effort and energy every night and not just against teams like the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Miller pass to Rose was brutal defense by Jennings, he was neither contesting Miller nor anywhere near his man, and it’s not like Warrick (or Bogut, forgot which) wasn’t right in front of Miller.

Jennings looks fine, but there’s plenty of other guys that are looking good too. Lawson comes to mind, as does Blair and both were picked later than Jennings. The dedicated thread to Jennings might have been timely, but I think it was a bit too unrealistic.

Jennings had Rose blow by him several times

despite Rose’s rust and sore ankle.

Lawson has the luxury of playing behind Chauncey Billups.

I said before and I’ll say again. You CANNOT compare being the #1 guy to being a supporting player or backup. Jennings has already become the focal point of opposing teams playing Milwaukee. It’s very different from being the PG and having Billups and Carmelo Anthony on the court with you. I’d venture to say those two guys are a lot more feared than Hakim Warrick, Charlie Bell and Andrew Bogut. No need to double either of those three where you may have to send 2 defenders at Billups or Anthony at any given time leaving plenty of operating room for Lawson.

Now Lawson is tough and will be a hell of an NBA player. I love his game and his toughness. But he’s setup for success where he is. Jennings has been thrown in the deep end of the pool and must either sink or swim. He’s swimming so far and doing a great job of doing so as a rookie PG playing hefty minutes.

You perfectionists kill me!

Y’all act like nobody will ever get beat defensively and that everybody should be great at all facets of the game upon entering the league. Guys learn to play the game and Jennings will too…and so will Derrick Rose.

You are the type of guys who would have given up on Steve Nash and Chauncey Billups because neither really flourished until later in their careers…and now they have been 2 of the 3 best PGs in the league over the last 6 or 7 years along with Jason Kidd (Paul and Williams haven’t been around 6 or 7 yrs and that’s why I don’t include them in here).

Milwaukee is a terrible team

We cannot shoot at all. Salmons struggles and kills ball movement in the process. Even if Derrick is 100% (which he’s not), our inability to space the floor will make it near impossible to get in the lane. That said, I didn’t understand why VDN refused to run high screen rolls for Derrick until the end, but did it with Kirk and MIller nearly all of the game. Derrick still has the ball out of his hands way too much in this offense. Jennings overdribbled, but he’s going to be the guy to get the other guys their shots. Same with Nash. Ball movement and side to side is important, but the only guy who can get others easy baskets is Rose. Someone might want to mention it to VDN.

At least the 3 quarters of terrible basketball wasn’t Tyrus’ fault. I was hoping for an end of game interview with Coach Hunter to discuss Monday’s teachable moment.

having taj rather than tyrus in the middle makes a huge difference. Energy, shot blocking/presence, rebounding, dunks.

I agree Gene, nice post.

Deng did have good game too, but I liked the announcers saying “Deng has kept us in this with his 15 pts” when he was only like 4-15 shooting at that point. It’s like those 30 point games for Kobe when he goes 11-34, good game indeed.

What I really liked about Deng today was his aggressiveness. He stole us at least a few offensive boards for put backs and that was really encouraging. It’s great to see him playing aggressively, I hope he keeps that up and minimizes the outside catch and shoot shots with a hand in his face.

Detroit 96-85. They’re not as bad as they were thought to be. Coming back from 18 down against any team is big.

I thought they’d win coming in but some of their players seemed to implode. Charlie Bell-Ukic I think always makes bad decisions. And Warrick is always like that too just the other day his bad shots went in I suppose.

Only the debbie downers on this blog

get disappointed with wins. The best team i’ve ever seen was 72-10. It didn’t matter that they were clearly better than every team they played, they still lost about 1 in every 8 games.

Nothing is given to you, and as I pointed out the Bucks did just beat Detroit by 11 so they’re not as crappy as you make it seem. A win is a good thing, no matter how hard you try to twist it.

Oh I see,

you’re trying to be snarky in lieu of having a real debate. No idea what BG’s contract has to do with anything other than you think it’s clever.

Detroit’s a decent team and Milwaukee beat them. Detroit just beat the Magic by the way.

Who else would the Bulls be compared to? Detroit is a divison rival who will be fighting for the same playoff spot as the Bulls. I can’t think of a better team to compare them to.

Your assertion that beating the Bucks is meaningless, since the Bulls could have lost to the Bucks as another decent team just did.

by runningman on Nov 3, 2009 10:49 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Detroit isn't a good team at all.

They have a few good guards where all of their production comes from, a stagnant Prince who people are getting frustrated with, and very little from their front court besides Wallace who probably will slow down as the season goes on. The Magic got raped by the refs tonight. It was a really bizarre game. I doubt the Pistons think all of their problems are solved after squeaking by.

We went into the season comparing ourselves to Miami. And now we are struggling with the Bucks. That isn’t a good sign. With this level of play we’ll struggle against anyone but the Kings. That is going to make for a very long season. Good teams need to be able to breeze past their inferiors. It helps air the bench out and give guys like JJ some experience without it being a big risk to the W/L.

When was the last time you watched the Lakers or Celtics take that approach?

They don’t.. they know their time is limited. You come to the game and get better as a team. You don’t jog down the court and loaf your way to wins.

Matt is right.. this team doesn’t get it and they’re not that good to take nights off.

by SoulEater7 on Nov 3, 2009 10:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

What approach?

The one that beating every team is important? I see them do it all season.

In what twisted world is coming back from 18 points down, “taking a night off”. Taking a night off would have been giving up when you’re 18 down. The only one who took the night off was Tyrus.

by runningman on Nov 3, 2009 10:52 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

how about not taking the first half off?

How about blowing out a team and letting your bench guys get some time? How about treating it like practice. Yes it’s nice they came back and beat them but they are BAD.

You don’t get better playing like that. It’s kinda like excepting mediocrity.

I WANT BLOOD THIRSTY SAVAGES! I want NBA titles! Why i that so bad?

by SoulEater7 on Nov 3, 2009 10:59 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know if a lack of effort had anything to do with the first half

But a lack of shooting definitely did. This is an average/mediocre team at best; when they shoot 27 percent in a half this is what you get. Unfortunately, they lost their best scorer and shooter in the offseason, so they may have many bad shooting nights this season.

by SoulEater7 on Nov 3, 2009 11:09 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

See when a good team plays a bad team the good team beats you down by 30.

When a mediocre team beats a bad team you get tonight…. just enough to win. Not getting any better and not playing crisp basketball. Good teams look at this as practice and mediocre teams take this as work.

by SoulEater7 on Nov 3, 2009 10:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Plusses

Deng was actually good. And he’s been that way a lot so far. He’s been better than I expected. Rose had a decent 4th quarter and played with aggressiveness and intensity.

More than caring about wins and losses, I think I want Noah, Deng, and Rose to be good because they are future. So, from that standpoint tonight was a tolerable game.

On the downside, Salmons has been awful shooting and on D. And Kirk seems like he’s shooting poorly as well. One of those guys needs to be able to hit 3s or we’ll be seeing Pargo way too much.

Eh, at least they came back.

Getting blown out by 20 at home would have been exponentially worse.

Yes, the team isn’t very good. Their fabled depth isn’t that fantastic considering how crappy Gibson looks at times (I thought he was supposed to be “consistent.”) Still, nice to see Deng have a great game when his health is still a concern.

Bulls escape/win 83 - 81 | The 'Fire Vinny' watch goes on hold...for now

So I guess Luol Deng found his dog, bought a dog, engaged some illegal dog fighting, or whatever cause he was beasting tonight with 24 points a career high 20 boards!

This game did not look good early. The Bulls came out shooting 28 % and had only 29 point at half time. But guess who came off the bench and really lit a spark? That’s right, Jannero Pargo did his poor man’s Ben Gordon impersonation and had 10 points in 13 minutes. Sure it helped that the Bucks brought a 3rd quarter lineup featuring Luke Ridnour as their best player and went ice cold. The Bucks had no choice because Brandon Jennings was seriously sucking wind towards the end of the game.

I’m pretty sure it was because of the fact that Jennings was spent that the Bucks were determined to shoot a 3 to end the game and avoid over time. They were so determined that they designed a play for Ersan Ilyasova who’s shot was as off as that goody looking mask he had on. Speaking of "Young Money", Brandon was terrific tonight. Hitting all kinds of big shots and fancy behind the back passes in transition. He even gave Rose all kinds of problems, forcing 5 TOs. Luckily Rose came through with a huge block late on Brandon, bringing back memories of last season’s playoff block on Rondo. Still, Rose should be a better ball handler then what he’s shown against Chalmers and Jennings.

Some other unsung heroes, Miler did his old crafty YMCA veteran pump fake and drive move, which seems slower then molasses in January but somehow gets away with it. He’s a very solid spot up shooter and teams have to respect his shot. Noah had a very nice defensive game with 12 boards and 5 blocks. Still, he only contributed 4 points and Bogut had his post game going against Noah with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

The two Bulls players that really struggled tonight were John Salmons and Taj Gibson. Gibson has no business starting an NBA game. Right now, whether it’s Tyrus’s fault or it’s a case of Vinny being a douche, Tyrus has to out there, at least till the Bulls get a capable replacement for Thomas.

Bulls will take the win, but obviously have some things that they need to work on. The Bulls will have tomorrow off to prepare for the Cavs. It’s a road game and the Cavs look to be righting their ship after a shaky start, so I have no delusions of winning. We’ll see if Tyrus is back in the lineup as well.

I'll only take notice of Deng when he does this against say.. Cleveland or

Boston when he has to guard someone or plays a team that boxes out. This I don’t take stock in. Big deal he played well against NBA fodder. Show me this in prime time and I will jump on the Luol Deng bandwagon but this doesn’t do anything for me other than tell me at least he is healthy.

by SoulEater7 on Nov 3, 2009 10:41 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I hear you Soul. I feel you on the Milwaukee thing.

You know I’m a NOTORIOUS Deng basher!!! But we gotta give him credit when he plays well. Because if he had gone out here against Milwaukee and scored 6 pts we’d be killing him right now. As it stands, that could be the best game he’s played as a pro. Now it wasn’t against LeBron or Carmelo, but Mbah a Moute is a solid defender and Deng played with an energy I haven’t seen from him since…..THE MIAMI SERIES (I hate bringing that up). If he can keep this level of activity up then I think he’ll do a damn decent job. But there is no room for slippage from him. He is just as capable of getting lit up big if he’s not engaged in the game.

by lexdiamonds0730 on Nov 3, 2009 10:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

OK

If this was his second year I would baby his ass and give him all the praise in the world. But he has to do it when it counts and thats all there is to it. Or else it doesn’t mean a damn thing. Do it when the bright lights are on.

When he does it against real team I’ll jump on the Luol Deng love boat. I don’t trust him yet.

Only the Boston and Cleveland games count for some reason.

Someone should tell the NBA so they can dramatically shorten the season.

by runningman on Nov 3, 2009 11:09 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

no.. don't misconstrue what I'm saying.

All I’m saying is show that shit on the big stage and I’ll by into Luol Deng. He has a history of shrinkage when it counts. And don’t give the 06 Miami series because I’ll give you the 06 Pistons series.

by SoulEater7 on Nov 3, 2009 11:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think that's what he's saying.

What he’s saying is that it’s fine and dandy to have big games against the Milwaukee Bucks of the world, but do it when the spotlight is on. If he manages to play those type of games against the Bostons and Clevelands then that dramatically changes the face of the Bulls. The Bulls are closer to competing if Deng can play that way against the big boys consistently.

This game showed us all that Deng has possessed all-star traits but it just doesn’t seem to manifest itself at the biggest of moments. Let me take Derrick Rose for instance. You could have not even noticed he was on the court for 3 quarters, but you sure as hell knew he was out there down the stretch. Rose is a factor when it matters…at least most nights. I’m gonna go here…Ben Gordon is a factor when it matters. Deng played his ass off last night and that cannot be disputed. What Soul and others want to see now is more of that same type of effort against EVERYBODY and not just against teams that quite honestly probably aren’t as good as the Bulls. He wants to see Deng return the favor when Pierce, Carmelo, Durant, Granger, LeBron, etc…. come to Chicago and dish out a ho-hum 25 and 9 on the Bulls because that’s what they do most nights anyway. He wants these big performances from Deng to be ho-hum…and so do I.

Hopefully all this game will look like to us in a few months is a W on a stat sheet.

And hopefully the Bulls will stop mimicking the Bears. I’d love it if we could just beat a bad team and look good doing it instead of this dysfunctional mess that’s hard to feel good about.

anyone find it ironic

rose is normally stellar on offense, and barely decent on defense….normally

but in clutch time, he somehow coughs up the ball (i hear he got tangled with bogut and i heard the game on the radio so im unsure how it looked but still…) but on the defensive end gets (another) huge defensive play (block) that pretty much is the main reason we won the game….i dont htink ive ever heard of a player change his strenghts to his weakness and his weakness to his strength in the clutch…its just unique…but i sort of like that…

Rose has been sloppier than usual in the first few games with the ball.

I know Rondo is a good defender, but he almost lost a few in that game that could be attributed to nothing other than carelessness. Today was the same.

I wish I had a better angle (or that they showed a replay once in awhile, what’s up with lack of replays in this game?) on that early 1st quarter pass to Salmons that went out of bounds. I know it hit Salmons’ hands or whatever, but it looked like the defender was all over Salmons and you don’t need to make that pass to a guy that is not open on the sideline 5 feet beyond the arch.

Maybe Tyrus really was sick

http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2009/11/thomas-sick-not-at-bulls-game.html

Thomas arrived at the Berto Center Tuesday morning but was sent home by team personnel when he registered a fever. Team officials said he had a sore throat that was red as well. Thomas saw the Bulls’ team physician Tuesday afternoon.

Will John Jackson and all the people implying that he was faking it be apologizing now? Or was the Bulls’ team physician in on Tyrus’s plan as well?

jeez that was tough to watch

just finished on the DVR. wow was that first half hard to watch. i was thinking 15 wins, tops. either that, or they spent the off day on South Beach.

i hate Vinny’s sub patterns. usually coaches play their starters/ best players a good 10 minutes to start the game if not the whole 1st quarter, bench them til maybe 7 or 6 minutes to finish out the half. repeat in the second. Del Coacho brings Rose in and out during the first half and doesn’t even have Rose out there to finish the half when everyone knows you gotta finish quarters and halfs strong. fine, we won. sure, Rose is gimpy so monitor his minutes, but man i hate his sub patterns.
