Lakers owner Jerry Buss says he's prepared to spend as much as he needs in order to contend in the future.
This season, the Lakers have a $91.3 million payroll. In addition to that, Buss will have to pay $21.4 million in luxury tax for going over the NBA's threshold.
Buss told NBA.com that he is willing to give Kobe Bryant a three-year, $91 million extension and that he wants coach Phil Jackson to return next season

Can we make a owner trade? Jerry R. for Jerry B.?

The Bulls just want to be the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Get a bunch of cheap, cheap, cheap good players on their rookie deals and luck into a superduperstar (Sorry Derrick!). And then still be profitable. Problem is, they aren’t willing to pay the price of absolutely sucking for a few years to actually do that.
Thunder might be my new favorite team. They are loaded with young talent. At least they are upfront about being cheap bastards so that I don’t have to expect that all of Jeff Green, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook will all be extended. Of course, if they are, it would be a wonderfully pleasant surprise.
Seriously, though, if they keep everyone, a future lineup of:
Westbrook – Sherron Collins
Harden – Sefolosha
Durant – Sefolosha
Green – Serge Ibaka
Kristic – Dexter Pittman
might be pretty damn good.
Mer.
I hate myself.

It's hard picking a new team.
Can’t fuck up.

meh, I assume once you ditch one team
it’s easier each successive time.

"they aren’t willing to pay the price of absolutely sucking for a few years to actually do that."
that’s a big issue. The Bulls profit model involves them being average enough to sell out every game. They were able to be terrible once on a post-Jordan high of ‘99-’03, but I don’t think it could work again.
So I never considered that an option, and I don’t think that’s a good way to go anyway. The Thunder just did it because they wanted to create fan apathy and leave Seattle. One of their owners is liquidating (literally?) his prized wine collections for cash, I don’t consider them a model franchise.
But the Bulls need to be absolutely luck-struck this offseason, and it’s a very slim chance. That’s their ‘plan’, which isn’t a plan at all.

I don't think it's a good plan, either.
The best is to win and be aggressive in your moves. However, if you’re not going to take risky moves to be a really good team, then losing is the best way to get a chance to get excellent talent on the cheap. It’s certainly not guaranteed. It hasn’t worked for the Clippers. And I agree that I don’t think that was Seattle/OKC’s plan all along. They screwed it up a few times, taking random 7-footers, what, 10 years in a row. Then they got lucky when they were really bad, getting Durant. But they also had two good players they got value out of through trades instead of just letting them walk.
They were smart in getting Seflosha and smart in getting Kristic. Both are good, cheap players that will be good complementary pieces to the guys they already have.

OKC=Portland with cheaper owners.
So the Bulls=Thunder with an even cheaper owner?

and worse talent evaluators.
1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box

Maybe there's another RC Buford protege lying around.
