Just thinking out loud as we scour the East: Shouldn't Chicago at least be looking into Iverson? Ben Gordon's scoring has been sorely missed, John Salmons hasn't been able to recapture last season's second-half mojo and the Bulls, although very close to the luxury-tax line, have two open roster spots and would not go over the tax line if they signed Iverson to a prorated veteran minimum deal. We repeat: Just thinking out loud.

What happened to the Da Bulls?

by Belize on Nov 27, 2009 4:09 PM CST reply actions

I've done a complete 180 on this

The Bulls need another player who can penetrate the defense, score and/or pass. Right now, Rose and Salmons are the only guys on this team who can penetrate and score. Rose is the only player who can both score and pass off the dribble. Iverson adds both. He also can get to the line, which the Bulls desperately need.

Rose 36 / Hinrich 12
Iverson 30 / Salmons 12 / Hinrich 6
Deng 30 / Salmons 18
Tyrus 36 / Deng 8 / Noah 4
Noah 34 / Miller 14

The Bulls should just run, run, run. And when they get caught in the halfcourt, Rose and Iverson can take turn running pick and rolls.

i dont like that dengs minutes would drop in this case.

read closer

he’d still get 38 minutes a game

by Basketball Smurf on Nov 27, 2009 6:45 PM CST up reply actions

I don't like him at power forward

but at the moment, he and Taj are indistinguishable at the position and Miller has been one of the Bulls worst players. So we may lack better options.

Also, one of the reasons I don’t like to go small is because without Gordon, the Bulls don’t really have the players to take advantage of it. Its not like the Bulls have a wealth of perimeter talent they need to get on the floor. If you go small with Hinrich and Pargo, you get smaller but gain nothing. But with Iverson, the Bulls could once again have a guard who might actually take advantage of having the floor spread for him.

by Basketball Smurf on Nov 27, 2009 7:39 PM CST up reply actions

sure, but isnt the problem with the bulls going small that the floor is not

spread at all.

"Oooohhh, cat in the wall, eh? Now you're talkin' my language."

by TheMoon on Nov 28, 2009 12:31 AM CST up reply actions

well, yeah

but that doesn’t change the fact that Deng at power forward right now is a better bet than Taj. If Taj was giving the Bulls any sort of rebounding or defense I’d be all for letting him get minutes. But as long as he continues to play this poorly, I’d rather see Deng. Maybe JJ.

This is all hypothetical though. I don’t think the Bulls would ever consider picking up Allen Iverson. I just feel like the Bulls are on very dangerous ground here. They are a defensive team that is not very good at defense and a very poor offensive team. Iverson can score. In Iverson’s final season in Denver, Mr. Inefficient posted a higher PER than any current Bulls player (20.9). I think, as a one year rental he can help. And at the very least, he will make this team watchable.

Maybe i’m overreacting. But without Ty Thomas, this team looks very bad. We need someone who can make an impact on offense. If we are counting on Thomas to do that, we are in trouble.

by Basketball Smurf on Nov 28, 2009 12:42 AM CST up reply actions

actually im sure its too late to make a difference, but i would sort of like to see

the bulls ask tyrus to be a huge part of their offense. i say this because tyrus does see himself as a very good player i think and, unlike rose, has no qualms about being “me-first,” which is a good trait to have (seriously). if they want to do that- and i think maybe they should- obviously AI would be a bad fit.

"Oooohhh, cat in the wall, eh? Now you're talkin' my language."

by TheMoon on Nov 28, 2009 5:22 PM CST up reply actions

I'd love that as well

though preseason it seemed they demurred from giving Tyrus more responsibility and instead took the first opportunity to declare his spot tenuous and Taj-worthy.

They probably thought they had weapons to make their PF more of a ‘glue’ (or whatever) guy, and have since been proven incorrect. At least Tyrus will draw a foul.

I've thought this for two years ago.

I convinced myself that the only way I’d be okay with letting Gordon go is if they made Thomas the No. 2 scoring option behind Rose. I don’t know if he’d live up to the potential (it’s obviously unlikely), but it’s the best option to have any semblance of a good team. If he succeeds, you have yourself two budding superstars—which I thought was the whole point of getting him in the first place.

People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett

I've done a 180 too

Never been much of an Iverson fan (though oddly it seems I always tended to go to the Philly Bulls games and Denver Bulls game(s), I’ve probably seen AI live at least 10-12 times, which is far more than anyone else (Vince Carter, Jason Kidd and the Nets are the next closest)….

But anyway, we NEED A.I’s talents, and all the b.s. that he’ll hurt us is b.s.. I can see the Bulls brass not bringing him in (they don’t want another 2003-2004 Pippen to pay AI to leave like the Pistons and Grizz just did), but he can start here, and well….it might not be a bad thing at all, take some pressure off of Rose for a bit and give us a punch for our worst in the league offense….

I was anti it just because I’ve never been a big fan, but A.I. will compete, and we need that big time.

Sadly....through thick and thin....

Could Iverson help the Bulls win? Probably

But would Iverson help the Bulls develop? Nope.

If Iverson publicly clashed with a well-respected (at the time, at least) coach like Larry Brown, just imagine what would happen with VDN…

wait, change my vote

PERFECT POINT

Exactly…A.I. should help us to stop losing (getting blown out). Getting blown out for 4 straight games, I think is already getting to this club….and it’s so freaking early. We should be finding a rythym, instead, we’re getting into the gutter….

I know there are injuries, but this team isn’t constructed well enough to withstand that at all, and A.I. and Rose could give us a glimpse of what we might want to see with Wade and Rose (will two scoring quick guards work (course Wade’s better than AI ever was in my book, and obviously better than A.I. today—I know A.I’s got an MVP and all, and was really good, but Wade’s just been more all around and forced less shots—or drawn more fouls that is, taken less risks defensively and been better defensively and is probably the closest MJ clone we’ve yet seen, yet because he’s rather quiet doesn’t get that rep quiet like he should (he ain’t a clear #3 in the league)…

Oh well, Wade fan here….

Sadly....through thick and thin....

by majoyenrac on Nov 29, 2009 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

I'd take him, and I don't care if he snaps Vinny's neck, so as long

as in the process he gives over a little of his selfishness and desire to Rose. If he helps transform Rose I’d give him as much as he wants to play out the year.

Metal sharpens metal.

And this guy right here understands and knows what leadership is all about: The coach, the hall of famer......... Dick Butka! George Ryan

The Bulls shrink like a dick in cold water.

i wonder

why rose didn’t pick that up from BG last year…as much as AI gets called for hogging the ball IMO, he passes the rock more than BG. I wonder if Rose already got comfortable last year with BG in having a faithful SG

John Salmons hasn’t been able to recapture last season’s second-half mojo

Did he have to say that out loud?

well if Hinrich's hurt for a while, they'll need some guard

maybe Antonio Daniels or something.

There’s no point in signing Iverson. They’re not trying to do anything this year. They were likely figuring they’d start in the hole anyway, and technically they’re correct in believing that losing by 20 or 5 to teams they’re worse than won’t matter in April, when we’re surging towards .500 and the 8th seed and all is right again.

Get with the franchise plan: mediocrity now, hope something falls in our lap later, maybe spend on that after.

I am still holding out hope for...

Rashad McCants…at least he has some upside in his career.

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and LLE will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

by Dionysus2.0 on Nov 28, 2009 9:41 AM CST up reply actions

eesh...

there’s a reason no one has signed McCants — it’s not because they can’t, it’s because they don’t want to.

has there been any indication Iverson would actually sign for the minimum?

If the Bulls front office stops for a second and actually think about what's good for the team instead of how to save more money

We wouldn’t have Lindsey Hunter and Pargo as our back up guards right now.
It looks as if they honestly don’t care if we tank this season or not, actually they might prefer if we missed playoffs so that they get a higher draft pick.

At this point, I’d rather have McCants…at least he has 3pt range. We need more shooters not penetrators. AI is gonna run into the same packed lane Derrick is seeing…we need more dead-eye shooters which is why I don’t see the point in AI….he can’t shoot 3s
