Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

"..... Johnson, appears destined to leave for free agency this summer. Sources close to him insist it’s unlikely he’ll stay with the Hawks, especially considering the possibility he could be the league’s biggest star on the move. As long as Wade stays in Miami, Johnson could take a max contract to slide into the Bulls’ backcourt with Derrick Rose(notes)."

Why wouldn't he resign with Atlanta?

They’re…good.

Do they not have enough cap space?

Good question as usual from MPG

The article implies that Atlanta will not pay a maximum salary. According to HoopsHype Atlanta is committed to $47,630,214 for 2010-11 and the Bulls only $37,669,826. Much easier for the Bulls to make a big offer without a huge financial hit. If true – - Ttis is the best news for Thanksgiving!!

I think Horford's contract is up soon.

So thats where whatever money they have goes

Joe johnson is awesome, but horford is a young big man with alot of game….

And I think he may have played

with a certain member of our frontcourt in the past…and that team might have been decent.

Just thinking out loud...

If it comes down to either Horford or Johnson…I would want Horford…and the Hawks have two potential Johnson replacements in Crawford and Childress…

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and LLE will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

Probably because Johnson is selfish

Especially since he blasted his teamates a week or so ago for not “knowing their roles on the team”. The word is he wasn’t to pleased to see Jamal Crawford and some of the others taking so many shots in the game the Hawks lost to Charlotte. Jamal Crawford has been a great addition to the Hawks getting buckets as the 6th man and helping making the Hawks a overall better team that could be dangerous playoff time. However “Selfish” Joe J. doesn’t see it that way. I was never really impressed with Joe since he was in Arkansas. He’s a big guard with a good shot, but he’s not athletic he doesn’t defend particularly well. I feel he’s just a one dimensional player. I’d rather the Bulls go for Rudy Gay myself. He’s younger, more athletic, he can shoot, defend, he doesn’t appear to be a selfish, bad mannered cat, and I think him with Rose, Noah, Deng give the Bulls a solid group. If Tyrus stays they’ll be dynamite, but I really don’t believe Tyrus will stay, and this decision I think was made last year. Anyways, I want Gay, forget Johnson, forget anyone else not named Wade, Stoudemire, Bosh or Tyrus.

by Mr Rhythm on Nov 26, 2009 4:28 PM CST reply actions

Rudy Gay pretty much never passes, whereas JJ has proven to be a great passer and is often a facilitator in the Hawks' offense.

I have no idea where some of your analysis is coming from, but it’s way off. If anything, Rudy Gay is the selfish one compared to Joe Johnson.

Ill take that consolation prize

If this is a real possibility, i would implore the bulls to move hinrich (hey hes still my favorite player in the league, but joe johnson is not just a clear upgrade but also one of my favorite players in the league after hinrich) Then i would want to pull off that boozer/korver trade i keep envisioning….

With boozer on our team this year we can do a bunch of things, stay competetive for one, we get to see first hand how good boozer is on this team, we get to see how an actual post presence works on this team, and we can possibly entice other pfs in free agency next year (after they see whatever success we have with boozer) and if boozer turns out to be a good fit, we could always resign him (he might go for less depending on how his situation here works out).

Oh man now im anxious…

I woud disagree.

Hes a FAR better ballhandler and passer. They are comparable as scorers and deffenders, with JJ still better at both. Although I do agree that a Max conrtact to Johnson at 29 is not what makes us a contender, and if thats what we get out of 2010, I dont think anyone will catch me cheering about it thats forsure. My only point is that hes not “barely” better, hes simply the better player hands down.

by TruEChiFaN... on Nov 27, 2009 1:17 PM CST up reply actions

Johnson is much better...

With a more diverse skill set than BG…he deserves more money.

I'd rather have the former

Johnson’s better, and a better fit, so he should get more money. Though not exactly worth it given the risk involved. Plus we’re punting Tyrus in this scenario too.

Though with Johnson at max and Deng at $12m, and Noah and Rose’s rookie deals set to be up (always think ahead!), they still need more and wouldn’t go into the tax to do so.

Because no one cares

My top 5 players list:

Kirk hinrich
Brandon Roy
Joe Johnson
Rudy Fernandez
Gerald Wallace

heh sorry

I like brandon roys game, he attacks the rim and though he has tremendous length he isnt all that athletic (fast, quick, explosive) but is deceptive and smart. He is also extremely well mannered a leader and a willing passer, but who also knows when to take over and be clutch…

Joe Johnson i like because he is one of the few great scoring sgs who also happens to be equally good on the defensive end, theres very few of those now days. He is also a willing passer, and ultimately is the prototypical sg in the league.

Rudy Fernandez i like because he is one of those players that decieves you in looks and demeanor. He has that euro hard worker vibe to him, and just has tons of hustle, is an incredible shooter, but then also has the ability to fly over the rim. He is a player that is smart and sudden and just really fun to watch play.

Gerald Wallace ive liked because of his total devotion to being fearless and the effort he puts into the game. He is an incredible athlete, with great defensive awareness, and is one of the few players you can never tell to try harder, cuz the guy literally puts his entire body on the line. Whether it be a dunk, a block or a steal, he just isnt afraid to go all out and its something to admire….and fear.

Im intrested in what yours (or anyones) would be…

Joe Johnson would be a good fit

put we still need a big man who can score the ball. If not we are a long way from contending for a ring. Noah or Tyrus will have to be shipped and I prefer it be Tyrus.

This isn't even a story.

Wojo only said that Johnson would fit with Rose if he were to come to the Bulls, not that he has heard from a source that Johnson is looking at the Bulls as one of his preferred teams. What’s more, it sounds like Johnson would rather be in Miami than any other city.

Basically, all that Wojo broke is that he may leave Atlanta, especially if they don’t have max-contract type of cash.

Didn’t we know that already?

PS: The title of this shot is extremely misleading. It should be changed.

Even if joe johnson has only made up his mind to leave atlanta

its still a good thing…im waiting to hear confirmation that bosh IS leaving Toronto, Wade IS leaving Miami, and Amare IS leaving pheonix….

I dont care if they dont say they want to play for the bulls, so long as they also dont show a prefernce for any other team…I want these players to be greedy in the offseason, because we arent a prestigious franchise anymore, we arent winning, we arent well run…the only thing our team can offer is money, and a large market

Did Woj say he made up his mind?
Sources close to him insist it’s unlikely he’ll stay with the Hawks

One outside linebacker in Chicago once insisted he’d never take a snap for the Bears ever again. He’s now the defensive captain, I think. I’m talking about Lance Briggs, in case anyone doesn’t know. This talk could very well be posturing by Joe Johnson’s camp.

I’m just saying that this story has a lot more sizzle than it does steak. I’d love to have Joe Johnson on the Bulls, but seeing cooked up stories like this bother me as I think it unnecessarily excites certain fan bases.

OK I'm still dreaming but if we luck out here is how we could get JJ and another free agent.

If Atlanta knows they are losing JJ, then I would think Atlanta would consider a sign and trade. If we give up Hinrich for JJ we still could sign someone starting at about $9 million. Here is my logic. I am not a salary cap expert and assume the blog salary experts will help me. Assuming the cap is $55 million and the max you can offer JJ is 16.5 million . If we get lucky and Salmons opts out then we are obligated to $31.8 million. In additon to JJ we go after David Lee and give Tryus the qualifying offer? We also could use the mid-cap exemption. I am hoping Reinsdorf would be willing to pay the luxury tax. I will let the salary cap experts help me. We then would have

   J Johnson
   D Rose
   J Noah
   D Lee
   L Deng
with T Thomas coming off the bench

I would be happy.

Can Joe Johnson be the best player on a championship team?

Can Derrick be the second best player on a championship team?

The answer to both of those questions could very likely be no, meaning this team needs a lot more help than just one big time free agent. We need a real coach, another 2nd or 3rd tier player and new management. I’m afraid we need more than 2010 free agency.

Thats always the question

- One of your points is a no brainer. With all the uncertain talk about which player is coming to the Bulls next summer…. the one certain thing is Vinny will be gone. I dont see a situation where if they are serious bringing in a max player they will have Vinny coach him. I think when they bring in a new coach with the new team next summer…. when looking back at 2008-2010; saving money having Vinny coach a team that had no chance to get to a finals wasnt a bad idea.

- Its just real hard to win an NBA championship because only a certain group of players every decade have a chance. Think about this, since 1989 Detriot, Chicago, Houstan, Chicago, San Antonio, and LA have all won muliple Championships thanks to Issiah, Shaq, Kobe, Tim, MJ/Scottie, and Hakeem. Only the Pistons in 04, Miami 06, and Boston 08( They may get multiple Champs this year) – have won championships outside of those dynasties during a 20 year period.

- So will Joe Johnson or Derrick add their name to multiple Championship dynasties… probably not. However, there is no reason not to collect as much talent as possible and try the Detriot model of getting the conference finals 7 years in a row in hope of breaking through that one year. Or how about the Boston model… Having Derrick and Joe Johnson in place… then down the road who knows a ( Blake Griffin or Pau Gasol type) gets pissed off at his organization and demands a trade to the Bulls finally putting a so so team over the top.

Go back to 1980

and you can add 8 combined championships in 9 years for the Magic Johnson Lakers and Larry Bird Celtics.

Think about this, since 1989 Detriot, Chicago, Houstan, Chicago, San Antonio, and LA have all won muliple Championships thanks to Issiah, Shaq, Kobe, Tim, MJ/Scottie, and Hakeem.

johnson dribbles the ball a ton and does not score very efficiently when he finally puts up shots.

im not sure why a SG with a career high PER of 19.5 would ever get anything close to a max deal. its amazing how the national media has failed to perceive how josh smith has been the best player in atlanta’s (re?)naissance. johnson has been steady, good and very overrated: like he always is.

Hollinger has been saying all year that Smith has been the key to that team

since he’s no longer shooting threes like a bonhead anymore. Plus he’s been a beast on the boards and also blocking shots.

by Illini15 on Nov 27, 2009 1:45 AM CST up reply actions

i did not know that but i dont really consider hollinger as "national media" since

1) he is not a bonehead and 2) you have to pay just to read him.

Johnson is good but not worth the max…but in the NBA you gotta overpay. He’s a #2 on a champion….we would still need a true star.
