Tyrus Thomas is just as good as LaMarcus Aldridge (seriously)
Before you scoff at the (overly provocative) headline, bear with me for a minute. Because he was a #2 draft pick and plays for a medium market team, LaMarcus Aldridge has been the recipient of a lot of hype. And some of it deserved. He's got a lot of potential as a player. But I've been watching Portland play a lot this year (and last), and I'm not convinced that if Tyrus Thomas were to take over the starting PF spot for the Blazers, he wouldn't contribute every bit as much to that team as LaMarcus Aldridge does. They are highly comparable players. The only real difference between them may be playing time.
Let's start with the obvious. Aldridge and Thomas are very similar physically. Thomas is 6'10'', 225 pounds; Aldridge is 6'11'', 240 pounds. They both have similar weakness as PFs. Neither has establish himself as a consistent post player. Indeed, Thomas's career 1.3 from BPG is superior to Aldridge's awful 1.06, and there's reason to believe Thomas's BPG will improve with more consistent playing time (Thomas is reportedly a good shot blocker in practice and was good in college). Neither Aldridge nor Tyrus has demonstrated good court vision or distribution skills. This has been a constant criticism of Thomas (he's a power forward trapped in a SF's body, etc.), but Aldridge isn't much better. To quote Hollinger:
One still wishes he were tougher on the blocks; his free throw rate remains unimpressive and Houston bulldog Luis Scola outscrapped him in the playoffs.
Despite his limited playing time this year and last, Thomas' points/rebounds per 40 minutes numbers are comparable to Aldridge's and would likely improve if he got sustained minutes at PF, as Aldridge has. Aldridge's best skill, by far, is shooting from 12 feet out, something he did a lot every year. This is also Thomas' best skill.(damn) Indeed, there's reason to believe Thomas may actually be better at it than Aldridge. Thomas is fearless and quite adept at blocking shots from the weakside. Aldridge, on the other hand, is not particularly good at helping on defense. As Hollinger notes, Aldridge "doesn't defend with great intensity and gets caught standing around a lot. He also has trouble matching up against the perimeter 4s who are spreading around the league like kudzu. "
If Aldridge has anything over Thomas, it's a little more finess around the hoop and a more proven mid-range game. But I see no reason to believe that, with comparable playing time, Thomas can't match Aldridge in these areas relatively quickly.
My point in drawing these comparisons is not to suggest that Thomas is or will be a star in the NBA or that LaMarcus Aldridge isn't or won't be. Rather, I think that differences in playing time and organization/coaches have led to a situation where two players of comparable current skill-level and potential (Aldridge and Thomas) have wildly divergent perceived values. Aldridge has been over-hyped and Thomas under-hyped. The jury is still out on both of them, but it would not surprise me at all if, when all is said and done, Thomas turns out to be the better of the two. At the very least, I expect that they will have comparable NBA careers.
(I'm not trying to be a jerk...I"m completely(somewhat) serious.)

it's satire, and I don't value the source anyway.
My only complaint is that you didn’t add the poll option of having far better numbers than what Aldridge puts up, plus maybe an all-star appearance :)

If Rose continues to play like right now, Aldridge will have an All-Star appearance before him ;-)
Ceterum censeo Lakers esse delendam
What is this mocking?
Gimme a link.
I support the Tornado Release ... and Young Bucks.
I'm over from BE, and this is exaclty why I've stopped reading the sidebar there
Rose is super fun to watch, and Bayless may turn out to be a great player. Rose is in a different league right now, and until something unforeseen happens, he will remain there.
That’s good mockering.
I'm a really really ridiculously good looking orange mocha frappaccino drinking manhammer sandwich

lol
I support the Tornado Release ... and Young Bucks.
By the way,
I voted yes.
This is more because I have an irrational hate of LMA, disregarding who he plays for, since he’s a “soft” 7-footer. See: Pau Gasol.
Kevin Garnett has always been magically exempt from this because of how he plays D.
I support the Tornado Release ... and Young Bucks.
You just named two (soon to be 3) NBA champions
AND….three players the Bulls FO would kill to have.

Wait, the Blazers are supposed to beat the Lakers.
You have to be out your fucking mind.

Yeah...
Cause the Blazers NEVER beat the Lakers.

LOL
Still, I’m quite sure Ozzie meant in relation to the Blazers’ current squad to the Lakers’ squad, which they would just punish in a 7game set. And what year was the last time you beat them in the playoffs, ’92? Do you remember who beat the Blazers that year? The Bulls. So I guess the Bulls could beat them this year too. ARGUMENT IS INFALLIBLE.
Yeah, I was really, really skeptical of Pau Gasol being anything more than an average NBA player
right up until the end of the playoffs last year.
LMA’s not as good.
At the very least, TT is a lot closer to LMA than Bayless is to Rose.
I support the Tornado Release ... and Young Bucks.
Bayless sucks
LMA is good.

It's true!
[Though I am hopeful that Bayless will be good. I’m rooting for him. :)]
Tyrus Thomas is good, too, though. He’s a legitimate NBA starter. I’m just saying, the difference between ‘Legitimate starter who’s a bit of a headcase’ and ‘guy who’s a marginal reserve right now at best’ is fairly large.
As we here know from Taj Gibson. Oh, Taj. …
I support the Tornado Release ... and Young Bucks.
how little you know of the bulls front office
those players would cost money, ergo, our front office wouldnt want them

Ha ha! Blazer Sedger here, and as Staylost said above, we deserve this.
Great satire. I almost didn’t get it. The funny thing is, saying Thomas is as good as Aldridge is way less controversial than saying Bayless is better than Rose. Great read.

So 16 and 6 and a 16.0 PER is entirely unattainable for Bayless if he got the minutes?
Yeah, okay.

maybe if he could shoot. or show he can do anything while being double-teamed. or
being the first or second option on a team, and all the defensive attention that comes with.

"Oooohhh, cat in the wall, eh? Now you're talkin' my language."
Correct
Blazer homer here, Bayless has 1 skill, attacking the hoop, and quite frankly, Rose is better at that and has other skills to boot….
RUDY > MJ
We had that post at BEdge?!?! And 1/3rd thought that JBayBay is actually as good as Rose?!?!
Roybot.
Dirty Socks.
yup
according to the Bedge who voted overwhelmingly in favor of LaMarcus to TT, the gap between Rose and Bayless seems to be much closer than the gap b/w Aldridge and Tyrus.
on a serious note
I’m jealous of your (Blazers) team. I really believe that TT in your system would have thrived, you have the ownership, GM and coach that would have utilized Tyrus to be one of the better 3/4s in the league. So yeah, your votes and posts piss me off but you guys win. Congrats.
That is what makes your (satirical) post.
Obviously LA has had a better career thus far, but Tyrus doesn’t suck, he has just been developed terribly. There is a legitimate argument to be made that had he been in a non-dysfunctional situation he would be absolutely dominant right now, in a way that LA never will be.
I agree I wrote a post like this at the end of the season.
Skiles and Vinny don’t like to play the guy alot and I IDK why. If Im Gar and Pax I demand Vinny play the guy at lest 30 to 33 mpg. He can give the other 15 to 18 mpg to Gibson. I bet you Tyrus would put up 14 ppg / 8 rpg and 3 bpg.
Homecoming
Blazer fan.
I have always seen TT as kind of a Josh Smith type if he were to get the minutes. We are looking for a backup 4. You wanna give him to us?? :-)
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.
by OCBlazerFan1 on Nov 26, 2009 10:42 AM CST up reply actions
Josh Smith is better than LaMarcus Aldridge.
And younger, too.
So I guess your comparison is a good thing?
(this year, anyway)
(and this is why the Bulls should have been playing Thomas consistently—and not saddled him with a coach that needed wins over development… like Rose—and fans should be patient with him)
People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett

We would have loved to comment about how cool this satire was but...
When the option popped up to become a member of this blog, I accepted. But it had for some reason a time period of 24 hours where I could not post or comment on your site. Also for unknown reasons I was able to click through to the poll. Thus most likely all the BEdgers would have loved to post but were unable. So no harm done right?

yeah, I forgot about that 24 hour thing
but you have to admit that BEdgers do this a lot, on any site whenever a poll or discussion involving the Blazers are involve
