I thought Rose

Looked great yesterday, flash back day to old Rose, perhaps a good sign even if the team lost.

Funny Deng played well but was quiet in the 2nd half, Noah had an off game, and Rose played great….

When can we get those 3 to play well together??? And I don’t know about the Fish….I like the Fish, but come on John, figure it out.

We have no scorer, he’s a scorer, we have no clutch go to guy, when he can be that, and we need help at the guard position. His other team were bad fits, but this would be perfect for him!

Great idea seeing as though McGrady is in the last year of his deal anyway.

If he’s healthy then he’ll help. If he’s not then in all honesty he can’t be any worse than Salmons has been this season. Hell, you get the feeling that even a terrible McGrady can give you what has amounted to a good Salmons game to this point.

Only problem is McGrady makes about $23M and Hinrich and Salmons combined make about $16M combined.

denver doesn't win this game without billups

melo was in check. bulls were getting and hitting shots. billups decided to drive the paint every damn possession for a long while there. he forced the issue with the refs, and the nuggets began forcing the issue defensively, playing way up tight on the bulls. without the denver misses and runout chances (‘cause they were at the line: chauncey), the offense began their “shrinking”. only brad seemed to know what to do, getting a few fouls and a couple backdoor passes. but there really weren’t the cutters necessary, and there weren’t the drives necessary. salmons would drive, but miss. derrick would drive on the break, but kick it out. mostly, they let themselves be trapped and took bad shots from the perimeter. tide turned.

if you look at the box, billips won’t look like all that much. but he eased up when he was no longer necessary. melo’s and jr’s lines look good, but that’s ’cause of the damage they did as front runners, effectively putting the bulls away (admittedly valuable…).

oh, what do i know? i “saw” it on choppy-vision feed. i guess in that sense they looked better against the lakers (in high def!). i still say with iverson chucking to get them back from their deficit rather than billups’ heady leadership, nuggets lose. and i hate billups.

13 first half points on 5-12

but only 6 pts on 3 of 10 when deng was in the game on him. in addition, deng blocked him twice.

unfortunately, vinny left about 4-5 minutes go by with deng on the bench, and put him back in just as karl sat melo in the second. there is recorded displeasure on evidence in the game thread regarding this matter.

“in check”, as in deng and helpers were doing the job according to plan, just as in the previous game to that point.

Their offense is terrible. They've gotten blown out a lot and all their wins are close games.

Their point differential is way negative and point differential is a better predictor of future success than current record.

The odds say that they will start losing some of those close games and they still will get blown out in their share of games. Right now, given their point differential, they are on pace to win about 30-35 games,

I don't know what they would do. If they got the number 1 pick again

after being a late lottery team, I think people would get suspicious. This is too speculative for my liking anyway. The Bulls will probably be a late lotto team this year (9th or 10th in the conference) barring a trade being made. If that’s the case, then they should be looking to draft the best player available, and probably someone that can shoot the damn ball.

Glass half full view:

Rose has been really bad for the most part, and looks to be getting better. Salmons and Kirk can’t shoot any worse than they have all year. Tyrus is injured and is replaced by Taj Gibson.

If Rose keeps trending up, Salmons and Kirk start shooting better, and Tyrus comes back and stays healthy, this team should definitely make the playoffs. I think it’s too easy to write them off after a blowout like this. When you take into account some of the factors that have hurt us, it’s actually fairly impressive we’re .500. If you had told me Rose (obviously not tonight), Kirk, and Salmons would be this bad and we’re 6-6 after 12 games, I’d say you’re kidding me. Especially with Taj Gibson starting a good chunk of the games. It’s easy to be pessimistic, and I can see why you are, but it’s too early to give up.

by Illini15 on Nov 22, 2009 12:29 AM CST up reply actions

Realistic view:

Kirk Hinrich has been playing like this for over 2 years. John Salmons is playing according to his career avg and last year was just an outlier. Tyrus comes back and plays the first 3 quarters of a game only to once again sit in the 4th quarters because quite simply, the Bulls don’t know how to evaluate and nurtureraw talent and they’d rather label him damaged goods and a trouble maker get rid of him.

With the exception of your part about Rose, everything I typed above isn’t pessimism….it’s fact.

Yeah, Salmons' last year was an outlier

by Illini15 on Nov 22, 2009 12:46 AM CST up reply actions

I'm not sure about that

I hope I’m wrong but seriously, Salmons is a 9ppg scorer in this league for his career. His best role was being the 3rd option to one of the best scoring back courts in the NBA last year with BG and Rose. It was an insult to fans for this organization to sell us on Salmons being a better fit for Rose because he’s taller and a better defender. BG scored 25 tonight by the way…How much we lose by tonight?

And Kirk. Well Kirk just hasn’t been the same since he signed that big contract now has he?

I know its early, but during the coarse of the season, teams that are well adjusted and have an identity get better, play strong against tough teams. The bulls at this point are struggling with good teams, and choking on dick to great teams. They have no consistency, which teams bound for the playoffs usually do. this season

is far better than last season. It is way too early to make all of your assumptions, things can go either way right now, and we will know what this team is bound for at the end of December. Im just saying that people shouldnt freak out about Rose or this team when we are only 12 games in. Also, We do have a really tough schedule, if we had the bucs schedule we probably would be better than where they are at now. If you read the previous post, nothing will be done because we are so close to the luxury tax, and we dont want to take any bad contracts because of 2010. so yeah it sucks but the bulls have the opportunity to get better. I’m glad we are not playing our best ball now because I would rather have this team peak at their best later in the year and into the playoffs. Its all about timing in the NBA.

Agreed 100% on the closer. I've been saying that since I've been posting on BaB.

Gordon was a closer and the Bulls got rid of him. I’ve come to the realization that it just isn’t as easy as snapping your fingers to get a solid post up guy who can do the same, but I refuse to believe it’s as hard as it’s been to do so. I feel like this Bulls team will rid itself of players who are talented and can contribute if those guys aren’t choirboys. The Bulls could have had a four man backcourt rotation of Rose, Gordon, J.R. Smith and Shannon Brown (if they had kept Gordon and traded Hinrich and simply held onto Brown and Smith when they had them and pretty much gave them both away). You gonna tell me that foursome isn’t at least as good as what the Bulls have now? You have shooters, athletes, and closers in that bunch. And that backcourt is about the same size as the one we have now (Rose, Hinrich, Salmons and Pargo). And now Tyrus Thomas in being pushed out the door. Noah is developing quickly and contract extension time may get contentious with him because he’s obviously turning into a guy other teams will covet…but does his personality clash with that of Reinsdorf/Paxson/Foreman? Is he too outspoken and not enough of a company man? Only time will tell.

by lexdiamonds0730 on Nov 22, 2009 2:00 PM CST up reply actions

heh

Hinrich really has to be the most polarizing figure in basketball or chicago sports….need proof? Check out the first gamethread for this game (the first half basically) and theres nothing bad written about hinrich, a few praises actually….

Get to the second Threat (second half) and everyone wants his head on a platter, or better yet his head traded to another team (with the platter being more incentive for the other team to accept).

I missed this game for the most part, i did watch exactly 10 minutes of it (which is more like 5 minutes of gametime) basically from the 9min mark in the 3rd quarter, to the 4 min mark in the same quarter. I was loving the game when rose was in it, i loved his re-found ability to drive, and a few drive and kicks (one to deng) and i was liking luol dengs game (the put back over carmello was out of this world!!!) then hinrich stepped into the game and immediatel got stripped, then a few possesions later he barely grazes the rim on a three (funny cuz jr smith did the same on the other hand right before that) and i texted my friends and family “get hinrich out and put rose back in”….maybe that was my mistake….

Like many sports fans im superstitious, but i have no set rules or superstitions that i follow, simply i feel (because i want to feel) like some action or comment made by me impacts my favorite players or teams….and this is how i felt when i got home and found that the bulls lost by 19 (!!!!) and my brother put it soley on hinrich. I should also mention near half time, before i saw my ten minutes of the game a friend called me to comment on the game and i suppose he felt the bulls were playing awesome (which the gamethread, first half, also proves)….

As soon as i get my financial stuff in order im getting att uverse, dvr the game, and hopefully at that time the bulls (hinrich) start performing better….

This was a bad game cuz we couldve won, shouldve won…the bulls teased us…

On the bright side…rose is back…deng seems healthy (seriously anyone see that putback….?) and noah is a beast…its happening slowly but i think next salmons will start to …score better (maybe not as good as last seaosn…but beter than he is now)….hinrich….dude ure making me look (feel) bad…

Offensively, Hinrich is playing significantly worse than either his rookie season or the 2008-2009 stinker season. He is not even making 70% of his free throws!

i think his defense has been awesome this year

i missed yesterdays game, but my brother told me he and jr smith went at it and soon after jr smith exploded and hinrich couldnt stop him…so not including yesterday his defense has been pretty spot on. But i wish he would couple it with something on offense. If hes not making 3 pters, get to the line and make free throws, if you cant do that either just try to set up the other guys…maybe that last part has more to do with coaching and whos around him when hes on the floor….All i know is that this team needs dire help at the sg position right now, moreso than the pf position…I dont think hinrich is a problem player or bringing this team down, like i said his defense alone this season merits his worth, but the fact that I KNOW he is so much better on offense than hes shown, and the fact that i felt he would show it this season more than any….its extremely dissapointing….Hes gotta start pulling a bg, as soon as he arrives in whatever city he is playing in, hes gotta find a gym and just start shooting jumpers…

Was taking some nasty shots that he hit…hard to guard that kind of crap, Smith goes on runs like that. We’ll sadly see Ben Gordon do that to us soon too….(Smith’s like a light BG, and Pargo’s a light Smith)…

Once he starting making those shots like the airball to Martin the half court threes it just became stupid combined with the Bulls just giving up… bad basketball on both ends.

That's what he does. And if the Bulls had kept him then he'd be hitting those shots for Chicago.

Smith is shooting about 44% from the field which beats the brakes off anything Salmons, Hinrich and Pargo are doing right now. And remember this was only his 5th or 6th game back from suspension. He’ll get on many more hot streaks.

Rose, Gordon, Smith and Shannon Brown could have been the 4 guards the Bulls had.

Instead it’s Rose, Salmons, Hinrich and Pargo. I think that first four would have been tougher…and Gordon, Smith and Brown all compliment Rose better than Hinrich, Salmons and Pargo IMO.

and chooses nice guys over talent. Although, I doubt they realized what kind of talent Shannon Brown had since no Bulls coach ever put him in the game.

by Basketball Smurf on Nov 22, 2009 11:25 PM CST up reply actions

BG and Smith are way different IMHO

Smith will, once every 20 games or so, become like an unconscious shooting machine. Gordon gets on hot streaks but he shoots kind of near the three-point line even so. Smith will shoot from 30, 35 feet out and hit nothing but net.

Khalid, you know enough about the game where you know that's the way JR Smith is.

He is high risk/high reward. He takes some crazy shots but he makes enough of them where you can’t necessarily say they are bad shots. If this guy pulls up from 28 ft he has just as good a chance at that shot going in as Hinrich and Salmons have of shooting from 16 ft at this point.

On another note. It just KILLS me everytime I see J.R. Smith or Shannon Brown perform an incredibly athletic feat. Underscores how completely devoid of pure athletes we are in Chicago. Sure athleticism alone won’t win games, but if you can teach them to contribute then that goes a long way. Now, much like Brown and Smith left Chicago and proved they could play, I fear Tyrus Thomas will go be a Josh Smith type player on somebody’s team next year.

by lexdiamonds0730 on Nov 22, 2009 2:09 PM CST up reply actions

its a different story for jr smith

if he were on teh bulls as opposed to denver….

Denver has a super duper star in Carmello, and it has one of the best leaders in the game in Chauncey Billups, his uncontrollable attitude and ludicrous shot control actually is controlled and contained by those two. There was no way in hell skiles wouldve given him the light of day (he wouldve been the coach when jr smith was here) and even if skiles wasnt here those shots that you talk about being high risk high reward….itd be a much higher risk for this team. Denver can cover for a guy like jr smith if he isnt hitting, guys like carmello, chauncey, even nene can pull enough attention towards themselves that jr smith doesnt always have to take crazy shots…

Jr smith just wouldnt work here in chicago, even if his numbers stayed the way they were, it still wouldnt work….Its like dennis rodman..he was always good, but in chicago he was played by a coach and a team that could harness his craziness in their favor….the bulls couldnt control jr smiths personality and it would show in games…

As for the tyrus bit, yea i see that happening too…but the problem is i dont see him being that kind of player for the bulls for a variety of reasons…thats why i would like to trade him for something not just let him go…and hopefully not just exprirings

I don't wanna say anybody wouldn't have worked.

That’s the equivalent of saying somebody is going to work when in fact it turns out they didn’t. But I see your point. No doubt J.R Smith would have been a challenge but it would have represented a true NBA talent. Besides isn’t it the coaches job to make these types of things work? Last I checked J.R. Smith played for Byron Scott when he was a teenager. Scott wasn’t the easiest guy in the league to play for and Smith managed to do that. If you or anybody else is waiting for a team of nice guys or choirboys then the Bulls can just forget about ever winning another championship. You are going to have to take on some personalities that are less than ideal if you want to win. That’s the nature of any professional sport.

However, you are spot on with the Carmelo and Chauncey points. You hit the nail on the head with that one piccolo. This is why it further disgusts me that the Bulls would rid themselves of the guy who was unquestionably the best and most consistent player on the team a year ago (while Rose was the most talented). Instead of getting rid of Gordon to keep Hinrich they needed to keep BG and bring in players BETTER than him so that Gordon could be a complimentary player on this Bulls team.

I just want this team to get more talented. Playing hard will only get you so far (We say that in the Skiles era). You need to attain or develop top notch talent in order to compete for championships. The surest sign that the Bulls haven’t done that is the lack of all-star consideration Bulls players have received since 98’. Teams that haven’t had all-stars since 1998:

Bobcats
Grizzlies
Warriors
Bulls (Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah are hopefuls)

I don’t count the Thunder because Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis made it for that franchise a few years ago and Kevin Durant WILL be an all-star very soon.

The Bulls have no business being in the same category as the Grizzlies and Bobcats in ANY conversation!!!
