Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

OK, it's against Golden State, but still. 55 points is amazing for a rookie.

The Warriors suck, but it's not like people drop 55 points on them every night

When was the last time a rookie scored 50? Did Lebron drop 50 on anyone as a rookie? Regardless, Knicks fans have to be besides themselves. I think Jennings had more points tonight than Jordan Hill has minutes played this season.

I want to say AI did it a long time ago

Can’t think of anything recent. Durant?

55 points, for a rookie, point guard, at 6 feet 1 inch, after not even scoring the 1st quarter.........

This is impressive! I cannot think of a better rookie performance I have seen in my short span of living. This guy is a special player and there’s no other way to put it!

The Warriors play 4 guards and one big and none of them could stop Jennings

I saw the final half of play and I tell you he put on a show. The Bucks arena was almost calling for him to get the rock and every time he shot and hit everyone lost there mind. He hit 27 or 29 points in the 3rd quarter alone, had he hit 6 points in the first quarter he’d have a 60 point game and this is from the hardest position to score that many, in only his what….9th game of his professional career!

by Mr Rhythm on Nov 14, 2009 10:43 PM CST reply actions

From where was he getting shots?

Were these jump shots?

21-34 is just awesome shooting for a guard.

12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

Mostly jumpers from what I saw of the last quarter and a half! Pick and roll defender went under the screen alot ......

he would hit the one hand floater some too, but mostly he went crazy from deep. The kid almost has the form of Michael Redd. He had the arena going nuts, it was like they almost could’ve cared less if they won or lost as long as he just kept scoring! It was a really incredible display of speed, and skill. He may be the best shooting (not scoring) point guard in the NBA right now!

Holy shit

He nearly broke Wilt Chamberlain’s rookie record for points in a game (58). If you come anywhere near one of Wilt’s records, you’ve done something awesome.

Oh my god.

I have been a fan of Jennings. This is too much.
Wow.

I support the Tornado Release ... and Young Bucks.

55 points in 3 quarters. He didn't even score in the first! Ridiculous.

1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box

I expected to see an incredibly inefficient stat line.

I was wrong. 21-34 on his field goals. This kid is going to be good.

by penguin1 on Nov 15, 2009 12:46 AM CST reply actions

It's pretty difficult to score 55 points inefficiently actually. You'd have to take like 50 shots, which is

damned near impossible.

1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box

by fundamentallysound on Nov 15, 2009 1:06 AM CST up reply actions

what I mean by that is, if you scored 55 points, chances are you were scoring pretty well

to get that many in 40 minutes of play.

1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box

Something about Skiles' system maybe?

Ramon Sessions had some huge games as well. 44 and 12 last year was the big one. He had a 24 assist game as a rookie.

Jennings has shot well, but he shoots like I did when I was 10 – kicking his feet out for some extra flair. (I would routinely rain 3s over Olajuwon while he was afraid of getting kicked.) I dunno, I love Jennings’ attitude, but these efficiency numbers (17/30 on threes this year) are a little ridiculous. The knock on him was he couldn’t shoot at all, and now he’s Ray Allen.

by YaoPau on Nov 15, 2009 1:32 AM CST up reply actions

you are right

hinrich was putting up 15 points back when skiles was coaching the bulls!!!! Those career years make sense now. Too bad i thought Kirk was starting to break out back then.

i think chris webber did that once.

other gems from that night:

tim thomas’ 39 point 1 rebound game. jacque vaughn getting a 3 point, 3 reb, 4 asst., 1 stl, 1blk, 5 fta, 5 turnover game in 16 mins (busy night!). darius miles blocking 8 shots in 35 mins. and iverson putting up 30 shots in a game his team won by 32.

the funniest is that

he drops 55 against Golden State, the very team that had Jennings at pre-draft training camp and had a shot at snatching him with the 7th pick… Warriors fans must be biting their nails…

Being a lefty point guard myself, i am officially in love with B-Jennings! However, i can’t wait to see my very favourite player D-Rose come back to full-speed health !!

He has to be pissed off that he fell to the 10th pick

To have stiffs like Thabeet and Jordan Hill picked ahead of you has to be a little embarrassing. He already took a lot of abuse when he went to Europe, with the college guys claiming he was ruining his career and all, so he’s got plenty of motivation.

by Big D on Nov 15, 2009 9:41 AM CST up reply actions

part of the problem

is he came off badly in the interviews. Not sure why outside of immaturity. They also said he had no shot. Ha! He spent the summer taking 1000 shots a day.

by KT on Nov 15, 2009 10:34 AM CST up reply actions

i don't get this no shot thing

every of his high school highlights, he’s pouring down dozens of threes way beyond the arc..

by simonswiss on Nov 15, 2009 12:02 PM CST up reply actions

To say he had no jumper is crazy. You don't just develop a shot like that overnight or a summer.....

I’m thinking he may have had this negative press due to his not attending college where he could be exploited before he makes his money in the NBA, or it could just be the conspiricalisticness in me that has this opinion. Either way whoever said that was wrong.

by Mr Rhythm on Nov 15, 2009 12:20 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, but that's what they said

I think in part because he didn’t play that well in Europe.

by KT on Nov 15, 2009 4:32 PM CST up reply actions

Jennings is the real deal, it’s not the system. He is just very talented. To be honest, he is more talented than Derrick, just not as big or athletic.

Compton!

I love Jennings.

I hate that he’s in our division
