Kirk Hinrich just doesn't belong on the court.

His defense isn’t that great. His shooting is comical. He’s just an awful, awful player right now, and Salmons isn’t much better. Those two lost this game for us. I’d much rather have Pargo on the floor – at least he’d he’d make one or two.

The poster formerly known as Freethefro.

by MPG on Nov 11, 2009 8:21 PM CST reply actions

I'd rather have none of the 3.

Especially not Pargo. Bc as cold as Kirk and Salmons are on offensive, Pargo is just as cold and he’s a midget who can’t play D.

These games (and season) are on Pax

He had an offer on the table to dump Kirk for salary cap relief to Minnesota at the trade deadline and refused to do it. There are simply no shooters. The lanes will never be open for Rose because no defense will respect Salmons or Hinrich outside. He will bob and weave and settle for jumpers for most of the year. Salmons is simply keeping the space warm for Joe Johnson next year, when we are spurned by Wade, Lebron or Bosh (who I wouldn’t want at a max contract anyway). They’ll never admit it, but the Rose/Johnson/Gordon trio would have been pretty exciting.

The Bulls offense has regressed from previous seasons to the point where a post player is no longer their number one need.

Amare does have a midrange shot, but he's not a low post player

He’s a great finisher around the basket, which we could definitely use, but he’s not the “throw it down low into the big fella” guy you seem to be talking about.

I would hesitate to say that boozer posts like a champ, but he would probably help more than he’d hurt us.

Hinrich and Salmons can shoot the ball....

…but it seems that both struggle with the defense paying more attention to them. They aren’t as adept offensively at creating their own shots consistently against 1st unit players the way Ben Gordon is and it’s proving to be problematic…even Derrick Rose is suffering because he doesn’t have as much operating room on the perimeter because you don’t have to pay special attention to anyone else now that Gordon is gone and Salmons is shooting atrociously.

I alluded to this in another post. I don’t know if VDN can push him to be great the way he needs to. Chris Paul has Byron Scott who pushed him from day one. Deron Williams has Jerry Sloan…enough said. Tony Parker has Popovich. Brandon Jennings may one day be great and a big part of it will be Skiles pushing him.

Now every great PG doesn’t have someone pushing him, but I think Rose may need that and VDN may not be that guy.

Post player not essential

If you have one (of the few), then congratulations, but you just need someone who can get people easy shots and then have people who can make them. Phoenix doesn’t have a post player, but Nash gets people easy shots. Garnett doesn’t operate exclusively in the post. The great benefit of post players is forcing double teams and freeing up shooters. Great point guard + great shooters will have the same effect. Too bad we have below average shooters. Every game will be a struggle between 88-94 points.

The Bulls big men aren’t the weakness of this team, the weakness is and will be perimeter players!

by Mr Rhythm on Nov 11, 2009 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

Of the last 30 or so NBA Champions, only about 4 of those teams didn't have great PFs or Cs.

late 70s Sonics
late 80s Pistons
90s Bulls
2004 Pistons

A great big man exponentially improves your chances of winning (All truly great big men except Patrick Ewing have won championships and been THE FOCAL POINT of their championship teams…Russell, Chamberlain, Elvin Hayes, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, Moses Malone, David Robinson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O’Neal, Tim Duncan…and even Ewing got to the finals where he was worn out by Olajuwon). But there aren’t any TRULY great big men now. Dwight Howard is the closest thing to great, but he benefits from not having to play against many great centers. If he got his post game together he would be UNSTOPPABLE!!! As it stands, Yao Ming kills him and he sometime struggles with an old Shaq. A young Shaq would have THOROUGHLY DOMINATED Dwight Howard. How do you guys think Howard would have fared against Hakeem in his prime? Do you guys realize that Shaq’s rookie season was better than anything Dwight Howard has EVER done??? It would have been no contest.

Teams keep trying to find another way because great big men don’t grow on trees. This is why Portland took Oden over Durant (looks like a HUGE mistake now). I personally never thought Oden was going to be great so I didn’t think along those lines, but I understand Portland’s thinking with the pick.

Sue369 hit it on the head with the minutes for Noah and Deng. James Johnson needs to play more at both the three and the four. If he makes mistakes, then he makes them, but Deng is coming off injury and Noah is the only one rebounding on every possession.

By the way, if you’re looking for fun basketball (or how the Bulls should play), the Rockets are putting on a clinic of uptempo basketball and efficient offense against the Grizz. Their post player – Luis Scola. But they can space the floor and get up and down. Adelman is definitely an unappreciated coach.

"Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen." - Michael Jordan

by PeteRoc on Nov 11, 2009 9:14 PM CST up reply actions

Watch him probe with the ball

He’s trying to get in the paint, but there’s no where to go. The Bulls run screen roll ineffectively, so both defenders end up zoning up on Rose. When you couple that with the fact that no one is shooting well right now, its easy to sag off the perimeter guys to make driving that much more difficult? What are his options then? Pass to John Salmons?

I don’t know how hurt he is, but the biggest problem with the Bulls offense remains that Rose too often gets the ball upcourt, flips it to Noah at the elbow or Salmons on the wing, and then fans to the corner, only to get the ball back under 8 on the shot clock. What can he do then? I just wish VDN, as assistant GM of the Suns (whatever that position entailed), watched how Nash orchestrated things. That’s what we should be trying to build towards, even if Rose’s skills don’t exactly match Nash.

by Gene Banks on Nov 11, 2009 9:20 PM CST up reply actions

What other coaches do well is.

have motion away from the ball as they run pick ‘n rolls (or whatever else) on the ball side. You’re right…teams run a mini zone on Derrick as he’s coming around the pick, but its easy to do that when everyone else is standing around. Opposing teams are always in perfect position to help b/c no one else is doing anything when we run that pick ’n roll.

You’d think we could figure out a way to run (at least once) that pick ‘n roll with Derrick and Brade while someone sets a screen on Noah’s man, so he can try to seal a passing lane under the basket. That might give Derrick an avenue to attack the basket if the other defenders are occupied with action away from the ball. We just don’t do much in our offense and given the shooting woes, I don’t get the sense VDN will add something creative to the offense to try to get easier looks for Derrick.

"Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen." - Michael Jordan

by PeteRoc on Nov 11, 2009 9:31 PM CST up reply actions

I agree - off ball movement is essential

The greatest failing of the last three regimes is that no one has taught Tyrus how to effectively screen and crash down to the front of the rim. With his athleticism, the defenses would be forced to go with him, leaving the opposite elbows open for a weakside flash or a Rose drive and kick. As it stands, our bigs don’t set effective screens, and in Miller’s case, he almost always fades to the top of the key after setting his screen. He never actually clears anyone out of the way with a hard dive.

The simple fact is there is no offensive scheme at all except for weak two man screen roll, effectively killing Deng’s greatest strength and exploiting mismatches that Rose could create.

It's the way he got it

that has me worried. I just want him to attack the rim more. He blew by people a lot last year – this year he’s living by the jumper. It’s like he’s completely reversed what aspect of his game was complimentary and what was dominant. Hopefully this is just injury…or deconditioning…or whatever.

Well

Rose is still for real.Teams know who he is now thats the thing>he will get around it hes still young. And like I’ve been saying forever its too soon.

by T.Moore on Nov 11, 2009 9:42 PM CST up reply actions

I'd like to have seen an obvious step up

but…

  • Dealing with injury
  • Has been coming on more over the last couple games
  • Has less to work with offensively
  • Hasn’t been defending credibly

Yes, I expect a bit more, but I’m not freaked out yet

by Sports2 on Nov 11, 2009 9:46 PM CST up reply actions

Rose will still be a star no question

And again 8 games why panic now? 74 games left

by T.Moore on Nov 11, 2009 9:35 PM CST up reply actions

I think his defense has been better of late.

In fact, he’s definitely been more active on defense, so I don’t quite agree with the laziness part.

Other than the fact that (1) he’s coming off an injury, (2) his shooters can’t throw it in the ocean and its thus easier for teams to sag off the perimeter, and (3) we run a very basic offense, I think there’s reason to be optimistic about him eventually getting better.

He's a hard worker in the offseason,

but he plays very passively. Doesn’t expend much energy rebouding or getting in the passing lanes – though tonight was a little different in that regard.

by T.Moore on Nov 11, 2009 10:49 PM CST up reply actions

That's def true

about the sagging into the lane. When he has the ball there’s literally 3-4 guys in the lane. Today for instance – it’s not just that Kirk + Salmons were 3-24. They were 3-24 on wide open shots. In rhythm, wide open, easy shots.

i was saying that same shit, like how can we win with these guys missing open shots

they are paid to hit open shots, if they arent doing that, then why collect a paycheck….its worse at the free throw line, i think if you are in the NBA, its pathetic for you to shoot below 80% (if you are not shaq, that is)

Gotta be honest

I have too. He just doesn’t play with much heart. I’m not even overreacting to this start, you could see it last year too. He shys away from contact, is far too willing to settle for jumpers and just doesn’t take over games like he could. Just look at Jennings in Milwaukee, he had 32 and 9 tonight. Other than that other worldly playoff game, has Rose had one game like that? And nobody can tell me that Jennings has more talent then Rose. It’s just something upstairs, the guy plays timid. He’ll just wow you with an incredible play here or there, but he has not developed any kind of consistant game, just flashes.

by T.Moore on Nov 11, 2009 9:46 PM CST up reply actions

I just don't think it works that way with the truly great players

Most of them come in and are great from the jump and just continue to improve. Did CP3 have growing pains? What about Lebron or Wade? I don’t think so.

With some it takes time

As much as I hate Kobe.It took him a while to be that guy he came from shooting airballs in a playoff game to the best 2day.Some develop fast some slow it just happens. We dont know the future. But again rose will be that guy but the coach has to do his part to make him better. Also he said that he had never taken so much time out of playing before.Give him a break he will come around.

by T.Moore on Nov 11, 2009 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

Wade made a big jump from year 1 to year 2

But I think it’s already reasonable to say that it’s very unlikely Rose will be as good as Lebron or Wade or CP3. He’s played enough games and you can look at the numbers — he’s not there.

The question is will he be as good as someone like Billups or Deron Williams? I don’t know.

by hitlesswonder on Nov 11, 2009 9:56 PM CST up reply actions

Rose is not Wade

Like i said for some it takes awhile.I dont get why people thought after 8 games comming out of an injury that rose all of a sudden wont be a good player.Seriously??Is everyone’s confidence in him really that weak?

by T.Moore on Nov 11, 2009 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

Garnett had growing pains

LeBron struggled his rookie year. CP3, Wade, Duncan, Jordan started great, but they also spent 2-4 years in college.

If you were expecting Rose to be the next Chris Paul, well he probably won’t be. But he still has plenty of time to become great.

I agree with that. I think Jennings ends up being a better player than Rose

But I think Jennings has an actual coach. Maybe no one could make Rose more aggressive, but being coached by VDN for 1.whatever years is not helping him develop.

Honestly? He could be a star, but it seems less likely to me now than last year

In the end, I think Rose will be a good player but not elite.

Athletically, he definitely has it in him and obviously he’s still young — but I fear the Bulls will fail to develop him. I think years from now, people will realize what a terrible hire VDN was for Rose’s career. But Billups became elite late in his career, so it can happen. Of course, he was no longer with the team that drafted him.

Rose needs a scorer to be Rose.

There isn’t anyone that demands a double so teams will collapse the lanes and deny Rose the drive. Then they know the Bulls can’t make clutch shots. Once the league catches on which may be happening… wins will be harder to come by.

by SoulEater7 on Nov 11, 2009 9:48 PM CST reply actions

Exactly!

He needs Help and also hes still young you expect him to take over on his 2nd year right away comming out of an injury and haven’t play with the team for about more than a month.

by T.Moore on Nov 11, 2009 9:51 PM CST up reply actions

They don't have the right players around him.

The point is to build around Rose well I’m not sure players like Deng and HInrich fit well with Rose. Deng can’t stretch the defense(15 footer or die) and Hinrich is inconsistent and bad.

There just isn’t anyone to help him out. He’s a point guard with a pass first mentality yet people want him to be Wade and he’s not. He thrives on Knifing in the lanes and nobody on this team can play off them because they don’t move with out the ball well.

The Bulls are asking Rose to be the guy but haven’t put the right players around him. He’s a point guard not a shooting guard the load is way too much for him to carry this team. He’s a creator and makes people better. But those people have to be good at basketball.

by SoulEater7 on Nov 11, 2009 10:04 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Rose is a POINT GUARD hes not Wade who is suppose to take over

I agree they need to build around him.Deng should stay if he keeps his play up Noah as well. And then after that get a guy like bosh or some nice CONSISTENT 3 point shooters and a scoring big man and we are straight. Its not him its some of his cast like j-Sal and hinrich and the worst out of the 2 Pargo

by T.Moore on Nov 11, 2009 10:10 PM CST up reply actions

Nobody on the Hornets or Heat demand double teams either

Paul and Wade worked around it by passing more than ever. Noah might not have a full post game, but he can make an alley-oop 10 times out of 10.

by YaoPau on Nov 11, 2009 10:10 PM CST up reply actions

My point is... Derrick Rose.

I don’t care what other players do. He isn’t that player. He’s a creator and he thrives off knifing to the basket. THE TEAMS IN THIS LEAGUE ARE SHUTTING DOWN THE LANES FORINCING HIM TO SHOOT JUMPERS BECAUSE NOBODY ELSE ON THE BULLS CAN MAKE MONEY SHOTS.

not only that he’s not healthy watch this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJwBZRjNXVw

by SoulEater7 on Nov 11, 2009 10:17 PM CST up reply actions

they are both great athletically. I have no idea.

But if you’re asking me what they do as basketball players I can give you a list.

by SoulEater7 on Nov 11, 2009 10:22 PM CST up reply actions

You're honestly asking me the difference between Wade and Rose?

Wade is the second or third best player in the league. He can shoot over you, under you, on the side of you and on top of your head. He can make threes and he can get to the cup at will. Because people have to respect his jumper. He’s a shoot first player.

Rose is a sound player who can knife a defense and finish with the best of them. He can break players down on the dribble and create for other guys. He’s a create for my team first player.. or a point guard.

by SoulEater7 on Nov 11, 2009 10:27 PM CST up reply actions

That's the thing though, Wade isn't a great shooter

Wade last year: made 43.1% of 2pt jumpers, 31.7% of 3pt jumpers, 76.5% of free throws
Rose last year: made 42.8% of 2pt jumpers, 22.2% of 3pt jumpers, 78.8% of free throws

I’d say Wade’s 3" height advantage helps him finish around the rim, though I agree Rose is awesome at it. Wade’s undoubtedly more skilled at drawing fouls, but there’s no reason why Rose can’t learn that.

They’re so similar. If defenses can’t stop Wade from getting to the hole, they shouldn’t be able to stop Rose.

by YaoPau on Nov 11, 2009 11:16 PM CST up reply actions

Agree that Wade drawls fouls better.

but Wades game is more well rounded.. I just farted.

by SoulEater7 on Nov 11, 2009 11:26 PM CST up reply actions

Rose is not Wade PERIOD.

Hes a creator he plays selfless baskeball.he makes plays for his teamates.Thats what point guards do.i dont care about his atheleticism.Thats his job he can score as well.but his MAIN role is to be a creator.

by T.Moore on Nov 11, 2009 10:26 PM CST up reply actions

Wade gets the benefit of the whistle.

Rose doesn’t. When Wade throws his body into the crowd under the basket he will either get a shot, a shot and one, or two fts. AKA – it is always worth it for Wade to drive. Rose gets his ribs knocked in and no call. Somewhere it will have to give. Either we get a good outside shooter who will stretch the defense and give Rose more room or Rose will have to learn to throw himself where there is no room…and hope he gets a call.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

The Bulls have been going in circles to nowhere since M.J. retired

Its funny how last year they needed a big man/post presence and our backcourt depth was the strength of our team, now our backcourt is our weakness because one player is gone, and our frontcourt is our strength

by mustanging5 on Nov 11, 2009 10:12 PM CST reply actions

Oh Yeah

D Rose is a second year pg who is expected to be the leading scorer for his team, a “playoff team”, That was never a good plan, cant remember that ever happening in the league especially with this low level of talent around him, we really cant criticize him when the team got worse and he has always been a pass first guard not a big time scorer like D. Wade

by mustanging5 on Nov 11, 2009 10:18 PM CST reply actions

You make a good point.

The Bulls MUST surround Rose with more capable players. This is one reason I could not believe they got rid of Gordon. People can say what they want about Gordon, but Gordon was one guy who demanded defensive attention on every possession and kept the floor spread for Rose. Despite any struggles they may have had last year there is no doubt they would have become a truly formidable backcourt in the years to come…and seeing as though VDN still likes to trot out the small lineup, Gordon’s size would have been a non-issue.

The Bulls absolutely have to put players who complement Rose’s style around him. Gordon was one of those guys…and Tyrus Thomas is another. Seems the Bulls are more interested in running guys who can play with Rose out of town. I fear in another 2 years Rose may want to flee town himself………..

I wouldn't say he has a higher ceiling.

Think game 1 against Boston for Rose. That can be the norm. Not the 36 pts, but his impact on the game. His lax approach is getting tiresome though. He waits until the late parts of the game to assert himself. When he turns it on there is NOBODY that can deal with him. That lax attitude has to stop. This is when I wish Skiles was still coaching the Bulls. He seems to be letting Jennings learn on the fly but you know Skiles is holding him accountable in a stern way. Rose needs a similar approach from the coach.

With Deng being out of my crosshairs, there is another Bull square in my sights...JOHN SALMONS!!

This is the guy many of you thought would adequately replace Ben Gordon. I respectfully say, GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE WITH THAT BULLSHIT!!!

Salmons is hot garbage right now. Being counted on the contribute against 1st units on a regular basis on a team with playoff ambitions is taking it’s toll on Salmons. His 6’7" frame has not proven to be any more or an advantage than Gordon’s 6’3" frame was a disadvantage. Add to that the fact that VDN likes to go with the small line up and put Salmons at the 3 sometimes anyway and losing Gordon for nothing is looking worse by the day.

Having said that, I cannot believe that Salmons will continue to be this bad. It’s almost impossible for him to remain this bad. He has to be close to the bottom of the NBA in so many things right now. He absolutely must get better.

As for Luol, he deserves praise now. I told you I’d come off him when he played like he had a set. He’s playing with the kind of energy I’ve been looking for out of him and I gotta give him credit. He looks good out there. I still wish we could get more out of him, but I can live with what he’s giving the Bulls now. He’s looking like a 6yr/$72M player now and I’m happy about that. Rose needs a better supporting cast but more importantly, the Bulls need an experienced, knowledgable head coach.

Even though our resident retard called 3 timeouts in the 4th quarter to plot his offensive sets and strategy, the Bulls made ZERO field goals in the final 9 MINUTES and 21 SECONDS,which indicates to me, they don’t miss Ben Gordon (ave 24 ppg) at all. Who needs a scorer when Rose, Kurt and Salmons shot a spectacular .286 (10 for 35) while Miller again appeared completely gassed, going 0 for 5 in 19 minutes.

Vinny is starting to panic, not having Tyrus around anymore. Although he never got any 4th quarter minutes when healthy, I’m almost sure if TT was in tonight, the Bulls complete flop would have likely been blamed on his inability to focus and lack of basketball IQ. The circus trip hasn’t even begun, but lucky Bulls fans already get to witness the clowns sitting on the sidelines with their clipboards every game. Instead of oversize shoes and clown costumes, they’re wearing fancy suits while posing as competent NBA coaches. Maybe they ought to place a call across town and get Lovie’s advice on how to repair a sinking ship (more cover 2 or just more cover their asses?).

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.
