this is the play of the game for me

derrick’s ankle is no good? fine. put a body on the guy! you’ve played one full nba season, and one full 7 game series against this dude, c’mon!

so right from the jump, instead of a transition chance early, they’re down 18, and pierce joins allen with confidence from the arc. (and it goes from there…)

Allen isn't usually bothered by defenders.

If he goes off you just hope you have someone who can offensively match him to offset the damage. Defending him better doesn’t make a difference.

look, it’s not his physical ability or his skills. It’s he doesn’t take the team’s success as his personal responsibility. He just keeps passing it off, floating into the corner. that’s not being “unselfish”. it’s failing to recognize your role on the team, or not having the balls to try to take over and fail.

He’s only 21. that’s true. he might become a star at some point. but he’s not playing like he wants to be one, and it was the same at many time last year – game seven, for instance.

I think some of it come from Derrick not really being a man

and what I mean by that is — his whole life he’s had his mom or brothers pushing him to be the guy he needs to be to get into the NBA. He’s been deferential with his own life, for the most part. Why should we expect him to be anything but deferential on the basketball court? When he talked about “my veterans” last night in his post-game interview, I almost threw up in my mouth. He still doesn’t view this as his team and until he does, he’s not going to see the importance he has to the team. He can’t wait until the 4th to takeover. Sometimes, waiting that long, like tonight, is too late.

i agree he needs to be more aggressive

i’m just withholding judgment for a game where the Bulls weren’t down 30 and Rose doesn’t come in with a known injury which the Bulls believed would limit his minutes. The Celtics always kill the Bulls. They defend the point guard position better than any team in the NBA. Lets see what he looks like in Miami. If he comes out passive again than I may start to worry

Kobe was (in hindsight) a bad example, because he

came in to a much more talented team, but Wade absolutely did not play like that his rookie year. He attacked a ton. He’s been my favorite player since Marquette and I was much chagrined when the Bulls were unable to draft him. I watched his rookie year very closely. He’s been attacking from Day 1. LeBron’s the same deal. He’s always been aggressive and took ownership of his team. CP3 same deal. If Rose wants to be like those guys, he’s got to own this team and take it personally when they are getting pasted.

Wade's rookie season

he shot the ball less than Rose, he averaged a .5 pt less, but did get to the free throw line a ton more. Of course, he was assisted on 6% more of his inside shots – a function of playing off the ball. I fail to see the huge difference in aggressiveness between the two as rookies. And he was 2 years older. Just saying

by fundamentallysound on Oct 30, 2009 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

He didn't play a lot-

he pissed off his teammates when he did, and in practice, with selfish play and arrogance – such was his rep. And the reason he didn’t play is that he wasn’t ready…but he still had that aggressiveness, no matter how wrongheaded it was at the time. That’s the difference I’m trying to illustrate.

Anyway, I hope you’re right, that Derrick’s just hurt, or out of shape.

The poster formerly known as Freethefro.

by MPG on Oct 30, 2009 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not trying to excuse Rose's

lack of aggression, I just think it takes time.

In Kobe’s 3rd season, first year as a full time starter, he averaged 19 pts a game on 15.6 shots a game. For comparisons sake, Rose took 14.5 shots a game last season. And he’s the POINT GUARD

It really wasn’t until his 5th season, at the ripe age of 22, when he became the KOBE we all know. That season he averaged 29 pts a game on 22 shots. This is when the friction between him and Shaq really came to a head – when he stop deferring to Shaq after FOUR FULL SEASONS IN THE NBA.

Patience people. Like I said, I’m not trying to excuse Rose’s lack of aggression. I’m just pointing out that it is not rare.

And I also think it has to do with play calling. The Bulls ran play after play for Deng and Salmons. The only play the ran for Rose was a pick and roll which the Celtics were trapping and the ball movement wasn’t getting the ball back around to Rose.

Rose’s problems are part of aggression, part coaching, and part scheme. I’m fairly confident that they will get it straightened out over time.

by Basketball Smurf on Oct 30, 2009 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions

That's some nice level thinking there.

I hope it’s the case. The issue right now is that Derrick’s clearly the most talented player on the team. They need him to be that aggressive now, because he gives them the best chance to win.

But yeah, way too early for the panic button.

Putting this game into perspective

(originally a fanshot, decided to post here)

That wasn’t pretty. But the comments midgame made it seem like the entire season was shot. (Rose sucks, Salmons sucks, Luol sucks, VDN sucks, Pargo sucks.) We just crushed the Spurs last night! A few thoughts on why armageddon might not have hit…

1) John Salmons has slumped before.

A few from last season:
Games #8-10: 18/47 FG, 3/10 3’s
Games #29-35: 32/98 FG, 5/21 3’s
Games #77-79: (w/Bulls, last 3 of regular season) 9/36 FG, 6/16 3’s

(For the record, Ben Gordon did too.)
Games #10-13: 22/68 FG, 4/25 3’s
Games #58-72: 27/72 FG, 3/14 3’s
Games #76-78: 14/47 FG, 4/17 3’s

Slumps happen. Salmons’ current slump is especially bad, but it’s not impossible for a .570 TS% shooter to have a .280 TS% in 36 attempts. He’ll have about 800 more attempts to turn that around :)

2) The Celtics shot out of their ass

According to shot chart:
20/32 on 2pt jumpers (62.5%)
12/24 on 3pt jumpers (50.0%)

The Celtics made 41% of their 2pt jumpers last year and 39% of their 3’s. Had they shot those percentages instead, they would’ve scored 22 less points. The Bulls lost by 28. Our D was crappy, but it was magnified by the Celtics’ not being able to miss.

3) It’s one game

In the Boston series last year, games #1, #2, #4, #5, #6 were decided by 3 points or less. In Game 3, we were down 34 in the 4th. Bad games will happen, especially when we play a team as good as the Celtics. It doesn’t mean we’re doomed.

4) Noah and Tyrus look good

At the all-star break last season, I was looking at Noah’s NBA Hot Zones and he had something like 5 made field goals outside of the deep paint. Hence the ridiculous FG%.

Today alone, he had 4 FG outside of the deep paint – from 6, 6, 7 and 20 ft! He’s added a jumpshot (not pretty), and a left hook (prettier). And he’s averaging a double double (with 3.5 assists!) in 27.5mpg.

Tyrus is averaging 17.3 points and 10.5 reb per 36 this season. Nothing new skills-wise, and it’s hard to say if this signals a change, but so far so good.

Overall, we’ve played the Spurs and Celts and we’re 1-1. Not bad.

I have a thought.. Vinny had a lineup in the 2nd of..

Pargo
Hinrich
Deng
Taj
Miller

and they totally got out played. They built a nice lead for the starters and then the Celtics started draining 3 pointers.

by SoulEater7 on Oct 30, 2009 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions

my thoughts on your points

1. I’m not THAT concerned by Salmons. If anything, I’m more concerned with his effort on the defensive end. He is slow, and guarding guys like Allen who come off multiple screens is going to be a struggle this year.

- and its not that Salmons can’t replace BG, or that they both slump. The Bulls played their best basketball WHEN THEY WERE BOTH ON THE TEAM. So when BG slumped, you could go to Salmons, and vice versa. That is why there is much pressure on Deng. He needs to be a guy who steps it up. Because if they both play like that, the Bulls have little chance of winning

2. The Bulls D on the wings really contributed to this. How may wide open looks did Allen and Pierce get? How many easy dunks did we give up. Celtics shot lights out, but the Bulls helped

3. Completely agree. I, for one, always thought this game had blowout potential. The Celtics have been starting every season really good over the last 3 years, the Bulls are just the opposite. The Celtics came ready to make a statement – unfortunately for them its only the 2nd game of the season so I doubt the Bulls got the statement. Hopefully, the team is just really pissed right now.

4. Noah and Tyrus both looked good, I agree. I don’t know how far the Bulls can get with the 2 of them playing together over the long haul, the offense can be really stagnant without a low post presence. But they were both active. I think VDN should have went with a Miller,Noah, Tyrus front line at some point. Do something to change the pace of the game.

As it is, if you told me the Bulls would be 1-1 after playing the Spurs and Celtics, I’d definitely take it and smile.

by Basketball Smurf on Oct 30, 2009 10:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Your point about BG and Salmons playing together

Gordon had about 18.5 scoring attempts last year at a .570 TS%. Let’s say we replace his 18.5 attempts this year at a .520 TS%. That’s only a 1.85ppg swing. I like to think that replacing Gordon/Salmons with Salmons/Deng defensively will make up most or all of that difference.

I don’t buy the “we would’ve always have a hot hand in BG or Salmons, and now we don’t”. I think the effect is smaller than it seems. Losing Gordon will raise the amount of stinker games we have, but it’s not like Luol or Kirk or Tyrus or Brad can’t score at all. It’s like replacing a .300 hitter with a .270 hitter in baseball. The .270 hitter looks a lot worse, but at the end of the day it’s just a .03 difference.

by YaoPau on Oct 30, 2009 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think basketball stats effectively demonstrate

how much Gordon will or won’t be missed. You just can’t say we are going to replace Gordon’s 18.5 pts and .570 TS% by this guy taking 1 more shot and this guy taking 2 more shots, and the defense moderately improving. I think its more complicated than that.

Gordon was the #1 option for the Bulls last year. That means, he (or Rose) were the first thing opposing defense sought to stop. His presence on the floor helped make up for VDN poor offensive sets, spread the floor for Rose and Salmons (and everyone else), and gave the Bulls a legit 3 pt assassin. Even if Gordon was having a bad game teams had to respect his 3pt shooting because he was an assassin. He was never left open. And to me this is the most important point – Gordon could score against the opposing teams toughest defenders, even when the other team was shading his way, even with big men running at him. He could score under the toughest of circumstances and do so with a high TS%. So at many points last season, even when he had an overall bad shooting night, Gordon managed to score enough in spurts to keep us in games.

Without BG, everyone’s job gets a little harder. The defense now shades to Salmons, he sees more help D and more double teams. At the end of last year, the Bulls were basically living off the offensive prowess of Gordon-Salmons-Rose. There were hardly ever offensive droughts – because if Salmons and Rose were struggling, you still had Gordon. Deng is not the as consistent a scorer as Gordon nor is he as explosive. He doesn’t spread the floor either, therefore Salmons and Rose have less room to go one on one. To replace the best player with an offensive player who is inferior to all 3 changes things a bit more than your stats would imply.

Can Rose, Deng or Salmons handle the same type of defensive pressure that Gordon faced? If they can’t, than there will be several times the Bulls go on droughts and cannot score. That is basically what happened tonight. Now, its hard to say Gordon would have definitely kept the Bulls close in the 2nd quarter – no one could possibly know that. But the fact is that he did keep us close in similar situations many times last season.

Whether the D has improved enough to force opposing teams into similar droughts or to make up for our own droughts remains to be seen. But I think it will have less to do with simply replacing Gordon with Deng, and more to do with our inside guys defending and defensive rebounding better (of course which Deng helps out with that, but much of the onus still falls on Tyrus, Miller and Noah).

I’m not ready to draw any conclusions from this game, I mean it was the Celtics. But the Bulls offense has historically struggled, and the only time over the last couple of years it has been even remotely decent was with Salmons and Gordon. The Bulls struggles from the 3 pt line as well as the inability of Rose and Salmons to get into the lane consistently was all predicted by people who were upset about Gordon leaving. It is too early to tell – still, the Bulls offense has looked rather pedestrian so far.

by Basketball Smurf on Oct 30, 2009 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions

About the end of last season

We had a ridiculously easy schedule. In the last 12 regular season games, the best team we played was the 43-39 Heat. The only top 10 defense we faced was the Bobcats’. We put up some big point totals vs. the Celtics, but we also played 7 OT in that series, and it was a Boston team without KG. Per48 in that series, we only averaged 98 points, four less than our season average of 102.2ppg. So how good we really were offensively, it’s hard to say.

As for Gordon’s value being represented in stats, I think it can be, mostly because he didn’t pass. It’s the Amare’s-low-offensive-APM reasoning: sure Amare draws double teams, but he doesn’t pass to exploit them, so nearly all his offensive value comes from his TS%.

And were teams really shading Gordon last year? With Salmons and Rose both on the floor? I remember that happening a bit on end of game possessions, but the other 99% of the time I don’t remember it. Teams shade guys who can drive, not jumpshooters, especially when that would’ve left Rose/Salmons open.

This year I think teams would be smart to leave Deng open to shade Rose/Salmons, but I haven’t seen that happen, and given Deng’s reputation as a decent player, I doubt that issue comes up.

by YaoPau on Oct 31, 2009 12:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Gordon got to the free throw line more than Rose last season

so I don’t buy your jumpshooter tag. And yes, teams were really shading Gordon last year. He has been getting double teams since his rookie season. Gordon is one of the best one on one players in the NBA. Are you really claiming no one was helping when he was isolated?

And please continue to ignore the fact that Gordon has a higher assist percentage than Deng and Salmons over the last several seasons. Don’t let the “don’t pass” myth die. No matter how many times its disproven.

And I don’t know why you would only talk about the last 12 games of the season when Salmons and Miller played 26 games for the Bulls – a third of the season – which included wins over Boston, Orlando, New Orleans, Houston and a close loss to LA where we led by 14 pts at halftime and scored 109 pts. Add in the Boston series plus the evidence that the Bulls struggled to beat teams like Miami, Charlotte, Detroit and Philly throughout the beginning of last season, than swept those teams at the end of the season and I think there is ample evidence the Bulls were a much better offensive team (and overall) with the Gordon/Salmons duo on the wings. I don’t know how you could really even dispute that. I’m not saying they were a great offensive team. But they were no longer terrible.

The Bulls offense could improve or stay the same. I’m not saying its impossible. But I don’t think its simply a matter of plugging Deng in for Gordon and having every other guy play a little better. The Bulls need to get big improvements from Rose, Tyrus and Noah and VDN needs to install a better offensive system to make up for the fact that this team only has 2 high level offensive players and only 1 guy capable of taking over a game. They need someone to step up and be a focal point, a pressure valve when things get tough. That guy should be Rose. Though the better teams (and the Bulls last season) have more than 1 guy capable of doing that.

Last Gordon post - I SWEAR

When Gordon scored in the shot clock -

0-10secs attempts 45% efg% .566 assisted 46% pts 8.2

Rose

0-10secs attempts 42% efg% .483 assisted34% pts 6.1

Salmons

0-10 attempts 36% efg% .552 assisted 61% pts 5.3

Deng

0-10secs attempts 39% efg% .555 assisted 63% pts 5.2

Gordon scored most of his points with the shot clock running down. He had the highest efg% of any Bulls player with the clock winding down and he created that shot for himself 15% more than Salmons and 17% more than Deng. A team that struggles to score will naturally miss any player who can create his own shot with the shot clock winding down and is able to do so, so effectively. That burden now completely falls on Rose. Its a lot to handle.

Hey, I feel better already! Nice post Yao

Noah really does look fantastic and I am not worried about Salmons yet. I just can’t get away from the Rose thing though. It just freaks me out a little because the future is so wrapped up with how this guy performs. And I know he’s not gonna suck or anything, I’m not saying that, but I’m beginning to get legitimately concerned that he’s not gonna be “the guy” on a truly great team. And not just because this game, but the whole body of work,

thanks for posting this

it was my suspicion that it was just a bad confluence of the Bulls being cold while the Celtics were ridiculously hot. Nice to see the numbers support.

Chances are that Gordon was seeing some double teams and extra pressure that Salmons is not.

But your point is a good one. Gordon went through slumps too. He usually started the season off pretty slowly. But that may have had something to do with the coaches messing with his minutes.

He seems to be off to a decent start this season in Detroit though.

GTFO.

1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box

I think Cleveland will be good, and Lebron is always tough in a 7 game series

but that roster they have is bunk. I mean comparing it to the Bulls roster

Rose>Williams
Salmons>Parker
Deng<<<<<<<<Shaq (this season)

Hinrich>Boobie
Miller>=Big Z
Taj=Moon

And I honestly think I’m being generous with some of the =‘s. Lebron is the only guy on that roster who can play at a high level, only guy capable of being a main cog on a championship team. Against other good teams, Lebron alone isn’t enough. Its like the Cavs paid no attention to the Jordan era – get Lebron another star player to set the offense – or don’t. As a Bulls fan I appreciate the suck.

I screwed that up, somehow

Rose>Mo
Salmons>Parker
Deng<<<<<<<<<Lebron
Tyrus=Varejao (and I’m being generous to Varejao)
Noah>Shaq (this season)

LeBron

Will never win anything with Shaq. Bad move by Cleveland management, Shaq is a clown. It’s gonna take some more serious moves if they ever want to get Lebron any help.

Klickety klack...

Was that KG’s knee giving out I just heard? No? Wait 25-45 games in and let’s see who will be mourning the loss of their star player come post season.

I just saw that Brandon Jennings had a line of 17 pts. 9 asst. and 9 reb. in his deabut

In relation to the Bulls I think this could be a very good thing. We’ve all noticed how much Derrick likes to defer to veterans and constantly trips over himself to compliment other great players around the league that are his elders. But I wonder what will happen when he starts to see young guns like Jennings and perhaps John Wall next year coming in and tearing up the league?

I would have to think that if he is a competitor at all this will really fuel his fire. Last year when we played OKC and R. Westbrook, he had one of his best games. This was around the time that people were beginning to consider Westbrook as a ROY candidate. Perhaps a few young guys coming up and stealing his spotlight is exactly what he needs to take his game to the next level.

Rando had like 16 assists? Damn.

I didn’t think Boston would miss a shot. I thought it was great how the refs just swallowed the whistles but still that was a beat down.

I've got this thing and it's fucking golden!

Look on the bright side

At least we scored 90. Celtic’s last opponent, Bobcats only scored 59 points.
