Watching Derrick mature does anyone else see the Dwayne Wade in him coming out?

He just abuses one of the fastest guys in the NBA in TJ Ford. TJ isn’t a stellar defender, but he should be able to keep Derrick in front of him. Rose is blowing by him without a screen or a hint of one.

Without Ben Gordon he may end playing more like a ball control SG this year. When defenders know that he can attack the rim they’re not sure how to defend him once he gets into the paint. He can either attack, pass, pull up, or just dribble out.

ridiculous.

1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box

Yeah for sure

I’ve always seen him as comparable to D Wade with that extra gear of speed and the way he attacks.

I think his speed and ability to get up shots

are going to put him at the FT line somewhere around 8 times per game. He’s too fast with the basketball and developing that pull up is going to force his man to run into him.

Ummm....
isn’t a stellar defender, but he should be able to keep Derrick in front of him.

a) the latter is kind of one of the biggest points of perimeter defense. If Ford were able to keep Rose in front of him, Ford would be able to do something very few defenders in the NBA can do. Thus, he’d be a stellar defender.

b) One should never equate or even strongly correlate* first-step and dribbling offensive speed with lateral and backwards defending speed. The former goes forward w/ angles forward, the latter goes sideways w/ angles backward. It’s a nearly-entirely different set of athletic ability.

*well, you could if you’re talking the general population, even of the NBA. The TJ Fords and Derrick Roses are going to be better at perimeter defense than the Brad Millers and Aaron Grays. I’m writing relative to other perimeter defenders.

Are you Rose’s cousin or a girlfriend or somebody?

He took a three pointer last night... he was wide open. missed

but it was a good shot. I’d rather see him practice those now in the preseason because everyone knows he can get to the hoop at will. I want him to be more selfish and he was when the Pacers made their run. Derrick stopped that. his jumper is looking better as well and he knocked a few down with dudes in his face. This is going to be a fun season.

I've got this thing and it's fucking golden!

I concur.

Unless he’s just an unbelievable passer and horrid shooter like Jason Kidd (before he went to the Mavs and was able to become 2nd and 3rd fiddle and only shooting when wide open), I don’t want my PG passing up open 3’s.

Thinking back to last season

Rose came out like 20 6 and 6 then got slowed down. Not sure maybe a combination of defenses adjusting and Vinny trying to out think other coaches. (and of course Rose being a rookie)

I missed the game but I like how solid he looked here. His numbers to me won’t be that telling he’s a classic facilitator to me. If he averages 20-6-6 for this up coming season it’d be more productive than most because he lets guys play and get into a rhythm. Of course when he needs to he’ll take over.

by Camry on Oct 3, 2009 6:23 PM CDT reply actions

It was like Mid November

He had 19 6-6 I remember people talking about all the rookies who had averaged that. Then he had a number of low rebounding games in a row.

If he really wants to take his game to another level

he’s gonna have to become a more aggressive and willing scorer which will include hitting more threes and getting to the line more. Or he’ll have to seriously increase his assist totals. The 6.2 per game he averaged last year wasn’t horrible, but if you consider how much he played it was definitely below average (as has been mentioned on here before). Hopefully he can put it all together and just be amazing for the next 10 years:)

He could stand to be more aggressive

but I think he definitely should have had more FT attempts last year. They were simply not giving him calls on a lot of his drives. Hopefully he will get more calls this year since he’s no longer a rookie.

Yeah, I am going to be watching how the refs treat him this year.

Last year is was getting ridiculous (and dangerous). When your body gets the beating it does when you are a player like Rose you’d think there would be some payoff at the line. He earned a lot more than he got last year.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

by cranscape on Oct 3, 2009 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Yea, hopefully he'll just get more calls

but another thing is he needs to become a bit better of an actor. All the great ones (and god can it get annoying at times) are fantastic at screaming, yelling, flopping, basically doing whatever they have to do to get to the line.

That's a good point

I think part of it is that he’s so strong and has such good body control that he’s usually able to absorb the hit and still finish.

Rose paid his dues and will get all the calls the refs wouldn’t give last year. He should be shooting at least 8 FTs game minimum if not more.
