wow, that's a surprise

the Thunder actually spending some money.

Thabo gets an extension before Tyrus.

Clay Bennett must’ve liquidated some extra wine this week.

We believe Thabo’s best basketball is ahead of him

Sure hope so, because if it is for service rendered…

Thabo is a good player that only needed someone to show him the love

I’m in agreement …“Thabo’s best basketball is ahead of him”

Bull’s management have no love to give, because it’s all spent on Kirk and Deng. (I’m not just speaking in terms of $$)

Tyrus, isn’t expecting any love from the Bulls organization, his one short term goal is to increase his market value and move on away from this org, everything else with him is secondary.

I look forward to hearing him speak out once he leaves the organization. He’s a smart guy he’ll be very professional yet I believe he’ll tell much.

I was glad to see him gone.

If he was going to need “starter juice” in order to even be semi-competent we were not the team to waste the SG spot on him. Let a team with no immediate aspirations have that job. Even that said, we tried to start him last season and after 5-6 games it wasn’t working and they threw Kirk at the problem. I am glad I don’t have to see that experiment or his flat shot in Chicago anymore. With how our organization works Thabo would have been used as punishment for whenever the current starting SG messes up. This team can’t help but experiment from time to time after all. (see Tyrus/Taj) I can only stand so many of that type on a team.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

thabo just had no place on the team anymore

but i’m glad we sent him to a place where he could get an opportunity to play (and earn an extension) rather than some place he’d just be sitting on the bench the way he would have in chicago.

and should i mention

on a team that is probably better suited. playing with KD and westbrook is a good fit for him i think.

Good for him. Thabo is a serviceable backup SG. Probably 4years/12-16 mill.

by C Smoove on Oct 28, 2009 7:17 PM CDT reply actions

Durant is a SF not a SG. PJ tried that and it failed miserably.

by C Smoove on Oct 29, 2009 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Could you imagine ..

A GM who was good enough to position and sign Kirk to 4/16 and Deng to 4/20. Really both are serviceable backups at PG/SG and SF forward positions, and near starters such as Thabo. Then, Gordon would have gladly signed for 5/33, feeling the love.

All Paxson had to do was get a decent SF like Salmons years back, for cheap and the wimpy Deng would have shown how weak he was before Paxson envisioned postioned him as a star without needing to earn his position. We all know Noc beat Deng in every category until the time Noc went down with the serious injury and Deng starting stuff his stats, but not really winning games.

Not a Deng fan, but Deng is much better than Nocioni.

This is a surprise...

Thabo is fourth player from his draft class to sign an extension (after the #1 pick, #2 pick and the #6 pick)…not bad for a guy selected outside of the lottery.

Hollinger follow-up

Smart to extend Thabo now to reduce cap hold next offseason.

I guess.

That makes way too

much sense for the Bulls front office to figure out. They’re creating cap space next season. The Bulls would rather renounce useful assets, or let other teams sign them.

by kingj41 on Oct 29, 2009 8:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Bulls are in a different situation

Thunder has max cap space and then some, so they can make an early decision on Thabo. Bulls only have one shot at a great player, and if they have to renounce Tyrus they’ll do it, but only at the last second necessary. Otherwise there’s little harm in having him with the cap hold.

I'm not keying in on the signing

as making sense. Just that they are planning for the future. Are the Bulls waiting on Tyrus to become a contributing player or his contract to expire? And with BG? What was the plan there? The Thunder are setting themselves up to have more options than the ‘uh-oh, we gotta do something’ approach the Bulls take. That leaves the Bulls making horrible decisions…

I guess I'm not getting this one. Let's take a look at the Thunder's roster

PG/SG- Russell Westbrook. Clearly gonna be a big minute player, but maybe as a PG. Still seems like a combo guard to me though.
SG- James Harden. Clearly gonna be a big minute player.
SF- Kevin Durant. Clearly a big minute player
SF/PF- Jeff Green. Pretty good player, more a 3 than a 4.

Anyway, my point is that if you go through their options on the wings, there’s really, at best, about 12 minutes a game you’d want Thabo playing. Does it make sense to be locking in a guy at any sort of price to play 12 minutes a game?

by Sports2 on Oct 29, 2009 4:30 PM CDT reply actions

thabo haters

defense is half the game. the zombie sonics, in a pg draft, chose harden. so it would seem they consider westbrook their pg. and on a team where durant will necessarily dominate the ball, i can see it too. he did have 13 assists last night.

but durant’s not very defensive minded, and if they’re ever to make the playoffs, they have to follow someone’s defensive lead. last year, that was thabo, who looked like a vet leader with all the extreme youth there. he got 34 mins last night, and durant, westbrook, and green got theirs too. (well harden only played 13, but so did k. ollie. the minutes are there.) plus they can afford to pay him.

i see a bigger problem with acquiring their final piece, because as you state, green isn’t a pf. so as they are, it would need to be a top rebounding and defending 5. one with more of an offensive game than ty chandler, hopefully. not easy to come by!

the name of the team is The DIAMONDBACKS

Marc Stein posted the contract numbers

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/10166/the-figures-on-sefoloshas-extension

*$3 million in 2010-11

*$3.3 million in 2011-12

*$3.6 million in 2012-13

*$3.9 million in 2013-14

12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

by NBA Observer on Oct 29, 2009 6:34 PM CDT reply actions

So 4 years - 13.8 million dollars

At those numbers, that is a pretty good deal for OKC. About 3.5 million a year for a guy who has the potential to improve, but even if he doesn’t, will still be a fair price at that salary.

by Basketball Smurf on Oct 29, 2009 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions

3.5 mill a year for a backup swing man who can rebound and defend and even handle the ball pretty well is an excellent deal. His agent didn’t even really try for more cash.

by C Smoove on Nov 1, 2009 12:26 PM CST up reply actions

Harden and Sefo will split time and Thabo can back up the 3 as well. There are plenty of minutes. I expect Thabo to play 18 minutes at the 2 and like 5 at the 3.
