"I do like playing Jo or Brad (Miller) with Taj (Gibson) and Tyrus," Del Negro said. "It gives us a lot of length. That should help us control the glass. I can play John at the off guard or even Luol, which gives us even more size." VDN

I wouldn't mind seeing some lineups with Noah, Taj, Tyrus, Salmons and Rose at all. I'm glad Vinny likes the idea as well. Of course it's not the greatest scoring threat but damn thats pretty athletic. I also think.. no disrespect to JJ, Brad or Deng.. well maybe to Deng, that might be your best 5 players on the floor.

I'd like to see some of these lineups as well.

Props to Vinny for thinking outside the box a bit. I hope to see some Rose/Salmons/Tyrus/Noah/Miller lineups. That could be a pretty damn fine defensive lineup and could be competent on offense since Miller/Salmons can space the floor and Rose can get in the lane. Interested to see where this idea goes.

Oops, I read the quote wrong.

Taj and Tyrus at the same time with Noah or Miller? No thanks. Miller/Noah/Tyrus? Yes please.

A Tyrus/Taj/Noah frontcourt would pretty much make no sense.

by Illini15 on Oct 28, 2009 12:50 AM CDT up reply actions

See I love that lineup!(Rose,Salmons,Tyrus, Taj, Noah)

I mean it gives you plenty of options..

Mainly because I think Tyrus is a 3. This gives Tyrus the freedom that he needs. He can be used as kinda like the X-factor player that he is. He doesn’t have to worry about rebounding he can just worry mostly about blocking shots, tip dunks, lob passes and even allow him to either drive to the basket or hit the open 15 footer which he isn’t that bad at.

Taj has show consistency at the pick and pop. So I like him at the 4 setting picks for Rose . The can play off each other.

Noah can do what he does and scrap under the basket for tips and just be that anchor.

Also Salmons can be freed to iso plays which is what he seems to excel at.. then you have 3 really athletic guys crashing the boards when Salmons is doing his jiggy thingy.

I know offensively it might have some holes, three point shooting would lack but defensively I love the idea. Specially against the top teams like the Lakers, Celtics, and Cavs. I think Tyrus can guard Lebron some.

I've got this thing and it's fucking golden!

Don't like any tinkering

this is pretty set, no?

I do like that there’s a recognition that defensive rebounding is a problem, though Deng is pretty good in that area at his position too.

I hate Tyrus at the 3. It takes away all of his strengths and what makes him uniquely effective.

I don't know I think Taj can block shots and hold his own..

I don’t think it makes Tyrus that ineffective he can still come in and make weak side blocks. He can also get out and run with Derrick on breaks for lobs or follow dunks and not have to be rebounding or bodied up by bigger power forwards. he hasn’t gotten any bigger frame wise.

I’ve always thought of him as more of a 3 and even he thinks he’s a 3. I don’t think it should be the starting lineup or anything but more of a long defensive lineup.

Who knows maybe it would suck and my theory is whack but it interests me and I like that Vinny brought that up atleast… saying Tyrus.. in.. the rotation! ha

I've got this thing and it's fucking golden!

by SoulEater7 on Oct 28, 2009 1:39 AM CDT up reply actions

You always thought of Tyrus as a 3?

So that means you consider his talent of dribbling and passing, and shooting off the dribble like Caron Butler, or Shawn Marion, Carmelo Anthony, Josh Howard or a Hedu Turkoglu. Dr. J, Larry Bird, James Worthy, these are legit small forwards, Tyrus game is nothing like them! Tyrus game is blocking shots, finishing plays, hitting open shots, attacking the rim from a reasonable distance away. Tyrus is no way a small forward and he doesn’t have the skill set to play this and he will struggle even defensively!

When's the last time Deng HAS been good at that?

I like Tyrus at the 3 where the matchups work

I’d put Tyrus on many of the better threes in the East: Pierce, Jamison/Butler, James, Prince, Wallace. I want to give him defensive challenges to get him angry and good.

12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

You do realize

he’ll be in foul trouble immediately against any of those players…

Tyrus cannot defend a NBA small forward the whole game

All of these guys you listed are gonna give Tyrus fits, Tyrus isn’t a small forward at all!

by Mr Rhythm on Oct 29, 2009 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep. Besides,

Are we sure Tyrus is a better defensive rebounder than Deng? Per 36, Deng gets about 4.5 drpg career while Tyrus gets 6.0. Put Tyrus at SF, and he might not top 4.5 drpg.

Another comparison… DRB% last year: James Johnson: 19.2% playing SF/PF … Taj Gibson: 19.2% playing PF/C. Yet VDN is moving Tyrus and Deng out of position to give Taj playing time in order to “control the glass”.

by YaoPau on Oct 28, 2009 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd give up the 'why not James Johnson'? hope

I don’t see Vinny trusting him at all. Taj is perfect coaches pet material, even though he turns over the ball like crazy himself. But that’s not because of immaturity, it’s because of bad hands, so it’s ok.

technically....

…putting the “g” at the end of “drpg” after you say “per 36” is just incorrect and contradictory

Deng is a better defensive rebounder than Tyrus.

by C Smoove on Oct 28, 2009 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions

This is exactly what I was arguing in the last pre season game

Vinny has takent Tyrus away from the post (on defense) away from being a better rebounder, away from possibly blocking shots, the jump shots al of you guys hate, are now gonna have Tyrus taking them more steadily, this move is good for Taj and bad for Tyrus!

by Mr Rhythm on Oct 29, 2009 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions

am i getting the quote right

did he say he wants to play deng as a guard?

by sin on Oct 28, 2009 4:10 AM CDT reply actions

the off guard yes.

I've got this thing and it's fucking golden!

by SoulEater7 on Oct 28, 2009 9:31 AM CDT up reply actions

That has never worked well

Deng has mediocre ballhandling skills for a small forward. Putting him at the 2 just accentuates that weakness.

by Big D on Oct 28, 2009 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions

that and he can't shoot 3s.

Or defend quick guards.

I actually wouldn’t mind seeing Rose/Salmons/Thomas/Noah/Miller for like 10 minutes a game as an experiment. I still think Tyrus is best served mostly at the 4…but I actually like that lineup to be used sparingly. Lots of length, athleticism and a big that can shoot on the floor. Maybe they could play this during the 3rd quarter right after halftime.
