Matt McHale believes in Salmons
He makes some good points here, but he also makes some points that I thought were pretty asinine, which I pointed out in the comments on that page... curious to see what BaBers think.

I get how it works for this season
but for actual team-building, I still think it stinks. Salmons is 3.5 years older. And we should be exited to give him a ‘fat contract’ if he opts out after this season?
Plus, I don’t buy that Salmons is only effective if he plays and shoots a lot, so therefore he had to be given that role once acquired. I could ‘believe in him’ as a 6th man, too.

The Bulls did a decent job replacing Ben Gordon.
John Salmons isn’t on the same level as Ben Gordon, but he’s a good player. The Bulls did a good job replacing Ben Gordon at the shooting guards spot for THIS YEAR.
The problem of course, is that they did a bad job replacing John Salmons at the small forward spot.

blech, no.
Deng, if he gets back, is a far better SF than Salmons. I may need to make a public statement to distance myself from all the Deng criticism here.
Anyway, the Bulls could’ve done an even better job by just not ‘replacing’ anybody, but supplementing. Like real big-time teams do.

my big problem with salmons
is i think hes too slow to be a SG and too bad a rebounder for a SF; which is kinda why I think he’d make a great 6th man, but alas, as mchale proved, he hasn’t been real effective coming off the bench.

this is the most important thing:
Anyway, the Bulls could’ve done an even better job by just not ‘replacing’ anybody, but supplementing. Like real big-time teams do.
If the Bulls had brought back BG, they’d have a real chance at being a 50-55 win team. They’d also have an additional asset to make a deadline deal for someone like Bosh, or have players for a sign and trade in the offseason.
1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box

Amen brother.
I guess that “amen” also goes to yfBB for that original comment, because that was on the money too. I’m interested to see how this season plays out…

Less than a year-and-a-half of Salmons?
Yep, sounds like typical Bulls “long-term planning” that McHale talked about. Sweeeeet.

They had us duped all along.
After Salmons leaves, Hinrich will be the starting SG. It’s not Hinrich’s job that was in jeopardy when they drafted Rose; it was Gordon’s! Aaaaack!!!

The big hole is with Salmons at the SG
will anyone other than Rose draw a double team?
Salmons did have good numbers in Sacramento playing for a bad team. Did he ever have to work to stop anyone? It was score more than your opponent in the Wild West. The outcome was few victories.
I do think Salmons can put up similar numbers to his last 18 months. I just don’t know how the other four players will produce while he is out there.

The other 4 players
produced fine last season. Why act like we didn’t witness half a season of Salmons with the Bulls that worked out fine.

Ben Gordon was one of those 4
And he drew a lot of defensive attention. Move Salmons to the 2 and cycle Deng back to the 3 and neither of them draws a lot of defensive attention.
