well
A source close to the Chicago Bulls organization told us yesterday it looks like the Bulls will not extend Tyrus Thomas before the Oct. 31 deadline
This isn’t news, they haven’t even discussed an extension.
and I assume he also meant they will let him walk next off season when he becomes a restricted free agent.
And that’s just speculation.

The source is not that much reliable
But maybe they didn’t discussed an extension because they don’t want to (I don’t know, this is just me also speculating)
Jannero Pargo = Larry Hughes 2.0
they don't want to extend him now
but the decision to extend him after the season relies on many factors yet to be determined.

But won't there be a cap hold on the Bulls payroll? They'll still own his rights
I thought they had to renounce his rights to remove the cap hold (which would mean he wouldn’t be back). And obviously they’re going to need all the cap room they can get to attract a max free agent.
There will be a huge cap hold...
…They would only need to renounce his rights if a big signing were imminent…they would have to verbally agree with the max free agent, then renounce Tyrus, then sign said free agent…

or maybe they just haven't decided on what they want to do with him yet
It would be different if he was going to be an unrestricted free agent

I am somewhat surprised
I would think it would make good sense to at least put an offer out there on the table, the way they have done with every other first round pick of the Paxson era…
I guess at this point it would be pretty challenging to determine Tyrus’ market value, as he has been inconsistent during his time with the Bulls…maybe they are giving him an opportunity to earn a payday along the lines of what Aldridge and Bargnani received…

The Bulls don’t want to give Tyrus the 10-13 mill that Bargnani and Alridge have gotten….nor he has really earned it either.
A fair offer is like 7-8 mill as of his current production and possible potential.
I don't think he's even worth that right now
Even putting aside the salary cap ramifications, I wouldn’t have given him an extension either. Let’s see if he has a breakout year. If he does, then you gladly give him a big contract. If he doesn’t, he’s worth the midlevel at best.
If he can't improve his defensive rebounding and play more within the team concept
I really don’t think he should be extended anyway
