The first month.
Maybe I'm crazy or just pessimistic about the season but going over the Bull's schedule in November makes me sick:
| Regular Season Schedule/Results | |||
| OCTOBER | OPPONENT | TIME (ET) | |
| Thu, Oct 29 | San Antonio | 8:00 PM | LOSS |
| Fri, Oct 30 | @ Boston | 8:00 PM | LOSS |
| NOVEMBER | OPPONENT | TIME (ET) | |
| Sun, Nov 1 | @ Miami | 6:00 PM | LOSS |
| Tue, Nov 3 | Milwaukee | 8:00 PM | WIN |
| Thu, Nov 5 | @ Cleveland | 8:00 PM | LOSS |
| Sat, Nov 7 | Charlotte | 8:00 PM | WIN |
| Tue, Nov 10 | Denver | 8:00 PM | LOSS |
| Wed, Nov 11 | @ Toronto | 7:00 PM | WIN |
| Sat, Nov 14 | Philadelphia | 8:00 PM | LOSS |
| Tue, Nov 17 | @ Sacramento | 10:00 PM | WIN |
| Thu, Nov 19 | @ LA Lakers | 10:30 PM | LOSS |
| Sat, Nov 21 | @ Denver | 9:00 PM | LOSS |
| Mon, Nov 23 | @ Portland | 10:00 PM | LOSS |
| Thu, Nov 26 | @ Utah | 10:30 PM | LOSS |
| Mon, Nov 30 | @ Milwaukee | 8:00 PM | WIN |
The only games I wavered on was against Toronto and Philly which I can see going either way. Am I crazy to think the rest of these games(barring any injuries or trades) are easy to predict? It's going to be a long year if we start out 4 and 11, although It would be less painful if our young core(that matters) of Rose, Tyrus and Noah get 35 or more minutes a game. But it's looking more like we'll be heading into December with a crappy record and a pissed-off/pouting Tyrus. I just pray that this leads to the usual firing of a Bull's coach by Christmas Eve.

Damn.
Good post. So one month from now, VDN will be on the hot seat, Taj or Tyrus (whoever starts) will lose minutes, Wayne Winston will tell Truehoop “I told you so!”, and it’ll be up to VDN to keep the rotation tight. I’m bracing myself.

recced for sarcasm
Nothing I posted was meant to be ground-breaking, but I’ll try to keep the obvious posts to myself.

I mean, there's some sarcasm in that
but for the most part I agree with you. The season will start off rough, and those that expected a top-5 seed will be pointing fingers. And I wasn’t kidding about Wayne Winston.

We can beat Miami and Utah and Philly and can steal a few games against the actual good teams. It’s gonna be rough for sure, but yer outlook may be overly pessimistic.

I hope you're right
I can definitely see us beating Miami and Philly but Utah won’t have any troubles against us. If they were in the east, they’d be a lock for the 4th seed.

The Bulls have matched up pretty well against Utah since the arrival of Rose.

I guess that's true.
but in Utah after a tough schedule to start the season, I’d still say we’re only at about a 40%ish chance of winning that game. It definitely would not put it in the automatic win column. Maybe there should be a “toss up” column on there?
by 72-10 on Oct 24, 2009 10:00 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
there should be a toss up column, and I think there are several games
that would fall into that category.
1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box
by fundamentallysound on Oct 24, 2009 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
looking through it the "Losses" I think the Bulls have at least a 50-50 shot of winning are:
Miami, Philadelphia, Denver (at least one of the games, probably at home), and Utah. If they go .500 in those games and win the 4 that were originally predicted for them and maybe steal one from one of the teams they have no business beating (SA, Cleveland, Boston, Lakers, Portland) then that would put them at 7-8 after a pretty brutal first month. I can definitely live with that. Even 6-9 would be pretty good. That’s pretty much my bench mark, anything above 6-9 and we’re looking to be in good shape for the year, and below that is probably not very good.

2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box

glad you wrote that
I was about to point all that out, though I wasn’t going to give the Bull’s Utah…. so he has them going 5-10. I have them at 7-8…. I actually don’t think that’s all that bad.
by 72-10 on Oct 23, 2009 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Miami is a toss up game too but i think the bulls can win at least 2 games against the good teams on the schedule. Like we go 1-1 against denver then steal one against a tired Utah team maybe. I see 7-8 wins there.

If they start Taj
this really goes off the rails for the first couple weeks. The rotation will be a mess*, Tyrus will be peeved, and they’re facing good teams. I’m really really really scared about that.
*(some adjustments are fine at the beginning of an NBA season, but I really think starting Taj has a cascading effect. Quick question: does Miller still come off the bench first? Then Hinrich? Tyrus is now the 8th man?)

"This" team hasn't proven it - there's been plenty of turnover since 07/08
Plus, really, any team can quit on any coach. I don’t think what happened in 07/08 makes it any more or less likely that “this” team of guys quits or does not quit on Vinny.

If Taj is the starter during this stretch, I don’t see how we beat any team outside of Sacramento especially with Rose not 100%. But again, on a positive note this would seal Vinny’s fate.

I don't think firing Vinny would be a positive

T. Parker, Mason, Rich Jefferson, McDyess, Duncan with Ginobilli off the bench…

yeah, but they made a mistake not trading up to get Taj in the draft
that is going to haunt them BIG TIME, starting October 29. Taj is kind of like michael Jordan, he never forgets a slight.

God, Blair would destroy him. You could get to see Paxson’s face drops as he watches! :)

That's OK
when Taj is totally out of the league in 5 years we can debate who had the better career: the guy who had to retire due to injuries or the guy who sucks.
I also love that Blair has to get the minutes, while Taj apparently is entitled to them because he posted an average of 14 and 7 per 48 or something … in the preseason.

That's actually not that scary
and certainly not unbeatable.
Ginobli is not the same person anymore, neither is McDyess. Jefferson always kills us, and Duncan picks his spots a lot more than he used to. We’ll get to test whether Rose’s defense is better or whether quick guards like Parker are still going to kill us this year. Mason is an average player.
by runningman on Oct 24, 2009 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
even if that was all true
they are still many levels better than the Bull’s counterparts. Mason may be average as an individual but on a team with a good coach that has a good defensive and offensive scheme it makes him much more than average.
by diedaily23 on Oct 27, 2009 8:38 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Is this a good time to say
“I told you so”? McDyess looked old, Ginobli had a couple of drives and that’s it. Jefferson played okay, but didn’t know where to be. Duncan was great, but since he didn’t decided to take over offensively, his damage was minimized. Rose’s defense was better and I didn’t see any glaring perimeter holes. We went from two last year with Rose and Gordon to possibly none this year.
If Mason was in the game, I didn’t notice it. I just looked it up and he was 0-4 in 18 minutes.

And we beat the Spurs on opening night. Book it.

this was already covered
the day the schedule was announced (sorry, but i’m too lazy too look up and link…).
it was said then that anything better than 5-10 would be a surprise. so patience will be needed here at B-A-B, but more importantly, with the team’s own psyche after what figures to be a rough start the first month.
i’d be very happy with your 7-8, people!

I mentioned it above, 6-9 is the benchmark. If they hit that, this team is going places
(like a 5 or 6 seed), if not then they are probably going to be fringe playoff / lotto team.

Why are we so much better than the 76ers? They actually have a post player and the best player out of the two teams. I think a lot of philly fans would mark the bulls as a sure win..

You seem to have a problem with
overestimating every other team’s lineup and underestimating the Bulls. I’ll be back in this thread in a month to compare results.
Elton Brand is not what he was, by the way. He came into the league in 1999 and is on the downslope of his career.

He definitely is a shell of what he used to be. But he still has a presence in the post. Watching Noah this year, I have hope that the Bulls will have someone to throw it to down low.

If they lose an early game to Milwaukee or Charlotte, things could really start to fall apart. Besides, you know Vinny will make some stupid lineup change if they get off to a bad start (because at that point, people will be asking questions about his own job security and he’ll be desperate).

board is way too pessimistic right now.
The Bulls are healthy.
Everyone important has played together.
We lost Gordon (huge on offense) but it will help our defense and we added Deng.
Taj is a nice addition to not only keep Tyrus more motivated but also play solid bball at the PF.
Rose has a nice playoff and olympic experience under his belt.
Vinny isnt a rookie anymore.
Noah looks to have picked right up from his playoff run.
Salmons is a really good stop gap system scorer and garbage scorer when the system breaks down.
The bench of Hinrich, Miller, Taj, JJ and Pargo is among the top 5 (or higher) in th eleague.
Preseason went well!!
This team will win 1 of the 3 losses the OP starts the season out with. SA, Boston, heat. we will win at least one of those games.
we will get another win out of cleveland, denver Philly.
Then at DEnver, Lakers, Utah, and Portland we win 1 more.
We will prolly lose 1 or 2 of the wins the OP has us down for but will make up for it with a surprise win or 2.
8-7 BOOK IT.
This team, in my opinion is a lock for a top 6th seed…and could magically find itself as high as a 3 seed if we dont start out too slowly, stay healthy, and 1 of the top 3 teams suffers a major injury or in Boston’s case, grows old as fast as TO did.
I think 4 seed is likely, and 3 seed is a logshot but possible.
by SD20 on Oct 28, 2009 5:44 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
3 and 4 seed are a longshot. I’m not a team basher but a realist. I really don’t see us ahead of the Cavs, Magic or Celts…those are the ELITE teams. Maybe we sneak into 4th ahead of ATL or Washington.

out of the remaining 7 games for this month
Bulls should be able to go 4-3.
8-7 would be a good start to the season…especially since rose should be playing better in a month as well as Hinrich and salmons.
Gibson should have his rookie feet fully wet by then as well and myabe tyrus comes back and contributes off the bench.
I can see the Bulls going 8-10 games over .500 for the remaining games after this month after a 8-7 or minimally a 7-8 start to finish with 45-48 wins.
And if the defense stays where it is as well as Noah and Gigson improve game by game this could get really interesting if our guards start playing to their capabilities.
