Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

One year from now which starter will be getting benched?

Consider this post a sequel to my previous post from the summer, "the life cycle of a Bulls draft pick."

Something just occurred to me with Tyrus benched for Taj fiasco, which eerily resembles the BG getting benched for Thabo scenario last year (other than the fact that this is the second year in the row this sort of thing is happening).

Star-divide

This Taj over Tyrus thing seems to be the standard process for what the Bulls FO does when one of their draft picks is up for re-signing and they don't want to pay him. Easier to start smearing him through leaks to the media and b**** moves like these, then to simply admit that they are cheap and they won't pay up. The overwhelming response to Taj proves that the Bulls have brilliantly pulled off a shrewd move in replacing a more expensive top 5 draft pick with a late first round draft pick. They should only hope that when it comes time to replace the late first round draft pick on the conveyor belt of rotating draft picks, they can score with a mid second round draft pick as his replacement, to save even more money.

As I stated, it happened with BG last year with the Thabo stunt to start off the first 7 games last season, it's happening with Tyrus this year, and frankly, I suspect it may happen with Noah next year.

Can you picture next year? I am dead serious when I predict that Omer Asik will be starting over Noah next year on opening night, after a "surprisingly solid preseason," and just like this incident, the media will be lapping it up and Bulls fans who can't see through the charade will be criticizing Noah and saying it's perfectly all right that Omer start. And oh wait, Noah's in his contract year too! (presume they can't work out an extension with him in the offseason because they strike out in 2010 and want to keep salary low for 2011).

Then what? Will Rose be next in '11-'12, with some scrubby PG we drafted that year coming in to start over him on opening night?

Where does it end with this team?

Maybe Salmons?

he’ll pick up that player option, peeving the higher ups.

Though the more I (actually) think about things, it’s far more likely that VDN just doesn’t like Tyrus, not some organizational conspiracy. A conspiracy implies that the Org. actually has a plan. The Jim Bo#*#@ era made that premise impossible.

I think the organization has given VDN pretty much free reign

Obviously the organization is going to like Taj and JJ – they picked them. So they are going to believe they can contribute on some level until proven otherwise. In regards to Tyrus, I don’t think the organization has given VDN any directives. Which depending on your point of view, could be a bad thing.

I mean, obviously, if Rose didn’t start, the organization would have a problem. But I don’t think anyone has told VDN that he has to start Rose, I think the message is delivered in a more subtle manner. I think the same message probably has come down about Deng and to a lesser extent Noah. If those 3 guys didn’t start, I think VDN would get a call from upstairs. Those 3 guys are organization priorities. So if healthy, they will always receive minutes.

For the other 2 starting spots, the organization has no long term investment in those positions, so VDN has room to experiment. People in the organization may feel that Tyrus should start, but that directive hasn’t been communicated to VDN. Its not a priority or a concern of management – its VDN’s decision. In that way, it may be similar to Gordon. But I doubt the front office is telling VDN not to start Thomas against VDN’s objections. They would be basically handicapping him. VDN may believe (because this isn’t definite yet) that Taj is a better fit. And since the organization doesn’t place value in retaining Tyrus, its VDN’s call to make.

Next year, if Noah plays well, I believe retaining him will be a priority. Thus, his starting spot won’t be up for grabs, it will be assured. But if Noah disappoints, than VDN or whoever the coach is will be free to make the call. I guess I would say, some of this is on Tyrus, because he has made himself expendable in the organization eyes. Noah, if he plays well this season, could avoid that fate.

YfBB is exactly right.

There can be no conspiracy without a plan.
There can be no plan without a brain.

On a positive note, bringing up memories of the Boy#*#@ era has made my Vinny hate slightly less visceral.

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

TT

it will be Tyrus Thomas. He will always be a good shot blocker and highlight dunker but that is all he will be!
