Open Preseason Thread: Bulls at Indiana Pacers

Hey! Bulls are back! The excitement that only a first-round playoff loss can instill has yet to be quenched.

As it turns out, I'm out of town to watch a far more depressing and awful team, but I'll catch up on the tape sometime Sunday. This one is on CSN+ locally.

Starting Line Ups
Bulls starters: Deng, Thomas, Noah, Salmons Rose/Pacers: Granger , Foster Rush, Ford

by Option27 on Oct 2, 2009 6:04 PM CDT reply actions

Should the the regular starting 5

It’ll be interesting to see how they play together. Deng was shut down shortly after we got Salmons (and he wasn’t 100% in the short time they played together), so this is really our first chance to see those 5 together.

It's also pretty funny that he decided to take number 7. It'd be HIGHLY entertaining to watch him

it was just a joke. I just think they need to cut bait with the Skiles/Pax era.

i know i may be in the minority

but i don’t think either one’s contract is THAT bad.

i think deng has this year to redeem himself, otherwise, yeah his contract is a load of garbage.

and hinrich makes too much to be the 3rd guard, but he’d start on a lot of teams and his contact is probably worth it then.

I totally disagree about having them around Derrick

I think veteran players (those who actually play meaningful minutes) help, and I think it helps to have some guys with different strengths on the team.

Are there guys somewhere in the universe who are a better theoretical fit next to Derrick? Sure – but I’m far from sold that the main criteria for that are cheaper, younger, and more athletic. Meanwhile, we’ve got guys who are reasonably athletic and quick – not that it’s their primary strength, but then that’s pretty much what Tyrus has going for him and how’s that working out? And they’re also good locker room guys by all reports I’ve seen and have some experience in the league. There’s a difference between being open to making good trades and dumping good players just because they aren’t the ideal fit.

I was surprised that the scab refs seemed pretty decent

It’s hard to judge from a low-intensity preseason game, but I wouldn’t have noticed any difference if I hadn’t known the refs were different. I might have been wrong about the replacements being a disaster. The regular refs might want to consider swallowing their pride and giving in, because they certainly aren’t going to have any sympathy from the fans.

Really, the Krik bashing is hystrical

He’s one of the better guards in the NBA at his present salary.

For Chicago, he’s expensive given the commitment to Rose but the vet isn’t complaining about backing up Rose.

When Krik’s traded, it will happen, it will be for good players or draft picks,

by Noe_Valley on Oct 4, 2009 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't say cynical as much as basing your opinion on a checklist of characteristics rather than on-court results

I’ll give you younger, longer, and cheaper. But what makes you think he can go from D-Leaguer to 3rd guard on a team that plans to make a reasonable challenge in the playoffs?

D-League stats from last season for Byars: .475 fg%, .383 3%, .753 ft%, 16.8 ppg/36, 2.63ast/36, 4.57reb/36 – that’s D-League again, and as one of the top options on the team. Now I’m not saying he’s got no shot in the NBA, and if you wanted to argue him over Lindsey to hold down the bench I probably wouldn’t even blink. Why you think he brings more to the team than Kirk, I don’t get. I think you’re too focused on the contract issue.

In honor of the dearly departed, I declare July PB&J month - everyone raise a sandwich to the memory of Ben!

by wjb1492 on Oct 3, 2009 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I can just tell.

I have watched Hinrich for six years now this will be his seventh and I’m just so sick of his dopey ass in a Bulls jersey. I don’t understand this cities infatuation with mopey short white QB’s and PG’s. (Rex)

Just because you don’t play well in the D-League doesn’t mean you can’t play in the NBA. If you’re playing with bad players bad things happen. Maybe if he’s paired with real basketball players he can open looks. He’s good enough to get a call up. But lets just march out the same over paid average players (Hinrich and Deng) who don’t even fit the team anymore. Lets be honest if it wasn’t for their contract I have a feeling these guys would have been dealt by now.

Sometimes those fringe players thrive in a good system around good players where they don’t have to be the man.

I think they Bulls should do everything in their powers to try and trade Hinrich and Deng.

I've got this thing and it's fucking golden!

by SoulEater7 on Oct 3, 2009 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions

If it wasn't for their contracts, there'd be little point in wanting to trade them

Lu and Kirk are both legitimate NBA players – complementary players, but among the top 30 at their positions. If you just consider play and not contract, Kirk’s a great guy to have as a third guard; he plays both spots very well for a backup and is a legitimate starter at PG. If he can stay healthy, Lu’s a borderline all-star talent. Put either of them on a lower contract and they’re a steal.

I’m not saying untradeable by any means – but IMO only in a good deal. The team does need to stick guys out on the floor who can play. I’m seriously baffled that you’d rather gamble PT on a fringe NBA player in the hopes that he does better against NBA opponents than he did in the D-League. I wouldn’t consider a salary dump unless the Bulls are totally out of it mid-season with no hope of making a playoff push to help entice a free agent.

In honor of the dearly departed, I declare July PB&J month - everyone raise a sandwich to the memory of Ben!

by wjb1492 on Oct 3, 2009 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions

comparing either Hinrich or Deng to Grossman is ridiculous

those guys could start just about anywhere in the NBA. Grossman’s career is over.

I guess I can understand someone wanting Hinrich and Deng gone, but thinking you’re going to replace their production with a D-Leaguer is absurd. I’d rather the Bulls not be unwatchable like they were the first half of last season.

by darksmokepuncher on Oct 3, 2009 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions

and honestly, what "fit" does this team have?

with VDN running this team, our best bet is to just put the best players on the floor, and hope they can make something happen.

The last time we played without Hinrich and Deng it was the first half of last season. Imagine going through that again, only without Ben Gordon.

by darksmokepuncher on Oct 3, 2009 7:45 PM CDT up reply actions

hmmm

my thoughts are biased….probably….

Hinrich was pretty consistant in what he brought to the table UNTIL 2007, and 2008 he was injured… so for 4 of his seasons he was pretty consistantly bringing this team 16 and 6…I think you are hating just way too much at this point…

I've got this thing and it's fucking golden!

by SoulEater7 on Oct 3, 2009 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

What production?

Seriously? Last year, in spite of all those games missed to injuries, Kirk and Lu contributed a combined total of 1193 points, 418 rebounds, 291 assists, 126 steals, and 44 blocks, all while shooting a combined 44.4% overall, 40.7% from 3, and 79.4% from the line.

Replacing them with junk wouldn’t hurt at all – except that we saw how much it did when they were both out early in the season….

In honor of the dearly departed, I declare July PB&J month - everyone raise a sandwich to the memory of Ben!

by wjb1492 on Oct 4, 2009 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions

thats fine, but I just think the team needs to still build around Rose.

these guys are part of the old regime they may have had some decent stats but then all the better to trade them. Honestly I just don’t think Deng and Hinrich fit the Bulls style anymore. I mean they are very replaceable in my eyes. Im sorry I just think you need to move on from these type of guys. I would argue that Deng and Hinrich are in some ways mentally weak. That when the pressures on in the highest levels they shrieval up. They have also peaked in their potential and won’t be getting much better. So why not trade them while you can get something for them?

I've got this thing and it's fucking golden!

by SoulEater7 on Oct 4, 2009 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think any of us said not to trade them under the right circumstances.

But you started the whole thing by saying you’d rather have Byars over Kirk. And everyone who responded to you pointed out that this is ridiculous – no way does Byars even come close to doing what Kirk does for the team.

Now you’re walking down the road of Kirk and Lu contributing nothing (or at least very little) to team success, which is patently false. Team needs to build around Derrick? Great, but how about you don’t propose doing that by replacing legitimate NBA players with training camp scrubs who will be luck to hold down the bench for someone this season.

There are many quite legitimate arguments for trying to trade Kirk and Lu. I don’t agree with all of them, but there are many I do agree with. But they are both good players who have contributed a lot to this team, and who are being counted on to contribute a lot this coming season. IMO, you being tired of them in Bulls unis is a really crappy argument for trading them, and acting like they don’t contribute anything or harping on their flaws as players don’t change the fact that we need someone on the court producing this season. I personally think they’re going to have good years, and have several remaining productive years in their careers. You obviously don’t. I would rather watch Kirk and Lu this season and see the team have some success than start dumping guys – just to be sure we get something for them – and always be on that building for later, perpetually chasing the next unknown superstar treadmill.

In honor of the dearly departed, I declare July PB&J month - everyone raise a sandwich to the memory of Ben!

I love his measureables: 6’8.75" in shoes, 7’4.5" wingspan, 9’2.5" standing reach. (That’s the same standing reach as Chris Kaman, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Tyson Chandler.) Richard fills a need if he can guard thick PFs.

6-8 from the field, no fouls, no assist, 2 boards, 1 block, 1 TO and 3-4 from the line.

The defense wasn’t really strong here. Brandon Rush isn’t really going to stop him.

I missed the second half, but in the first it looked like he was getting good looks from the shots he created for himself.
