[From the FanShots. Not officially unleashing the Org.-wants-Tyrus-to-fail-so-they-don't-have-to-pay-him tirade until the start of the regular season. For now, we'll just assume Vinny is being strange. -ed.]

I know it's just a preseason game, but it's the penultimate one and there's no apparent reason to not start Tyrus. So, why the hell isn't Tyrus starting Vinny? Give the man his starts and his minutes.

Couldn't it just be as simple as

Tyrus isn’t 100% healthy yet, therefore they’d rather wait another game til they start him? There’s no chance Taj is our starting 4 on opening day. I don’t get what the big deal is…

I dont mind it in the preseason

but its still scary…any success might make vinny think he found something….like i said im hoping whatever the reason, its also getting lineup changes out of vinnys systems….i hope he realizes pargo isnt bg, taj is a good bench player that can give you spot up minutes, and aside from the top 7….no one should get much burn…

yeah, probably.

Tyrus did limp a bit when leaving the last game. Though if he’s ok to play, why not just start him?

And there’s an absolute chance Taj starts on opening day. Friggin’ Thabo started at the 2 last year.

Clearly you know nothing about basketball!

If Tyrus is getting over an injury, the sensible thing to do is to bring him off the bench. That way, we not only risk him making the injury worse, we send the important message to everyone that getting injured won’t be tolerated and makes you subject to losing your starting gig.

Seriously, you run this blog?

yea im not going to get overly concerned about this

vinny did this with gordon’s injuries in the preseason last year and after his initial thabo flirtation, he ended up giving gordon more starts and playing time than skiles and [name redacted] ever did. for all of vinny’s downfalls last year, one thing he did get was that gordon needed to play and play a lot, so i highly doubt tyrus’ future with the team or contract considerations will effect his playing time.

Calogero

For a good part of last year there was only 8 or 9 players and Gordon was the best scorer so playing him wasn’t such a difficult decision to make. However there is no reason at all that Taj should start unless Vinny’s trying to motivate Tyrus or Vinny’s trying to infuriate and diminsh his role, bottom line!

Me too

Taj has been playing well and he’s still adapting to the NBA game. Maybe Vinny wants to use these games to see what Taj’s capable of and give him confidence, since he already knows what Tyrus can give to the team.

James Johnson can do that better

Tyrus really isn’t large enough to get the type of ‘perspiration control’ Vinny’s looking for.

Typical. 5 things pop to mind

- They are really giving Tyrus Thomas the full Ben Gordon treatment.

- If someone is healthy enough to play they are healthy enough to start

- The Bulls need to get Tyrus and Noah playing well together. They need to share the floor as much as possible, especially in the preseason, since they are the Bulls two most talented (and young inside players).

- I guess Rose will be coming off the bench on Friday. And if he isn’t / doesn’t… why Tyrus?

- Vinny being Vinny. Don’t outsmart yourself. This is an idiot proof lineup. Don’t prove me wrong.

It's not like it's unusual for a rookie.

At this point, I’d rather have him fouling because he’s trying to defend.

by wjb1492 on Oct 19, 2009 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like your outlook.

And you’re right – he doesn’t foul because he’s out of position. He tends to foul because he’s playing hard, defending the rim, that kind of thing. If he can just get a little stronger and refine his game, he’ll be a great rotation player for years to come.

Taj starting in the preseason isn't that crazy,

but if it happens even once in the regular season Vinny needs to be launched to the moon.

The org has already given up on Tyrus

They no longer see him as any kind of “core” player, hence the speculation about him losing minutes to Taj Gibson. They’ll probably keep him around just because he’s got an expiring contract, but he’s not important enough to the organization anymore for them to care about developing him. I don’t necessarily know that that’s wrong, but I will point out that he did have great trade value at one point. I’m afraid this may end up being another instance of the Bulls losing an asset and getting nothing back in return.

by Big D on Oct 19, 2009 5:52 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Can you pinpoint when this happened

and provide some evidence for it? I’m not doubting you, but especially with the positive T2-related vibes coming out of the berto center this month, I’m just surprised. I still hold out a lot of hope for Tyrus, especially with good young players behind him, and I don’t think the organization feels all that different. If T2 broke out this year I could see them paying him and going hardcore after Wade. If he doesn’t, he doesn’t, and they’ve taken steps to cover their ass. But I don’t think that they’ve decided anything more than that.

And I think the starting Taj tonight means…nada.

How about this summer . . .

When by all accounts, the team never even approached Tyrus to talk about an extension? If they really thought he was a part of their future, wouldn’t they have at least tried to see if they could sign him to a below-market contract? I’m not saying they should have done that because of the cap situation, but if they want to use his expiring contract for salary cap space they’ll need to renounce his rights in the offseason. The fact that they’ve kept him around instead of trying to resign him or trade him shows that they view him mainly as a contract at this point.

by Big D on Oct 19, 2009 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

no point tying up 2010 money now

even if it is ‘below market’. If they weren’t going to do it for Gordon, why for Thomas?

Oh, I agree

I’m just saying it means he’s probably gone in the offseason, since they’ll need to renounce his rights for cap room.

I think you are all jumping the gun a bit here

If Tyrus is healthy and does not start the opening regular season game, I’ll jump ship on this team. It’s not gonna happen but I can understand the need for some news during this boring ass preseason.

Gotta maintain that routine so we can keep our string of pre-season wins going

There will be plenty of time to change that routine during the meaningless string of 82 non-exhibition games we’ll start playing in a couple weeks!

by Sports2 on Oct 19, 2009 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No reason at all Thomas shouldn't start

This is a excuse on Vinny’s part to not play Thomas. The power forward position is Taj’s to lose mark my words. Thomas role is already being diminished as I have said it would be, and even though Thomas will shine Vinny and his guys will make every excuse to not play Tyrus.

by Mr Rhythm on Oct 19, 2009 6:48 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Lol Vinny, now this post has some merit after details emerge.

So instead of just saying “Hey, Tyrus has been hurt, he’s going to come off the bench tonight, he’s played well and will probably start opening night” he says that Taj is starting because they’ve had a routine. Yet Tyrus will start opening night.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but opening night > all preseason games combined, so shouldn’t we disrupt a routine now to get Tyrus into the spot he will be opening night, rather than keep a preseason routine and break that closer towards opening night?

Am I missing something here? VDN even fails on basic explanations.

Rypac what you just did was expose Vinny as a liar

If you bench Tyrus in the preseason (which is when you build chemistry) why start him later when the chemistry with Taj is already established. Is Rose gonna be benched opening day because he missed so much time, and people wonder why Tyrus had a bad attitude with Vinny, he’s a deceitful lying prick!

This is stupid

but it’s more of Vinny’s bringing people along slowly after being out, crap.

I’m going to ignore this, and save my explosion for when it happens in the regular season. Life’s too short to get mad at things that aren’t going to happen, like Taj starting on opening day.

Ok, Vinny may be dumb, but he’s not stupid.

Notice who was playing at the end of the game, at least Vinny got that one right for Tyrus.

Interesting “big” lineup in the game down 3 in the final seconds, lol.

Carry-over from Boston Series and Taj Thought

I wish McGraw, Sam, or KC ( John Jacksons too dumb for this one) could really tell Bulls fans what actually went down during the Boston series between Ty anf Vinny. I have heard speculation through sports radio so I have an idea but I want a beat reporter to tell us… unfortunalty if they tell us they ll lose either Vinny or some players…

Sam is the one to do it cause I think Bulls.com really doesnt care what he writes even if its negative…. and Sam wouldnt burn sources over this cause his sources are real old and trust him.

Who should start… Tyrus…. but I actually like what Vinny is doing. He is using an expendable starter like Tyrus to show Defense “may” matter this year. Tyrus is never in right position( he leaves his man way too much to block shots) and Taj is really smart at rotating. Vinny cant make an example out of Derrick cause Derrick is hurt/President of Bulls so he is using Tyrus to show team…. that maybe he is going to demand defense.

Is Vinny smart enough to stress defense? – Probably not, but if I am reading this situation right I think he is trying it was the Taj / Ty thing.

by Jscho316 on Oct 20, 2009 12:01 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Why can't he just say

“I want you to spend as much time on defense as Taj does, Tyrus.” Instead of this confusing object lesson played out in the public arena where a benching seems more of an insult than anything else.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

by cranscape on Oct 20, 2009 8:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He could do exactly what Skiles did,

get on Tyrus for not running the floor and busting his ass on defense. It bothers me to no end that Tyrus still jogs, and sometimes walks, down the floor, instead of trying to beat his man to the other end.

I have NEVER seen Vinny speak to Tyrus

There’ve been occasional pats on the back when he walks to the bench but as far as telling Tyrus anything constructive, I never seen it! As a mater of fact in the old days when coaches called timeouts, the coach would sit the guys down and they’d go over plays or certain points, why the heck do the Bulls coaches huddle together first then briefly say something to the guys? It’s backwords!

by Mr Rhythm on Oct 20, 2009 2:43 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Several other teams coaches huddle

together before they talk to the team. Skiles did it here and still does it.
