Preseason open Game Thread: Bulls at Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota Timberwolves at Chicago Bulls, Oct 16, 2009 7:00 PM CDT

Reportedly Salmons may be out due to child-birthing things. But if Tyrus is back, I'll take that trade.

Though let's face it: Rose-less preseason sucks eggs.

Go Tyrus

Nice to see Tyrus playing well and the Bulls shooting the ball well. You can EASILY see the ball movement. We miss Ben but if they can create some chemistry out there, I’m not sure how much we’ll miss Ben’s scoring. Time will tell.

I like this kid Byars

he has a active body, he can hit the three I think he’s a keeper. Luol is not the same, he’s not in good shape, he’s not as quick and explosive. I think Taj is a really good player, and Kirt to me should start with Derrick. I don’t see much ball movement with Rose, Deng, and Salmons together.

No worries...

TT had a great stretch about 2 thirds of the way through last season.

It just always seems that VDN takes him out and either forgets about him, or Tyrus appears to lose interest (or maybe gets tired, who knows). It would be huge if a different TT shows up this year.

This VDN just went with a HUGE lineup. Hinrich JJ TT Taj and Noah

That’s a looooong and tall lineup with loads of activity. Not much shooting there, but the defense with that lineup should be beastly.

I just think JJ is gonna struggle with defending SF because he’s not built to be a active runner, chasing slimmer more athletic forwards, so why put him on even more athletic, quicker shooting guards? JJ at SF I think in itself is a experiment!

ha!

I’ll be playing the waiver wire pretty heavy, but I came in 2nd last year with a fairly consistent lineup of starters I think.

Baron Davis is an option as well, and I already have Durant.

Unfortunately we couldn’t keep anyone drafted in the first round so everyone goes back in the pot.

I ended up with a bunch of Bulls this year because they were so cheap. I’m hoping it doesn’t backfire – I usually avoid them, so if they’re playing like crap at least I’m not doubly pissed off.

Well, I already excluded the shooting.

Although, even there he’s been driving a lot more this preseason – if he can get whatever issue he has going with layups worked out, that will be nice. You’d think a few of them have to drop just by chance at some point – we see other guys throw up crazy layups all the time that somehow drop, and Kirk’s constantly rim out.

But he’s had some nice plays on defense and some really nice screens.

I hope not playing in the pre-season doesn’t affect Rose’s game. I know he’s worked his ass off this summer but we all know he gets into shooting modes where he doesn’t make shots…..I really wish he was healthy just to get the time in.

He's the least of my worries...

He’ll be back for the last two preseason games…you just can’t take any chances, it’s the preseason. He’s young and hungry so I doubt the week off has affected his conditioning that much; we still have, what, 10 days until the season starts so he’ll be fine.

I love Tyrus's stats tonight

In just 15 minutes he’s had
4 of 5 from the field, 6 of 9 from the stripe, 9 boards, 2 blocks, a steal and ZERO turnovers. But of some concern, the Bulls are 0 of 6 from the 3. Could this be his year?

Both of them have gone for 20+ points 10+ rebs this preseason…if they can do that consistently, and Rose can improve as well, we’ll definitely be a 50-win team

by Stacey_Is_King on Oct 16, 2009 9:15 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

haha, so you mean if they can consistently play way above what their ability levels suggest

they are usually capable of then we’ll win many more games?

Really?

It's not naive...

They are high draft picks, thus high expectations. Still could pan out.

Stacey if Vinny used these guys right they could put up numbers

maybe not 20 10 every night, but with Noah hustling, getting rebounds, Tyrus being active and around the rim, these guys can do it. And also my dream is to see Rose and Thomas do a consistant pick and roll offense. These guys will be two of the leagues best young duo’s!

Imagine if we can sit Pargo for most of each game and our rookies continue to improve.

Imagine if there is no dropoff in Salmon’s game and Byers continues to hit the 3 and give us a big guard on defense. Imagine if Miller stays healthy all season with his smarts. Imagaine if Kurt becomes a candidate for 6th man of the year. Imagine if Vinny isn’t as stupid as we all suspect. Imagine if I will still feel as confident once the drugs wear off. This could be the Bulls year.

On another note . . . Yi looked amazing tonight

by Option27 on Oct 16, 2009 11:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

some observations from the game

- Tyrus was awesome. When he plays with that type of energy, very few power forwards in the league can keep up with him. If he is in attack mode every night this season he is going to have a big year and the Bulls are going to be good.

- If the D isn’t good, VDN should be fired. The Bulls are long, quick and athletic. Tyrus, Taj, Noah, Deng, JJ, Hinrich, Salmons – all those guys can cover a lot of ground. If the Bulls play with energy on D, they should be a top 10 defensive team. If Rose starts playing D on an average level, this team can be very good. That should be one of VDN’s main focus, to get Rose to play D.

- The Bulls are deep but there is a nice pecking order to the roster. It will be interesting to see who gets minutes – you can’t play 10 guys (well VDN could, but he’d be wrong too). I like JJ, but I think he is going to get caught in the minutes crunch.

- I really want to see the Bulls play these final 2 games with their full roster. I want to see Tyrus and Noah be effective together, I want to see guys keep up the passing with Rose and Salmons in the lineup. It is obvious without Rose the Bulls will get killed on the fastbreak. And their offense

- Pargo got killed in this thread, but he wasn’t that bad. He just isn’t a natural pg. Since the Bulls forwards and 2 guards aren’t good ball handlers, the team relies a great deal on the point guard to handle the ball. With Rose or Hinrich it works. With Pargo at point guard the offense falls apart. But getting spot minutes as the 4th guard shouldn’t kill the Bulls. And his D is pretty good, better than advertised.

by Basketball Smurf on Oct 17, 2009 2:20 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i was going to say

without rose, their offense stalls at time. Rose is the only Bulls player who can get any shot he wants with the clock winding down. He is going to be the guy who gets the offense going when it stagnates. Without Rose, the Bulls are a limited offensive team.

by Basketball Smurf on Oct 17, 2009 2:22 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hate to get all red assed but I hope thats the last

preseason game I watch the Bulls clown ass around. Ok it’s preseason but still there was a lot of slothful play in the 4th. I know they all wanna go out and get drunk… I kinda felt bad for Byars. The dude is trying to make the team and Vinny doesn’t really put him until the 4th quarter when everyone is dickin around not playing hard. That must be frustrating when your trying to land a job. I got the feeling he was bothered due to the destain on his face while everyone was half way to the bars. Maybe i miss read it but I’m pretty sure thats how I would feel. Like ya gettin cheated.

This might sound dumb but I’m kinda concerned with the depth at both guards. I know both Rose and Salmons are going to get that time but I’m kinda worried about Hinrich and Pargo being the backups. I don’t know.. I haven’t been impressed… there ok.. but my gut says ehhhhh don’t know.

However (if anyone read this)

I will not make excuses for Byars he didn’t play that well tonight… maybe he was just frustrated. So I can’t say that he helped his cause for making to team. His free throws look kinda shaky at times and I know he’s still a rookie himself but I noticed Vinny get upset with Byars shot selection on one particular play, however I thought his shot was in rhythm… maybe Vinny just isn’t a fan. Which sucks for my mental well being as far as needing another guard on this team.

God I want that active Tyrus Thomas in the regular season

Even if he isn’t making shots. Just constantly moving around and chasing the ball leads to good things. And if Vinny drew up that inbounds alley-oop pass, then we at least know his neurons are active for a few minutes a day.

Also, is there a more poorly assembled team than the Timberwolves? The Warriors and Clippers might be competitive if they just fired their coaches. The Grizzlies at least have NBA talent at each position, and the Knicks are full-blown committed to their 2010 dream. And now Love is out for up to 8 weeks.
