Around SBN: How A Letter From Tom Coughlin Helped One Fan's Recovery

"If you get traded, obviously another team wants you, so it's always a positive in that way," Hughes said. "I definitely want to play minutes and contribute. That's a focus of mine. Hopefully, I'll get the opportunity to do that in the near future."

"Larry Hughes, Bulls want same thing: To part ways"

[From the Fanshots. Seems that as long as the Bulls don't take back post-2010 salary, Hughes can be had. His contract is bad, but he has one thing on his side: he's healthy and can play. Not well, of course. But the Bulls can accept guys who can't play in return, and both sides make out OK. -ed.]

Hughes wants to be traded, who could have guessed?! Make it happen, Pax!

nice
But the Bulls are equally as clear they won’t take extra years or salary to do so, and they conveyed that to Jeff Wechsler, Hughes’ longtime representative, in a cordial face-to-face meeting this week.

I think that Pax ultimately would take both of those things,

but he has to make it seem like this isn’t a fire sale. He has to retain some type of bargaining position.

obviously another team is willing to take on your contract in order to get rid of a bad contract they have and get someone else they want.

The only reason sandwich gate got out of the locker room was because Hughes was leveraging for a trade.

Brad Miller is the ideal Hughes trade. If we could do Larry Hughes, Thabo Sefolosha, and Joakim Noah for Brad MIller, I’d be gleeful. Obviously add some fillers in on the Kings side. Hopefully Noah/Sefolosha can be used as enough sweetner to get a Hughes for Miller deal done. I’d still like to give Tyrus one more go around, but with a legitimate center. (Although Gooden would probably start, at least to finish this year, but there should be plenty of minutes for Tyrus still).

you can’t trade thabo mate.. believe it or not, he’s one of the most important pieces on the roster. The thing is Pax seems to have recognized it and i don’t think he’s willing to trade Thabo.. Maybe Larry Hughes and Noce?? Get rid of the cancer cells all at one?

If hughes gets traded

Does that give hope to a 3 guard rotation of rose, gordon, and hinrich???

Man id be so happy!

by piccolomair on Jan 8, 2009 11:31 PM CST reply actions

If Vinny has any balls we should be playing that.

PG- Derrick Rose (32) / Kirk Hinrich (16)
SG- Ben Gordon (36) / Kirk Hinrich (12)

So 36 minutes for Gordon, 32 for Rose, and 28 for Hinrich. That’s perfect.

And I think that’s what you can actually expect. So far this month, Rose has played 32 per game, and Gordon 37. Next year, you give Rose a few more of Hinrich’s minutes and have him and BG in equal roles, with Hinrich in a more reduced role.

I seriously doubt the Bulls will take many minutes away from Gordon. It seems that the Bulls are intent on keeping Gordon long term (the organizational friendly beat writer has changed his tune on Gordon as of late), so I think they won’t take away too many minutes from Gordon. (He’s also been our best player, and is our best shooting guard by far this year).

If Hughes, Sefolosha, or Hunter are eating up shooting guard minutes beyond foul trouble and injuries, then there is a problem. Rose/Gordon/Hinrich are at a caliber where they are enough to just be a 3 guard rotation.

I like your rotation min.

Except i may switch roses with gordons. Rose i think should be on the court longer than any other player on this team. he needs his rest, but just enough that he doesnt explode. 36 minutes of playtime gives him 12 minutes of rest, or an entire quarter. or… 6 minutes a half. Gordon should remain at the 2 longer than any other player, so 32 is fine for him, and hinrich backs up either position with 28. id be fine with those rotation minutes.

If you want to play Rose 36

If you want to play Rose 36 minutes a night, then just take those 4 minutes away from Hinrich.

Play something like

First Half:

8 – Rose/Gordon
6 – Hinrich/Gordon
8 – Rose/Hinrich
2 – Rose/Gordon

Second Half:

6 – Rose/Gordon
6 – Hinrich/Gordon
4 – Rose/Hinrich
8 – Rose/Gordon

by Andrew7 on Jan 9, 2009 6:26 PM CST up reply actions

To elaborate:

Ideally this is what i am proposing the rotation would look like for guards;

At the start of the half you have rose and gordon. with about 3 minutes to go in the 1st you sub out rose for hinrich. Hinrich and gordon backcourt continues into the next quarter, and the start of the next quarter. At about the 9 min mark of that quarter, rose subs in for gordon. Hinrich and Rose backcourt continues until the 1:30 second mark of the half. At which point for the last minute and a half you return back to the gordon and rose backcourt.

The goal of this lineup is to a) keep rose on the court for most of the game while still getting him plenty of rest. b) make gordon play the “important” minutes of the game, by giving the bulls his offense at the times the team needs it the most (begining of quarters to set pace, end of quarters to erase/extend leads). Defensively gordon will have an advantage especially when he comes in at the end of the half, cuz he will be more revitalized than his opponent, so he will have the edge and the ability to push harder on both ends of the floor (also clutch situations) so he is less likely to play poorly on defense. Finally c) kirk hinrich gets to play in a position where he can be aggresive defensively, and it wont cost the team alot. Picking up fouls is always worse in the begining and ending of games, keeping him from becoming mopey. Plus he can wear down the other teams best guard, or simply limit that player before he can get too hot.

This rotation plan stresses defense i suppose more than offense, or rather puts players in positions where they can succeed defensively. Gordon and rose, will have easier times defending opposing guards late in games rather than in the begining or middle of games. at the start of games the other team is bound to get worn out defending a fresh combo of rose and gordon. The middle “junk” of the game will be handled by hinrich who ive always thought did a good job of keeping the flow of games going. I think the only thing that stopped him from really being a good floor general was when he became “mopey” due to shooting woes and foul trouble. If he is always in with either rose or gordon, he wont have to worry about his offense as much (and can instead concentrate on getting those two in position where they can score) and he will be in a position to play aggresively and not worry about fouls.

This is all ideal, and of course depending on who we are playing and who is hot on our team and the other team things have to change, but this would be a good outline for the minutes of those three players and our guard rotation. This is also assuming hughes is gone, and thabo is sharing backup sf duties with noch (if noch is still here).

Sorry its a bit long dude (you’ll find i have a tendency to do that) hope my ideas intrigue individuals…i hope vdn is reading also.

Minus Hughes our rotations get a lot better

Kirk is tons better than Hughes. Better shooter, passer, defender, finisher, free throw shooter, and overall leader are all traits Kirk has the exceed Hughes.

We’ll still have Rose, BG, Kirk, Thabo, and Hunter as our guards. Hunter becomes guaranteed on Saturday. I’m wondering if the team waives him today in anticipation of Hinrich’s return. I prefer that not happen. With Hunter I see Thabo getting pushed more at SF which should mean fewer minutes for Nocioni at the 3 and hopefully fewer minutes altogether.

12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

Hughes' scoring efficiency is dropping majorly!

Not too long ago, Hughes was leading the team in TS, even ahead of Gordon, who has a great year in that department, and is at 57.9 TS. Hughes is now down at 51.8 TS%, after being high earlier in the season. He is still 6th in the team in that department, but outside of Gordon, Hinrich (out almost all year), and Nocioni (hurts the Bulls on the defensive end majorly), our team has not scored the ball very efficiently.

It seems a few weeks back, Hughes has made a conscious decision to just start chucking the ball. SInce then, the drop from having a player with good efficiency to poor efficiency who can score in some volume has seriously hurt the team.

As a bad defensive team

those rushed shots are point differential killers. If we have any hope of keeping games close we have to run something resembling an offense that moves the ball and moves players. Hughes really doesn’t do either.

12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

by NBA Observer on Jan 9, 2009 9:11 AM CST up reply actions

That is the point to make

In the argument about how much better does the rotation get with Kirk’s minutes up and Larry’s down, I think the real difference will be if they can run an offense. Pax on the score yesterday kept mentioning quick shots that led to runouts and easy baskets. If the abscense of Larry reduces the quick/bad shots by 5 a game will that be enough of a difference to stop the other team from scoring at will?
I am guessing no because Ben is still gonna shoot early in the shot clock. Vinny seems to like a quick shot offense coming out of the Diantoni school. I haven’t seen him pull a Noc or Ben or Larry after taking quick shots.

by Jscho316 on Jan 9, 2009 12:32 PM CST up reply actions

Ben doesn't take that many quickshots

Ben really doesn’t take many quickshots. He takes a lot of shots after running around screens, or on that curl play. A bunch off of passes from Rose on dribble penetration. Then some layups and floaters off of his own dribble, as well as some pull up jumpers.

The only quickshots remaining in Gordon’s game really are the pull up threes on the fastbreak, and I think it would be a bad idea to take that out of Gordon’s game.

Acquire Marbury. Buy out the remainder of his contract. Waive him.

Noc’s deal isn’t good, but it would give Donnie Walsh another 13.5 million in expiring cash for Summer 2010. Plus Noc’s deal declines in value.

That was kind of a joke, related to the sneakers comment above.

I don’t think Walsh wants Nocioni’s contract in 2010. And letting Marbury rot until this summer (or buy him out) gives him more than 13.5 million in cap space.

Attn Bean Counters
Lindsey’s Hunter contract will become guaranteed Saturday

12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

by NBA Observer on Jan 9, 2009 8:45 AM CST reply actions

I think I've about had it with Pax...
If Hughes isn’t moved, the task of balancing playing time for such a crowded backcourt falls on first-year coach Vinny Del Negro. Lindsey’s Hunter contract will become guaranteed Saturday, and Kirk Hinrich could return this month from thumb surgery, meaning the Bulls will have six guards.

This team had too many guards to start the season, and it’s only been compounded with the addition of Hunter. Now, I fully understand they needed a body to take Hinrich’s place, especially considering Deng’s injuries this season have meant more time for Thabo at the 3. I have no complaints about Hunter’s contribution to this point.

But it is simply negligent to exacerbate a roster problem you had in the preseason! It weakens depth at other positions on the roster (witness Noc getting minutes at the 4). And frankly, most of these guys at the 1 & 2 are simply not that good as NBA players. Gordon, Rose, and Hinrich look like legit players in a 3-guard rotation, Hunter is an improved A-drain and should get limited minutes going forward, Sefolosha is nearly a bust, and Hughes has a game but is a PITA.

The capper is that the Bulls will probably continue to give all 6 of these guys minutes over every 3-game span. Instead of establishing rotations and roles, the recent tradition of the Bulls team is pick the lineups and rotation by having a monkey throw darts at the Bulls roster.

Pax needs to fix this problem that he created before the season is over. Unfortunately, it’ll probably just create another problem – because we were having these same discussions last year about The Corpse.

I guarantee when Hinrich comes back Hunter will not get any minutes

He has had plenty of DNP without Hinrich. I don’t think the Bulls have any qualms about not playing him.

As long as Hughes is moved, the guard rotation will be fine (as long as they don’t decide to start Hinrich). If they don’t move Hughes, the problem will be Hughes getting minutes, not Hunter.

by JeffD on Jan 9, 2009 12:46 PM CST up reply actions

IF Hughes is moved

That is the big question. I know all parties want it, but I’m not confident it’ll happen. And I don’t see the Bulls actually employing a regular rotation that shares 86-90 mpg at guard among Rose-Gordon-Hinrich and leaving only 6-10 mpg among Hughes-Sefo-Hunter. The team hasn’t shown much commitment to established rotations in the last year and a half.

Hughes wants to play minutes and contribute. Doesn’t he realize for him the two are mutually excusive?

Pax

Still is getting the MUCH better end of the bargain. Hughes even if he is a distraction (or at least if they worry he will be with Heimlich coming back soon, he’s still contributing far better than Big Ben on and off, and that doesn’t add in _rew (no D) _ooden (not that Good)…..who’s playing as well as Joe Smith and who has more value. Well maybe he’s not playing quite as well as the Joe Smith we saw last year before he was traded who was playing the best bball of his career, but he’s playing better than the post trade Joe Smith……and is younger and has more value.

So is the plan to take a “we’ll see who’s playing well in practice” approach, or a “match-ups” approach, or a “work toward consistency” approach, Vinster? Because you say all three things.
