Basically, some team can sign miles to a 10 day contract play him in two games and Portland adds 9 million to its salary cap and gets pushed into the luxury tax.

If Reinsdorf is so concerned (and rightfully so) with maximizing revenue, Paxson needs to sign Miles now

Get him on a 10 day contract, throw him in for a couple minutes during a couple inevitable blowouts, ensure Portland pays the tax and increase the value of that check they get at the end of the year. Oh, and eliminate a potential destination for Gordon.

The caveat is this

Yes it increases the money the Bulls get (from being under the luxury tax) and it makes one fewer destination for Gordon, but it also may make one fewer trading partner for the Bulls.
Here’s a crazy idea: Yahoo Sports talks about how Portland would likely be unable to sign Miles (to prevent him from playing any games), but could they trade for him? Miles would be the most valuable minimum salary player ever for Portland.

I like the thought, but I don't think Miles could be traded before the trade deadline

Doesn’t a team have to keep a player on the roster for at least 3 months after acquisition

Interesting concept

Chris Wallace says Miles can still contribute, but was financially difficult to even keep him on the Grizzlies’ roster.

if this doesn't happen

they should fire all the GMs, not making Portland pay for this would be dumbest business move ever and we hear all the time how professional sports are a business

I believe they're still slightly under (but not enough to sign a Max-FA) with Miles

interesting if they decide to give up on the dream of cap space and instead use LaFrentz in a trade (for Hinrich?)

We should ask Sam Smith

for an insiders account of the Bulls actual financial picture, but the club should have about $100,000 in space right now. That’s enough for a 10 day for Miles.

Could we turn the screws on Portland with this threat?

I'd rather some other team did it

like the Clippers, they don’t mind being petty. I mean, neither do the Bulls, but I’d hope they would be more clandestine about it.

Already emailed him asking him about this situation

I’m planning on posting his response when he sends it back over. He’s usually pretty good about replying to my emails – must be the @tribune.com email address.

Does he still use a trib address?

I thought he had an AOL one now. It probably just forwards to his own personal account anyway.

No my email comes from the Trib

because it’s where I work (for now). He just got back to me with a very short email, this is what he wrote:

thanks for your interest
i wrote about this a month or so ago and teams have been considering it as well as the bulls

So…hopefully someone will pull the trigger?

Here's an idea.

Sign Miles, then threaten to play him if Portland doesn’t take Hughes in a trade for Raef’s expiring contract.

If newspapers and broadcast outlets go at eachother like this

why can’t NBA clubs?

Emperor Stern?

As great an idea as that is...

I’m sure the players union would have something to say about that on Miles Behalf.

I don't think it is that cut and dry

Say a team signs Darius, plays him two games then cuts him. I’m pretty sure it is not adhering to the spirit of the rule and an appeal by the Blazers would be easily approved. If Darius gets signed by a team plays two games but stays on the roster for the rest of the season, then the Blazers would have his salary go against their cap.

Either way, Raef’s contract is coming off the books and the Blazers can clear cap space to sign a free agent this summer. Dave broke it down over at Blazers Edge.

This is a professional sports league, where letter of the law usually trumps the spirit

Well, actually, it’s the NBA, so I guess any appeal just depends on David Stern’s whim

Stern is a lawyer so who knows

So many things he does just doesn’t make sense. I still think that 10 game is just the threshold for the sake of making a cutoff point. If Portland appeals and point out that he played one or two minutes at the end of a game and only plays 10 games, then it proves that Miles had a career ending injury. I think it’s the same thing as if he could actually play and played 15-20 minutes a night for 11 games then blew out his knees again, that the Blazers would probably win the appeal they would file after that.

what about the spirit of the rule of forcing medical retirement

when the player wants to play?

They already paid him two years while he didn't play and they're on the hook for 2 more

You know and I know that KP went down the medical retirement path to get Miles off the roster. They didn’t want him in the locker room and they wanted to put someone who can play/practice in his roster spot. The Blazers did it legally and Darius flew to NY to visit with an NBA approved doctor who told him he should never play again. It’s not like the Blazers broke any rules or pulled strings to medically retire Darius.

I know I’m over here talking about it, but I still think it’s a non issue. It just seems logical to me that if a guy has a “career ending injury” per an NBA doctor, then the guy tries to come back anyway and plays only 10 games then gets cut again, then his career is over. It seems like an appeal wouldn’t be that hard to get approved. If he stays on a team then it’s a whole different story.

also

we can all acknowledge that Pritchslappy is trying to work the system. So I don’t mind other teams doing the same to screw him.

Sure, most of the reasoning is owner jealousy over Paul Allen’s free-spending, but I’m not holding my breath for Reinsdorf to care that much.

I was listening to Simmons' podcast yesterday

And he made this huge point about how the Blazers were never going to be able to retain all their players and that KP had put them in a bad situation. Bucher and Stein both retorted that Paul Allen could care less about signing everyone and having a 110 million dollar payroll if it meant the team was going to contend.

Vinny Del Negro interviewed for the job today. I mean come on! Nobody else thinks this is nuts?

thanks for the link

like I assumed, they still have cap room but not max cap room. Plus all ‘dem cap holds, though I’d have to think that some RFAs will be dealt between now and then.

Yeah

The writing is on the wall for Frye and Diogu. They’re the two with the big cap holds. Frye has a chance to be resigned but I doubt it. They’ll either be let go or traded for nothing. The both could probably sign a contract somewhere else that will pay them more than Portland is willing to pay. Frye could probably start on some team in the NBA.

Pritchard has said more than once that Paul Allen wants to play with that capspace this summer since he’s never had that opportunity before. They are probably looking to sign an $8-9 million guy. I don’t think they’re looking for a max contract player. But because of Allen’s desire to play with capspace, I think Raef’s contract will just expire with the Blazers.

I read somewhere in Dec though

That the Blazers woudl likely get an arbitrator and win in this instance….

So it probably means nothing….except if teh Bulls signed him they’d see more Hughes issues perhaps, and have another former cancer on the sidelines to help Noah/Thomas and Rose mature….

Even if Miles has turned the corner (And he sure acts humble in interviews)…..we can move on, it’ll likely cost the Bulls too much.

I do hope another team does it as at least the arbitrator distraction could cause some strife in Portland…
