David Thorpe 1/7
Brendan (Pittsfield, MA): Thorpe, I know you're big on Ty Thomas and he seems to be "breaking out" (loosely used). Could we really be seeing his emergance, or is he just going to be an inconsistant player? second note. ..Would Spencer Hawes solve their problems? seems like a rebuild move to me, which might be the best idea ... your thoughts?SportsNation David Thorpe: (12:14 PM ET ) Clearly I'm biased because I really love that young man, but I can easily slip on my analysts hat with TT. I still think his engine runs cold on occassion, but his numbers since December 2 are terrific, despite being on a roller coaster ride again. I think he's over 20 on PER since that date. And he's 13 months younger than LaMarcus Aldridge and 2 months younger than Al Horford.

in the same chat he advocates the Raptors sell high on Bargnani.

Boo to Thorpe.
brooklynpark,mn [via mobile]: Hey do u think derrick rose will be as good as cp3
SportsNation David Thorpe: No.

he also went on to name
terry and nelson as better PGs than rose… at least someone asked him about it. :P

fuck that
Nelson and Terry? Derrick Rose would absolutely kill if he had the players around him that they do.

Seriously, people...
…take off the Rose-colored, I’m-in-Chicago-and-a-slight-of-a-player-I-like-is-a-personal-insult-to-me glasses. He’s not playing as good as those two right now. That’s all he’s answering. Not potential (he said below Rose “will get there”). Not who you’d rather have on the team for the future.
He thinks those guys are playing better right now. Is that ridiculous?

well, i don't think Jason Terry is a pg
and you also have to look at context. I don’t think Nelson come to the Bulls and play any better than Rose has. I do believe that Rose could be a much greater force playing with guys like Hedo and Dwight Howard. Nelson right now is doing everything the Orlando Magic ask him to do, but that doesn’t make him better. Even right now.

Maybe I've just read too many Thorpe chats.
When he answers a “who’s better…” question, the answer should almost invariably be surrounded by a mental, “Currently, I think _____________ is playing better basketball.”

the other problem with that
is that his answer, when questioned about his choices over rose, was that “those are the facts.” no “i think” about it.
by Jaina on Jan 7, 2009 6:05 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I dunno about the his opinion of him never being on the level of CP3
Now I’m not running some campaign or anything. But his quickness and speed seems to already be on that level and his athleticism already surpasses his and Williams.
And not to say he’ll beat him out but the level that Williams and Paul play I think he can get there. His stats aren’t too far off but he shows great promise to me having so many good qualities that others see in the great PGs of today and old. And being a bit younger as well. The thing about Paul to me is that he seems to be that instant leadership quality that he had coming out of the gates. I think guys like him and Rose are just winners though.
And come on

hes completely unbiased.

Rose's overall play is not that great since he has had several bad games
recently. However, Nelson and Terry are what they are, while Rose will be a much better player in a year or two.

Chris Paul had one of he greatest PG seasons EVER last year.
And he’s playing BETTER this year. He is 4 years into a path to be one of the greatest PG’s of all time. It’s not outrageous at all dismiss that Rose won’t be as good.
Viva la nuance! Reading comprehension rules!!!

Not outrageous,
but lazy to simply give a ‘No’ answer with nothing to back it up. Could have even added a simple, “To early to tell” generic answer.

Why should he add "to early tell" if he doesn't believe it?
“No” is a great answer for anyone with the knowledge and intelligence to understand the context. In some ways I view a Thorpe chat as a good test of basketball intelligence. If you’re smart enough, his one word answers make complete sense because you understand the context. Why should he waste time placating people with caveats? This isn’t international diplomacy.
by Scotter on Jan 7, 2009 5:39 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Funny you mention that since he does give a very similar generic answer
later in that very same chat…
M (DC): I respect your in-depth basketball knowledge, but I don’t understand your reference “just the facts” in picking Jameer and Terry over D. Rose as better pointguards. Playing without any low post threat, D. Rose averages more assists (6.0) than Jameer (5.0) or Terry (3.7). Can you explain?
SportsNation David Thorpe: It’s not just assists, M. It’s overall game. C’mon, the guys is so young. He’ll get there, but he’s not there now.
And perhaps Thorpe can “waste time placating people with caveats” because the comparison is not that far off…
Derrick Rose so far:
PPG APG SPG
17.1 6 0.9
Chris Paul
PPG APG SPG
16.1 7.8 2.2
If anything, I think what Thorpe is alluding to is that he doesn’t respect Rose’ outside shooting…
Bryan (Pasadena): I could’ve sworn you’d said before you were a Rondo fan. Jameer over Rajon?
SportsNation David Thorpe: It’s really close, but Jameer is playing so well and I like my pg’s to be able to shoot.
"Derrick Rose is like a $500,000 Maybach parked in the driveway of a $200,000 house in the middle of nowhere" - Bill Simmons

No, he's not.
He’s alluding to the fact that Chris Paul has established himself as player that will go down as one of the five best points in NBA history. He’s coming off one of the greatest seasons by a point guard in NBA history, and he’s playing even better so far this season. Derrick would have to max out his potential to eventually pass Paul.
Their rookie seasons are only close on a superficial level. Here’s the statistical comparison. The Thorpe chat test appears to work.

I agree, it was smug and I was being an ass.
But, come on. It was a simple yes or no question with a simple answer.
brooklynpark,mn [via mobile]: Hey do u think derrick rose will be as good as cp3
SportsNation David Thorpe: No.
Afterwords, you’re supposed to think, “Duh, Paul had insanely good rookie season and has only gotten insanely better. What are the odds of Derrick, talented as he is, being better than the best point guard since Magic Johnson?”
As underrated as Paul continues to be, it’s not like his incredible play hasn’t been discussed or talked about. Thorpe assumes a certain level of knowledge.
by Scotter on Jan 8, 2009 12:22 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Thorpe is just alluding to how much he loves Chris Paul
Because there isn’t a single PG in the league that is close to his level of play. For all the love he got last year, he’s become forgotten person due to the LeBron/Wade/Kobe media show.
And there’s a vast difference in picking Nelson over Rose now than saying Rose can have the same potential as Chris Paul. Rose probably will surpass Jameer Nelson, but it will take A LOT for him to equal Paul’s production from last season and this current one.

It was a simple question:
“Do you think…” The answer “no” says, “No, I don’t think…” The question asked for his opinion, not a statistical dissertation. No need to defend it. If you’ve watched Paul have a money game, it’s hard to argue that ANYONE is better than him. Rose has shown Iverson kind of individual ability. He’s yet to show me the ability to rack up a lot of points through using all 4 teammates at the same time. Can it come? I think so, but it’s not there yet. If you remember the play he went to the hole lefty against Al Jefferson, it was pretty impressive, but a simple pass would have given Gray the uncontested dunk. When he makes the right pass after forcing the D to overcommit, I’m going to think he’s starting to catch CP3. He’s an outstanding rookie right now; no need to start comparing him with Paul, Williams, Billups, Parker, etc, just yet. If Thorpe doesn’t think he’ll become better than Paul, nothing for us to get offended about.

Someone should ask David Thorpe
Why he killed Luol Deng’s money jumpshot, while adding no working postmoves or driving moves to the basket in one on one play.
Perhaps Ben Gordon should teach people how to do one on one moves. If you take Ben Gordon, and put him in a bigger NBA body, that players averaging like 35-40 a night.

Players who have averaged 35-40 a night in the history of the NBA.
Wilt Chamberlain – 5 Times
Michael Jordan – 1 Time
Kobe Bryant – 1 Time
Rick Barry – 1 Time
I don’t know that there is an alternative universe outside your PS3 NBA Live where Gordon could be one of those types of NBA players.

one year he averaged exactly 35. the other was 37.1.

Rounded up to exactly 35.
According to basketball reference, MJ averaged 34.98 in 87-88.

If you are going to round, Lew/Kareem makes it.
In 71-72, he averaged 34.8/16.6/4.6 (block and steal stats were not kept, but 4/1.5 would be a good estimate based on later years).
