The officiating stinks.

The Bulls would be up 10 if it was even handed. Shaq knocks Noah down and the ref ignores it. Heavy contact then the Bulls drive the paint, no calls. On the ohter end, incidental body contact is whistled every time.

Even though the Bulls have been just as agressive on offense, the Suns have shot 20 free throws to the Bulls 8.

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

If they are being removed because of defense, then the coaching staff needs to address that issue and see to it that those two get better. But honestly, Nash did more in the last few minutes against Hinrich and Thabo than he did all game. I don’t think Gordon or Rose would have done any worse.

He didn't decimate anything.

I’ll add you to the chorus of people who treat Steve Kerr’s breaking up the Suns like Jerry Krause’s breaking up the 98’ Bulls. It’s not like he broke up a dynasty or something…unless you consider a team that continually gets to San Antonio a dynasty of sorts.

Phoenix loses because Amare Stoudemire is a knucklehead who only cares about scoring points and being “the man”. 12 pts, 6 rbds and ZERO DEFENSE (the whole Phoenix team is guilty of that though) will not get it. If this guy raises his level of all around play, phoenix becomes damn near unbeatable.

by lexdiamonds0730 on Jan 31, 2009 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe...

before typing you should learn to read. I said nothing of the 98’ Bulls and never wrote anything resembling the word dynasty.

What the Suns did have was a system that maximized the efficiency of numerous players—Nash, Marion, Amare, and Barbosa. It was clear the team wasn’t a championship team; they were, however, a competitive one and given their last attempt as a unit showed clearly that they could compete as one of the top teams in the West.

What do they have now? A 25-20 record. The Knicks comparatively have a 21-25 record, with a horrific lineup.

That seems like a decimation. Point A to Point B.

by McCabe on Jan 31, 2009 10:41 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Who gives a sh!t about a competitive team that loses when it counts...

….every time?? When your window of opportunity is closing more and more and keeps getting slammed shut by the same two teams each year. Kerr tried doing something different and the only reason it’s not working is because guys aren’t buying into the part of it where you have to play defense every night.

In pro sports, being competitive without winning the championship at some point is failure!! If this keeps up it appears that they may reach the same lofty place that the D’antoni led Suns reached…which was watching the NBA Finals at home from their couches.

by Big D on Jan 31, 2009 10:50 PM CST up reply actions

They are both losers!!

06-07’ Bulls team was decent but nowhere near great. It should be obvious to everyone at this point that what we saw was fools gold because we haven’t gotten back to that point. And because Paxson thought they were great he’s fallen in love with our “core”. I like our guys, but if we can get better players then lets do it because we WILL NOT win a championship with this team.

In this league, you don’t strive to be decent. You strive to be great and to win. Now it’s fine to be decent while building toward something (Portland Trailblazers), but if it culminates in nothing and you realize that it’s not going anywhere then it’s time to change direction.

by lexdiamonds0730 on Jan 31, 2009 10:56 PM CST up reply actions

Oh...now I get your argument.

you lengthen your window of opportunity by trading for an extremely old player as your team was clearly in contention for a championship. You attempt to turn your team into defensive stalwarts, despite their having minimal individual defensive skills. Oh and then you trade your best one on one defender for Jason Richardson.

Empirical assertion—statistical backing—even a well constructed argument—any of these things might make this less absurd. But if a team is good and now is bad, that is a decimation. Trying something doesn’t make it right.

by McCabe on Jan 31, 2009 10:56 PM CST up reply actions

ok mccabe. whatever you say.

i was a teenager when the Bulls were winning championships and i remember the feeling of being a champion. i cannot relate to people who are happy simply because their team is “competitive”.

As I said, if you’re a young, up and coming team and you’re “competitive” then that is different. But if you’re a veteran team and the formula isn’t working anymore then you gotta try something different. That’s why the Pistons traded Billups. They got a championship out of it but realized that the conference finals was as far as they could get now. Rather than settling for that, they moved Billups, let Stuckey loose, will let Iverson walk at the season’s end and will start in another direction. You don’t keep banging your head against the same brick wall.

So in this case we truly won’t know if they’re better until the post season. For their sake, I hope they don’t meet the Spurs too early…LOL.

Dude, the Suns suck this year by their standards.

Can’t beat a good team to save their lives. Defensively they are worse now than they were under D’Antoni, and now are so committed to throwing it down to Shaq that they are such a predictable team. Shaq should be used as just another weapon on a deadly team, not the primary offensive option.

And you sound like Rick Reilly with this whole “win 60 games but no ring” bullshit. For 3 straight seasons the Suns were in a position to make the Finals because of their style of play. It’s not Mike D’Antoni’s fault Amare Stoudemire is a lazy egomaniac, or that Shawn Marion was worried about what people thought about him while in the midst of an important playoff series. The Suns might not even make the playoffs, and if they do they would just get crushed by either LA, NO, or God forbid they play the Spurs again.

You made my point for me Ozzie!!

My whole point is that if Amare would up his 21 pts 8 rpg numbers and play some defense then the whole discussion of whether Kerr destroyed the team would be moot. Stoudemire longs to be mentioned alongside Duncan and Garnett. Well seeing the impact Garnett had on the Celtic “culture” and the impact Duncan obviously has on the Spurs, I would argue that if either of these guys were on the Suns then Phoenix would be a much better team. I mean seriously, do you think Phoenix would force feed Shaq if Duncan were on the other block? I doubt it. Hell, they probably wouldn’t have felt the need to obtain a guy like Shaq. And do you think Phoenix would be mediocre defensively if Garnett was there? Do you think Garnett would care about Shaq getting as many scoring opportunities as he does? The answer to both Garnett questions is a resounding no.

My point is that this team should be better…and it’s not Porter’s fault, it’s not Kerr’s fault and it’s not D’antoni’s fault. Porter knows the game and is at least a decent coach and D’antoni is a creative mind. Bottom line is players gotta get out there and get the job done and right now the Phoenix players are too busy complaining about everything under the sun and everybody is too busy making excuses for them. Oddly enough, the only guy on the court for Phoenix being held accountable is Shaq. People continue to talk about what he can’t do anymore while COMPLETELY IGNORING what Stoudemire and Nash don’t do (and never have done for that matter).

by McCabe on Jan 31, 2009 10:49 PM CST up reply actions

How many championships did Phoenix win playing 1000 mph???

Hell, how many NBA Finals did they make playing that way?

Name me ONE NBA championship team in the last 30 years that wasn’t at least decent defensively. The only teams you can come up with are the Lakers (Magic led Lakers and Shaq led Lakers) and the Suns didn’t have anyone as good as the two best players on either of those teams. Besides that though, their style was simply NOT going to win them a championship. So Kerr went in a different direction and if guys on that team would quit crying about how it used to be then they may actually still be one of the better teams. Any team with one of the 5 best PG’s, one of the 5 best PF’s and one of the 5 best C’s in the league should be a top team in the league. Can that really be disputed? It’s on the players and not on Steve Kerr.

Good Lord

They ran into superior teams in 2005 and 2006, and weren’t even at full strength both times. In 2007 they had their best shot, and David Stern fucked them over. Those are excuses, but frankly they are good ones. The Phoenix Suns during the SSOL era were mediocre defensively, not atrocious like everyone wants to believe. Their D Ratings over the 3 years were 17, 16, and 13.

They are a worse team now because Terry Porter is retarded. Shaq is not a MVP player anymore. To base your whole offense around a declining star when you have an amazing PG, PF, SG, 6th man, and a bevy of offensive options is just plain stupid. I liked the Shaq trade, but the style of play they implement is horrible.

So David Stern made Stoudemire cross that line in 2007?

Another excuse for a boneheaded move.

As for the style of play, I’m no Suns fan so I really don’t care. But one thing I do know is that whatever style wins in the playoffs is the style to go with. SSOL was not going to win. As I said before, as long as there are strong defensive teams with a bit of offense to go along with that, the style of play the Suns played was not going to win. They simply could not compete when not allowed to do whatever they want offensively. Works fine over an 82 game regular season where you don’t see teams 4 to 7 times in a row. But when a team can focus on you it becomes ineffective…as we saw.

by lexdiamonds0730 on Feb 1, 2009 2:34 AM CST up reply actions

Results speak for themselves.

They did not win. Second place overall is first place loser!!

by lexdiamonds0730 on Jan 31, 2009 11:03 PM CST up reply actions

Kiss his ass?

I could give two shits about Steve Kerr. If you knew anything about me you’d know I’m big on players taking personal responsibility for their performance. I just feel that with 3 players who are in the top 5 in the league at their respective positions (Nash, Stoudemire and Shaq) and at the very least a solid supporting cast, there is no one to blame but themselves. Now they could use another shooter, but I get tired of people blaming Kerr and the players blaming the system. It’s not the systems fault that Stoudemire doesn’t understand defensive concepts. It’s not the systems fault that whenever the Suns play the Spurs Tony Parker kills Steve Nash. Man up Phoenix!!

by lexdiamonds0730 on Jan 31, 2009 11:15 PM CST up reply actions

The only guy people around here demand play defense is....

…Ben Gordon.

Nash isn’t the only one though. Stoudemire is an even worse culprit. Nash doesn’t have the physical gifts to be a great defender (although it’s less about physical gifts and more about wanting to be a defender), but Stoudemire has everything you could ask for. If someone were to build the perfect athlete, Amare Stoudemire would be close to what you’d come up with. There is NO REASON other than himself that he doesn’t completely dominate just about every night!!! He wants to be great so badly. Well the great ones dominate on a near nightly basis. He is no doubt a damn good player….but he’s still quite a ways from being great.

Stoudemire at 26: 22.3 ppg 8.2 rpg 1.8 apg

Duncan at 26: 23.3 ppg 12.9 rpg 3.9 apg 2.9 bpg

Garnett at 26: 23.0 ppg 13.4 rpg 6.0 apg

Malone at 26: 29.1 ppg 10.7 rpg 2.7 apg

Barkley at 26: 25.8 ppg 12.5 rpg 4.1 apg

Now do you think Nash would have to force feed Shaq if any of these guys were in Stoudemire’s place? Probably not. At 26, Barkley would break Nash’s neck, Malone would score 14 pts on fast breaks alone, Garnett would just get in where he fit in and be a great teammate, while Duncan would just flat out be a better post option than Shaq at 36.

by lexdiamonds0730 on Feb 1, 2009 2:49 AM CST up reply actions

There's no\one issue I would raise here -

STAT’s numbers have been badly depressed since Shaq’s arrival. At the beginning of the year, before Shaq started playing every game, Amare was spoken of as a potential MVP. Last season, largely pre-Shaq, he averaged 25 9 and 2 blocks while shooting 59% from the field. That’s incredible.

Whatever the reason, he’s not getting touches, and he have evidence that when he does, he produces wonderfully.

I only mention this because I want to see Amare continue to struggle, and Luol and Tyrus to continue to rise. So we can trade them.

The poster formerly known as Freethefro.

by MPG on Feb 1, 2009 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

25, 9 and 2 blocks.

For the most part I’ve never had a problem with his offensive output. But the guy doesn’t rebound enough for me (9.6 is his career best while all those guys above have career AVERAGES better than his best season). Also to not be a huge scorer he doesn’t involve teammates enough (as evidenced by his career high 2.1 apg). Now would I take him on the Bulls??? YOU DAMN RIGHT I WOULD!!! He’d INSTANTLY be BY FAR our best player and winning starts with having superior talent and he is no doubt superior talent. I’d give away Deng and Thomas in a heartbeat for Stoudemire. But Stoudemire still needs to do more before he is talked about in the same breath as Garnett/Duncan like he longs to be. Those two are just so much more complete as players than he is….and they were much more complete when they were 26 which makes me wonder if he’ll ever be that way. Is he talented enough to do so? Yes. I’d argue he has more natural physical ability than Garnett or Duncan. But he doesn’t have their mindset and therein lies the difference.

Chicago... Where giving up career nights happens

Some Blazer fans are just ridiculous.

Nocioni has an Olympic gold medal, a bronze medal and a EuroLeague MVP, and now… His legs are broken! Coming to an arena near you.
