Open Game Thread #34: Bulls vs Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota Timberwolves at Chicago Bulls, Jan 3, 2009 7:30 PM CST

They stink, like the Bulls. Bulls are at home so they'll probably win. Maybe the next 4 for that matter.

What I want to see is them actually look good doing it.

If you guys really think about it, there really isn't a bad outcome for this game.

If we win, well it’s a win and we’ll take ’em were we can get ’em. If we lose (to the T Wolves, at home) it would be such a bad loss that it would almost ensure that Paxson would do something to shake this team up.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jan 3, 2009 8:20 PM CST reply actions

last time Pax shook things up

we ended up with Larry Hughes.
not disagreeing with you at all, but here’s hoping he does something positive for the team (like resign)

I think the coaches need to put some kind

of communication device in Noc’s ear kinda like quarterback’s in the NFL. So when he’s dribbling out of control coaches can yell, “Slow down Noc!” or if he’s about to take a stupid three, “Pass the ball Noc!” I think it can help on so many levels.

Couldn’t beat the T-Wolves at home. This is what happens when you hire a guy with no head coaching experience. Vinny has about a year and a half till he’s canned. Same with Pax. Should have known when the Bulls had soo much faith in Vinny that they hired two of the most experienced coaches in the league to baby sit him. If only Hubie sat next to Pax on the that return flight from China.

So because they weren’t winning with him on the court, it’s ok to leave him on the bench because there are far superior players to replace him?

The Bulls were going to lose because they were shooting horribly. The loss is more of an example of how the Bulls are run by someone who has the intelligence of a retarded chimp.

I just think this is closer to the mark

The Bulls were going to lose because they were shooting horribly… not because we didn’t play Tyrus in the fourth quarter.

The complete statement I’d agree with is that the Bulls were going to lose because they were shooting horribly and because they allowed the Wolves to score at will inside.

Tyrus, just like Noah, Gray and Noc didn’t stop anyone. They don’t box out anyone. There’s really not a lot of difference in any of them in the sense that, at the end of the day, none of them get the very basic, fundamental job of being an NBA big man done.

Also

He was playing the bigs fine and helping off his man as well. In the fourth there was a stretch of good defense and bad decisions by the Wolves.

Hughes had at least 2 shots that were ill advised-contested and got the Wolves back on the other side to score.
The whole game Tyrus was taking it to the basket and made his shots from the perimeter. We had a line up of what Rose-Gordon-Hughes- Noce-Noah I think and it was worse than that before.
Tyrus was playing great…kept us in it and was just creating opportunities for us on both sides. There were even some good stops late still but guys were clumsy with rebounds.
I think having if we don’t have Hughes and Noch at 3 and 4 we are better off it’ll be a way better balance.

by Camry on Jan 3, 2009 10:51 PM CST up reply actions

You're missing the point

I’m not saying it was good, I’m saying it had no effect on the outcome.

Suppose the captain of the Titanic, after it struck the iceberg, rearranged the deck chairs to spell out the “Screw U Iceberg!” Would the ship still sink?

Suppose the captain of the Bulls put Tyrus in most of the fourth. Would the Bulls still lose? Probably.
Would Tyrus fair much better, despite his blocks, at helping the Bulls actually control the glass or stop the entire Wolves frontcourt from going off on us? I don’t see much evidence he would, since he did very little of that in quarters 1-3.

De gustibus non est disputandum

by Sports2 on Jan 3, 2009 10:52 PM CST up reply actions

Ok thats not really what happened he did fine in the first 3 quarters

Again Hughes being in there so long he forced 2 shots while we were in good striking distance and the momentum shifted. Tyrus was just on today and was making all the right moves and decisions.
If he was in there would of been a better balance. Instead we had larry in there trying to be a hero and guys having to pass to Gray and Noah. When Thomas could of made something happen going to the rim.

Theres no question it would of had some outcome on the game. Cause Al Jefferson and Love both were afraid to put shots up cause Thomas was killing guys. Would we have won or loss you can never say that. But were we put in the best position to win the game no way.
At the end of the game we were playing fine defensively and they were botching things up. If we have thomas we then get way more versatility and don’t have Hughes disrupting the offense.

by Camry on Jan 3, 2009 10:59 PM CST up reply actions

Um, I think you're missing the point.

Do you realize we probably would have been getting blown out in the first 3 quarters if Tyrus wasn’t in the game? He was wreaking havoc on the defensive end and both scoring and creating opportunities for others on the offensive end. If he wasn’t playing in the first 3 quarters, it would have been really ugly. I’m not sure if you’re really this anti-Tyrus or you didn’t pay attention throughout the game. He was the main reason we were close for a good majority of the time. But okay.

but again, the basic thing he and every other Bulls big man needed to do, he didn’t do worth a damn. Without having a clue how to box out, rotate and help, blocks are like a racing stripe on a beater.

Again, I’m not discounting them entirely… but I just can’t look at that and say he did well when everything was so bad.

If you want, I’ll pipe in that I put no stock whatsoever in Noah collecting a bunch of points and rebounds the last couple games either, on the way to getting completely destroyed.

The “sign of progress” I want to see is us not letting other teams run layup drills.

I just can’t believe that someone would think the outcome of the game would be written in stone either way. At first yeah those blocks were just like “well who cares their about to score again later” but it had an effect on how Al and Love approached the game and just their whole team.

Having the guy who was playing best on both sides by a clear mile on the floor when we were see sawing for the lead no doubt puts us in a good position to win the game. He had around what 7 rebounds 7blocks after 3. That would of been pretty productive.

I have to agree

As good as his help-side blocks were, I thought he did a poor job of defending/boxing-out Kevin Love. 18 and 12 in only 21 minutes?

Again I thought he did fine

If we’re within 1 with like 4-5 minutes left thats pretty good then. Also the number of shots he blocked if he didn’t block them whats that about 16 pts.

Then you have his output on the offensive in along side the extra opportunities he was making on defense. If we had him in the game I don’t see how anyone thinks we aren’t in a better position to win the game rather than having Hughes at the 3 and Noch at 4. We would of been better balanced.

About the argument of ty in the game or not

Yes he should have…even if the bulls were gonna lose that game with tyrus in the game, he should have stayed in the game…

its a coaching rule that should be, well basic….if a player is playing well, keep them in the game. This is now at least the 3rd time vdn has done this. First it was when bg7 went for 18 in the FIRST DAMN QUARTER…he was sat down. Next was yesterday, mr thabo came out of his shell, and especially after his great looking dunk (which didnt count but portrayed what he could/should be) was sat down for playing too well. And now tyrus, with a great effort sits down.

Maybe tyrus is a failed project but that doesnt matter, as a coach one should portray this message, if you play hard for me, if you give me positives from your game, you should remain in the game.

I liked skiles, he pulled guys but at least there was a reason, missed an assignment, didnt follow the play right, were not playing your role or your strength….but boylan and vdn have me confused, whats the reason for subbing?

my only logical explanation is minutes. In 2k9 (sorry guys) if you have rotation subs on, the cpu automatically subs your players depending on how many minutes per game you assigned for each player. Its annoying cuz in close games sometimes real crappy players will be put into the game because they need thier minutes. Or maybe ill have one player who is just on fire and is close to hitting a new milestone, but because im winning the cpu will decide to put in some bench players so they can get thier minutes. I wonder if thats what vdn does. In fact, i wouldnt be surprised if half of vdns plays and coaching book came from 2k9….maybe he is hoping the real rose is much like his video game counterpart, doesnt get tired and is unstoppable….

It may get a bit better when Luol Deng and Drew Gooden return from ankle injuries, perhaps in a week or so, and Kirk Hinrich comes back from thumb surgery in maybe two weeks. But now with six losses in the last seven and at 14-20 and nearing midseason in a downward spiral, it’s not time to give up on the season. But it is time to begin preparing for the future.

Tyrus Thomas, who had 15 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks in a wonderfully active performance, starts and plays at least 30 minutes every game.

With Thomas playing weak side defense like Ben Wallace of five years ago and running the court, I was even glad to see Thomas take a few jumpers. That should be the message. Play defense and run the court, pick up some garbage points and you’ll get rewarded with jump shots. That’s the way it works. I can see Thomas buying in.
Aaron Gray. C’mon, that’s over with. He tries. He’s not a quitter. He’s just not an NBA starter and never will be. Get him out of there. Joakim Noah had five points, eight rebounds and five fouls in a bit less than 15 minutes. Yes, he gets way too many fouls because he gets pushed around because he is so weak and out of shape. So every day at practice he doesn’t practice. He runs. And then he starts. Plays at least 30 minutes, or how long six fouls will take him. He’s at least an athlete. If someone finally teaches him to stop bringing down the ball after every rebound and getting stripped all the time, he can average those 13 or 14 points he did in college. And he’ll run himself into 10 rebounds if he can stay out there. And finish strong! Everytime. C’mon, he had one shot blocked late in the third quarter by Kevin Love, who couldn’t jump over Beach Boys sheet music. Wouldn’t it be nice?
Larry Hughes. Bench, baby! For the remainder.

The guy’s selfish whining is en embarrassment. Who does he think he is? They hated him so much in Cleveland they still were booing him Friday with a 30-point lead. Let him mope making his team most $12.8 million this season.

I'd like to see more ink devoted to Nocioni's atrocious defense

It’s one thing to push him to start at the 3 for the injured Deng, but his defense at the 4 in the Cavs and Wolves game was just awful. He constantly leaves his man when he doesn’t have to. He regularly turns his head towards any opponent that gets in the paint allowing his man to cut back door, roam the baseline to receive, or flush out to the perimeter for a wide open shot attempt. The only thing preventing Noc from looking like a 50 year blind man is the relatively poor play from our opponents ball handler not finding Noc’s man on every possession.

Get Simmons out there. The man can dunk. Noah starts. Simmons is the backup. We have to have a big that can catch and dunk on every penetration into the paint. Gordon, Rose, and even Noc are getting into the paint, getting the ball to our center, and watching their weak shot attempt get challenged or blocked. We have to make these shots. Dunk attempts on all of them.

Larry Hughes cannot play in the NBA. He cannot finish near the rim. He cannot take contact and put up any respectable shot. His jumpshot is voodoo productivity. He also takes Noc’s defensive pills and snoozes his man into a good offensive performance. He doesn’t deserve 1 minute ahead of Thabo. I don’t care how poor Thabo is. He’s twice the finisher at the rim to Hughes. He’s long enough defensively to provide help d or force his man into tough shots.

I give these changes two weeks to occur. If they don’t, I’m going to devote 99% of my comments to the “Fire Vinny. Fire Paxson.” chorus.

Noce has no business playing 4's.

He’s 6’8", (about an inch or 2 shorter than Deng), doesn’t really jump very high and isn’t the most athletic of forwards. Blaming him being unable to guard Garnett or Duncan or Stoudemire is like like blaming DRose for being unable to guard Kobe or Paul Pierce or Lebron.

Varejao or Ben Wallace. Duncan, Amare, Garnett? Please. Nobody is expecting Noc to guard these players. If Noc gets burned by them it’s fine. Those guys burn first team all-defense performers.

It’s the offensive scrubs that burn Noc that make my blood boil. Moving Noc to the 3 full time is a recipe for disaster. He’ll want to guard the 3s from 40 feet in as they simply dribble past him and tear up our defensive rotation. by badnewsintennisshoes on Jan 4, 2009 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

NBA Observer has nailed why VDN is morphing into B^%l#n.

Watching the coaching this year is like watching a rerun of the Night of the Living Dead. I know Vinny and Pax preach development but than do the opposite. Vinny is so overmatched due to abysmal inexperience at any level, he panics and hopes his veterans will bail him out regardless of the mismatches he creates with his unbearable Boylan like lineups.

All the Tyrus bashers keep emphasizing what a bust he is although without his help defense the Bulls opponents would be setting scoring records almost every night. NBA Observer pointed out clearly why Noce and Hughes results do not measure up to their activity. Rose being a rookie, can be excused for his miserable defense and Gordon is who we thought he was.

Sure, Noah and TT get caught out of position but their effort and athleticism make up for a lot of their mistakes and Tyrus was a beast last night. It would help if Rose and/or Gordon would recognize Tyrus when he’s cutting to the rim once in awhile. On those rare occassions when they do, it usually results in either a foul (offensive or defensive) or a basket. Has anyone pointed out that since 12/1 Thomas is shooting 50% from the field and 90% from the charity stripe? And a bunch of fools here want to get rid of him and keep our crap. He’s only 22 and has had very little professional coaching, so take the blinders off. His upside potential is higher than anyone on the roster with the exception of Rose, that is if he is allowed to grow and learn without having to constantly look over his shoulder worrying if the assclowns are going to punish him for whatever transgression they choose. He had zero turnovers last night, folks, I repeat ZERO turnovers.

I know, sometimes Tyrus is moody and lethargic but maybe that’s because he is weak from not being allowed to snack before the games. This is the type of rule other than banning headbands, that bring NBA championships to teams being coached by novices. We can all give Gray an A for effort, but even when he does execute, he will be the last player in the league to ever get a call to go his way because it takes him so long to execute and the referees refuse to cut him any slack.

There must have been a reason that Simmons was such a high draft pick. In his rare opportunities to play, he shows he can finish strongly at the rim and is a definite upgrade in defense with his shot blocking and rebounding skills. It’s time to get him off the bench and play some center or at least some 4 when the Bulls actually have a lead or need a defensive stop. Our guards make everyone an all star and they really have to learn how to take advantage of Tyrus’s athleticism and pay attention to the cutters instead of always looking for their shot first.

Big shot Larry the leper (not leaper) is back to his norm with a 3 for 16 performance the last 2 nights, Ben went back to selfish Ben, and once Rose got hot, why didn’t they just let him take over instead of Hughes firing up atrocious shots with no chance of any offensive rebounds when his air ball or clanker missed badly. Please, can someone give me one rational explanation why he played the entire 4th quarter with Tyrus on the bench in what was probably his best game of the season? I am beginning to wonder if I am going to have to change my signin to IdespiseVinnyNoGutsClueless.

It is still amazing to me why he was in that game

Tyrus at the 4 give you 4 guys who can drive and possibly shoot on the perimeter and you get better defensively. I thought Tyrus was playing fine this season though sometimes he isn’t thinking straight but not many guys on the team are. (also I hope at least that Vinny will stop encouraging him to take jumpers)

Also agree on Simmons

Are you serious

about him being weak because he might not get a snack before the game? He’s not in kindergarten for god’s sake. He’s a grown man and I’m sure he makes sure he eats well on game days. I like TT but man all these excuses are over the top.

by sue369 on Jan 4, 2009 4:02 PM CST up reply actions

exactly

that excuse is terrible. Even Kendall Gill said they are allowed to eat a power bar or popcorn (or PBJ if you’re Gordon). Tyrusmancrush just stop it.

Sorry Sue369. I meant my comment about TT not being allowed to eat to be a satirical remark.

I thought my wife was a literalist, but I can see that she is not alone. It was supposed to be meant as an apparently, lame attempt to point out with sarcasm and so called wit, the equally lame attempt by VDN to take charge and show he is the boss by ranting about Noah, Larry and Tyrus breaking the rule of having a Snickers bar before the big game. His time may have been better spent trying to teach his philosopy on how to defend in the paint and box out for a rare offensive rebound.

I agree completely with your point that Thomas is not in kindergarten and Vinny should therefore act more like an NBA coach and teacher than a kindergarten nanny. Immaturity breeds further immaturity and this can go both ways. I have a feeling that VDN may be losing the respect of the team regardless of his good intention to be a players coach, because they are aware he is not only a paper tiger, but also that he is clueless as well.

I'm just tired of all of this

falling on Vinny. These players are grown men (except Derrick but he acts years older than TT and Noah) and should act like it. It gets really old that some think these poor players are being picked on. They are being paid millions of dollars to show up on time, show up in shape and act ike professionals.

Has he been fined

for moping? Has he been fined by the organization? Do you hear about him violating team policies or being late or not show up for practice? I’ll take moping over all this other crap any day.

he'll never get fined

as Paxson will never get fired. Performance matters not. ;)

Hinrich's fan approval

seems disproportionate to his on the court play. The same is true for Nocioni.

that's like saying that just because I've never been fined for speeding

that I’ve committed no crime. Just because management likes Kirk and refuses to punish him for his insolence and whining doesn’t make it any more professional.

by fundamentallysound on Jan 4, 2009 7:52 PM CST up reply actions

What proof of Kirk being a whiny person exists?

Other than his sourpuss routine after picking up 2 fouls in the 1st quarter or showing his mouthguard who’s boss, I can’t say I’ve ever heard/saw Hinrich being upset.

Vinny Del Negro interviewed for the job today. I mean come on! Nobody else thinks this is nuts?

I agree

my frustration with Kirk is that he was terrible all season, the mopey act was just something fun to rip on :)

Moping and not showing

up for practice, not showing up in shape, mouthing off to the coach are totally different things. If you can’t see that that’s your problem.

by sue369 on Jan 4, 2009 8:32 PM CST up reply actions

I'm with you on this one

Little details like this can indicate how much a person’s into their job. If you’re really excited about a sport you play, haven’t you figured out the best pregame eating schedule long before you hit the NBA? Vinnie has made his opinion very clear on TT and JN’s issues…they appear to not care enough to prepare, and this might have symptomatic.

hmmmmm

Vinny seems like he’s ready for that move. Such a company man.

Vinny is a con man!!!!!
