Lame search for positives

This seems like the low point of the year, and there's enough hating going on, so let's start with the fact that I internalized my rant, and am not happy with the recent week and a half of crappy play.  Now consider the following:

Look at the following schedule, and put any of the non-top-6 teams to this test, and let's see the outcome.  Oh yeah, take out three rotation players w injuries: @ Bos, Utah, @ Det, @ Mia, @ Atl, @ NJ, Orl, @ Cle.  2-6 isn't so bad.  I don't see one game in there that I would have bet Chgo.

Next, let's be realistic, where did you think this team would be after 33 games?  They're 0-9 against the elite teams of Bos, LA, Cle, Orl, and SA.  They're 4-9 against the rest of the league in road games.  This is abysmal, but probably predictable for a team in flux with a complete makeover.  That's 4-18.

I don't have 33 fingers and toes to do the math, but I think that makes us 10-1 playing at home against other than the roylaty of the league.  The worst of the schedule is behind us now.  Looking ahead.

They have 15 games in January.  Only 5 on the road.  Only 2 against the cream.  I thought that they'd have a rough first half, so what's the difference if we found out they're not competitive with the better teams or not even close to competitive?  I've always felt that sometimes it's better to bring a crisis to a boil and confront it instead of living in denial and letting it fester.  Right now is realistically the beginning of the season for this team.

Now, do we want a playoff birth or a lotto pick?  Preseason, I'd hoped for a second half that would produce 23-25 wins and predicted we'd be closer to 50 wins than 30.  But that would only have meaning if the team established its identity, so that future changes could be clearly seen.  I'd prefer to see us finish in the playoffs, regardless of the whumping we'd likely receive.  The year that MJ torched Ehlo for all eternity, they weren't supposed to win one game in the playoffs.

Statistics indicate that some stereotypes aren't really all that accurate.  I've been hearing repeatedly that our backcourt is world-class and the frontourt sucks.  But look at the advanced stats here, which are sortable:  Bulls stats @ BR.com  BG and Rose have the 3rd and 7th ORT, which is good.  But they are 12th and 13th out of 13 in DRT.   Our top 4 in DRT?  TT, Noah, Gooden and Thabo; surprising, eh?  Tops in ORT are Noah and Gray.  PER has Gordon, Noah and Rose on top.  Surprisingly stinky are Deng and TT.  So stat-wise, Noah is ranked first, second and second, but in minutes played?  Eighth, with not even half of Rose's or Gordon's!   Something wrong with this picture.

At this point, VDN looks like a horrible choice, possibly he-that shall-not-be-named-deux.  Noc is rated 12th, 8th and 11th in PER, ORT, and DRT, but 4th in minutes.  I like Noc, and would love to see him land somewhere that he can contribute, but I don't want to see him much this year.  What I'm afraid of is that VDN's vision doesn't fit what talent we do have in the frontcourt, and he's trying to fit round pegs into square holes, and judging them harshly for doing what they were expected to do when they were selected.  Deng is floundering.  Van Lier is calling for dumping TT and Noah.  Geez, so stormin Norman thinks that our two top rated defenders are the problem with this team?  How about the genius that sent out a lineup of Hunter, Hughes, Noah, Noc and Thabo to turn a 6 point deficit into a 16 point first quarter route?

If he's trying to install SSOL, then yes, we need an entirely different set of pieces up front.  Good luck, and we should all change channels until the roster is remade.  And that's the shame of it all to me.  The handling of the personnel seems no better than last year.  The rotations are just as confusing, and I suppose demoralizing.

So, it looks like Pax has to choose between his coach and his roster, and I emphasize HAS TO.  If he's going to give VDN a run, he'd better dump those that don't fit in exchange for whatever's available that does.  Or, cut his losses and look at the available coaches.  Or, the third alternative is to sit Vinnie down and straighten him out.  Nobody gives a hoot if Gooden, Noc and Hughes can play .500 ball; if this team is going to arrive, it will be because Noah and Thomas arrived, and Deng got his mojo back.  If the staff fails that test, they failed, period.  This team can win 10 of the next 15 if they try.  I'll reserve judgment until the end of January.

Losing to the really good teams does not bother me considering the talent available.

Letting every journeyman 4 and 5 have career games against us does.

As for VDN, he still has potential to be better than Tim Floyd, and is still doing a better job than B#*&$%.

Pax needs to blow out the players decidedly not in the Bulls future – trade Hughes and Nocioni for players who can be cut or are content to sit on the bench until their contracts expire in 2010. Trade Gooden or let him go at the end of the year.

The last paragraph says it all

and, in the final analysis, that’s what has me so discouraged. Pax and VDN don’t seem to be on the same page. That’s fatal in any kind of organization. Pax and VDN must sit down at least twice a week and talk about goals, direction, objectives. Pax cannot have the view that he keep hands off as to what’s happening on the court. If the team was set in its direction, maybe. But the whole idea was development and Pax has to be involved, if only to give VDN some cover.

What Pax is doing as to direction and dialogue with VDN has to change.

I'm not so familiar with Offensive and Defensive Rating

And the stats seem like crap. Evidently Andris Biedrins had the sixth best offensive year in history last year, and Horace Grant was better offensively than Michael Jordan. I wouldn’t put any stock into those numbers.

The ratings are about efficiency

It’s not a productivity stat and doesn’t take usage into account.

Good read, I always enjoy your posts...

But I don’t necessarily agree. Just like we all know this team’s makeup sucks, I think Pax and VDN are more than aware of this, and so are all the other GMs throughout the league. I think Pax is trying hard to get something done, but everyone knows GMs always inevitably hold out until the last second to deal. We’re not contending for anything but the low end of the draft lottery this year, so why pull the trigger on an OK deal in January if there’s a high likelyhood that waiting a month will produce greater dividends?

As for VDN, my current issues with him are that he plays Hughes at all and plays Noc too much. I’d like to see Thabo, TT and Noah ALL THE TIME. Not because I think they’re great (I’m not even sure that Noah and TT have the right attitude to be successful in the NBA) but because I think this organization, who has been incredibly slow and stupid evaluating their own talent, needs to decide whether to keep or sell these guys this year. But he was handed a shit roster with little cohesion and he’s trying things. Lately, though mostly due to injuries, he has played Thabo and co more. And we’ve been creamed, and it’s hard to watch, and we hate it. But that’s where he’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t.

I’ll be interested to see what happens to the rotation when Gooden and Deng get back… If Thabo gets sent back to the end of the bench and TT loses his min while Larry stays in the rotation, well then I’ll have much bigger issues.

Also, when you said:
How about the genius that sent out a lineup of Hunter, Hughes, Noah, Noc and Thabo to turn a 6 point deficit into a 16 point first quarter route?

Where you referring to last night’s game @ Cleveland?

Yep

At least according to popcornmachine. I couldn’t keep a feed open online to watch.

by California Al on Jan 3, 2009 1:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that was an anomaly...

I watched the game, at least the first half.

Rose got 2 fouls in the first 80 seconds and even though VDN left him in for a little but, they were going right at him so VDN appropriately pulled him shortly thereafter. So that’s why Rose wasn’t in.

I remember Thabo was pulled for Hughes with 4 min left in the 1st quarter and I was pissed bc he had almost all the Bulls pts so fac and was playing good D at that point, but he was put right back in a few min later.

Gordon was shooting bricks but he was left in until Thabo returned at about the 2 min mark (I think).

And if Noc and Noah came in for Gray and TT in the first it must have been at the very end of it. Gray and TT weren’t doing anything anyways.

And it’s not like they were in the game and only down by 6 before VDN cleared the bench… the Bulls should have got an L immediately after they lost the tip to Ben Wallace. They were never in this game.

Lost the tip to BEN WALLACE?

………
WOW.

"You remember the first time you picked up a basketball video game and you had no idea how to run plays, so you just gave the ball to your shooter and you ran around the court aimlessly until a defender was far enough away and then you jacked up a shot? THAT IS LARRY HUGHES!"

And on that note, WHY THE HELL DOESN'T TYRUS DO THE JUMP BALL?

Do we really think GRAY and GOODEN can out-jump TYRUS? Really? I bet Derrick can out-jump both of them, and TT can out-jump the sum of both their verts.

Your summary of the schedule made me feel better.

However, the last two games have just been horrendous. If we lose tonight, which I see as a possibility the way we are playing, the season is totally lost. At least we seemed to have finally established our identity. We are soft, cannot get stops and are selfish. Not a way to win in the NBA. Anyone who can make me feel better after the last two games gets a rec.

You're breakdown of the schedule

was really well done and a little positivity is always a good thing, but the large problem to me wasn’t the result of those games it was the astonishing fashion which we lost them. We were not even close to competitive in many of these games showing an inability to play team basketball offensively or defensively. Add to that: in-fighting, fining players, injury concerns and an inability to evaluate young talent on the roster and it appears the Bulls have a pretty poisonous situation on their hands. And one that probably won’t be corrected by simply moving on to a friendlier portion of the schedule.

of equal concern to me

is that the Bulls had too many close victories in those home games against crud teams. That makes them pretty much their equal.

Very true

But that’s where I mentally have them niched right now: not as bad as GS, OKC or Min, but certainly worse than the 4-5 seeds from either conference. Which is why I don’t think this year is measured by won-loss. Just like to see them improve their competitiveness as the season progresses. You know the Lakers are my girl on the side; it’s depressing watching them send in subs that are far better than our starters.

"subs that are far better than our starters" so true...

Our starters aren’t starters, but just being paid as so!

yup, that blows, doesn't it?

I was watching a repeat of the Memphis-Minn game today, and I swear, both teams look like they’re a LOT further along than we do. That’s scary.

Neither team has any veterans to hide behind

They are going to play their youngs and be awful….and it’s accepted.

Vinny Del Negro interviewed for the job today. I mean come on! Nobody else thinks this is nuts?

well I'm sure if what you guys are saying is true then..

Theses young teams have other things going for them aside from youth.

Things like:
1) respect for coaching staff
2) maturity
3) unity in the locker room
4) players like one another
5) admired mgmt office
6) thankful, appreciative players and management

All missing from the Bulls team..
(Still I’m big on the need for key veterans.)

I don’t think anyone is mad because we lost to Cleveland, or Boston, or Orlando… We are talking about the best teams on the East, the ones that will fight to win the conference. The problem is the attitude of the players. They only think about himselfs, nothing more. Hughes wants more minutes, Noc makes a lot of shit but blames the others and is creating a terrible environment on the team. He keeps arguing with everyone, criticizing the way the team defend and never recognizes that his lack of attention is a problem too. I said it once, and I will say again: some of theses players don’t stand each other anymore. And if Pax doesn’t trade the "cancers" fast, this might get worse…

A good coach will have them ready to represent themselves more often than not

This is not what’s happening by any stretch of the imagination. So, some sort of turnaround is needed right now. Fortunately, the schedule is going to let up on us for a while. You’re absolutely right about the toxic nature of the present chemistry. VDN needs to decide on a starting roster, and stay with it. And I have a distinct preference that it includes TT and Noah. When everyone’s healthy, some guys are going to have to sit some extended minutes. I’d want Kirk, Thabo and Aaron as the first 3 off the bench, which leaves Hughes, Gooden and Noc sitting and pouting, or better yet, gone.
If, on the other hand, the organization has given up on those two, make it official and trade them. Rose screws up plenty; does he get DNPCD’s? No. Should he? No. You know, the way Thabo got yanked recently in a couple of games that he was playing extremely well, you wonder why he was on the court to begin with. Was he showing Vinnie up by playing too well?

"So, it looks like Pax has to choose between his coach and his roster, and I emphasize HAS TO"

as I continue to express “you give Paxs to much credit”

As a NBA GM, Paxs is a nim-come-poot, as a person he probably is a good man. A replacement GM needs to be hired immediately and Paxson should be reassigned, removed or allowed to retire.

He, “Paxs” appears to not be able any longer to take this pressure.. Give him a break and a year off so he can figure where he belongs post his NBA playing career.

Certainly not as a NBA GM at this stage in his career.

Look, I don't care if he's a genius or a moron

All he has to do is see the obvious and give a damn about this team.

Gooden is out, more minutes for Noah and Tyrus

now all we need is Gray to go down at the same time, and the Tyrus and Noah supporters will start hating on Simmons because his play will be better and earn him more minutes than Noah and Tyrus.

Actually Simmons is better!

Really, Noah is not that bad, he is what he is. No surprises, a real role player who can start, but can easily be replaced or lose his starting position in the NBA.

Tyrus is completely overrated, yet has some talent near the rim and at this point he is in between being a backup and a starter. He can be replaced or lose his starting position to a better player in the NBA on a daily basis. Tyrus is average and nothing to get excited about. The labeling of him as a potential star or superStar early in his career was lunacy. A real mistake pick by John Paxson, while next mega star Brandon Roy (future finals MVP) only gets better.
