Sources: Avery Johnson turns down Grizzlies
Avery Johnson has turned down the chance to make a swift return to an NBA bench with the Memphis Grizzlies.
NBA coaching sources told ESPN.com on Friday that the former Dallas Mavericks coach was offered a five-year contract by the Grizzlies to replace Marc Iavaroni, who was fired late Thursday after 1½ seasons in Memphis.

no established coach
is gonna take over the ship halfway through the season, let alone a crumbling, sinking ship like the Grizz…not smart. He’ll have his pick in the offseason though.

Ditto
I didn’t think Johnson would want to coach a team midway through a season. I do think he’s coaching where he wants next season though.
I think he’d do well for us, but not until Pax is out of the way first.

Skiles was in the same situation when he joined the Bulls, except he didn't have the cushy ESPN job
We have every right to dream heroic dreams. Those who say that we're in a time when there are no heroes, they just don't know where to look.
Ronald Reagan
And George Karl w/ the Nuggets a few years ago.
It happens.

Skiles was desperate for a job IMO
after he was gone from Phoenix, his name was buried until Paxson found it. And actually, if I remember correctly, he took over way before mid-season didn’t he?

Skiles started at the end of November 2003
Looking that up I learned that Skiles was interviewed for the Bulls head coaching position in 1998 before Tim Floyd was hired.

They interviewed Avery last summer and didn't give him the job
Why would he want to come to this shithole now?
Vinny Del Negro interviewed for the job today. I mean come on! Nobody else thinks this is nuts?

Don't underestimate the ego of professional athletes and coaches.
Everyone thinks they can turn a situation around and would love to be a savior. Think Lou Piniella two years ago. 97 losses, yet he came.
The difference, of course, and maybe this is what you were thinking of, is having the full backing and confidence of, AND in, the front office.

I suspect Avery turned down the Grizzlies because he looked and from the top down saw a lack of direction
No commitment, no vision at the top. Conflicting signals about what to do.
Exactly the things he’d see if he looked at the Bulls.
De gustibus non est disputandum
