"The Memphis Grizzlies fired coach Marc Iavaroni after a season and a half, the Commercial Appeal reported Thursday. The Grizzlies will begin the search for Iavaroni's replacement, which will come from outside of the organization. Former Philadelphia coach Maurice Cheeks and Milwaukee Bucks assistant and former Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins will be among the candidates, a source told the Commercial Appeal. Assistant coach Johnny Davis will coach the team Friday night in New York while Memphis conducts a search for a permanent replacement. The firing comes after Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley publicly gave his support to Iavaroni in December. "He's my coach and I'm behind him 100 percent," Heisley said at the time. "I'm not going to evaluate him now. Marc is not under the gun." After some glimmers of hope through the first 25 games -- including O.J. Mayo's fine start -- Memphis has been increasingly uncompetitive, losing 15 of 17. The Grizzlies are 11-30. "We don't have an identity," rookie center Marc Gasol told the Commercial Appeal. "We don't have one. We run around like chickens with our heads cut off. Youth can be a good thing, but we use it as an excuse.""
