Open Game Thread #33: Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers

Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers, Jan 2, 2009 6:30 PM CST

I could not care any less about this game.

They're going to get creamed, and then Deng and Gooden's return will correlate with an easy  home schedule stretch, and the Bulls will win 3 or 4 of the next 5, while Tyrus and Noah play 10 minutes a game in each. Success!

If Ben shoots enough,

there is hope for the Bulls.

I only have a little hope...

because Big Z isn’t playing and I think Varajao is a decent match-up for Noah if he ever see’s the floor

It would be amazing if the Bulls guards...

learned to “attack” the basket like other teams and draw some fouls. Would have been perfect against Orlando but what do I know. I don’t have the coaching resume that VDN has…oh wait I do.

Rose drives, gets no calls.

Gordon is a complete mess when he drives and Hughes is too worried about getting his jumpshots in.

Someone mentioned NBA2K9 the other night

and if coaches weren’t so inherently useless in that game I would’ve fired Vinny before my association even started. I only wish you played the role of Owner instead of GM because Pax’s ass would be on the way out too.

by Protocol on Jan 2, 2009 7:08 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

ha

well in 2k9 you are the gm so i guess pax’s ass WAS fired, and you take over. And yea, in the offseason you can get some of the other coaches on your team. Ivaroni is surprisingly good. Yea but coaches dont really matter, i hope in the next one they give each coach more power over outcomes of the team….coaches are important, as we bulls fans can obviously tell.

I always see he has an easier pass to someone else but then every now and then he tries to force it for some reason.

You can just see the teams problems before the ball even goes up.

They have horrible body language, it’s as if they already lost right when the game starts. Say what you will about the Skile’s Bulls, but at least they had some fucking spirit. This team is the mopiest bunch of losers around.

I just thin it’s annoying that Nocioni gets a free pass for shitty play because it’s assumed he tries hard while everyone else loafs around. Everyone is awful, not just 1 or 2 guys, it’s a whole team effort of poo.

The biggest issue I have right now (off a long list)

Is VDN going away from something that is working. In this instance: He sits Thabo after a very hot and good start, 4-5 shooting, a steal and an assist in the first couple of minutes. And then he sits him?? How are they to maintain any kind of good play??

and then he starts garbage time early playing lindsay hunter and Cedric simmons in the middle of the 2nd q.

by BAB-Bass on Jan 2, 2009 7:56 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I can't get over that no matter how I look at it I don't understand what he was thinking

Plus Thabo is our best perimeter defender and I think helps the ball move at least just as good as the rest of our forwards.

by Camry on Jan 2, 2009 7:59 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Besides

Thabo is the only guard on the team that, when Rose passes the ball to him, he might give it back to Rose. Hughes and Gordon just shoot it up…

Hopefully we hear some post game frustration from the players

Just want to know that they still give a shit

Who cares?

They may show that frustration, but in the next game we’ll see the same shit. Their attitude is so unprofessional. They only give a damm to their minutes, to their stats and their contracts. Nothing more…

D-League, Europe, Africa... Somewhere else

I just don’t give a damm. I knew this was going to be a difficult year, but what we’re seeing is just unacceptable. VDN is not doing what he promised and neither Pax. Our GM promised the fans some moves when Deng and BG issues were solved. Well, two months or so passed, when we still didn’t see nothing…

by bull83 on Jan 2, 2009 9:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Even Rose sucked tonight. :(

Maybe Pax should trade Rose before the general suckage of the team ruins him.

Blame VDN all you want...

… but this team is simply not showing up. That’s on the players. These guys are jokes. Even if the coaching sucked, you should not forget how to play basic defense. Pax should be fired if this team is not radically different by the trading deadline.

It doesn't have to be one or the other

It’s possible that the players are garbage and that Vinny is a clueless moron. Personally I want everyone associated with this franchise other than Rose (and maybe Gordon) gone, including players, coaches, GM’s, and owners (OK, that last one isn’t happening).

Norm Van Lier and Kendall Gill came correct on the post-game show

Hughes, Noah and Thomas are clowns and need to be shown the door. Norm went so far as to question what Noah is doing on a pro team. We can lose without them as well as we can with them. I’d take draft picks and cap relief at this point just to be rid of them. I want to believe that Noah and Tyrus will become something more than they are now, but it’s never going to happen. Cut your losses and move on. The make up of this team is a disaster.

by Stay Chisel on Jan 2, 2009 9:27 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

i was just going to post this

Norm sounds like he should take Vinny’s spot as the head coach and I am 100% fucking serious.

by i_like_turtles on Jan 2, 2009 9:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He also questioned Larry Hughes

saying " he is a veteran of 10 or 11 years but how many teams has he played for? That will tell you about what kind of player he is."

Norm just snapped I love it.

by i_like_turtles on Jan 2, 2009 9:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

And Norm loved Noah against the Nets

This flip flop wastes time. It’s up to the organization to decide either “We have given up on these guys, and we are willing to give them away for whatever,” or “Fuck it these are our guys, we picked them, they WILL succeed eventually.” No decision has been made. Consequently, Vinny is coaching to keep his job (he’s doing a horrible job at impressing anyone in the league though), the players are all playing with their own agendas, and our #1 pick gets stuck with all the bullshit. It’s a crap franchise, and that sentiment starts at the top and trickles down.

You missed 48 minutes of crappy play by the "Cows".

Even Derrick Rose stunk.

To be fair BG had a good game, and Thabo and Noah were decent. Most of the other players put up their numbers in garbage time.

And honestly I now hate VDN...

I mean i have been questioning him since the beginning but that post game interview put me over the edge. How can you spew this BULLSHIT to the fans night in and night out about players being injured and tomorrow when you don’t have ANY signs of improvement? Say something show some fucking enthusiasm and emotion and tell us how you are disappointed with their play! AHHHHHHHH

no, he was fired

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3167808

Then, the “Boylan” era!

The organization had SO much time to find a coach, blew it with D’Antoni, and then embarrassed themselves in pre-announcing Doug Collins, who shunned them as well. They never even interviewed Avery Johnson.

Instead, in the third biggest market in the country, and the most profitable team in the league, they hire a VDN, a guy with NO experience on any level of coaching. They had all that time from the moment Skiles was fired, the Boylan interim time, and beyond.

The fish stinks from the head down. As long as Reinsdorf is the owner, the Bulls, again, the most profitable team in the league, will never go into Luxury Tax for any player, regardless of the fact that the team from the third biggest market in the country is sinking into the third tier of teams, has been in a “rebuilding” phase since Jordan retired, have had a slew of draft choices, and like Rod Thorn, who had the “brilliance” to pick MJ third, after Hakeem, and Sam Bowie (ha-ha!), Paxson took Rose, via incredible luck in the lottery. Can you imagine if they didn’t luck out with that?

They’d be this team with yet another mediocre pick. But, alas, poor D-Rose can’t do it without some help up-front. We all know this, I won’t re-hash that here. Point is, there is only TWO ways that things can change:
1. The team is sold.
2. The fans stay away from the UC until they put a respectable team on the court.

Unfortunately, both of these scenarios seem highly unlikely. So, get used to the losing guys. It’s going to be a very LONG season. What will probably happen is that Reinsdorf will throw Paxson under the bus at some point, bring in a new GM, who will then promptly fire VDN, who can then apply at the local church league for future employment.

Damn! Embarrassing! To think, in the house that MJ built. This bunch of slackers should look up to the rafters some night, and remember what jersey they are wearing.

by rtblues on Jan 3, 2009 5:16 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

With these players I wouldn't want to go into Luxury Tax either

What had they show to deserve more money? Ok, maybe BG deserves what he wants, because he’s our second best player, but as far as I’m concern, the others shouldn’t receive anything. And they can be traded for snacks and chips…

I understand why people like Pax. He turned this team around when he came here, but he already proved that, without his friend Isiah Thomas, he can’t do nothing good. Picking Rose was not a big thing. That was the obvious choice. So, instead of criticizing VDN – despite the fact that he deserves to hear some bad things too -, people who go to the UC should be asking for Pax head. And as much loud as possible

the one nice thing

about the cavs announcers compared to ESPN is they don’t actually talk about how great lebron is the entire time… i swear last game that was nationally televised, they would rather show lebron stretching his ankle out than show the actual game…

but the thing about them is at the end of the game they kept going on about how larry and lebron would have been great together! even if larry were good, his style of play actually isn’t that great next to lebron. but they were going on about how if larry didn’t want to be “the man” then he and lebron could have “ridden off into the sunset.” like no. all the cavs fans hated larry – yet these guys are talking about what a great fit he could have been? i think it was proven otherwise.

I can't believe I'm feeling nostalgic for Skiles

I was as happy to see him go as anyone last year, but after 4 months of He Who Shall Not Be Named, and 2 months of Vinny, I’d take Skiles back in a minute, even with all his flaws.

The ship be sinkin'

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/chi-090102-chicago-bulls-cleveland-cavaliers,0,930211.story

CLEVELAND – The blowout losses and “ole” defenses are leading to slumped shoulders, long faces, sulking body language and, finally, simmering frustration bubbling over.

Andres Nocioni and Joakim Noah spent several minutes bickering on the court over a blown assignment during the third quarter of Friday night’s dreadful 117-92 loss to the Cavaliers. The players then continued shouting at each other during a subsequent timeout.

“We talked a bit,” Nocioni said in an angry Bulls locker room. “Frustration; that’s it. We don’t win. We don’t play good. It has to stop.”

Larry Hughes later played peacemaker, pulling Noah aside to try to calm him down.

“When you’re playing and losing by 20 points, you’re frustrated,” Noah said. "In the heat of the moment, things are said. But I don’t have any problems with ‘Noce.’ "

They have a lot of weapons? Um like Varejao and Ben Walace?

I’m sorry you put Lebron on the Bulls you would have a title team.

Take Lebron off Cleveland they might be the worst team in the league.

And the cavs didn't have Zydrunas Ilgauskas

I mean he would have dropped 50.

JJ Hickson dropped 13. He played all of 10 minutes in the 4 games prior.

Lorenzen Wright dropped 2 buckets. he played all of 4 minutes in the 4 games prior.

Season high in scoring for 4: JJ, LW, Anderson Varejao, and Big Ben
Career high for JJ and AV.

Cleveland has 2 other respectable players. Big Z (injured). Mo Will (2-9fg 11pts). Lebron had only 16. But the bulls still were absolutely embarrassed giving up 117.

VDN is a joke. He is the worst coach in the city including the upper tier high schools, college, and church league teams.

Noah and TT lack the strength and size to box out,

while Gray lacks the speed.

The front court is so bad at this point, the Cows should play Ced Simmons and trade Hughes to the Whiz for Etan Thomas and junk. Thomas is a near scrub on the Whiz, but would likely be the best front court defender and rebounder on the Cows.

There is no lack of physical traits

The big guys are idiots on the defensive side of the ball. Tyrus is a good weak side helper, but that’s only if the other big man is actually good at his job. The Cavs don’t run the triangle, all they do is run tons of stuff out of the high post and use backdoor cuts and dribble penetration. Every game it looks like the Bulls have never seen this shit before.
