Never was a fan of Dan McNeil but I'm shocked to read he's out at 1000. You can put him and North in a boat and send them on their way down the river of burnt out Radio voices. He always seemed to have a negative tone when talking about the Bulls. I wouldn't be shocked if he joined the monsters in the morning and you thought Jiggs wasn't getting a chance to talk just wait. On the clock Mike Murphy!

Couldn't agree more

I always kinda liked the show as a whole, but Mcneil particularly was always talkin’ shit about the Bulls. He was another blowhard just like North, it’s a shame that radio popularity doesn’t usually lend itself to people that make smart, well thought out observations. I was watching North’s new piece of crap this morning and he was complaining about Tyrus’ poor play against Cleveland. Jackass.

There isn't enough oxygen on this planet for North and Mac, because we need it.

North and McNeil just talk out their asses. They really can’t hold back. North only listens to himself and McNeil wants to argue with anyone.

I’m glad their gone!

MJH was like finger nails on the chalk board. Just old and depressing. I don’t think Mac ever left the 70’s. Mike North do you have a freaking tie? I mean what’s with the shirts from target?

by ImmanuelKant on Jan 17, 2009 2:10 AM CST up reply actions

Yea, North has a bit of an image problem.

A middle-aged man, named “pappy”, that dresses like a 17 year old high school kid. Who talks like he’s Italian, but has an Irish name. Who’s married, yet constantly flirting (awkwardly) with his much younger producer/co-host.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jan 17, 2009 2:19 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah

He was always very anti-Bulls, even in 04-05-05-06-06-07, while I don’t think anyone would have said we were favorites to win, he was always so freaking negative about the Bulls, it was a bit much.

Still rather surprising. I liked him a lot more than Mike North, but was not a huge fan.

This guy made $600K?! It blows my mind how much these radio guys make. Sports radio never breaks stories. It’s just all fake controversy and arguing for argument’s sake sandwiched between what seems like hours of commercials. That whole format is pointless and I stopped listening to sports radio years ago. If I need a dose of ignorance I’ll read the ESPN boards.

by Stay Chisel on Jan 17, 2009 8:16 AM CST reply actions

I was going to say $600K seemed too little

His show dominated his timeslot for nearly his entire tenure. It doesn’t matter if he breaks stories, he built a huge fanbase that now know all about John Chico’s mensware.

by YaoPau on Jan 17, 2009 9:03 AM CST up reply actions

im glad, u guys are right

he would always claim that he could care less about the NBA. then the next day he finds faults in the bulls and just brings up stupid stuff. his constant complaning about things were real annyong. it would seem that hes just wise about anything in the world (not just sports) i gotta say i am very happy.

i can listen to that station again!!!

his constant bull bashing and his annoying tone was too much to bear. glad he is out!!

by Fastbreak on Jan 17, 2009 9:20 AM CST reply actions

Yeah I would see this as a good move when your tired of down the dial. B&B have their moments

but they can be kinda be Snobby or Highbrow. Mac was the biggest reason I didn’t listen to 1000. But I have to say they do talk more Bulls then 670 as they are the flagship. I mean Mac seemed to bounce around a lot and was hard to listen to lately, his music and movie reference where very outdated. I think Harry and Jurko are really Bulls fans. So this should be a good move.

by ImmanuelKant on Jan 17, 2009 10:49 AM CST up reply actions

One less dumbass on the Chicago airwaves

Still he was a big reason why ESPN 1000 was always successful. He knew nothing about basketball, and his football and gambling advice is Simmons-esque. Harry has equally horrible opinions about the Bulls, but at least he legitmately knows about them (though he made a horrible error last night. They were talking about if MJ would ever have a bad game like LeBron did, which he obviously did. Harry brought up the Jazz/Bulls Finals game where Chicago won by like 40, yet he stated they lost by 40.)

What????

Mac was the kingpin of that show. Yea he didn’t like Da Bulls but who does right now? Mac was one of the few radio guys to ask the tough questions to players/coaches/GM’s. John Paxson stopped coming on the show because Mac would ask him the tough/right questions that Bulls fans wanted answered. Paxson just appeared on the Mully and Hanely show and they gave him a cake. They did not even let listners call and ask him questions. Mac was what Chicago fans needed. I’m sure Paxson is jumping for joy today. By the way Jurko couldn’t care less about Da Bulls. I doubt he ever even watched an entire game. And Harry will be optimistic about any team even if they have not won a championship for a 100 years.

When you say Wisconsin, you've said it all.

by Looney_Bucky on Jan 17, 2009 1:15 PM CST reply actions

Jurko is not a Bulls fan. either

And if MAC was so crucial to the show, he would have been signed again. I hope they talk less Hawks ( I just happen to be a Bulls fan that dislikes Hockey to the max) and just hearing anyone talking Haws gets me sick. In fact, I sent emails to the station criticizing their love for hockey and their hate for NBA. What I think is fair is that they cover the NBA sometime. They have done it more lately. Maybe my nagging has helped!! Anyway.. one blowhole is better than two.

by Fastbreak on Jan 17, 2009 3:11 PM CST reply actions

Right on Fastbreak

I don’t understand why the city would embrace the Hawks given that the old owner blacklisted the games from TV for so long.

I mean sure the games are fun to see in person, but this sudden (we like the Hawks) is a bit much given what that org has done to its fanbase over the years….

I am glad they are winning, but hated the fact that nobody dared say that that franchise did more to irk its fan base than any other….

But to give them heaps of praise and the Bulls nothing is ridiculous….I mean the Bulls are still this city’s most succesful (in terms of championships) of the big 4….

Uh, 9 > 6

Bears have won 9 championships (granted 7 were in the leather helmet era).

B and B for basketball

Boers and Bernsie are so far ahead of anyone else when breaking down Bulls, NBA, and college BBall its a joke.

Hood is the man I'll give you that

Boers and Bernstein can get annoying as well, but still so much better than anything on ESPN 1000.

Who are B&B?

I tend to listen to AM 1000 by default, even though I’m not a huge fan of either Mac, Jurko and Harry or Mike & Mike, but I guess I liked Mike and Mike more than Mike North, so that converted me….

Are B&B on the score? What time?

Sorry, I don’t know these things.

I did like Harry on that show, he was a bit comical, Jurko wasn’t bad too even if he was mostly there to agree with Mac, but Mac was my least fav….

Boers and Bernstein

Their Bulls talk gets a bit simplistic at times (they suck, I get it) but they at least talk about and like the NBA.

It’s not a show for everyone, lots of giggling and inside jokes. But most sports radio by comparison is bland and awful.

If you like reading stuff here

It’s like a simple version of the posts here. As in very sarcastic, at times funny and insightful.

J. Hood is the man

J. Hood ought to get more opportunities.
It seems like everybody hates Mac for his lack of NBA/Bulls love. I find that there is barely anyone in the Chicago sports media that talks a lot of Bulls and/or has supported them since the dynasty days. I’m a huge Bulls fan and they were my first favorite team in any sport (I was born in 1990). But truth be told before the dynasty the Bulls were behind the Blackhawks in popularity. Even in 1992, the Blackhawks were as big as the Bulls when both teams made the finals. I don’t know why the Bulls are not more popular in Chicago. People mistakenly believe that they are really popular because the UC always sells out, but that is because it is a small stadium and that many businesses use it to entertain clients. Whenever I go to restaurants/bars I never see the Bulls on when they are playing. It is a sad state of affairs right now.

When you say Wisconsin, you've said it all.

This is taken from one of the Fanposts from the Bears Blog Windy City Gridiron

A day after Angelo appeared on both the Mully and Hanely show on 670 the Score and the Mac Jurko Harry show on ESPN 1000, he is jumping for joy. Why? Because ESPN has canned Dan McNeil (Mac). If you haven’t heard both interviews I would suggest going to the websites and listening to them. On the Score Angelo is given lollipops instead of questions by Mulligan and Hanely. Mulligan is a Bears writer and reporter and needs to stay on the good side of Angelo. So he attempts to ask the tough questions but phrases them such that Angelo does not look bad. On the other hand on ESPN, Angelo is questioned rightfully so about controversial decisions. Of course he denies much and ignores the rest, but in the end he is the one looking bad. It was Mac who was asking him the tough questions, the ones fans want answered. Angelo barely appears on that show (Paxson despite having been good friends with those guys, won’t come on). Because of the show’s high popularity, these GM’s are pressured into appearing, and they for sure do not enjoy it. But what do fans want a suck up reporter who is afraid of getting on the bad side of an interviewee asking the questions or a guy who is a regular fan and a master radio personality asking the questions. The removal of Mac is a sad thing for Bears fans, excluding the Bears GM. Another example of how Mac was one of the few Chicago sports media people to be real with the public is his criticism of Brian Urlacher. Nobody else dared consistently criticize the #54 who Bears fan never heard speak except maybe during a commercial.
