Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

It was revealed that the league office had foiled an attempt by Portland to claim Miles off waivers with the intent of stashing him on their inactive roster for the rest of the season.

There goes the high road argument from Portland fans.

What was that about how they didn’t mind if a team actually wanted him to play and they wouldn’t try to harm his career?

How do you know they didn't want to play him?

They wouldn't play him because 3 doctors (Theirs, the NBA's and the NBAPA's) said he shouldn't

The Blazers would take the high road and bench him for his own good.

No one does

I have no idea what’s going on with this Miles crap. Some folks on Blazers Edge think the Blazers tried to grab Miles for their appeal after Miles hits their capspace. Like I said, I have no idea what the Blazers are doing with this. I imagine in about a week Jason Quick from the Oregonian will try to explain it all.

i was reading about this at BlazersEdge

you guys certainly have your hometown blinders on. The guy is obviously healthy enough to play. When they were trashing him all summer, was that also for his own good?

by Basketball Smurf on Jan 14, 2009 9:48 AM CST up reply actions

Miles is a douche bag

Portland fans haven’t liked him since he called Coach Cheeks the n-word. Blazers fans were trashing Miles because when he was on their roster and hurt, all he did was get fat instead of rehabbing.

No one gives a shit if Miles is healthy enough to play. He didn’t play for two years and three doctors said he should never play again. So the Blazers, three doctors, and Miles all agreed that he should medically retire. After that, he took a bunch of diet pills, lost weight, and started playing.

I don’t see anything wrong with sending an e-mail as an attempt to save $9 million dollars in capspace and paying the luxury tax. I also don’t see anything wrong with Miles trying to play and I guess if I was a fan of a crappy team, I wouldn’t mind my team trying to screw over Portland’s capspace for the sake of screwing them over and to get their share of the tax money.

Some Blazers fans are trying to rationalize the Blazers actions and non-Blazers fans are blowing it all out of proportion. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

by tominhawaii on Jan 14, 2009 10:06 AM CST up reply actions

no the truth isn't somewhere in the middle

Its pretty clear cut. the guy can play. he wants to play. Portland is trying to screw him over and prevent him from playing. First by claiming him off waivers and than by sending a ridiculous, unprofessional, laughably dumb email. If they didn’t want to pay Miles his money, they shouldn’t have signed him to the contract. I don’t care about his personality. Obviously Boston and Memphis care if he can play.

The email was tampering. It was interfering with his right to work. If it had worked, Miles likely would have had a pretty good lawsuit against the Blazers. Thankfully, for the blazers, it didn’t come to that.

by Basketball Smurf on Jan 14, 2009 10:38 AM CST up reply actions

Did you read the e-mail?

It said “don’t sign Darius to screw the Blazers,” it didn’t say “don’t sign Darius if he can play.” Darius is getting his money, the e-mail was about his salary going against their cap and then having to also pay the luxury tax. A stupid e-mail was free to send out and had about a 1% chance of working, but it could have saved the Blazers millions. It was legal, it was not unethical, it was brazen and maybe not well thought out. If it was tampering, the NBA would have at least fined the Blazers and they did not. People are making a mountain out of an e-mail molehill.

When 3 doctors, the NBA, and Miles signed the papers that Miles could not play, the Blazers took action to get him off their roster and off their cap. That was good business.

I'm a Blazers fan and If you ban me from your blog, I'll sue you!

by tominhawaii on Jan 14, 2009 11:11 AM CST up reply actions

it was unethical

the blazers could never prove that someone signed Miles just to screw the Blazers. Regardless, if the email had worked, Miles would have had a claim for tortious interference with contract. The league didn’t fine the Blazers, but they have to be embarrased by their actions.

You keep talking about these doctors. That is completely not the issue. The doctors were wrong, Miles got 4th, 5th and 6th opinions and he was medically cleared to play. Any actions by the Blazers to prevent him from playing are unethical in my opinion. And that was clearly their intention. Why else would they try to claim him off waivers? Give me one good reason why they would claim him off waivers except to sit him on the bench and thereby damage his future career prospects. Take off the blinders

by Basketball Smurf on Jan 14, 2009 12:12 PM CST up reply actions

I don't got blinders on you do

I said I don’t know why they claimed him off waivers. There’s the link for you.

The Blazers never took any actions to prevent Miles from playing, they took action to warn teams not to sign him just to screw them over.

Question for Smurf

I’ve read lots of claims along the lines of “Miles got 4th, 5th and 6th opinions and he was medically cleared to play” but I’m having trouble finding links to verify this. Do you have any links for me?

by Corvid on Jan 14, 2009 2:16 PM CST up reply actions

i have no links

but i have eyes. The man played last night. He scored 13 pts in 13 minutes. He didn’t explode. Memphis let him onto the floor, saw no potential liablity, and no paramedics were called. He is healthy. Yeesh

the celtics and memphis had his knee skoped first? or just making it up?

to continue

the Blazers trying to claim him off waivers makes each of your points ridiculous. Either they didn’t believe their own doctors, and thought he could help them. (Total bullshit).

Or they were going to claim him off waivers and stash him no matter what. So if Aldridge, Batum, Outlaw etc all got hurt they were STILL NOT GOING TO PLAY HIM. That is why the league stepped in and prevented the blazers from claiming miles off waivers.

Sometimes the organizations you root for do shitty things to people. Accept it and get over it.

by Basketball Smurf on Jan 14, 2009 12:15 PM CST up reply actions

I don't have to accept shit

Here’s the link saying I don’t know what they were doing regarding trying to grab Miles. And it doesn’t matter if they believed the doctors or not. He didn’t play for two years and they found a way to get him off their cap, when teams tried to get him back on their cap, the Blazers took action. I’m not defending their actions, just explaining why they sent the e-mail.

My point has nothing to do with claiming Miles off wavers and everything to do with the e-mail.

I'm a Blazers fan and If you ban me from your blog, I'll sue you!

dude the email and claiming him off waivers

are obviously connected and go to the point of them trying to prevent him from playing. The Blazers obviously don’t want Miles on the roster, they don’t have playing time for him, he has no future there; so please answer my question: Why do you think they would attempt to claim him off waivers if they did not want him on the team? Duh…. To prevent him from playing.

They didn’t want to him to play for another team so they try to claim him and stash him on injured reserve. The NBA stops them. Than they send out an email threatening any team with a lawsuit who signs Miles with the purpose of hurting the Blazers. (Which is a flimsy claim at best, frivolous at worse). Put 2 and 2 together.

I’m done having this conversation with you. You are either being purposely daft or that is just your genetic disposition.

by Basketball Smurf on Jan 14, 2009 1:00 PM CST up reply actions

I get it, because I'm looking at the big picture

Of course they wanted to sign him to keep him from playing and the e-mail had nothing to do with keeping him from playing. Like I said in my first comment, I don’t know the exact reason for trying to claim him off waivers, because obviously the NBA would put a stop to it, that’s why some folks at Blazers Edge think it is the Blazers setting up grounds for an appeal. So even though they don’t want Miles to play, I still don’t know why they tried to get him.

You called an e-mail waning GM’s not to sign Miles just to mess up Portland’s capspace or be sued “unethical,” but you’re fine with a team signing a player and playing him two games just to mess up another team’s capspace. If the e-mail was written to prevent Miles from playing, then the NBA would have already fined them and the union would have raked them over the coals. The Blazers have not done anything wrong, they’re just trying to protect their capspace.

Anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that the NBA would not let the Blazers pick up miles and that it would almost be impossible to sue someone for playing Miles unless they did it for just two games, including the Blazers management. This is all posturing for something bigger. If you read the other posts on this, I thought it was because the Blazers were trying to bring media attention to this and I still think it is partially true. There is more going on behinds closed doors than we know about. I’m sticking with main opinion from this thread, that I don’t know exactly what is going on.

I’m glad your done with this conversations because I am too.

dear lord - one last thing i swear

media attention! they are being ridiculed by everyone except portland fans. If they wanted media attention, why didn’t they send the email to the media? Why didn’t they just hold a press conference?

and how do you know Memphis is trying to screw up Portland’s cap space? There isn’t room for 6’9 former lottery picks in the NBA. On talent alone, Miles was eventually going to make someones roster.

Portland gambled and they lost. Please stop whining about it

toms not whining

but hears a question, how do you know that memphis isnt trying to screw portlands cap space? your nsistant that the blazers are acting unethicly, but defend any team that might be sighning miles (acording to one east coast gm) specificly on the grounds that it cant be proven. huh? we in portland know its bad, but have a lot more realistik view then your demonstrating. you simply believe what you want to, probably cus its easier then thinking.

by maid tu rek on Jan 14, 2009 3:46 PM CST up reply actions

i don't know that

but it doesn’t matter. They are free to sign him. Screwing Portland’s cap space isn’t against the law. It is a violation of the law to prevent someone able to work from working, its called tortious interfence with contract; it is not a violation of law to screw someone’s cap space.

I don’t believe what I want to. I’m just not blind to facts like Portlands fans have become on this issue

by Basketball Smurf on Jan 14, 2009 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

and this isn't about Memphis

its about Miles right to work. He is capable of playing in the NBA. He is healthy. He has the necessary skills. Why shouldn’t he be allowed to play? Why shouldn’t an NBA team sign him?

If you can answer those questions maybe I would take your arguments seriously

by Basketball Smurf on Jan 14, 2009 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

i agree that miles should be aloud to work

i also contend that the blazers should have the right to defen their capspace, since it directly effects the profitability of their buiseness.

you seam to think that miles should have the right to work, and that other teams should have carte blanche with alens wallet.

your concluding that becouse miles can jog up the court, that the doctors are wrong. thats like saying that just becouse my car starts and will take me down the road that theres nothing wrong with it. thats silly, especially if youve had several mechanics tell you that your transmitions shot, and if you try and take your car accross country, that youll likely find yourself stranded.

yeah, im sure that some team doctors have looked at miles and said, sure this car starts. thats not the point, well, its your point. but the problem is just what were the blazers suposed to du? were they suposed to play miles anyways???? "look kid, the dr sais if you keep playing on this thing, your gonna need nee surgery, but, well, we dont care. and anyways, he sais you can play right now, but he just dusnt know how much longer you hove before your knee blows, so what du ya say kid, wanna play? pshh, whatever.

portland did about the only thing they could be expected to do, and miles went throug the procedings knowing full well what he was duing, some time after word, he changed his mind and wanted to play basket ball. good for him, woo hoo. im all for making a come back, its a great story, and with out change, ide still be a peice of shit criminal with no future, so go get some miles, its about fucking time you grew up. but your contention is that portland is unethicle for trying to secure their assets??? that smacks of jealously.

i kan tell you that portand never tried to hurt miles’s job prospect, cuz look, he has a job. look he can play. what can you prove??? nothing. im aware of both sides of the coin, but you are willfully ignorant

They LIED!!!

what the blazers were suppose to do

is not sign him to that ridiculous contract in the first place. The fact that Miles didn’t sustain a career ending injury and therefore save them from their own stupidity is something I don’t shed tears over. All that is happening is that Portland is made to use cap space on a contract that they freely signed. If Miles had never been hurt, he would still be on Portland’s team, counting against their cap. I’m sorry Miles injury didn’t save the Portland organization from their own stupidity.

Listen, goget hooked on phonics than respond to me. I showed how Portland was trying to hurt his job prospects up thread. If you refuse to see how benching a guy for a year when he is trying to make a comeback hurts his future job prospects than that is your problem.

Are all Portland fans this stupid?

I don't get how you guys can claim they didn't try to hurt his job prosects

when they tried to claim him and stash him on their inactive list all season.

by JeffD on Jan 14, 2009 10:15 PM CST up reply actions

It is ridiculous to look at those 2 actions in a vacuum

Trying to claim him off waivers and stash him on the inactive roster is pretty damning circumstantial evidence of what they were trying to do with the email. I understand what the Blazers said about the email afterwards, that it was just if a team was planning to screw with them, blah, blah, blah, but that argument is completely undercut by their actions of trying to claim him. You guys can keep your head in the sand and think the Blazers are squeaky clean on this one, but there is a reason everyone outside of portland is rooting for him to play his 10th game.

by JeffD on Jan 14, 2009 10:20 PM CST up reply actions

I was joking

Like I said above, I don’t know what the hell the Blazers were doing there but some folks at Blazers Edge think it’s part of building a case for an appeal.
