The fact that he is retired, or that even in his late forties he would probably be the best player on the team.

I'm not sure about the "his lack of a true challenger"
I think its because he shot all of them down when they faced him. Malone-Stockton-Clyde-Barkley-Ewing but I guess I can see where hes coming from.
