Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

I'd throw Scott up against any coach in the league. We ran a collegiate-style program, and shaped rookies the right way. It was fun to be a part of that.

Collegiate-style program?

Yeah, that’s really what you want in the NBA…

I'd say

For a 3 to 4 year time frame, Skiles can be as good as any coach in this league….but he’s still too harsh on the players to the media (I don’t care about how he is to them behind the scene’s) but he was ridiculous to them in the media and that waned on them.

He might have more success in Milwaukee by the end (At least iwth the players) because the media in Milw is nothing and nobody in Milwaukee even reallyc ares about the Bucks (whcih is sad considering how now that the Brew-crew have a decent team, they’re selling out)….

But for a time there Skiles was a great coach for our team.

I do think thought hat he has a real problem developing players. He tends to force young guys to learn how to play in his system only, and that stunts their true development.

You know, I'm going to buy that to a degree.
  • Year 1. Hinrich. Major minutes as a rookie.
  • Year 2. Gordon, Deng, Duhon, Nocioni. Major minutes as rookies on a 47 win team. Unprecedented.
  • Year 3. No major rookies, but continued major minutes of the above. Made the playoffs despite having the middle of the team amputated three weeks before the season.
  • Year 4. Thabo and Tyrus, had, in my opinion, successful rookie years. The progressed from little playing time to regular time. Tyrus more than Thabo, but Tyrus was a better player and Thabo was even more buried behind quality players than now.

So there’s a lot of truth there.

Year 5… well, everything fell apart. There’s no year five in college.

it went good until graduation

Tyrus got ignored in the playoffs.

In comes dean Wallace, then we know the rest.

of course they got major minutes

there was no one else on the team!

see my comment below though. i don’t really hate skiles and he did some great things for the team. but i can still hold against him the things i think he didn’t do right.

Thomas only got time because Nocioni got hurt for a month.

Necessity… not development.

Wow "ron adams" is now an authority...

Adams had one of the worst records in the history of the college basketball program he briefly coached. I believe it was New Mexico State or something…

What is he “filler space” floating around as an non threathing assistant.?

man up!

Skiles is a defensive guru

You have to hand it to Skiles. He took the Bucks from 30th in the NBA in defense, to 7th this year.

That's true, he's one hell of a talented coach

Looking back, I don’t know how he pulled 49 wins out of Hinrich, Gordon, Deng, Wallace. There may not be a better get-my-shitty-roster-over-.500 coach out there.

Good point

They’re really similar, both in coaching style and the level of annoyance they create in their players – I’m surprised I haven’t heard that comparison before.

Not just defensive

I remember a bunch of analysts and writers credited him fore being a master with xs and os. Give him 20 seconds, and he can think of a bunch of different ways to score and plan on how to get back on defense. My friend always said that if a player bought into skiles system, he would play better than he normally could. The only problem always seemed to be buying into his system. Good obediant soldiers were needed for skiles to succeed i think, and once you got the likes of tyson chandler, tyrus thomas, thabo (guys who were either immature or guys who tend to hide in shells when not sheltered) or ben wallace (high paid, low effort, needed to be catered per Paxdorf) it all came apart. I always thought of him as batman as a coach…or something to that affect.

On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, majoyenrac, Bullshooter and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light!

Yeah

But he got stale with his offense. He was good drafting up something new from time outs, really good, but aside from that his team played the same 3 plays every game…..drive and kick and switch the components….little ball movement, little guys besides the 2 involvled in the drive and kick moving without the ball, and too much reliance on the Skilesian crap of Malik Allen’s, Adrian Griffin’s etc that Skiles likes because they’re closer to him, guys who weren’t all that talented as players but worked hard every game……Skiles though was more talented than his guys have been.

it is nice what he’s doing in Milwaukee.

I hear Charlie V’s on the block, I think a Drew for Charlie V swap would be nice. Skiles ain’t coached Drew before either…..
Charlie’s as good an offensive player who has a worse rap on D, but probably isn’t worse than Drew, and Charlie can be far more explosive on O

Skiles isn't a genius

Most NBA coaches can design plays that lead to immediate scores, that’s their job and the good ones know how to exploit defenses. It’s a sad statement on Skiles that he can work well with all the nice guys, but when one apparently lazy guy joins the team it all falls apart. You’d think the all powerful my way or the highway Skiles would have had more control in his locker room.

the thing is

i don’t hate scott (larry, or ben wallace) as much as most of the people do on this site. i probably only hate b***** equally. but as well as he had the team playing, they fell apart while still under him and all we were left with was a bunch of fragile egos. i can’t see that as a success. he broke down tyson and sefolosha too.

he does some really good things, but i dunno. that comment just kinda made me laugh though.

by Jaina on Jan 12, 2009 8:53 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

Skiles broke Tyson CHandler, which is the whole reason we made the Wallace trade….and I’m sure Skiles was a big part of that for Ben Wallace was a Skiles type of player through and through (workhorse for a time who wasn’t all that talented, though Wallace was pretty damn good for a while)….

So Skiles lost Chandler, and then the next year lost Thabo, and then the next year lost Wallace, Gordon, Deng, Joe Smith (Even though Smith was playing well he was with Walalce and Deng the harshest Skiles critics), Hinrich, Hinrich, Hinrich, Hinrich, Hinrich, Hinrich…..and Tyrus and Noah were a mess under Skiles.

He’s a good coach but he burns on players. Keep the name calling and ragging on players behind the scene’s or at least not EVERY single commentary…..I mean even when we were winning 49 games, Skiles would find ways to rag on his guys…..except for the Body, even though the Corpse died….but that might have been because Pax was looking for a trade.

Developing college players means

teaching them to how to be professionals – putting their teams first, giving a full effort every game.

Developing NBA rookies means teaching them how to be leaders. And our little general missed the boat on that one.
