Ben doesn't like these character questions

He’s got a great point. Has BG ever showed us anything that would remotely indicate that he would pout during a season among his fellow players, aka pollute the locker room?

what a weird question too

I think it was KC. He basically said: “well I’m not saying this, but if you heard people say that, would it offend you?”

he writes his articles the same way

he tries to pass off his own opinions as things that “people would say”…it’s pretty obvious.

I have no more use for KC ever since the “Tyrus, who will be shopped…” thing.

fo sho

KC should have known better. terrible question, but gordon answered it perfectly. that is the last thing i am worried about with ben, he has acted like a pro ever since he arrived 4 years ago.

I'm kind of starting to think Ben is going to take the 6/59

And he’s waiting to the last minute just to see if the Bulls make a last gasp effort of a few more mil…anyone else on this thought train?

Yeah

Although it looks like the Bulls might be willing to raise it a bit too. Offer more, but only at the last minute so it feels like a major breakthrough. Likewise I agree Gordon could be coming down a bit.

I could see the Bulls going to 6/$66M and Gordon saying yes pretty quickly. Both sides give up a bit from where the wanted, but they’re also staring into a pretty unfriendly future otherwise.

Yeah, I think both sides realize they're screwed

if they don’t come to some agreement in the middle of the road. By the way Pax and Ben were both talking, it really seems to me like something will happen. Especially when Ben refused to say whether or not he was considering the long-term offer currently on the table. And also, Pax saying he was basically in constant contact with Raymond Brothers. I’m hopeful.

yeah you'd think he wouldn't even talk to Gordon's people

if they were really asking for $75m like Hanley reported this morning.

Exactly. I think that number is a farce.

I’m liking S2’s $66 mil number right now. Seems like it could work.

Why would the Bulls raise their offer?

I know this is a negotiation, but they are the only ones offering. Its not an open market negotiation, its a closed market negotiation. If they want to pay $11 million per season, they can wait until next summer to see if the market will dictate that as his value…which they tried to do this past summer, and Gordon received zero offers.

I like Ben Gordon. I think $59 million is overpaying for him, but $66 million is grossly overpaying for him…and when it comes time to move him, we will have to include another asset in the deal to get another team to bite…Raising the offer would be a bad move from the Bulls and send a bad message to the rest of the players moving forward.

There is a good chance this has come up but...

Isn’t it possible for the Bulls to backload his contract? This kind of solves the problems at hand. Gordon gets the money he wants and we don’t start forking over too much money until we get rid of Hughes’ big contract. If Gordon is indeed a part of this team in the future I see no reason to not be willing to backload his contract. Also why hasn’t there been more talking about incentives to close the gap between what he wants and what the Bulls are willing to pay?

There's a limit on how much you can backload the contract.

The amount you can backload it depends on how much Gordon’s first year salary is. On a “fully backloaded” contract the most the Bulls can offer is $59/6 years (they can give a 10.5% raise, based on the first year of the salary, each year). Incentives also factor into the luxury tax, but the amount is based on the probability that you will meet those objectives. So the more incentive driven the contract the less guaranteed money that exists for Gordon, since Reinsdorf doesn’t want to go into the luxury tax for a non-championship team. The only incentive that probably would work is “$$ if you win a championship”, since then we could justify the tax, and since our team sucked last year this would hardly factor into our salary cap numbers at all, but I haven’t heard that idea thrown out there yet.

Reporters really annoy me with some of their "duh" questions.

I loved all of BG’s yes/no answers, but then he kept letting them off the hook and adding more. Too bad he has to worry about keeping a good media image, because I would have loved to see him stick to just yes, no and I don’t know on all those dumb questions. Seriously, did you think this would be worked out sooner? are you disappointed?
