Trade for Jason Kidd

My proposal would solve numerous problems.

We should trade Hinrich and Hughes for Jason Kidd.  The salaries match up very closely(not sure about the exact numbers), but Kidd gets off the books soon.  This would allow us to resign gordon, and have one of the best mentors for Rose.  Kidd has 1 maybe 2 decent years left, just enough time to let Rose ease into his starting role.  Meanwhile we get rid of the log jam in the backcourt, and keep gordon (which im still not sold is a good idea, but it could work with a passer like kidd/rose).

Dallas would do it because hinrich is the defender kidd used to be, and hughes is a starting two(or so people in the NBA think,  I would trade him for a sack of dimes...no, pennies), which they dont really have right now.  Eddie jones and Stackhouse are WAY too old.  Hughes gets off the books in 2 years anyway, and at that point they can start their rebuilding around josh howard and hinrich.  We know Cuban likes to spend his money, so I really do see this as benefiting both sides.

Silly Russian. Silly, Silly Russian.

Ok, actually, this post made a lot more sense to me than I thought it would…

Kidd certainly has been dominating the olympics.....

kidd can’t defend squat or hit a 3 anymore… he’s way past his prime to mentor… basically just a contract and supposidly a “leader” (just ask Dallas)

by yetti on Aug 11, 2008 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Youre almost right.

He shot 38% at threes last year, 46% in the playoffs (over 3 attempts a game), got almost 7 rebounds a game, and still averaged 10 assists. You do realize we’re not getting him for his shooting. He’s a ridiculous passer, to get to BG and Deng, who can hit the jumpers. he can penetrate, and rebound. hes still got good steal numbers. No hes not a defensive stopper like he used to be, and no he cant defend williams, paul, harris, the really fast pg’s, but i know he can stop around 80%. He can stop bibby, jameer nelson, calderon, whoever is playing it for the knicks, andre miller, so on and so forth, all the great pgs, are in the west (yes he’ll have trouble with rondo, harris, and maybe a few others in the east, but it wont even be that bad). He got demolished by paul in the playoffs… so did everyone else. He got benched behind paul and williams in the olympics, So would have everyone else. He was never a shooter, and never will be. He’s been hitting the 3s, and thats all we can ask for after 10 assists, 7 rebounds and a steal and a half a game. No, hes not perfect, no, this idea probably wont happen, but I still believe this would benefit both teams.

i like this idea

it frees up minutes in the backcourt, allows the bulls to resign bg, and kidd’s contract expires after next season. i just don’t think the mavs would do it. they traded diop and devin harris for kidd last year, so i don’t think they want to admit failure and take back a point guard who is older and worse than the one they gave up to get kidd in the first place. however, if they agreed to it, i’d do that trade in a heartbeat.

by kite on Aug 9, 2008 2:25 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I dont know if hinrich is worse

I think Hinrich is on par with Devin harris, just completely different skill set really. And older, but hardly old. I think the real necessity is hughes for Dallas. Seriously theyre SG are Stack and Jones (and i guess terry? but hes a ben gordon type.) I just didnt see Kidd work for dallas at all last year. I mean, this hasnt been rumored or anything, i just truly believe it COULD (not would) benefit both teams.

by sillyrussian on Aug 9, 2008 2:41 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes

Devin harris can’t shoot. I truly believe Kirk had an off year. Kirk is a better on ball defender, Harris has better hands, and steals the ball better, so i think their defense is a wash. Harris is a penetrator, and a finisher, not such a great passer (still better than kirk since he just has no passing ability) so basically i view it as shooting vs penetrating. here are the stats

(Devins last year stats were his best so far)
FGM-A FG% 3PM-A 3P% FTM-A FT% OFF DEF TOT STL BLK TO PF AST PTS
321-693 .463 56-167 .335 248-301 .824 0.4 2.3 2.7 1.41 .16 2.52 2.97 5.8 14.8
(kirks career stats cause last year was far off from them)
2019-4881 .414 639-1695 .377 917-1124 .816 0.4 3.1 3.5 1.30 .27 2.35 3.26 6.4 14.4

Points are a wash, fg% is harris (driving layups) 3pt% hinrich, rebounds is a wash, steals are slightly harris, blocks are wash, assists are hinrich, points are a wash. Also, harris stats were the same in NJ about, so you cant say playing with dirk and howard bring down his production.

Harris is a very good defender

Harris is a good passer, better than I thought he was when I watched his New Jersey games. Dallas is a lot of isolation plays, which is death for assists.

However, you’re pretty far off about defense. Hinrich is known as a good defender, but Devin Harris is a great defender. Tony Parker even said he was glad Harris went East because he was the only guy who could guard him. Harris is as quick as anyone and also TRIES on defense; Hinrich tries but isn’t as athletic as Harris.

Harris can shoot; 33% from three isn’t going to lead the league but it’s respectable. He has a good mid-range jumper.

I always liked Hinrich, but Harris is much better.

I'd do this in a second

if for no other reason than Kidd expires at the end of the year. The trouble is getting Cuban to value Kirk to the point that he believes the captain can get them to a championship. Kirk’s a long term commitment to whichever team – if any – takes him.

As I said before, trades like this only become possible after Kirk raises his value. And that requires opening the year with a 3-guard rotation of Kirk, Rose, and Gordon

You say, "Kidd has 1 maybe 2 decent years left,"

This is the major fault in your whole post.

I say he doesn’t.

Seen any of the pre-olympic matches?

Guy’s been HORRIBLE.
So obvious. Mike K benched his sorry, old a*s

by rtblues on Aug 9, 2008 11:58 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

That may be ok

Then the Bulls start Rose immediately and let Kidd be his backup who gets 15-20 per. Rose still benefits from Kidd’s tutelage. This would be a dream scenario for all those who want Rose to start from day one.

JKidd’s deal only goes through 2009 anyway, so he and Gooden become $28M of cap relief at the trade deadline which could net a super-duper star.

One problem: if JKidd joins the team, does Gordon immediately demand $22M/yr to be the highest paid Bull!?

Kidd the great mentor

give me a break, he’s a coach killer and likely wants no part in being a backup or much of a locker room help.

right now Kidd fits

Kidd only has troubles with their own agendas like avery who liked to be in control but we have a completely new coach this year, would Kidd not help make VDN’s job a little easierat the start?

by sin on Aug 9, 2008 4:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i agree

i don’t know that he’d necessarily be a coach killer, but i doubt the last thing he’d want for the last couple years of his career is to be a backup for the number one pick on a real young team that isn’t going to win it all in the next couple years.

by Jaina on Aug 9, 2008 6:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's just one year.

I don’t think anybody would expect him to stay around for more than his contract. Which is up after next year.

by kidronmusic on Aug 9, 2008 11:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

doesn't change the fact

that coming to chicago is probably not what he wants to do. i’d picture him unhappy in his role here causing all sorts of issues.

by Jaina on Aug 10, 2008 10:34 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fair point

I just have this vision of a good veteran PG taking Rose under his wing and teaching him all the secrets. Hell, it only took four days of two-a-days for Deron to absorb all of Stockton’s super powers.

by paxson43 on Aug 10, 2008 12:09 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK, but we need one year of competent play.

I didnt know if he had 1 or 2 years left on the contract (now i know its one). And you cant say ‘because he was binched on the olympic team. Well DUH, i would bench him too behind Paul and Deron. If they were running kirk and duhon at the one, you think hed still be benched? doubt it. For one year he will be serviceable. not great, doubtfully good, but an average pg. Im willing to deal with that for a year for his tutelage and for the ease of the log jam, and for the cap space.

by sillyrussian on Aug 9, 2008 12:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I reaally like this

I tthink Kidd joining us would benefit both of our newcomers
first- rose could develop even faster and maybe be even better than expected by being mentored by a vet pg and who better than jkidd to do that
second- I think this would greatly benefit VDN by taking some pressure off of him and allow someone else to control things on the court. I think having Kidd to help him for his first year or so would be great

by sin on Aug 9, 2008 1:48 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

As I have stated before...

I think the idea of veteran mentoring is greatly over-valued. But I actually like this trade. Mostly for the expiring contract, but I think that Kidd can help this team for a year. And I think he will play his ass of and be on his best behavior… because he is in a contract year and he has already had a bunch of bad press in the last year. So, he needs to do whatever he can to prove he is still an effective point guard, and a good teammate,

by kidronmusic on Aug 9, 2008 5:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

when exactly did he have bad press?

all I’ve heard since Kidd joined Team USA is how he’s the only undefeated member of Team USA in international play and the only one with a gold medal, yadda yadda yadda. The media has been slobbering over this guy in spite of his poor play. Chris Sheridan, recently, and Hollinger, when Dallas made the trade, have been the only guys in the MSM who have been remotely critical of the guy.

by fundamentallysound on Aug 9, 2008 5:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You want bad press?

Well, there’s the fact that he’s had years of off-court troubles with his (now divorced) wife and allegations of physical abuse on both sides. There’s the assertions that he’s been a coach killer, hotheaded and difficult to work with by almost every head coach he’s been with (though I’ll give him a pass for bitching about Skiles).

The media has long had a love affair with Kidd because he racks up tons of assists and makes pretty plays, and most people stupidly assume the Kidd of now is the same of 5-6 years ago.

I was a multiple time all star throughout my little league career. Won 5 championships- 4 in a row- thats more in a row than MJ… (kenwo4life@aol.com)

Here is the start of it:

SHANGHAI, China—Jason Kidd sat and watched the final 20 minutes of Team USA’s friendly competition against Russia from the bench Sunday, his warm-ups never coming off.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski, when asked why he benched Kidd, was in the middle of answering during his postgame interview when Kobe Bryant interrupted with a two-word explanation: “He’s old.”

Krzyzewski said Kidd will be back in the starting lineup Tuesday night when the Americans play their final pre-Olympic exhibition game against Australia, but what will happen beyond that point is fair game for open speculation.

With Chris Paul and Deron Williams looking especially effective against Russia’s zone defense, what we saw in Team USA’s 89-68 victory over the reigning European champions could be an indication of what we’ll see in the next couple of weeks.

I liked the Kobe quote part, “He’s old.”... :-)

The only way I'd take Kidd off their hands

is if Cuban promised to pay whatever it takes to buy the Cubs.

Rec this post

I think this is a really well thought out trade idea that is different from most of them. SO i think that we should rec it so it can stay around longer.

by ifarr on Aug 14, 2008 6:42 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, trading for a washed up malcontent is always a fantastic idea

Especially when the team he’s currently on just gave up a better (he will be this coming season anyways), younger option to acquire him in the first place, I’m sure they’re ready to move on.

excellent deal

kidd a coach killer with baggage? who cares, who’s going to listen to him at this point in his career? VDN fired because Kidd didn’t like him? Derrick Rose inherits Kidd’s bad attitude? BE REAL! Theses things aren’t and can’t happen.

Kidd can only bring the best he has left in his tired body, he can’t manipulate anybody at this point.

Mavs have to rebuild, with Kirk and hughes it positions then to still utilize Dirk while he still has some good years. Only if Kirk still has something in is tank? I really don’t know?

Prudent busines decision, Paxson make the call or pump Kirk (MPG comment) and make the trade. The only question? can gumpy Kirk be pumped to perform or does he want to stay close near Iowa and retire a Bull in 5 years. 46 million for a smart Iowa guy investing wisely is still a great life.

by exult463 on Aug 15, 2008 11:50 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow, as silly as I initially thought this idea...

I end up liking it. Kirk would work out in Dallas, Bulls re-sign BG. Also, Dallas must know that Kidd is not going to work out for them, so I would expect them to shop him around.

Also, the Bulls get relief with hopes of locking in a tall SG (Kobe, Wade) in a year. I could go on…but I try to refrain from getting too spun up in trading and signing possibilities.
