so much for Arroyo as a backup point option
after the (hopefully) inevitable Hinrich trade. I still say we could do worse than signing the uber-efficient D-Leaguer Earl Calloway as the backup point, plus there are other options besides Arroyo. Like trading Noce for Eric Snow’s dead body / expiring contract, or signing someone like Damon Stoudamire or the artist formerly known as White Chocolate to a vet-minimum deal.

yup
unfortunately, Pax can’t make deals until he settles with Gordon. And can’t settle with Gordon unless he makes some deals.

My cynicism is agreeing w/ a recent guess of yours:
The Bulls really, really, really want Gordon back but are trying to use the luxury tax situation against him. I’m sure they know they could shave 1, 2 or 3 million off the salary pretty easily, but don’t want to because they know that it would immediately take away what little “leverage” they already have.
exactly
would they want to get the deal done and just make a near-simultaneous cost-cutting move to facilitate it? Or would they consider that ‘giving in’?

They'd consider it giving in.
::warning!!! lots of speculation:::
To be “fair”, though, if that’s what they feel Gordon’s true value is+, then it’s smart on their part. If they really felt that his salary was that of one starting at the 7.xxxx that the lux tax allows them, they’d be foolish to give away any leverage.
Of course, it’d be entirely too coincidental, though, that they feel his “true value” is exactly what’s left over from the Deng negotiations. If they are offering that amount, and exactly that amount, it’s an indication they probably think he’s “worth” more, but they just don’t want to pay him.
Or… this could just be a convenient way for the indecisive Bulls F.O. to actually come up with an exact figure for an offer. “Well, maybe he’s worth more, but we can’t offer him more. So this is all there is!”
I really get the sense that Gordon will be the one to give in.
I can’t see him taking the QO because he’d almost certainly be buried on the bench for the entirety of the year (which is what the Bulls SHOULD do if he does take the QO, because at that point he won’t be interested in staying with us because he’s underappreciated and he won’t be a part of our future and winning this year shouldn’t be a huge concern with it being Rose’s rookie campaign and a time for development over “winning now”). He won’t go to Europe, that’s simply bluster from his agent and him trying to take advantage of Josh Childress scaring the bejesus out of NBA teams. So his options are to try and force a sign-and-trade…not likely because everyone around the league seems to think he’s nuts with these demands and he’d be a BYC player making it even more complicated. Ultimately, I think BG will buckle and take what’s being offered, which is unfortunate for him and will probably lead him to resent the organization just a little bit. But to be fair, 6 years $ 58 million is nothing to sneeze at and he had the opportunity to take more last year and turned it down and then turned in an off season. Them’s the breaks, Ben.

I agree w/ the main point...
...I do disagree that they “should” bench if he gets the QO. They should put out the best team possible: to win, to develop Rose and to see how Del Negro’s offense/defense works best. If he turns into a 25 ppg scorer, 58% TS%, 20 PER, etc. player, and the offense vaults into a Top -10/15 offense, then the Bulls can decide if they want to try to outbid anyone to keep him. Especially since they’re not going to pay the guy 6.5 mil/yr w/ his talent and work ethic, blah blah blah to sit and not play.
I do think he’ll settle for a short-term deal. I just wish they’d offer more on the short-term. They could offer 3/33 and only have to take off $2.5 mill this year.
Incentives
Add incentives to that 58 mil over 6 years deal, and then Gordon saves face with a possibly (if team goals are met) fat deal of closer to 65mil.
The Game chose him !
