the larry hughes question...
looks like leisure suit Larry has actually been working hard this off season to improve his game with Tim Grover at hoops the gym in chi-town this summer. now, i know a couple of other bulls have put in some time with Tim over this summer, IE. Deng and Thomas, but it is refreshing to read that Hughes, a guy who says that he just likes to have fun is putting in extra effort.
here is the article on hoops they gym.
anyway, i think most of the reason that bulls management is not crapping in their collective pants over losing BG has to do with the expectation that Hughes can turn his game around and become the slashing offensive presence that he once was with his former defensive prowess to boot. having watched Hughes in dc during his prime i know what he is capable of, and its definitely next level. anyway, i am going to go out on a limb and say that Larry will have a re-breakthrough season this year and really change the dynamic of the bulls offense for the positive. all you Larry haters, keep hating, but watch out...

Just think though,
when Larry misses his 30-40 games this year it will create all sorts of playing time for Thabo.

we’ll miss BG more than you think

But who will hit the open 3's created by all that slashing?
Rose, Hughes and Thabo, and I guess Deng, will be slashing. We’ll need someone to hit the open 3’s. Theoretically, Hinrich, Noc and (if he gets playing time) Nichols can hit those 3’s, (Thabo, Hughes, and Rose less so) but none at the rate that Gordon could. Plus, doesn’t Hughes duplicate all of the slashing, if Rose, Thabo and Deng are supposed to be doing that?
Simmons’ Ewing Theory leads me to believe that the world won’t end if the Bulls lose their leading scorer in Ben. But that doesn’t mean that the Bulls should just let him walk.
"It’d be ridiculous to hate someone for simply what they say in a sports blog. But I greatly dislike every syllable of your angst-filled, smarmy, nondescript, half-assed, elitist-garbage responses." –Rogerspark Kris
yes, slashing leads to open jumpers...
…and i for one, due to their higher probability of going in, am perfectly content with the mid-range variety.
That's terrible reasoning.
The Bulls don’t have a single player that shoots even 45% from mid-range. Shooting just 33% from 3P range is the equivalent of shooting 50% from 2P range.
Where are you getting that 45% from mid-range from?
Are you just referencing overall FG? 45 from mid-range is actually pretty damn good. Curious, the only thing I’ve come across is this:
Hinrich and Deng aren’t that far below Ben Gordon. This is a bit outdated, though.

45% is really good. Top 30 in the NBA good.
I was using a very generous number so that it was clear just how dumb jocrucal’s statement was. Gordon led the team by making 43.7% last season. And for the record Thabo shot 37.4% and Hughes shot 35.6% from mid-range last year.
OK....
Let’s see what we can get for Hughes? I see you are promoting Hughes love here, but i just wanted to point out who we could get for Hughes if he is gonna be this good! I think with Hughes being our leading scorer,we would have more problems than BG,Hughes never saw a shot he didn’t like, and if he has a FG% over 42%,I would run down Michigan ave. with my wee wee swinging! Here’s the players that could be had for his money if Paxdorf really tries to make a one on one trade for him!
Mike Bibby $14,983,603
Vince Carter $14,724,125
Zach Randolph $14,666,667

in that case
ill take a helping of peja please. plus we save 2 million to waste on bg. let rose thabo and deng slash. so it looks something like this
pg-rose/hinrich
sg-gordon/thabo
sf-deng/peja/noch
pf-gooden/thomas
C-noah/gray
we could then also go big with a lineup of
Rose
Thabo
Peja
Tyrus
Noah
we also have a nice blance
shooters: Gordon, Kirk, Peja, Noch
Slashers-rose, thabo, deng, thomas
Post players-gooden, gray, noah
Designated chucker-noch
hmm i really like this idea, they could have noch too if they want and we can pickup another smaller contract….it would still be good….okay when i get the chance im doing a trade machine.us
On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, Bullshooter, and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light....
last year was a throw-away...
im not going to judge any of our players until i have seen them preform in our new system, under our new coach. that being said, way to hate, dakid, great job!
last year a throw away?
What about the other three seasons he played in Cleveland? Were those “throw aways” too. Hughes is a joke. You know who else has been working really hard this off season? Marbury, another joke.
"I knew I'd always remember it as the night me and Michael combined for 70 points" - Stacey King after Jordan scored 69
Or
Let’s just throw away what he did in Washington? Come one wait until we see what his role is and what the coaching staff does with him before we start jumping out of windows.
He did that on a contract year
What about the years before he was in Washington? The guy is crap on sneakers, he knows it and so does everyone else. And no one is jumping from windows because of Hughes, trust me, he’s not that important. He can jump

i´m just saying that when larry actually cares enough to try he can be a dynamic force on the court...
so if he actually is motivated to play his harderst this year he will be a force to be reckoned with.
check the stat. line- larry has had more than one good year…i´m just saying.
I wasn't hating....
I really got your point…shit,if we do nothing,Larry Hughes is our starting SG,I am in agreement,I just want to get that cat off your favorite team if we can..that’s all…no hate! You are my guy Jo! I just want the same goal as you do..I want our team to get better, just like you,if Larry Hughes is the answer…so be it…i hope not,but we will both be hootin’ and hollaring if Larry drops 40 on Milwaukee and we will passing brews over the domino table in rejoice…so i am on your team,I just don’t wanna have this clown on your team if it costs BG minutes or if anybody sees the value in him…If he comes back and is a great ballplayer and lighting it up and we start off strong and we both are happy with the direction of the team, I will be happier than you….that’s some great research, and if i saw that article myself I would have just kept scrolling and left that article unread, but thanks to you I got some more B-Ball knowledge….Larry Hughes is not somebody i dislike,I actually had him on my fantasy team that took first even before he came to the Bulls,so I can’t say I don’t like Hughes,I just value having a good team and not a team that is handicapped by his salary because you got to play him…if he’s good, perfect,if he is not here…better…No hate…Only Love!

Hughes has always been crap
Over his career he’s always been an inefficient scorer. There hasn’t been a season, where he’s posted more than 1 point per possession used.
Larry needs to secure his final contract
He won’t be quitting anytime soon. He still wants to make money in the NBA.
he had his big contract
no matter what he does he’s not getting another huge payday.

Don't read too much into this blurb, either
Larry’s biggest problem is that he can’t shoot at all and playing pick-up ball, regardless of intensity, is probably not the best way to improve on something like shooting mechanics.
sI’d be more encouraged if the article actually said that he was working with the staff at Attack on his jump shot.
Here's My Line-up....
Let’s say we lose Gordon to Olympiakos……..
PG-Hinrich
SG-Benny the Bull
SF-Deng
PF-Gooden
C-Noah
Rose 30+mins./game
rest of bench doing what they do……
IR-Hughes-(Broke shooting wrist)

The problem with Hughes isn't skill
There are plenty of productive NBA SGs with much less skill than Hughes. The problem is that he plays like he’s a superstar. He goes for the big steal instead of playing tough man defense. He takes shots out of the offense’s rhythm. And he tries scoring in isolation when no shot is there.
I agree....
But Bg is my reason to sit Hughes…as BG said it…too many guards!

Bring back MJ.
Hughes is the classic example of a sports guy that over the years has shown just enough talent to let you know he has the potential to be great; but in reality he never is able to find any sort of consistency. His time in Washington was amazing; but now those days will be an afterthought in his career ; if he doesnt have a “come back” year with the bulls. If this year goes bad for him he will most likely spend the rest of his career bouncing around from team to team. Even if he did come out and play 70+ games and put up solid numbers its hard to see him continue that for a few years. Its tough for me to picture Hughes in a bulls uni for much longer than this season; no matter what he does.
The opposite...
Joe smith is a first pick BUST, who probably has half the talent of hughes, but also seems condemned to bounce around from team to team. The sad fact is though that Joe Smith is Awesome. He is one of the few players in the nba that knows his game (luol deng i think is another player who knows his game) he doesnt do things he cant do, and the things he can (15 jumpshots) he does real well. If i was doing a fantasy team or something, i would pick joe smith, his bad knees, and his bicycle over a healthy Larry Hughes with his Ginormous Ego anyday.

Joe Smith...
Although very competent and very good in playing within his game would not be considered a bust if he was drafted lower in the draft because he is very servicable for the role he plays, but since No.1 overall picks are not meant to be role players,Joe Smith gets a bad rap….If Tyrus Thomas continues to soar over the basket with his athleticism and if he can find that 15 foot jumper,Tyrus will be a star! No camparison from me in Larry Hughes and Joe Smith, but give me Hughes when he was with the Wiz,and I can easily forget about BG..but since we are relagated to the Hughes who is a star in his own mind…I see no need to think that 1 summer will erase the player in Hughes that I seen for the last 3 years….

anything is possible.
Unless a great deal/trade presents itself, let’s wait and see how the season starts. Within 20 games the situation and tempo will be presented. Keep Hughes, entertain offers for Ben Gordon- Match if appropriate. Keep Noc. Keep Hinrich.
nothing new.

including lots of losses with rookie coach, no low post scorers/3pt shooter, no go to scorer & skinny bigs.
..CP3 has effective low post scoring from David West and outside shooting from Pega & ?Gordon? & Posey
..D.Williams has effective low post scoring from both Carlos Boozer & Milsap and Big outside shooting from Okur.
Bulls only match these team in one other area besides a star pg(present & future). We do have their equavlent of AK47 and Ty1 in Ty2/Noah, but this is not enough to put points on the board. I imagine Gooden can be as effective as Milsap, but he’s no consistent Boozer or David West. Noc a decent shooter makes it difficult to have him on the floor without losing in other areas.
