Lu not playing for GB after all?
According to Basketball 24/7, his contract won't be fully insured because of that back injury that kept him out a few games last year, so the NBA won't release him to play.
Assuming this is true, I do feel bad for Lu because it seems really important to him to be able to represent GB. But there's that part of me that is also really glad he isn't out risking injury.

Arg.
I was hoping his GB play would help him become more vocal and take on a a stronger leadership role leading into this next season. Of course I don’t want him to get hurt, but it would have been a great opportunity for him to work on leading a team.
Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

That's bogus
He was so hyped about playing for England.
"I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Gonna kick some ass in the USA. Gonna climb a mountain, gonna sew a flag, gonna fly on an eagle. I’m gonna kick some butt, gonna drive a big truck. I’m gonna rule this world. I’m gonna kick some ass. I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Rock, flag, and eagle!"

Whoa!
Who cares about him playing for Great Britain. The story here is that Deng’s contract isn’t insured against a back injury.
That’s basically the same deal as on Q Richardson (his back) and umm… Eddy Curry (his heart).

Please correct me if I'm wrong
The article states it’s only an injury Deng’s back that’s not covered by insurance. Wasn’t Curry completely un-insurable?
We have every right to dream heroic dreams. Those who say that we're in a time when there are no heroes, they just don't know where to look.

IIRC
Curry’s was simply uninsured against his heart but I can’t find an article after all this time that spells it out.
In general, the way the league insurance policy works is to insure against known issues. For example, there’s no reason Curry or Q or Lou would be any more succeptable to tearing up their knees than the average player, so they don’t lose insurance against that. Players only get uninsured when there’s a known or suspected problem that increases the risk against a particular injury.
YFBB,
I wouldn’t make that assumption. From the article, it says:
Deng, 23, signed a lucrative new deal with the Chicago Bulls two weeks ago after passing a battery of medical tests.
But the NBA’s New York insurance company, which must cover all NBA players before they can play for their national teams, has refused to completely insure that contract because of an old back injury.
Deng missed three games in November with a minor back problem and the insurance broker’s decision is based on an MRI scan taken then. Although a policy has been issued it does not cover that part of the player’s body.
Under an arrangement with world-governing body FIBA, the NBA is obliged to release any player who wishes to play for his national team but only if insurance requirements are totally met.
That sounds to me like it’s the league insurer’s policy, although it doesn’t specify for sure.
For that matter, why on earth would they refused to insure his contract to play in a couple games this summer but consent to insure it for the next six years?

I assume
it’s only uninsured for non-NBA competition.

What is the deal?
What exactly is the deal with Deng’s back?
I know he’s hurt it and it has given him problems, I just don’t know the exact type of injury it is.
I think your interpretation is the correct one. It’d be a huge story if his contract wasn’t insurable for the NBA because of his back. McGrady would never get insurance if that was the case.

I actually thought
that the back injury he had this year was a result of the achillies injury he had earlier in the season.

Refer to Sports2's FanPost about this
The language in the article makes it seem like it’s not just for international competition, but for all basketball.
God forbid every sports journalist in Chicago didn’t take some time to stop dissecting some stupid shit antic by Alfonso Soriano to actually do some real investigating. Morty you should count your blessings you live in a 1 sport town.

"Whaaaa...
the Cubs get all the media attention, whaaaaaa!"
Give me a break. Even if both baseball teams were in last place, the Bears had no QB controversy, and the Olympics weren’t all the rage, Chicago’s sports journalists still wouldn’t cover this story or provide any insight/details.

Jay Mariotti is in Bejing, hiking the Great Wall of China, spouting gems of intelligence via phone
He is working hard, and I demand the same from the rest of our pitiful sports journalism cache in Chicago.
