Bulls predicted to finish 13th on account of new coach, backcourt logjam and lack of low post scoring presence.

This seems overly dire to me and I wanted to get everyone else's thoughts.

Not to be a negative Nancy,

but I agree completely with Burns. We have a rookie point guard, rookie coach, and it looks like we’re going to be losing our leading scorer. We have no scoring down low. We have Larry Hughes.

I could see us finishing behind the Knicks; at least they’ll get a feel good boost with Dantoni. With the contract crap, the coaching search bungle, and even a bit of bad press from Rose’s debut…there’s a lot of negativity to overcome here.

I could see us finishing behind the Knicks, too.

Oh good lord

did I mention the knicks? I hope so. Because I really had a point in there about the Knicks.

Mention the Knicks?

Don’t worry you did.
And the Knicks will be lots better and will make the playoffs now that they have Larry Brown remaking their roster.
Oops.
The Knicks will be lots better and will make the playoffs now that they have Mike D’Antoni remaking their roster.
The big key is the remaking their roster part and now that they have a professional as a General Manager the long term future is more promising.
Now if they can only find someone to take a STAR IN HIS OWN MIND off their hands . . .
And maybe one of the two low post players whose first defensive thought will be
well their first defensive thought!

I don’t know. I guess in spite of all the problems the Bulls have I still would rather be rooting for them than the Knicks this season.

I think it's a toss up

I mean, who really knows….the Bulls have a lot of talent, they are just mostly young. We have a billion trade assets, but right now aren’t doing anything because the Gordon situation isn’t yet settled. We have a gluttony of guards, but they are all pretty decent guards (even Hughes, who folks hate, has a lot of talent, just doesn’t play team ball and most importantly makes too much money).

Sure we don’t have a natural threat down low, but who knows what strength training would do for Tyrus and mechanics work on Noah could bring….they are young players.

The distraction of Deng AND Gordon’s contracst will be over with (Deng’s for sure, Gordon might have to put up or sit).

The coaching carosel won’t happen next year, and while Vinny’s a rookie coach at all levels, he has some of the best assistants possible at his side. Vinny was a decent player for a guy with limited talents, and it seems often those kinds of guys make for the best coaches (Phil Jackson, etc).....we’ll just have to see.

I think the team will be more focused than last year. Definately improved in talent getting rid of the real cap killer (Big Ben) and getting 1 more than serviceable not a star Gooden and 1 great athlete not a team player (Hughes).

THe guard logjam should it remain will be an issue, but I expect HInrich will be gone by the start or trade deadline.

The rest of the roster is pretty fine, young talented, weak offensively down low, but we have more than enough potential upside weapons.

Burns himself said we’re a hard team to quantify…..who knows what we have. The whole East is pretty much a question mark. I’m not high on the Pacers, I do think the Raptors will drastically improve, and I think the Magic will take a mild step back losing their PG depth and focusing too much on the seriously overpaid Nelson. Kirk whether a Bull or not will at least get back to his 1-4 yr production and be a solid defender again, Noc will be a sparkplug for our team….we’ll be better than we seem on paper because of the athleticism all over this team.

We’re young though, so there are many many questions. Still I predict we’ll at least slide into the playoffs with an 8th seed worst, and a 5th seed best.

I think the Bulls are going to get a lot of backlash after last year

So many experts picked them to be contenders, which obviously turned out to be a pretty bad prediction – I think this year they’ll be overly pessimistic about the team. Sure, it’s a possibility they’re horrible if a VDN is on the awful end of rookie coaches and Rose develops incredibly slowly and the guard glut is never resolved, and it seems like Burns’ ranking made those assumptions. On the other hand, all of that could turn out to be a non-issue and the team really bounces back – but who’s really going to take that track outside of hopeful Chicago fans after last year.

Personally, without knowing the final roster or having any idea of what injuries will do to teams this year, I can see anything from 6th to 11th. I think they’re better than the Bobcats, Bucks, Nets, and Knicks for sure.

Plus, every bum with a computer can come up with conference rankings

For instance, picking the Cavs to be better than the Pistons? Jim Boylan could coach Detroit and they’d still win 50 games. Cleveland is awful, and the only reason they win more than 40 games is because LeBron routinely has MVP-caliber seasons.

The Bulls aren’t going to be great, but they can still be a good team, which in the East is usually enough for a playoff berth. Athletes love the whole “us against the world” concept anyways, perhaps these negative reviews will amp them up a little.

On target

I am not sure they can beat the Knicks or the Nets. I have said that the Bulls will be worse than the Bucks, so I agree.

by Fastbreak on Aug 13, 2008 6:39 PM CDT reply actions

Have you seen

the recent trades the Bucks have made? They don’t look very threatening at all at this point. Though there will be midget basketball, if you are into that sorta thing.

still

I think they’ve got enough talent that Skiles could get them to overachieve for a couple years before he loses them.

Burns: suck one. Whoever you are.

Bobcats add 5’9” D.J. Augustin to back up Felton, Bulls add the #1 pick and presumably a more healthy Deng and Gordon, and the Bobcats leap us? I don’t think so.

Pacers at 8: joke. Hawks minus Childress ahead of the Bulls: joke. Bucks ahead of the Bulls after today’s debacle: joke. We’ll be in the hunt longer than Burns has a column.

by YaoPau on Aug 13, 2008 8:20 PM CDT reply actions

I agree - I'd figure Indiana

is the worst in our division. But the Bobcats have Wallace, Richardson, Okefore, and a pretty talented player in Felton. They’ve also got more continuity than we do. I figure the Bulls and Bobcats to be about even.

All this presupposes no player movement. Rosters as is, of course.

lol

The media loves to have a few soundbites about the Bulls. No need for doing serious research. They’ll be saying this all season if it fits or not. Better get used to it. (arg, I hated the “baby bulls” of a few years ago…here we go again)

well

as of now, the bulls are sot of in a state of disarray. Espescially if the backcourt logjam doesnt get cleared up and they don’t sign gordon. Im worried the bulls are starting to look like a bad joke….sort of like the knicks or timberwolves. It certainly looks that way if they go in with the current roster-Gordon. An organization that looks like a joke isnt very likely to attract any superstar free agent in 2010, so cant count on that either.

and wat a drop for the pistons. wow.

Even without a starting PG and C, the Heat look formidable on the offensive end

Assuming Wade stays healthy, they should expect to make the playoffs

Well this sets expectations..

Remember a year ago this time, Bulls were projected to win the East, and went on to have a bum season not even making the playoffs.

Now, this writer says dead last. Therefore anything better is a successful season? I guess?

The team as constructed today, minus Gordon or QO Ben, doesn’t excite me as a fan. Scoring will be a problem, and winning games in the NBA isn’t easy. Paxson needs to make a significant trade, and the coaching situation will be a challenge for better or worst? Time will tell.
I predict firing Paxson will happen sometime within the next 10 months as a means to tell fans we made some mistakes and now we want to make positive changes in another direction.

by exult463 on Aug 14, 2008 11:19 AM CDT reply actions

With Gordon

I think this is a better team than last year if we retain Gordon. On the other hand, you have to figure other teams have improved too.

Every team I can see, except maybe the Nets and the Hawks, have some legitimate reason to expect themselves to be better than they were last year.

by Sports2 on Aug 14, 2008 12:13 PM CDT reply actions

I hate Skiles but....

Ridnour was the starting PG when Ray Allen had 3 of his best 4 seasons, and as a starter,R.Lewis had all 3 of his best years while Ridnour was at the lead…so,I see Skiles as a proven coach simply out-coaching VDN in head to head competition, and then he does have comparable players on the wing as Ridnour would be used to in Redd and Jefferson…so,I hate to ever admit that Mil. would be better than the Bulls, but they already got rid of a problem by seperating Redd and Mo…so,addittion by subtraction has already started in Milwaukee, and we are still trying to figure out what to do with BG and all the scrub ass big men are going to teams with established low post games…e.g. Elson(Mil.),Powell(Lakers),Ratliff(Philly)…so,because the Bulls won’t do anything until BG is settled,we pretty much know our roster unless we take a chance on Elton Brown as a Big after we settle BG if a smarter team doesn’t make that move first!

by dakidfromchitown on Aug 14, 2008 8:09 PM CDT reply actions

Skiles certainly out coached the hell out of teams

When he was playing Duhon/Hinrich backcourts for the majority of games. Just because he got the Bulls to work hard (which wasn’t that hard since they were all no more than 1 year removed from the NCAA, which are run by Skiles clones with better suits), doesn’t mean he’ll get the veteran heavy Bucks to do so.

"I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Gonna kick some ass in the USA. Gonna climb a mountain, gonna sew a flag, gonna fly on an eagle. I’m gonna kick some butt, gonna drive a big truck. by Ozzie Montana on Aug 14, 2008 10:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree...but....

Skiles has to have Hammond by the balls to make him remove 30 pts. a game and 7 rebs. and at least 7 assts. in order to be a demanding ass coach and make the GM move that many pts. for a docile PG and the Junk yard dog!

by dakidfromchitown on Aug 14, 2008 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagreed

even the dumbest of lineups can be masked if everyone’s playing hard, especially on D. But I agree it’s possible that the Bulls were uniquely constructed to listen.

But he made a similar defensive turnaround coaching in Phoenix.
