Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

[From the FanShots. Nice work by Doug Thonus in getting some info from Pax with little time to do so. For even more Pax, the Swirsk has an interview with him at Bulls.com. -ed.]

Draft Express has a short little chat with Paxson.

Thanks for the link. Highlights for me:
I think we’d love to be able to package players to get a really talented guy we can count on every night and we’ll look at that, but when there’s uncertainty like we have you have to be careful.
So being young isn’t always the ideal thing, but that’s where we are right now. Hopefully we can take some of these guys and acquire a guy we really like, but that’s the situation we’re in right now.

and the best one of all (re: 2010)...

In an ideal world, you would like to be a really good team and clear cap space at the same time. I do feel if we choose to go that direction that we’d have the opportunity to do it. At that time Larry Hughes deal comes off for us, and we have some pieces we could move into expiring deals if we chose to.

Even Pax is admitting Hughes and his fantastic shot selection is nothing but an awful contract…I can’t help but lol at that.

what? you’re lol and I’m trying to find a reason to smile?

What does that say about the Wallace signing, when he personally travelled to Piston Town to close the deal?

I just can't believe Pax would come out and basically admit that. It's sad, yet hilarious at the same time.

Things don't always work out in the end like you thought they would

in the beginning.

I’m glad Paxson has a realistic view of the team. I find myself trusting him more lately than I have in a long time.

What’s sad is that the guys from DX got more outof Paxson than our local press has been able to get out of him since day 1.

Unfortunately, that sounds like an admission that

Hughes will be on the team until 2010.

I was hoping the Bulls would gte rid of him sooner than that.

I disagree.

I don’t think we can read that far into it. Pax has no idea who’s going to be on the team in October, let alone 2009, until he sorts out the contracts of Lu and Ben.

We need to stop hoping for 2010

A LOT can change between now and then. If we are hoping to land someone good in 2-3 years, that’s sad. Stop trying to win in the future and actually try winning now. We put all of our eggs in the KG basket in the late 90s. We then hoped the twin towers of Curry and Chandler would bring us a title down the road. We then built the core of Kirk, Ben, and Luol so that we could win down the road (i.e. last year and this year..).

Larry Hughes is way overpaid, but he isn’t that bad of a player. He wasn’t that good on the Cavs because all they had was him and Lebron. However, when he was on a team with a few options (the Wizards) he was great. He made the Bulls look bad in the playoffs when we faced them.

I think we should do some sign and trades with BG and/or Deng. For who? Not sure. However, there are trade opportunities everywhere. Most of the players in the league are tradable, and it is only a matter of finding the right team, with the right player(s), at the right time. I don’t mean to make it sound easy. I just mean to make it sound possible.

Hilarious quote from Pax

about Nichols…”he plays a little bit erect, and that limits some of the things he can do”

"The Zen philosopher Basho once wrote: 'A flute with no holes is not a flute, And a doughnut with no hole is a Danish.' He was a funny guy."

What?

More insignificant filler comments by Paxson. Whom could be considered to be the most under insightful interviewing executive in the History of Sports.

I think this is because Jerry Reindorf hasn’t yet told him what to say or do. While other GM’s negotiate, sign free agents and make deals. So Paxs fills the time with insignificant comments about a player, who’ll probably fill a cheap roster spot and won’t get any meaningful playing time that figures into anything significant.

Watch Nichols or some other scrub get a cheap 1 year contract from the Bulls organization that didn’t anticipate getting the 1st pick in the draft and now must folk over an unexpected 5+ million to Derrick Rose.

…"he plays a little bit erect, and that limits some of the things he can do"

Interviewer should have said: Paxson what do or did you expect from Nichols in the grand scheme of things?
