Star-divide

My first EVER fanpost! Yay! :D

The purpose is selfexplanatory... ;)

Go Bulls! :D

Ah... Apparently these things need to be 75 words long... And my first 13 words didn't quite cut it... ;) So I guess I need to ramble meaninglessly for a little bit just to be able to post it...

I imagine it's usually a good rule in general seeing you probably should have something to say when creating a fanpost. But since this is a mere game-thread I don't really see how this is necessary. But I learnt a long time ago never to argue with computers... Like women... Just say "yes" and do what they say...

I'm going to check to see if that is enough of a ramble...

My Obsolete Game Intro

Relax: it’s summer league.

The lane cluttering, disorganized mottle of bodies you see in the lane does not lend itself well to a penetrating point guard. Neither do the bricks our shooters have fired up after Rose got them open.

Rose hasn’t shot well; on other plays he’s flashed brilliant speed, quickness and strength. Beasley looked brilliant; then didn’t. I don’t feel any differently about “the choice” now than I did after the draft.

Still, there are things you’d like to see improve. For instance the two-foot pass Rose seems to favor after he jogs the ball up court. That might be fine in college, where you have a longer shot clock, and time to circle around for awhile, but at some point we’re going to want to see Rose realize that he’s the guy that has to make things happen. And happen post-haste. On the other hand, this is exactly the way things happened at Memphis. Rose was deferential at first. Later, not so much.

Of all the players, however, Noah has been the least encouraging. He remains – at least from the little we’ve seen – spastic, skinny, and unskilled. Let’s hope for more.

The magic don’t have much outside of courtney Lee, who’s looked smooth and comfortable averaging 20 ppg on 57% from 3. Other notables include former Illini James Augustin and Martin Gortat, the game’s requisite Slavic behemoth.

Starting time is 3PM EST. Goofy announcers/Mario Chalmers-votaries will be in attendance.

Noah

I like Noah and all, but I can now see why he cant shoot.. its hard for him to concentrate with all the weed and alky in his system… But hey he plays hard… so its all good… maybe if he would at least get some muscles so he can push people around that be nice

Not Bulls-related but

does anyone w/ any knowledge of the Magic know if James Augustine has a chance of making the team this year? Gotta support the fellow Illini – especially anyone from the 2005 team.

Tony Battie coming back

older, with another season of injuries.

Marcin Gortat made the team last year. Chances strong for Augustine.

Doubt he plays much. SVG has a tight rotation.

by NBA Observer on Jul 9, 2008 2:37 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he's hanging on in the nba

at least he’s not playing in turkey like dee brown and roger powell. at one point the entire ‘05 starting five was in the nba but 3/5 with one future all-star is still pretty good.

i think he’s a strong practice player and the magic like him, so he should be fine. i don’t know how much he’s improved from being a big who can rebound and run the floor, but if he keeps knocking down midrange jumpers (i saw him hit one yesterday) and develops more than a lefty hook in the post, he can challenge for some PT.

It doesn’t help that the Magic have no real PG. He would be much better (like he was with Deron) if they had an above average point guard.

by Orange Juice on Jul 9, 2008 2:56 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's funny becuase the Magic also shoot an insane number of 3s as well

Though I doubt the Reverend Roger Powell is comparable to Dwight Howard.

Dee's

(nuts) haha I couldn’t help it. No but Dee Brown is back and playing with someone in the Las Vegas Summer League team. I guess the Turkish team he played for really screwed him over and didn’t pay him because they lost or something – I read a little bit about it on his website. Dee’s good enough to be a backup PG in the league – if Duhon can do it, Dee certainly can.

Duhon is mediocre. Dee Brown was just bad. Also, didn’t he have a serious back injury after getting drafted, plus another injury that forced him to stay at school?

No reason given

Knee is the most likely reason.

However, typically the guys that are already on the squad don’t play all of the games.

Knee + already on the squad + summer league is to give other guys a look = DNP

Noah/TT/Gooden/Gray

for some reason every time I see this depth chart for our bigs, I keep having thoughts of noccioni playing a lot of minutes at the 4 which scares the sheet out of me. What can we do to fix this?

by NamingRightsOnSale on Jul 9, 2008 4:11 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Noc shouldn't scare too much

Everyone has gotten way down on Noc after one season. The years before that, he was beloved (I still remember getting goosebumps when everyone was cheering No-ci-oni! clap clap clapclapclap during the playoffs). Sure, he was a chucker last year, but who else was attacking offensively last year?

Our two most consistent guys last year was surprisingly Nocioni and Joe Smith (till they traded him away). Nocioni’s FG% was not that good last year, and he didn’t even look to pass at times, but he was the one guy on the floor that looked like he actually wanted to score. He didn’t seem to take plays off like everyone else. He’d get postered on dunks, but that was because he was trying to actually block a dunk (which he did have a few good ones last year). He’d flop a lot, but c’mon, they would work for him. He also wouldn’t pass on an open 3 point opportunity. Even if he wasn’t planning on shooting one, he’d at least know that you have to shoot them when you’re open (unlike most of our guards).

Yes, we paid too much for Nocioni, but at least he’s putting in effort. Most of our guys disappear way too often (Gordon shows up more than most, but it only seems to happen when he comes off the bench…). If you are going to cut anyone slack from last year, it should be Nocioni. He was the heart of our team before last year, and he was one of the few that showed any last year…

Gooden was looking like a good pick up at the end of the year, as well. If he continues to play the way he did for us, he will be our PF for the next few years.

by Syxx on Jul 9, 2008 10:07 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Gooden is underrated!

Gooden played his tail off for us so far and looked like the only one beside Noah who was breathing for the Bulls most of the time. Gooden always angered me when we’d(Bulls) play him in Orlando even. I always used to think he was too silly looking to be finding his way to the ball that often, and he’s improved his offensive game over the years! He’s not a legit bigman when matched up vs larger skilled physical type big men but I think he’s a very solid starting PF. If he stays healthy and doesnt trip over his beard he’ll prove his worth this year….

by JayDangles on Jul 9, 2008 10:54 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

FOR WHO?

I agree completely, but for who? I am curious what we can get if we traded away Larry, Noc, BG, Gooden and Kirk? if we trade all 5 of those guys in return we would need a starting shooting guard, a back up point, a legit big, and maybe one more wing player. Thats a lot of needs to fill… and if we keep them, Gooden is a fake legit big, Kirk and BG are no shooting guards or back up PGs, Larry is useless, Noc is overpaid for what we need from him, and Thabo might rot on the end of the bench.

by BAB-Bass on Jul 9, 2008 4:51 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Its gonna be a long year ...

Rose looks ok but he’s got no one to pass it to that can really score. Just a bunch of streaky role players and worse. Now we just wait til next year’s lottery pick and maybe we can get a scorer. Hope Derrick Rose has got alot of good years in him cuz it’ll be that long before we fiil in the void Beasley might have filled. Show me a pointguard dominated team that wins a championship w/o a big man or at least an oversized sg to fall back on….even if Rose comes anywhere near CP3 (which i’m still skeptical) i think were gonna regret not getting a scorer just like we regret BG and TT now.

by JayDangles on Jul 9, 2008 6:14 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dude, it's summer league

Nobody really has anyone to pass to. The spacing is terrible. Players collide OFF the ball.

This is just how it goes.

The only thing we really should be looking for from Rose is getting whereever he wants with the ball and seeing how many defenders have to crash him once he gets past his man. That and making free throws.

by NBA Observer on Jul 9, 2008 6:44 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

All that from a few summer league games?

Perhaps we should lay off the doom and gloom until we actually see Rose in an NBA game with who he will actually be playing with. And even then keep in mind that by picking Rose we chose the slow, three year route. Which has been stated over and over again by the way. Beasley would be ready from day one, Rose would take awhile. Besides, 2010 is coming where we can get a guy to go along with Rose. Half the time I think all you doom and gloomers just are not paying attention to what is common knowledge. If it doesn’t fit with your one year plan of winning right now it is out the window. The Bulls are not going the fast route. You’ve got a lot of disappointment waiting for you if you spend the next three years wondering what life with Beasley would be like.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

New users

They just need some exposure to other arguments.

by NBA Observer on Jul 9, 2008 9:49 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There is a chance that there will be...

3 years of disappointment. Drafting with the hopes of landing someone in 2010 is a terrible move. Remember the 90s? Reinsdorf/Kraus did all they could to get into position for KG, and what happened? Nothing. Then we had crap guys from 1998 – 2002. Holding onto bad guys and drafting on potential with the hope that the future will be better is silly.

The top overall pick should not be based on potential and future. It should be someone taht will make a difference right away and that should hopefully improve as years go by. Someone who will consistently bring something great night in and night out. The only Overall #1 that was based mostly on potential and actually paid off in the last few years was Dwight Howard. Howard was very raw and did not have the size (weight/muscle) he has now. He didn’t do much his first year aside from dunk. Now he still dunks, but is more of a force down low.

I acknowledge that there’s nothing the Bulls can do now that they have decided on Rose, and I hope each day that he doesn’t flame out on us. We made the #1 pick predicated on roster movement. However, roster movement isn’t really our strong suit. Had it been, we would have had Pau (and some would say Kobe, but I don’t think he wanted out), Al Harrington, KG, or any other player that the Bulls had in their sights.

I hope Rose becomes one of the elite players in the league, and proves me wrong. In my eyes it is an odd draft choice. Had Rose not been a Chicago kid, I don’t think there would have been much of an interest in drafting him. He doesn’t fill a need (people say we needed a true point guard, but hinrich has been good enough for years) and actually now creates another need – to trade away more of our guys. I honestly think Beasley was a better fit for the Bulls, and I would have been a bit happier with a lower pick with the hopes of getting someone like Kevin Love.

The Bulls were in a win-win situation with the first pick, but also a lose-lose. Either way they would end up with the guy that they ultimately wanted (and couldn’t blame anyone else for the decision they made, i.e. other teams picking the player they wanted ahead of them). However, every player they passed on that becomes a star will haunt them.

For those that are saying that the Bulls don’t plan to win now, and that they are building for the future, should realize déja vu is setting in. We heard that when they created the “core” of Hinrich, Duhon, Deng, and Gordon. Well their timetable for those drafts ends around now. Last year was a surprisingly horrific year where nearly every player played below their ability. They couldn’t even make the playoffs in a year where 37 wins made the playoffs. The Bulls’ plan for building for the future gave us that future.

I guess my point to this whole rant is that winning in the present is easier than in the future. There are too many variables that cannot be seen in the future. You have much more of a grasp on what is going on in the present. If the Celtics can go from worst to first in one year, every team should be able to (aside from the Knicks, because they are screwed for the next few years, heh).

by Syxx on Jul 9, 2008 9:54 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i agree.

first round is where you draft what’s left on the table.
second round is where you can draft what the team needs.

he can really handle his balls.

by bulls*hit on Jul 9, 2008 10:31 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You may indeed bring up a legit point...

but its much more important to understand that dwelling on the past does absolutely nothing for us. We picked rose…not Beasley, so accept it. At this point it makes much more sense to discuss our current situation and what kind of moves we can make in the near and further future rather than arguing about what we should have done differently in the past.

I also dont completely agree with you that the win now strategy rather than rebuilding has been so much more succesful for teams. Look at the hawks…even despite several aweful draft picks they have taken alotta time to rebuild and gave the celts arguably the toughest series in the playoffs. The sixers had to give away iverson (entire team), they took a couple years to allow their younger players to develop, and now allowed themselves to make a huge move for their team in signing brand. Look at the cavs…they have focused so hard on the win now (im not saying they shouldnt have), made a bunch of moves, and that worked out well right? Sometimes the situation is right, and a big “win now” move falls into your lap, but ultimately you cant force those and often teams just need to be patient and wait it out.

Also, beasley would have given us just as many roster issues if not more than rose. With rose we are at least able to look a trade options for Kirk and BG who have legit value in the league, but with Beasley what would we do with TT and Gooden? Would he play the 3 and compete with Deng? Were in a great place right now, were starting fresh, so lets just see what happens in the future rather than regretting the past.

3 Years?

lol, Do you really think Pax will be around in 3-4 seasons if we dont see marked improvement? I doubt he has more than 2 if they bulls dont show SOMETHING by then! I also think DRose will be good but the tourney overinflated his value! He hasnt shown he can outshoot Tyrus yet. Beasley looks like a less athletic Pippen at times with a Charles Barkeley(hey its possible..) like attitude when hes pumped. He needs to be mentored by Skiles in Mil so he can learn to be tenacious, lol. Look at E. Curry w/o Skiles, big STALL. My point before was that bright-future DRose or not Paxson has pretty much sabotaged the developing team he created and now he needs to rethink his approach not make desperate moves like he did with BWallace and Skiles. BWallace shouldnt even be allowed back in Chicago, he sabotaged this team the worst of anyone besides Jerry Krause :>)
