Summer League Game Thread: Chicago @ Indiana

Well, yesterday's threads were definitley a shock. Close to 800 comments total on a summer league game.

If you're not aware by now, you must go to the Orlando Magic website to watch these games. They are being streamed live, so if you're at work and can't watch, well you suck at life. Hopefully NBA Observer records the game and is able to send it to whomever is eager to watch it later on.

Obviously, this game doesn't have the big hype of yesterday, unless you are pumped about the Tyrus Thomas/Shawne Williams matchup. I think most people (myself included) are just desperate to see some aggressive play from Rose from the get-go, and some play from Noah and Thomas that doesn't harken comparisons to 5th grade basketball. The rosters for both teams are here

Chicago Bulls basketball: Where 3/5 of the starting lineup is alarmingly medicore ;)

I think we're going to see a much more aggressive

Rose this game. Hopefully he’s realized that we didn’t pick him just to dribble down court and pass to the wing. Beasley stepped on court with an air to take over immediately. Rose didn’t do that. I think he’s going to try today.

Should be fun.

Kevin Durant is going to play in the next game for OKC.

Apparently, he was a late addition. Unless the announcers are lying.

I just tuned in for the Heat game

Everybody’s favorite player from yesterday, Beasley, 1-13 from the field?? Is that right or did I not hear that correctly?

by careyrd on Jul 8, 2008 3:48 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I believe that is correct.

He has gone from a Hall-of-Famer to a scrub in the course of one summer league game.

I have an inkling he is going to get blocked a lot in the League.

It doesn’t mean he won’t be an effective player, of course, but many of his shots are ripe for blocking.

That's what I saw looking at hm before the draft.

There were so many inside shots in college that an NBA caliber help defender would have swatted. And offensive rebounds he wouldn’t get n the NBA. He’s going to score, but it’s going to come facing up outside.

by Scotter on Jul 8, 2008 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It'll hurt his efficiency a little bit

But he’ll still be able to score from the outside with great volume, if slightly less efficiency, and will be able to pick his spots/defenders to take inside.

Of course. I've said all along that he's

likely a version of Carmelo that rebounds. But, I thought it was also pretty clear his game didn’t translate perfectly to the NBA. He’ll be an All-Star because he can score and looks so smooth doing it.

Or maybe yesterday Beasley just

wanted to show Pax that he made a mistaken picking Rose at #1. But I still believe Rose was the right pick.

They all have

friends that travel with them, stay at their house/hotel, warm their car up. They call them entourages. It is quite normal. Rose has his brother. Not really a big deal. Probably better than a bunch of old high school friends.

by BullsFanInSeattle on Jul 8, 2008 6:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know it sounded negative...

but it’s more cynicism than hate.

Here’s a positive note: Rose does look fast.

by Syxx on Jul 8, 2008 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm all for objectivity....

...but coming out of the gate with ‘mid-game form’ comments comes off as snide.

I just want to see Rose’s handles. Does he push the team up and down the floor as expected? The results of those possessions are not necessarily of the greatest import to me right now.

by BullsFanInSeattle on Jul 8, 2008 6:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He pushes nicely, but...

I don’t really like the 1/4 court outlets he’s been doing. He’s more productive with the ball in his hands to bring the ball up.

He’ll get it together sooner than later.

It is just disconcerning

since you don’t like Noah, Tyrus, or Rose and seem to love Beasley. We have what we have. Might as well try to like what we have because it isn’t changing.

by cranscape on Jul 8, 2008 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like those guys

but just don’t like how they are playing.

I don’t get down on Noah, because I know what he brings. He’s a solid player (not too up, nor down)

Tyrus and Rose have a great ceiling, but they need to be more consistent (raise the floor a bit).

by Syxx on Jul 8, 2008 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

after 2 games in summer league

rose must be more consistent. you are right.

by DangerMouse on Jul 8, 2008 6:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Point made more toward Tyrus, but

I did watch the majority of Memphis’s games last season (I have a buddy who plays in the band there and I watch to see him on TV, heh).

Rose was not that consistent in college. He picked up his game later in the tourney.
Clutch factor is a good attribute of his, but clutch only comes into play if its close…

by Syxx on Jul 8, 2008 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tyrus was the same way in college

While I was happy they got him in the draft (I wanted him over Aldridge), Tyrus, too, was a tourney star.

Flashes of brilliance that hasn’t become a consistent part of his game were seen in college too…

by Syxx on Jul 8, 2008 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rose doesn't look nervous like yesterday

his d is more intense and he’s being pretty aggressive pushing the ball. just seems like he has a problem getting through screens. he’s created like 4+ fastbreaks and we just scored like 9 points in less than two minutes because of them.

by AFireInside661 on Jul 8, 2008 6:25 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Defense

looks a lot tighter and they are actually moving the ball around with the offense more. I like Rose’s speed right now. Tyrus is attacking the rim. It doesn’t reflect in the score so much, but it looks better than yesterday.

Tyrus is being active, but has a few fouls.
Noah’s work isn’t going to show up in the stat line, but he’s been okay.

Aaron Gray seems more agile.

so are we playing against a high school basketball team?

rose has made some QUICK moves to the hoop…aaron gray just botched a layup off one of his feeds.

rose isn’t overly assertive in looking for his shot….at memphis he started to really look for his shot later in the year….he found his place on the team before he really started to assert himself on the offensive end….it wouldn’t surprise if he does the same with the Bulls….and I don’t think that’s a terrible thing.

His FT shooting was well documented in college

Would you rather shoot 5-10 from the line or 4-4?

More chances is better in my book

Most of Rose’s experience at Memphis was in a structure. Once we get the real team together, there will be more of that. However, he should be taking this opportunity to work on his improvisation skills. I put the onus on VDN to tell Rose that he should be trying some things, getting creative, breaking out of his shell a little bit. Use summer league to get better playing with chaos.

Tyrus' handle

I wish that Thorpe had informed TT that he would be so dangerous if he would actually work on his ballhandling. With the emergence of his 10-15 ft game, it would be nice if we could count on him to take two strong dribbles under control and finish strong at the rim instead of barreling through the lane and throwing up crap. He’s a hybrid 4 at best – if he can’t back down his man, he at least better face up and score consistently at the rim. Haven’t seen that out of him in three years. Not sure what he’s paying IMG for.

But, I can’t wait to see what Lu’s added to his game thanks to his work with the Thorpedo.

by JSlakov on Jul 8, 2008 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

People just want to see isos because they want to see Rose be athletic.

He’s never run a pick-and-roll offense, so he doesn’t have the instincts for it yet. Iso and pick-and-roll are pretty much your two options in the disorganization of summer league. Rose’s “point guard” skills will be on full display once he and the rest of the team start practicing their real offense.

in case you didn't get it

from that post, you could have read my numerous following posts where I explained that I was commenting on what some posters wanted to see, not actually about Rose and Beasley’s abilities. If people wanted to see one on one scoring than they should have wanted the Bulls to draft Beasley. That was my point. And I wasn’t being 100% serious.

by JSlakov on Jul 9, 2008 12:55 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK. Here's what it is for me.

You know, and anybody who’s been reading this for the past month knows I wanted Beasley. I liked all the good stuff about him, and wasn’t turned off by the questionable or bad stuff about him.

But he’s not our guy. Derrick Rose is—and will be for the foreseeable future. I just see no benefit to ripping him or digging at his backers.

I want to like the guys we have, and to that end I’m attempting to focus on every single positive about his game that I can find.

Yes I rip Ben Gordon—but that’s primarily motivated by my feeling that he no longer wants to be here. Every single little piece of ‘news’ we’ve had about Gordon indicates he’s leaning away from, rather than towards the Bulls. If he changes his tune I’ll probably get back in his corner, but at this point I already see him as half-way out the door.

Dum spiro spero! (While there is life, there’s hope!)--Leon Trotsky

I understand

and I’m not really ripping him, and I guess I shouldn’t be digging at people but I have to admit that I’m still kind of mad at the franchise. They’ve made so many terrible decisions that I hated since MJ left and I’ve been against almost all of them and turned out right. I can’t help but think this is going to be another.

You’re right though Derrick is our guy and I do think he’ll be good and have been encouraged by some things in the summer league but it also seems clear that he’s pretty far away from being the star that some people claimed he’d be right away. That fact has spurned on my other controversial talk about letting Gordon and maybe even Deng go because we’re going to be bad next year I think, even with those two guys and we might as well start looking to the future and not signing guys who have not proven they can be stars to long deals.

by tyger1147 on Jul 9, 2008 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

not really

how hard was it to see that trading Brand for Chandler was stupid, trading for Jalen Rose was stupid, signing a declining Ben Wallace was stupid and trading Chandler for PJ Brown was stupid? These were all mind boggling to me. And there’s little moves here and there that were equally questionable. I don’t think it takes a genius to not have been happy with these moves

by JSlakov on Jul 9, 2008 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's five moves of... 40? 50?

What about Eddy Curry? A good move you were against? Hinrich? Nocioni? Bad moves you were for? I can’t wait to see your blog.

by tyger1147 on Jul 9, 2008 12:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well

I will go on record saying that I wanted us to resign Curry, definitely before the heart problem and that kind of muddled things but I still wanted to see how a team of Curry, Chandler, Deng, Gordon and Hinrich could have grown together. I think its hard to really hate on Curry when the Knicks are such a waste of a franchise and I am a firm believer that situation is a huge part of a player’s development.

However, I agreed wholeheartedly with the Crawford trade. Resigning Hinrich I was for and remain for, Nocioni’s deal is too long as I’ve said from the start but I think he gets too much hate. I also wanted the Bulls to draft Roy or Aldridge over Thomas and Ronnie Brewer over Sefolosha. I wanted Iguodala over Deng. I didnt want to trade JR Smith for nothing. But these aren’t huge deals compared to the ones I mentioned that are still hard to get over as a Bulls fan. And I fear greatly that passing on Beasley will be the same level of mistake.

by JSlakov on Jul 9, 2008 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So what's your point?

Every sane person knew Krause screwed up the team royally with those 2 trades. You’re not the first person to realize that, and no offense but you’re like 6 years late with your criticism.

Paxson messed up signing Ben Wallace, again something a ton of people realized. Paxson was aloof for not using PJ Brown’s expiring contract, but again something most people realized.

So, again, you’re unhappy with moves that have been dissected to the point of exhaustion. And, somehow, that implies Rose won’t be a superstar?

I think if the Bulls drafted Beasley we wouldn’t have heard a single word of criticism of you for the same exact roster.

by Ozzie Montana on Jul 9, 2008 12:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well

it wouldn’t be the exact same roster, they’d have Beasley instead of Rose who would have been a good fit with our current team and would not require a massive overhaul.

Obviously my complains about these moves aren’t new, my point is that as a fan these frustrations build up and I can’t help but feel like they just made another terrible move that could set the franchise back for another 5 years. If Rose becomes a superstar, and I’m not saying thats impossible by any stretch, then its all great but my fear has been that its a huge roll of the dice when Beasley would have been a sure thing.

by JSlakov on Jul 9, 2008 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it has a lot more to do with

you saying Rose over Beasley was a mistake since two months before the draft and continuing to say that in different forms over and over.

by CrashDavis on Jul 9, 2008 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So we let Deng and Gordon go

And have an 8 man roster for the season? Or do you think Demetrius Nichols and JamesOn Curry are acceptable replacements?

And please show me the comments where everyone was claiming Rose was going to be great from the get-go. Really, almost every person on this site with some common sense has acknowledged 1000 times that Beasley was the safe pick, and Rose was the long-term project. The point was the Bulls aren’t contending for a title now anyways, they were better of building a team for the future.

The whole Beasley/Rose debate hinged on “Beasley is great now, but Rose will be better in 5 years.”

by Ozzie Montana on Jul 9, 2008 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Its workable

All he’s run at the college level is isos. Maybe vdn could have installed ddm for the summer league just for shits and giggles. He’s a 19 yr old rookie. I expect him to pretty much suck this year and hope he’ll have the capacity to work his game into a great NBA pg’s game around year 3 or 4. That jumper looked really consistent. If he can add an up-and-under to that, he’ll be really hard to stop. But I still think he looked disinterested, too; wasn’t crashing the boards, wasn’t even really trying that hard in help defense (which he seems to enjoy).

Perhaps trying to avoid injury?

Just a guess, but when you are not fighting for a spot on the roster getting tangled under the rim with a bunch of scrubs and rolling an ankle probably doesn’t sound like a good move. I know what one of their players fell on Rose’s leg I held my breath a second. It would be nice if he got an opening to do something spectacular, but with the lanes all clogged I’d rather he not do anything stupid.

Rose needs to spend the rest of the summer working on that jumper

If he gets that, he could easily average 18 points a game. Tyrus was much better, was picking the right spots to shoot his midrange jumper. What he needs to work on is just harnessing his initial burst of speed.Too often he decides to charge into the lane without really reacting to the defense in front of him. If he’s more patient, he’s going to have less of those stupid mistakes.

by Ozzie Montana on Jul 8, 2008 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's a great point.

Watching Beasley and Tyrus yesterday really pinpointed that main issue with Tyrus’s face-up game. Beasley moves just fast enough to beat his defender while staying in control, while Tyrus always tries to sprint to the hoop. When it works it’s amazing, but it doesn’t really work that often.

(And I’m done complimenting Beasley for today.)

is not a true basketball fan because every top prospect PG that came into the league struggled for first couple years but then matured and got better, just look at the top 5 (cp3,nash,williams,ect) so dont give up on the young kid even his first two years hel struggle but onto my other thing i honestly thing Noah was the worst decision to be picked at number 7 (or was it 11?) not sure doesnt matter the boy has no offensive game what so ever, he cant shoot the ball… i mean he was an ok college player but i think he went that high cause the gators won the championship he dint deserve it.
